3. The Film Title
• The film title for this poster is in the conventional place,
which is at the bottom just above the billing block.
• Looking at the film title we try to come up with
meanings, what does the word ‘Divergent’ mean?
• It makes us think of the word ‘different’
immediately, maybe going in a different direction.
• It also makes us think of the word ‘diversity’ which
means several different forms
• Due to the different meanings we pull from the word
‘Divergent’ it can have both connotations, it could either
mean good or bad.
• There is a cut through the centre of the title, this could
suggest to the audience that one of the characters is
maybe split between two world almost, they have to
choose a side.
4. The Main Image
• For the main image we have two presumably lead
characters stood on a ledge looking over a derelict city.
• We presume this city to be New York. Because of the
complexity of the image, the city being derelict and the
sky looking almost disturbed, we assume the image is
multi-layered due to its complexity.
• Going back to the sky, as it looks quite disturbed in this
image it may suggest that a ‘storm’ is coming and it is in
a sense going to effect everyone.
• As the sun in the image is facing the female and
‘shining’ on her, it could suggest that maybe she is the
light in this storm, she can solve it.
• The derelict city is simply a dull grey, this suggests that
there is no life left there, everything is gone. Again the
sun on the main female could suggest she can bring life
back to the city
• After looking at the image it leaves us questioning;
What has happened to New York? Why are the
characters up high? Why is the one character protecting
himself with a gun?
5. Representation of audience
• We can immediately see what audience the film is targeting
through the actors which ae used.
• The female character;
• The female character looks to be around the age of
between 17-23.
• Although she seems a strong female, she does look a
feminine character, she is wearing a vest top with her
hair own, so she hasn’t been made to look masculine.
• She has been made to look like a strong female
character and a good role model for teens.
• The females strong character is reiterated through her
stance, which is strong and upright showing the ability
she has in this situation.
• Again due to the sun almost ‘shining’ on the female
character we may predict that she is almost going to be
the ‘saviour’ in this situation
6. Representation of audience
• We also get a sense of what type of audience the film is
trying to target through the male character.
• The male character seems to represent a slightly
older age group of between 19-25 .
• The male character seems to take the stereotypical
masculine role. He is positioned in the foreground
and looks to be protecting the female, as he is the
one with the weapon.
• The male is a strong masculine character, his
position can suggest this.
• The fact both characters are in grey may suggest that the
are trying to blend in with their surroundings.
• It seems to be a protective relationship between these
two characters, they seem to be synchronised, and the
fact they have their backs to one another my suggest
they literally have each others backs
7. The Intertitles
• “What makes you different makes you dangerous”
• This intertitle creates connotations of the idea of being
different. This links back to the film title ‘Divergent’, who
should we trust? Why are they different?
• “Based on the Worldwide bestseller”
• This is for people who are fans of the book, they will
want to go watch the film if they have already watched
the book.
• The fact that they have used actors who are almost
unknown, or have played ‘background’ characters in other
films, this may again appeal to some audiences as the actors
are new talent and haven’t been seen in any big films before.
8. Other information provided
• From the poster we are given the date of which
the film is released, which is the 21st February
2014. This is around school half term, and also in
between two seasons, again creating
connotations of different.
•We are also given social media to follow so we
can interact with the film, e.g. Twitter and
Facebook. They also created their own hash tag,
say “are you #Divergent?”
•We are also given the billing block, which is
located in the conventional place under the film
title.
9. Unique Selling Point
• The film offers its teenage audience danger,
adventure and the possibility of a romance.
• It leaves the audience questioning whether or no
the characters in the poster will survive.
• The film has a unique selling point as we have a
strong female lead for a change who has been
paired with a male character.
• We also see a derelict New York city in the
background, suggesting a post apocalyptic theme.
