THE CORONATION OF OUR LADY
Introduction: The Bride of Christ
The idea of the “Coronation of the Virgin Mary” in Heaven after her “Assumption of the
Virgin Mary”, took its rise in an accommodation of the words in the (Old Testament)
Bible’s “Song of Songs” 4:8 that says: “Come! My bride, from Lebanon! Thou shalt be
crowned!”
The “Crowned Bride” vision was chiefly developed and popularized by Christian
iconography that flourished in Christian churches; while Revelation 12 prophesied of a
“Mother (Mary) & Child (Jesus) who’ll rule all nations”.
However, the “Bride of Christ” is believed to be the “Blessed Virgin Mary” (as the
“Crowned Bride”), either depicted with a world monarch’s crown (of gold & jewels), or
simply a “floral wreath”.
While Jesus Christ has entrusted his Mother Mary to Saint John the Apostle, before his
death on the Cross, thus, Saint John cared for Mother Mary, and believed that the new-
found “Mother & (adopted) Son” has inspired the saint to write the “Book of Revelation”:
The Bible’s Revelation refers to the “Virgin Mary” as that “Christ Bride”, in Revelation
19:7-9 – “Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honor to him (the Child Jesus): for the
marriage of the (true) Lamb is come, and his wife hath made herself ready”.
In Revelation 21:2, it says: “And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down
from God out of Heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband”; thus, a belief
also says that the “Virgin Mary” is the “New Israel” & the “New Jerusalem”, as a person.
In Revelation 21:9, it says: “And there came unto me one of the 7 angels which had the
7 vials full of the 7 last plagues, and talked with me, saying, ‘Come hither! I will show
thee the Bride, the Lamb's wife!” – believed to be “chosen mothers” for the Holy Family.
MARIAN CATHOLIC ICONOGRAPHY
According to Marian tradition, the earliest existing example of the “Coronation of the
Virgin Mary” is the artwork in the (Roman Catholic) “Basilica of Santa Maria” in
Trastevere, a district in the Imperial City of Rome.
As one of the oldest Roman church buildings, however, the first Marian shrine sanctuary
was built in 221 and 227 by (the “Early Christian Catholic” bishop of Rome) Pope
Callixtus I (reign: 218-223), during the persecutions of the “Roman Empire of Rome”.

2. But after the Roman Empire accepted Christianity as the state religion, in after 313AD,
the original Marian shrine was demolished, and later, a large-scale (Marian) Roman
Catholic church building was built by the (Roman Catholic) Pope Julius I (337-352).
Although the original “Coronation of the Virgin Mary” image is unknown for the first well-
known (Marian) “Early Christian Catholic” church built in Rome, but a 7th century
Byzantine (Eastern Roman) icon, titled as “Madonna della ClemenzaTrastevere”, exists
in the Roman clergy-built Roman church.
With the Marian title “Our Lady of Trastevere”, the (Marian) Roman Catholic church has
large areas of important mosaics from the late 13th century by the Italian artist Pietro
Cavallini (1259-1330).
The (Marian) Roman Catholic “Church of Santa Maria” in Trastevere (Rome), is where
the image of “Our Lady (The Queen Virgin Mary”, that dates at around 1140, is depicted
already crowned, sitting on a large throne resembling a Roman church building.
But then, above her, in Heaven, would be the head of her “Son Jesus” sending the Holy
Spirit (in the form of the white dove of peace); but a century later, there appeared what
became the usual design, “Christ” putting a “Queen’s Crown” upon his Mother’s head.
“Western Christian” icons of queens & kings came from the European cultures of
(feudal) world royal families & nobles for the (feudal) lords and landladies having own
castles, palaces & church buildings.
But the true “Lord” (Jesus) & “Our Lady” (The Virgin Mary) have always been known by
Christians as the poorer peasant common majority holy families; that, with the “Acts of
the Apostles” (in the Bible), have held any lands & properties in common benefit.
The theme of the “Coronation of Queen (Virgin) Mary”, in “Western (Christian) Tradition”
(among feudal lords & land ladies), became popular in medieval European art
decorating large-scale buildings to prove the world royals’ privileges over the majority
peasantry.
THE HOLY ROSARY OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY
Even if many Christian monks & nuns who were supposed to live in asceticism (in “vow
of poverty” as Lord Jesus Christ did on Earth), however, amidst living in large-scale
monasteries, convents & schools – but Marian Catholicism has developed within.
Recent religious writers and artists have been divided in the (pagan City of Rome’s)
“Roman tradition” of large-scale church buildings (owned by the Roman Popes &
clergymen), while the (Marian) Roman Catholic tradition focuses on the holy rosary.
According to Catholic tradition, the “Holy Rosary” was instituted by the Blessed Virgin
Mary herself; when, in the 13th century, she appeared to Saint Dominic (founder of the

3. Dominicans), and given him a rosary (string of beads), and asked that Christians to pray
the “Our Father”, “Hail Mary” (& “Hail Holy Queen”), and “Glory Be” prayers.
Since the “Holy Rosary” has 5 decades, each corresponds to 1 mystery, while there are
5 mysteries for each rosary that includes: 1) The Joyful Mysteries, 2) The Sorrowful
Mysteries, 3) The Glorious Mysteries, & 4) The Luminous Mysteries.
The “Coronation of the Virgin Mary” is prayed in the 5th mystery of the “Glorious
Mysteries”, and suggests the final moment of the “Assumption of the Virgin Mary to (the
true) Heaven”, as the Bible’s Apocalypse proclaims a “woman with a crown of 12 stars”.
In other traditions, the “Virgin Mary” has also been called “Saint Mary”, however, in the
“Litany of the Rosary”, the “Virgin Mary” is also titled as the “Queen of All Saints” (thus,
“Queen Virgin Mary” & the “Queen Virgin Mother Mary” have often been used).
In Western Christianity, the crowned Virgin Mary has been honored in a medieval
Marian carol:
“After to Heaven he took his flight, and there he sits with his Father of might, with him is
crowned that ‘Lady of Light’, ‘Redemptoris Mater’ (Mother of the Redeemer).
‘Filia Sion’ (Daughter of Zaion), thou art the Flower, full sweetly shalt thou sit by me, and
bear a crown with me in tower.
And all mine Saints to thine honor, shall honor thee, Mother, in my bliss, that blessed
body that bear me in bower – ‘Veni, coranaberis’ (Come you will be crowned).”
When “Christianity”, that began in the “Early Christian Catholic Church”, from the 1st to
early 4th century, has been fused in the pagan Roman religion of the “Roman (Catholic)
Church (Empire) of Rome” (since 313AD), the wealthy complained of Jesus’ morals.
In the 5th century, the (Roman Catholic bishop) Saint Augustine of Hippo (from
Northern Africa) wrote “On the city of God against the pagans” (Latin: De civitate Dei
contra paganos), often called “The City of God”- book of Christian philosophy.
THE CORONATION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY
Allegedly the Christian (Catholic) book, with the content about “The Coronation” (fulfilled
by the “Holy Trinity”), has the following contents:
“After placing the most Blessed Mary on this exalted and super-eminent throne, the
Lord declared to the courtiers of Heaven all the privileges she should enjoy in virtue of
this participation in his majesty.
The Person of the eternal Father, as the first principle of all things, speaking to the
angels and saints, said to them:

4. ‘Our Daughter Mary was chosen according to our pleasure from amongst all creatures,
the first one to delight us, and who never fell from the title and position of a true
Daughter, such as we had given Her in our divine mind!
She has a claim on our dominion! Which we shall recognize by crowning her as the
legitimate and peerless Lady and Sovereign!’
Then the ‘Incarnate Word’ said: ‘To my true and natural Mother belong all the creatures
which were created and redeemed by me; and of all things over which I am King! She
too shall be the legitimate and supreme Queen!’
Then ‘Holy Ghost’ then said: “Since she is called my beloved and chosen spouse, she
deserves to be crowned as Queen for all eternity!’
‘Having thus spoken the three ‘Divine Persons’ (of the ‘Holy Trinity’) placed upon the
head of the most Blessed Mary a crown of such splendor and value, that the like has
been seen neither before nor after by any mere creature. At one and the same time a
voice sounded from the throne saying:
‘My Beloved, chosen among the creatures, our kingdom is yours! You shall be the Lady
and the Sovereign of the seraphim, of all the ministering spirits, the angels and of the
entire universe of creatures!
Attend, proceed, and govern prosperously over them, for in our supreme consistory! We
give you power, majesty and sovereignty!
Being filled with grace beyond all the rest, you have humbled yourself in your own
perspective to the lowest place; receive now the supreme dignity deserved by you, and,
as a participation in our Divinity, the dominion over all the creatures of our
Omnipotence!...
From thy royal throne to the center of the earth you shall reign! And by the power we
now give you, you shall subject hell with all its demons and inhabitants!
Let all of them fear you as the supreme Empress and Mistress of those caverns and
dwelling-places of our enemies!
In thy hands and at thy pleasure we place the influences and forces of the Heavens, the
moisture of the clouds, the growths of the earth; and of all of them do distribute
according to your will, and our own will shall be at your disposal for the execution of
your wishes!...
You shall be the Empress and Mistress of the Church Militant! Its Protectress, its
Advocate, its Mother and Teacher!

5. You shalt be the special Patroness of the Catholic countries; and whenever they, or the
faithful, or any of the children of Adam call upon you from their heart, serve or oblige
you, you shall relieve and help them in their labors and necessities!
Thou shalt be the Friend, the Defender, and the Chieftainess of all the just and of our
friends; all of them you shall comfort, console and fill with blessings according to their
devotion to you!
In view of all this, we make you the Depositary of our riches, the Treasurer of our goods!
We place into your hands the helps and blessings of our grace for distribution!
Nothing do we wish to be given to the world which does not pass through thy hands;
and nothing do we deny, which you wish to concede to men!
Grace shall be diffused in your lips for obtaining all that you wish and ordain in Heaven
and on Earth, and everywhere shall angels and men obey you!
Because whatever is ours shall be yours! Just as you have always been ours; and you
shall reign with us forever!”
