When creating a music video, magazine advertisement, and digipack for a band, the document discusses how the creators linked the three media. They used consistent elements like props, costumes, colors, fonts, and characters to create a subtle ongoing theme. Color in particular played a major role, with black, white, and yellow used throughout to easily associate the media with the band. The two main characters from the music video also appeared in the digipack and magazine advertisement to further visually connect the three pieces of media.
1. How effective is the
combination of your main
product and ancillary texts?
2. How did we link them?
When we were making our music video, Magazine
advert, and Digipack we would try to make the three
link together as much as possible through the use of
different elements. This was done through the use of
props costume, hair, colours, fonts and the main
characters themselves. These different elements
would be shown throughout the three different
ancillary text to help create a subtile ongoing theme
throughout the whole promotion. Linking the
conventions of the music genre this was how we
mainly decided on how and what would be
presented to the audience.
3. What was most important?
When starting out out pre production we were aware of the challenges of
taking on queen, as it is the most popular and out going band known.
However we decided that the use of props and camera work would be our
main way to present our work and make a clear link between all the different
forms of media we were going to create. When making the music video we
would include the use of the main prop which was a banana representing a
gun. This was done to create a comedic sense of representations of
gangsters. Queen was know for making fun of society and creating a new
‘look’. We wanted to show this through the use of different and ‘weird’ props,
the use of the banana also creates a connection with Andrew good wins
theory of relationship between lyrics and visuals but instead of using a real
gun using banana. We continued this to the digipack with the use of yellow
lighting to help continue the theme. However with the magazine advert we
wanted to follow the conventions so therefore left out the use of the prop in
hope to attract to the audience appeal.
4. What was the effective part?
Colour. From our pre production interviews and survey
analysis we found that colour would play a massive role in
influencing the audience and linking the three different
medias together. Following the conventions of rock we
chose the colour black, white and yellow to be the on going
connection throughout the three different medias as well
as making an iconic look. This then making it easy for the
audience to look at these colours and associate them with
our characters/band/ and or music video. This is show
effective for example in superhero videos with the iconic
red white and blue connection to either superman or
captain America, there is also more evidence with notions
of looking from Andrew Goodwins theory. This working in
our favour as it could give our products more appeal.
5. Characters
Lastly, the main characters themselves were a massive
element that we included in the poster, magazine and digipack.
These two characters give the ancillary texts and the Music
video life and make them what we wanted as a group to show.
The characters help link these three together as they are
portrayed in each, however in the magazine we decided to
portray the band instead of the actual characters, however it
still links with the music video and digipack due to the fact that
the actual people that are being shown are still the same as
the characters, so this will still give the ancillary texts and the
music video a visual link because the people still look the
same, with the exception of different clothing and body
language.
