2. A) TECHNICAL DRAWINGS
1. Sceintex Pulai
Scientex Pulai is a housing development in Pulai, Johor. Atria Architects is involved in design
and construction of approximately 300 double storey terrace houses and some shop-offices for
this development.
1.1 Road Name & House Number
I was tasked to assist the architect to arrange & apply for authority approval of road name and
house number for a particular section of residential and shop offices areas in Taman Scientex,
see site plan below. There is a certain rule in applying the house number for each house for
different local authorities (e.g. Kulai and Johor Bahru’s local authorities each have their own
way of arranging road name & house number). However, ther is a general rule to follow: The
main road that leads into the residential area should be the first road to be named. (E.g. Jalan
Bukit 1) And the house number assigned to the house should start from left hand side of the
entry of the road to right, and back to left again (Example shown as below Picture 1.1 to 1.2). If
the Left rows of houses are given odd number, then the right rows shall be given even number.

The finished drawing(s) will later be printed and handed over to the architects or senior
draftsman to pre-consult the local authorities before the actual submission.
4. 1.2 CONSTRUCTION DRAWINGS:
For another Scientex project, I was asked to prepare drawings for construction uses. It includes
the ceiling layout plan, master door & window drawings, door & window schedule, toilet detail,
staircase detail, level drop detail, gutter detail, roof trust drawings, façade detail drawings
(Picture 3 to 14) etc. Thanks to my fundamental knowledge from measured drawings and
building services which had help me to execute the work given smoothly alongside guidance
from the senior draftsman. Doing the construction drawing was a tough job as you need to
separate each specific elements from the main building plans and enlarge it to a larger scale for
detailing. You need to study a lot of precedence and old drawings to learn how to produce a
detail that is workable.

11. 1.3 S&P DRAWINGS:
I am also required to prepare S&P drawings, so called sale & purchase drawings for insertion
into the Sale & Purchase Agreement (Picture 15 to 16). I was given full sets of drawings
consisting of different types of shop lots & residential houses (end lot, corner lot, intermediate
lot, etc) within a specific region. I was assigned to convert those complicated tender drawings
into simple floor plans, elevations and sections for that purpose. I learned that not every detail
of the drawing shall need to be documented. Only the relevant and important items sufficient
to delineate the building are to be shown. This is to avoid dispute between the purchaser and
the developer/architect over what the drawing represent, as it is natural that everyone has
their own interpretation of what they see or read and may differ from one to another.

13. B) AUTHORITY INSPECTION, SITE VISIT & SITE MEETING

1. Bomba Inspection- Setia Sky88
Setia Sky 88 consist of 2 phases, with phase 1 consist of 2 tower blocks of 55 storeys sitting on a
10 storey podium. Bomba inspection was arranged with the attendance of the architect,
engineers, contractor and specialist sub-contractors after the completion of the phase 1
( Picture 17 to 20). The building is protect by active and passive fire-fighting system.
The purpose of this Bomba inspection is to let the local firefighting department to inspect and
ensure that the completed building did comply the fire protection system requirement as per
the approved plan. It involves the checking of both active and passive fire fighting system
installed, including checking of fire door installation, installation of Hosereel tank (for hose reel),
sufficiency of water pressure of hosereel/wet riser system, lift homing system, functioning of
alarm activated smoke ventilation system, etc.

16. 2. Site Meetings- Setia Sky88 & Eco Tropics
Site meeting is held regularly between architects, client, fellow consultants including engineers
and the contractors. The purpose of having site meeting is to ensure the progress of the
construction is on time and to resolve construction problems faced on site. I was assigned to
assist an architect to record and observe how the meeting was held & what the role of an
architect should be in the project.
I have attended the site meetings for Setia Sky 88 and Eco Tropics, projects of different scale
and building types. Setia Sky 88 consist of 3 blocks of 55-storey serviced apartments while Eco
Tropics is a 1000 acres landed housing development. From the site meeting I learned that
architects play the key role in coordinating the whole team of construction personnel including
interior designer, main and sub-contractors, engineers, supervisors etc. so that the construction
of the building/ phase would run smoothly without any delay and with reasonable quality.
Architects would monitor the works so that every construction progress is on time and
everyone in the team is doing their job. The architect will question and ask the project manager
from the contractor side for reasons and solution if their progress is falling behind schedule.
The architect would then give his advice and comments on their proposal if he deemed
necessary.
The proceeding of the meeting will be recorded in the form of site meeting minutes by the
architect.
17. C) RENDERING OF DRAWIGNS FOR PRESENTATION

I was assigned to assist one of the architects to produce 3-D model of the building and render
the images for proposal presentation to the client.

I was asked to render the floor plans for presentation to client. I had attended the presentation at the
cleint’s office.

22. D) ATTEND ARCHITECTURAL SEMINAR IN SINGAPORE
- Construe and Construct (picture 30 to 34)
Location: School of Architecture, National University of Singapore
Our supervisor Ar. Chok actually has a practicing license in Singapore before he starts working
in Malaysia. In order to maintain his validity & status of his license in Singapore, he needs to
collect minimum CPD points by attending seminars, events, dialogues, meetings or workshops.
From there I learned that if the architects secured their practicing license after passing the
professional examination, they need to renew their license annually in order to continue their
practice. For that they have to make sure they are still in keeping with the current trend &
regulation by law of the architecture industry. I understood that this applies to all architects
and other professionals worldwide.
We are fortunate to be able to follow Ar. Chok to attend one of the seminars held in Singapore.
The theme of the seminar was “Construe & Construct” featuring lectures from 4 practicing
young architects in Southeast Asia talking about the process of the inception and construction
of their buildings. We were fortunate to meet some of the few well known architects from
locals and overseas, including: the Chia brother (Chia Shi Chee, Chia Shi Chen) from Basic Design
Workshop who based in Malaysia; Shunri Nishizawa (Nishizawa Architect) from Vietnam;
Herman Dasmanto from ARA Studio, Indonesia and Hoang Thuc Hao from 1+1>2 International
Architecture, Vietnam.
The seminar starts with the talk from a Japanese Architect Shunri Nishizawa, who is now based
in Vietnam. His philosophy & design tends to connects & blur the boundaries of the inside and
out, where the definition of outdoor & indoor space does not exist anymore. He believes that
why human likes open space more is because their natural desire to be free but not bounded
by four walls.
The seminar was truly inspiring and we get to know the process from the building design stage
to realization. The nature of works of each architect differs from serving the community to pure
self-experimentation of new architecture language and expression.
The seminar ended with an exciting 40 minutes Q&A sessions when presenters and the
audience exchange view and experiences.

26. E) CONCLUSION
During the 10 weeks of my internship here, Atria Architects has offered me a lot of opportunity
for me to participate & gain hands on experience in multiple projects at their various stages
including rendering, concept development, tender & construction drawing, preparation of S&P
graphics, attend site-visit & site meeting, submit plans to the local authorities, etc. I am very
grateful that Atria has opened my eyes to how an architectural consultancy office works and to
the reality of the current architectural and construction industry. It also showed me how the
teams consultants and contractors works together to ensure the progress of work run smoothly
and on time.
I am very grateful that Atria Architects has given me a chance to carry out my internship in the
best possible condition. I am given the chance to observe the various stages of architect’s life
and get involved in almost every aspect of their works within the office and on site. I also get to
practice my rendering skills & sharpen my technical skills for CADing details for different
building components.
I am also grateful that Ar. Chok brought me to attend an international architectural seminar at
School of Architecture, National University of Singapore that engage me in the discourse
whereby 4 young architects of the region generously share with us their joy and pain in
pursuing their architectural dream from conceptualizing to realization.
Also thanks to Mr. Angus Lee who came to Atria Architects to pay me visit. As my tutor for this
subject, he guided us how to write and compose this report to document the 10 weeks journey
we have gone through.
