2. SYNOPSIS
Based in 2030, Blythe is on the quest to seek love online. In his London flat in Woolwich, the lonely 23-year-old student before
going to bed, replays his day on the 20th of February. As this is based in the future, the technology used is a lot more advanced
than before and hyper reality plays a significant role in this. The second scene shows Blythe planning and preparing for his blind
date; Brushing teeth, showering, putting on his clothes not forgetting to show up to the date empty handed, whilst staying in
contact with her on hid path to his destination. Blythe takes it upon himself to buy a rose for his potential girlfriend before
starting his journey. Using public transport (DLR) He then to meet his blind date for 7:00pm sharp. The date seems to go well as
Blythe and Hanna look into each eye’s and with the help of virtual reality are able to see each other’s life profiles. As the night
draws to an end the couple look at each other wondering where they should from here.
4. PRE- PRODUCTION (PLANNING)
• For this project brief , we was asked to either produce a 5-8 minute video piece or create and
select between 18- 25 photographs with accompanied text both drawing on the key aspects of
this module ;Nature, technology, poetry. To start off the project, building ideas is essential in
creating a well-researched project. Researching each elements of each of the brainstorm (nature,
technology and poetry) allowed us to further the development of the project as whole.
• After brainstorming, we decided as a group to focus on technology as our main topic. Technology
is everywhere and is supposedly essential in daily lives in the 21st century. London is the capital of
new technology and infrastructure possibilities. With new adaptations and technologies
developing even better every year. The capabilities of London as a super city is unpredictable
.Throughout the media there is plenty predictions of what the world looks like in the future. .To
help us decide where we should go with the project. We decided to narrow the ideas again by
creating another mind map based on our main concept of technology in the future.
Mindmap
5. SCHEDULE
• A vital step in our project was to plan a schedule for the
whole project .
Benefits:
• We will be able to account for every important step needed
to complete the project and allow enough time to finish the
project comfortably before the deadline.
• Enables our group to keep referencing back to our schedule
to monitor our progress of our work.
Schedule:
February 6th – March 12th: Planning Research
March 14, 15,20th: Going out to shoot
March 27th – April 16th: Video Editing
April 17-23rd: Any developments needed to amend and re-
shoot.
6. STORYBOARD
After building our concepts of idea and creating
our proposal, we decided to put all of our ideas
into a notepad and plan each scene into a step by
step structure shown below. By planning each
scene, allows us to carefully plan out details of
each scene (including types of shots) etc. and
makes us more equipped and organized when
we’re ready to take the next step in our project
(production).Following that, we created another
storyboard but a visual sketch of the storyboard in
conjunction with our written notes.
8. FILM/ TV SERIES
We used Black Mirror’ and Lucy as one our main videos to
gather thoughts and ideas formed in our video. The two
videos showed great ideas that were futuristic, the screenshot
below of the man, showed a touch screen mirror, as if it was a
TV, there are news scrolling on top of the screen which we
also, copied the idea. As well as the time popping up in the
corner of the screen.
In the screenshot of the film Lucy, we used similar idea in our
film to set the film of our documentary. We wanted to
changed the equilibrium of the film by starting the clip back to
end, which Blythe recaps his day and then scrolls through all
the video on the screen.
These two films, were great inspirations as it allowed us to
play with our imaginations and be creative when it came to
adding futuristic editing on to our video.
9. BOOKS
We also used books, to get visual ideas. The image
beside shows an image of profile picture of an
identification of a person shown on the image.
This related well with our video and was used to
give a description of the two characters
through the eyes of each other. The other
image from the book of the globe, were
also incorporated into our film, we
developed the idea by showing facts and
figures of predictions in the future, to
give to make set the scene of it being
more of a documentary rather than a
short film.
10. EXHIBITION
We as a group have also decided to visit a museum,
that will be beneficial to our group project. So we
researched futuristic exhibitions online and found out
that there was one showing in Tate Britain Museum
called ‘Wot U About?’ by Rachel Maclean and We
also had the time to visit another exhibition by The
Crystal, the exhibition was about the predictions of
what the world would be like in the future. This
exhibition was more beneficial to us, as it showed as
different facts about the future such as, the population
of the world in 2050 etc.
11. YOUTUBE CLIPS – POV VIDEOS
Researching POV video’s were also one of the important researching when it comes to planning our production. As
our video will be using a lot of this throughout the film, it would be good to see the different ways and forms of
techniques people used when it comes to using this. Here are some of the video’s that I have looked at:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ACfhcMz-pAA
12. SOCIAL MEDIA (DATING WEBSITES)
As the storyline of our film is based on a guy looking for a relationship
online, we have decided to research into the advantages and disadvantage
of this. Internet has become such a big asset into our daily lives, we are
able to connect and communicate to others from the use of Facebook,
Twitter, Skype etc. These sites enable us to also meet new people from
different parts of world. There are also dating websites that allows you to
search people of your specific type.
Being victimised by internet users, has increased over the period years as
internet growth have become popularised in the new generation. As more
users that uses dating websites have rapidly increased by 36% over the
two years (2013-2015) due to the success of meeting ‘the love of their
life’. With that being in mind, this has been used by all age groups which
could lead to pros and cons. Therefore Reality TV shows such as; Catfish,
establish us that not everyone seems to be who they say they are and it
reminds audience to be careful when speaking to strangers.
14. PRODUCTION
Camera
• Fujifilm X100S Digital Camera
Lighting
• Natural raw light
Techniques
• Long shot
• Close up
• Crab shot (Low level)
• Eye level
Locations
• Royal Victoria
• Woolwich arsenal
• We have planned to base are locations in two different
areas these being East London campus, where we used
Mary-Grace’s accommodation as Hanna’s home and then
we used Leah’s house in Woolwich as Blythe’s (Kelly’s)
home. The final destination where Blythe and Hanna meet
is in Woolwich at a desert restaurant called Urban-Ice.
Development :
• Change of cast
• Locations
• Central to Woolwich
16. FINAL CUT PRO
Final Cut Pro x was the base of our editing. This is where all
our video clips were exported after editing specific parts of
the video on After Effects. We were all very much familiar of
how to use this software, therefore there was no problems
when it came to editing, cropping adding transitions etc. on
the final project.
17. AFTER EFFECTS
We used after effects mainly for the 3D effects. Using this
was very difficult to get the grips off it in the beginning.
However, because our video were not virtual reality all the
way through the video, we only needed specific parts of the
clip and there were many tutorials on YouTube that were
already done to guide us through step by step. Once we got
the hang of using ‘3D Tracker’ it was easy for us to do other
effects such as layering etc.
This was very time consuming as we had to learn the basic
edits on After effects and the clips we used were sometime
shaky as it was camera held, therefore when it came to
editing on After effects it would fail due to it. We had to edit
the shakiness of the videos onto Final cut pro by using the
‘stabilization tool’.
18. ADOBE AUDITIONS/ GARAGE BAND
We used Auditions and Garage band to record voice
overs of the two characters in our film, saying their
thoughts whilst on the journey of the process of them
getting ready up to where they meet. When it came to
recording on Garage band, it allowed us to add effects on
the audio clips giving that ‘echo’ effect to sound as if this
was being said in their mind.
Auditions were not much used, but it was a tool for our
clips on Garage band to export into Mp3 from Auditions,
and then from then exported it to Final Cut Pro.
19. EVALUATION
What went well ?
• Final project – effects
• Cutting and arranging clips
• Learning to use Adobe After effects.
Even better if ?
• Time management –refer back to schedule we
made in planning.
• More practice with using the After Effects
software.
Problems?
• Exporting clips
• Using after effects with small amount of
practice.
