Midterm Activity 7
Group Process and Program Development
Relate the interplay of the following in your own group/ organization or group/organization you
have observed
A. Earned status and ascribed status
B. Position powers and personal powers.
Achieved status are one’s that are acquired by doing something while ascribed status are the
result of being born into a particular family or being male or female.
The situation that I observed that shows the interplay of achieved status and ascribed status is
like our school head which I guess came from a family background that practice being thrifty, that
is why when she became our school head because she was promoted all the school supplies that
came from the MOOE that supposed to be distributed to the teachers in need, but sadly, its not
the way it should be, because it is very hard for her to give us school supplies that's why we
concluded that may be that was the result of her being promoted, that when a person reach a
certain position his/her character may change as well.
Positional power is the authority you wield by virtue of your position in the organization’s
structure and hierarchy. Personal power is your own skill and ability to influence people and
events whether or not you have any formal authority.
Positional power and personal power combine to create influence and inspire others. For instance,
our SSG president already has influence over others because she is the SSG President, but she
also possesses personal power that enables her to inspire others even when she is not the SSG
President. This power comes from her amiable demeanor, intelligence, and beauty combined with
her good looks.
