Editor's Notes
A young mixed-race Alaska Native girl who grows up in a suburb struggles making sense of her identity.
Not having a connection to her culture and heritage negatively impacts her confidence.
When her parents recognize this, they have her spend time with her grandfather. From there she embarks on an adventure of self-discovery.
Through the episodes of ‘Journey of the Freckled Indian,’ Freckles not only learns about her own culture first hand, but also has self-discovery as she inspires her friends and classmates to learn about and share their culture and heritage as well.
Freckles discovers the indigenous heritages and the other cultures of her similarly mixed-race friends, and grows to feel even more connected to them. This connectedness inspires us a society to be more open to learning about others cultures and heritages as well.
Families that want to instill a ‘sense of belonging’ to their community and culture or ‘something larger than themselves’
