THE NEW STANDARDS
LCTCS 2015 ANNUAL CONFERENCE 11
College and Career Readiness:
The New Standards
Conversations about Standards have sent shockwaves through the K-12
environment, and are also having an impact on Adult Education outcomes and
targets.
The central catalyst is well known- The Common Core.
As a response to the Common Core, the College and Career Readiness
Standards were developed and applied in the context of Adult Education.
LCTCS 2015 ANNUAL CONFERENCE 12
College and Career Readiness:
The New Standards
College and Career Readiness (or CCR) Standards cover the core areas of
Reading
Ten Anchor Standards
Math
 Eight Standards for Mathematical Practice
Implemented Across Levels of Increasing Difficult (K-1 Through High School)
Writing
Nine Anchor Standards
Language
Six Anchor Standards
Speaking and Listening

Can you make connections with how this standard might apply to career preparation?
Does this standard seem applicable to Career Readiness?

THE EVOLVING ADULT EDUCATOR
LCTCS 2015 ANNUAL CONFERENCE 16
Philosophy, Practice and Praxis:
The Evolving Adult Educator
It is clear that the educational landscape is changing across the nation and
across the world.
As adult educators, we should work toward remaining open and flexible to
opportunities for our own growth and development to better equip adult
learners and nurture positive student outcomes.
Our best option………..
professional development as a pathway toward personal evolution

The Three Major Learning
Approaches in Adult Education.
Philosophy:
The Evolving Adult Educator
What is your approach to learning and teaching?
Where do you see yourself represented in your interactions with students/
learners ?
How would your students/ learners describe your approach?
LCTCS 2015 ANNUAL CONFERENCE 19
Practice:
The Evolving Adult Educator
The work of an Adult Educator is described under the titles of
 Teacher
 Instructor
 (How do your students/ learners refer to you?)
Our work is a Practice Based Discipline. It is worthwhile to consider why we do
what we do in our adult education settings.
LCTCS 2015 ANNUAL CONFERENCE 20
Practice:
The Evolving Adult Educator
What are the Intended Practices which are in your tool kit as an Adult
Educator?
What are the Actual Practices you frequently use in the classroom setting or
otherwise?
Is there a difference between the Intended and Actual Practices, if so why?
LCTCS 2015 ANNUAL CONFERENCE 21
Practice:
The Evolving Adult Educator
Adult Education Program and Instructional Models:
Individualized Group Instruction
Managed Enrollment
Drop-In
Hybrid models
What model does your program use?
How effective is your model in preparing adult learners for college and career
readiness?
LCTCS 2015 ANNUAL CONFERENCE 22
Praxis:
The Evolving Adult Educator
LCTCS 2015 ANNUAL CONFERENCE 23
Are we flexible enough to
employ all three approaches?
Which situations fit a tiered
approach to adult learning?
How would the tiered
approach aid in developing
career readiness?

Integrating CCR Content
Now, that we’ve explored our approaches, let’s get really practical and discuss
possibilities for
Implementing College and Career Readiness Materials into your class room/
program.
Remember, developing a Career Preparation program is about generating
ideas rather than shutting down ideas.
LCTCS 2015 ANNUAL CONFERENCE 26
Integrating CCR Content
Idea 1:
Connect your own professional experiences with your students’ career goals.
Idea 2:
Focus on a CCR Standard, and make instructional connections with College Preparation as
extended exercises.
Idea 3:
Provide opportunities for collaborative learning for students with similar interests & career
goals
LCTCS 2015 ANNUAL CONFERENCE 27
Integrating CCR Content
Idea 4*
Supplement existing materials with low to no cost web materials to be used in a classroom setting.
Idea 5
Connect with your program graduates and completers, faculty and industry partners to interface
with your class.
Idea 6:
Have students study economic concepts, labor markets, and then use the newspaper or the
Internet to explore overall job trends, and outlook of his/her career pathway.

Practicums:
CONTEXTUALIZED CONSIDERATIONS
LCTCS 2015 ANNUAL CONFERENCE 31
Practicums:
Contextualized Considerations
The purpose of the practicum is to provide an opportunity for attendees to
actively synthesize the information presented today with previous teaching
experiences and the knowledge of their own educational setting to design,
strategize and/or organize a standards-based approach with the goal of career
preparation.
LCTCS 2015 ANNUAL CONFERENCE 32
Practicums:
Contextualized Considerations
Directions:
Participants will work with persons who currently use the same Adult Educational models.
In groups of no more than four people, choose one CCR standard, and two web based
resources to create a lesson plan, scope and sequence or a student resource developing
Career based skills. See the standards at
http://lincs.ed.gov/publications/pdf/CCRStandardsAdultEd.pdf
When creating the student resource, keep in mind the local context in which you teach.
