The ROLE of an Architect
An architect is a licensed
professional who organizes
space. They plan, design,
and oversee the constru-
ction of buildings.

involved early in the
c o n s t r u c t i o n o f a
building, they have to
supply architectural
drawings, the design
o r p l a n s , s o t h e
b u i l d i n g c a n b e
accurately ‘costed’ by
a builder. Once the
developer or new home
builder’s client is
happy to proceed, the
architect may submit
the final plans to
council for building
a p p r o v a l s o
construction of the
new home or commercial
building can commence.
Inspection of
t h e n e w h o m e ’ s
construction is then
handled by a licensed
building supervisor.
However in
the construction of a
commercial building,
architects role is
more comprehensive,
often contracted to
o v e r s e e t h e
construction process,
to ensure the building
works are completed in
accordance with the
a r c h i t e c t u r a l l y
d e s i g n e d p l a n s .

modifications to the

construction, the role
of the architect will
often be to supply

making them aware of
how construction is
proceeding, which is

on large scale. An

  What is the work process of an
architect in the construction industry?

“We will meet the client first, and get the design brief. After that,
we need to go through a design process then only can proceed
the construction and plans. From construction, we must minister
the contract until the completion of the project.”!
Authority submission – “Design must get the approval of
relevant authorities, can be from local authorities such as
DBKL in Kuaila Lumpur. ”!
Drawing or design process – “We need to study the
capacity of the site, then start some freehand sketches. We
must always ensure that the criteria meet to achieve the
clients needs before we proceed the detail drawings.”!

  What are the problems that would be faced
by the architects in the process of construction?

  What is your emphasis on designing a
building or space?

  What are the things to be done after
completion?
“ When you build some buildings, there will have some effects on
it and perhaps will receive complainment. So, architect have to
monitor the effects and mistakes to ensure that all of the effects
will be rectified by the contractors.” !
“Most of the time is monitoring issues with the contractor because
contractor mostly will delay their job because of many reasons. Therefore,
architect must make sure the contractor can finish their jobs on time. The
other problems such as miscommunication and lack of information from the
clients and consultants also happen. Architect must gather the right
information according to the client needs and give to the contractor on the
right time.”!
“ It depends on our clients needs.
There can be any buildings you will
design like social buildings. From
my view, I will consider the grid, the
uses of space and the criteria of
space.”!
“A successful architect is
the one who can play around
his time between his work
and family.” !
