1. In Study of Mariology & Roman Catholicism:
THE “BLESSED VIRGIN MARY” IS THE “QUEEN OF HEAVEN”
“Queen of Heaven” is a Marian title given to the Virgin Mary (mother of the Child Jesus
Christ), revered by Christians mainly in the (Roman) Catholic Church, Eastern
Orthodoxy, and, to a lesser extent, in Protestantism (i.e. Anglicanism, Lutheranism,
etc.); to search for Mary’s “(Marian) Mother Church” (or the “holy catholic church”).
Although it is alleged that the Marian title has been used to refer to the Virgin Mary
since the “Early Christian Catholic Church” era, from the 1st to the early 4th centuries,
but only in the 5th century, that the “First Council of Ephesus” (of Christian world
churches), that the Virgin Mary was proclaimed “(Queen) Mother of God”.
The first Mariological definition and basis for the title of “Mary, Queen of Heaven” has
developed at the “Council of Ephesus”, where Mary was defined to be the “Mother of
God”, while Jesus has been titled as the “Son of God”, thus, Catholic images portray the
belief through the “Sacred Heart of Jesus & the Immaculate Heart of Mary”.
The Council fathers specifically approved this version against the opinion, that Mary is
"only" the mother of Jesus. Nobody had participated in the life of her son more, than
Mary, who gave birth to the Son of God.
Then in the 4th century, St. Ephrem called the Virgin Mary as "Our Lady" and "Our
Queen"; and then “Church Fathers” and the “Doctors of the Church” have continued to
use the Marian title also used by Early Christian writers (i.e. St. Jerome, St. Peter
Chrysologus, etc.).
The title "Queen of Heaven" has long been a (Marian) Catholic tradition, included in
Marian prayers and devotional literature, and seen in Western art in the subject of the
“Coronation of the Virgin” from the 5th to the modern 15th centuries, long before it was
given a formal definition status by the Church (in the 20th century).
“Queen of Heaven”, in Latin: “Regina Caeli”, is one of many Queen titles used to honor
the Virgin Mary, the mother of Jesus; and the title was derived from the ancient Early
Christian Catholic teaching that Mary, at the end of her earthly life, was bodily and
spiritually assumed into heaven, and that she is there honored as “Queen”.
THE MARIAN POPE’S INSPIRATION FROM MARY
The title “Theotokos”, in Greek meaning “Mother of God”, and in Latin “Mater Dei” has
been a (Marian) Catholic teaching expressed in the papal encyclical “Ad Caeli Reginam”
(Queen of Heaven), issued by (the Roman Catholic) Pope Pius XII in 1954.
It states that the Virgin Mary is called “Queen of Heaven” because her son, Jesus
Christ, is the “King of Israel” and the “Heavenly King of the Universe”; and indeed, the
2. Davidic tradition of Israel recognized the “mother of the king” as the “Queen Mother of
Israel”.
The (Roman Catholic) Pius XII explained on the (“Marian) theological reasons for her
title of “Queen”, in a radio message to honor “Our Lady of Fatima” on May 13 (1946),
after World War II, known as “Bendito seja” (or “Blessed be”):
“He (Jesus Christ), the Son of God, reflects on His heavenly Mother the glory, the
majesty and the dominion of His kingship, for, having been associated to the King of
Martyrs in the... work of human Redemption as Mother and cooperator, she remains
forever associated to Him, with a practically unlimited power, in the distribution of the
graces which flow from the Redemption.
Jesus is King throughout all eternity by nature and by right of conquest: through Him,
with Him, and subordinate to Him, Mary is Queen by grace, by divine relationship, by
right of conquest, and by singular choice [of the Father God].”
In his 1954 encyclical “Ad caeli reginam” ("To the Queen of Heaven"), (the Roman
Catholic) Pius XII asserts that the Virgin Mary deserves the Marian title because she is
“Mother of God”, because she is closely associated as the “New Eve” with Jesus'
redemptive work (as the “New Adam”).
Because of the Virgin Mary’s preeminent perfection (such as the “Immaculate
Conception”, being “free from original sin”), and because of her intercessory power (to
her Son Jesus, & to Father God) – the pope’s “Ad caeli reginam” states that the main
principle on which the royal dignity of Virgin Mary rests is her “Divine Motherhood”.
So with complete justice, St. John of Damascus (675-749), a Christian monk and priest,
write about the Virgin Mary: "When she became the ‘Mother of the Creator’, she truly
became ‘Queen’ of every creature”.
THE BIBLICAL BASIS OF THE MARIAN DEVOTION
In the Old Testament Bible, that under some Davidic kings, the “gebirah”, or the "Great
Lady", usually the “Mother of the King”, held great power as the advocate with the king;
for example, in 1 Kings 2:20, King Solomon said to his Mother Bathsheba, seated on a
throne at his right: "Make your request, Mother, for I will not refuse you”.
(Western) Christian scholars then view the Old Testament passages to that of the New
Testament woman, whom is the Holy Mother “Virgin Mary” (the mother of the “Holy Son”
Jesus Christ, the “Messiah”).
In the New Testament Bible, the Marian title “Queen of Heaven” has several biblical
sources; for example, at the “Annunciation”, the Archangel Saint Gabriel announced
that the holy spirit will conceive “Jesus Christ” whom:
3. "…will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give
to him the throne of his father (King) David. He will rule over the (royal) house of Jacob
forever and his reign will be without end."(Luke 1:32)
The biblical precedent in ancient Israel is that the mother of the king becomes the
queen mother; thus, the Virgin Mary's queenship is a share in Jesus’ kingship.
The Catholic Church views the Virgin Mary as the awaited “woman clothed with the sun”
in the Book of Revelation 12, that states:
"A great and wondrous sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, with
the moon under her feet and a crown of 12 stars on her head. She was pregnant and
cried out in pain as she was about to give birth (to a “child who’d rule all nations”)…”
Then another sign appeared in heaven: an enormous red dragon with seven heads and
ten horns and seven crowns on his heads."
The (holy catholic) Church accepts Revelation 12 as a reference to the Virgin Mary,
allegedly also titled as “Israel” (originally meaning “victorious with God), and the (Marian
catholic) Church as a 3-fold symbolism through the “Book of Isaiah” and affirms the
Virgin Mary as the mother of Jesus.
The Virgin Mary, with her son Jesus Christ, is also believed as the prophetic fulfilment
described in the Old Testament Bible’s Isaiah, such as:
1) Isaiah 7:14 – “The Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will conceive and give
birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel”;
2) Isaiah 26:17 – “Like as a woman with child, that draweth near the time of her delivery,
is in pain, and crieth out in her pangs; so have we been in thy sight, O Lord.”;
3) Isaiah 54:1 (Blessings for Zion) – “Shout for joy, O barren woman, who bears no
children; break forth in song and cry aloud, you who have never travailed; because
more are the children of the desolate woman than of her who has a husband,” says the
LORD;
4) Isaiah 66:7 (Rejoice with Jerusalem) - “Before she was in labor, she gave birth;
before she was in pain, she delivered a boy”.
In the Old Testament Bible, in the “Book of Jeremiah” (chapters 7 & 44), the prophet
warned the peasant peoples for having "sinned against the Lord" due to their idolatrous
practices offered to a certain “Queen of Heaven” (probably a pagan idol or goddess,
and/or a world rank in a world kingdom or empire).
In the New Testament Bible, Saint John (whom Jesus has entrusted his Mother Mary),
wrote the “Book of Revelation”, and mentioned similar revered “Queen of Heaven” (in
4. the world), but in use of other terms (i.e. “Whore of the City”), who gained wealth and
political power through all the other world kingdoms & empires.
Thus, the New Testament Bible is said to substantiate the Marian title “Queen of
Heaven”, when the (Holy Mother) Virgin Mary was from a poor peasant common “Holy
Family” (betrothed to Father St. Joseph), and gave birth to the (Holy Son) Jesus Christ
who proclaimed that the meek poor (majority of Humanity), inherits “Heaven & Earth”.
VENERATION OF THE TRUE QUEEN OF HEAVEN
The word "Queen" is common during and after the 6th century; while Marian hymns of
the 11th to 13th centuries address the Virgin Mary as “Queen”, such as “Hail, Holy
Queen,” “Hail, Queen of Heaven,” “Queen of Heaven.”
The Dominican holy rosary and the Franciscan crown, as well as numerous invocations
in Mary’s litany (such as the “Litany of Loreto”), all celebrate Mary’s queenship; and for
centuries, she has been invoked as the “Queen of Heaven”.
The “Litany of Loreto” includes Mary’s titles: Queen of the Angels, Queen of Patriarchs,
Queen of Prophets, Queen of Apostles, Queen of Martyrs, Queen of Confessors,
Queen of Virgins, Queen of All Saints, Queen of Families, Queen conceived without
original sin, Queen assumed into Heaven, Queen of the Most Holy Rosary, Queen of
Peace, etc.
Although in the 1800s, the (Marian) Roman Catholic Pope Leo XIII has prescribed the
“Leonine Prayers” to be prayed (after) the Roman Rite masses, that includes the “Hail
Mary” & the “Hail Holy Queen” prayers; but the 2nd Vatican Council (in 1964) removed
those prayers, but the same clergy referred to “Mary” as the “Queen of the Universe”.
QUESTION: How can “Humanity” and the “World” know the true “Queen of Heaven”?
Via the Virgin Mary’s titled as “Queen of Heaven”, with her son the Child Jesus (the
“King of Heaven”)? For being part of the majority poor peasants of the “Holy Family”?
To answer, please pray the Virgin Mary’s Holy Rosary prayers, that includes the “Hail
Holy Queen” prayer, that states:
“Hail, holy Queen, mother of mercy, our life, our sweetness, and our hope. To you we
cry, poor banished children of Eve; to you we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping
in this valley of tears. Turn, then, most gracious advocate, your eyes of mercy toward
us; and after this, our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of your womb, Jesus. O
clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary. Pray for us, O holy Mother of God. That we
may be made worthy of the promises of Christ. Amen.”
