I make this ppt for engineering students to help us the measuring tool understand about the measuring tool.
For better understanding we made about measuring tools for engineering and fitter trainees.

1.
2. Accurate measurement of dimensions like
widths, thickness, diameter, heights etc. are
of the great importance in production of
components.
the measuring tools is depend upon the size
of the shape of the component and required
accuracy.
Tools gauges and instrument are available.
3. A measuring instrument is a device
to measure a physical quantity. In the physical
sciences, quality assurance,
and engineering, measurement is the activity of
obtaining and comparing physical quantities of
real-world objects and events.
Determine the size of a component in terms
of standard units is called measurement.
•Is Safety Important? Not always
4. There are seven SI base units.
From these base units, all other
SI units of measurement can be
derived.
◦ Derived units are used for
measurements such as volume,
density, and pressure.

5. Fixed Type: steel rule, plug gauge, feeler
gauge etc.
Adjustable : caliper, surface gauge,
micrometer etc.
Direct Reading: Steel rule, Vernier caliper,
micrometer
Indirect reading: Divider, Calipers, surface
gauge
Non reading: Snap gauge, plug gauge, Ring
gauge etc.
6. The number of subdivision of unit of length on a rule is called
discrimination.
Steel scale is single piece linear
measuring instrument.
it indicates two units
that are cm and inches,
cm division on one side and inches,
on another side.
7. Engineer’s Rule:
It is normally 150mm or 300mm long.
It is used for taking direct measurements, layout
work and for testing flatness.
folding Rule :
It is normally 300mm long with 2 folds.
They can be extended out or retracted
into a coil inside the case.
8. A measuring tape is a flexible tool used for measuring length. It is
made up of materials like fiberglass, cloth, plastic, metal ribbon or
strip. So, it is a kind of flexible ruler also known as a tape measure.
It is marked in centimeters and inches.
Divide the number of centimeters by 100 to find out the number of
meters.
Class I: accurate to ±1.10mm over 10m length.
Class II: accurate to ±2.30mm over 10m length.
Class III: accurate to ±4.60mm over 10m length.

9. Calipers are simple measuring instruments used to
transfer measurements from a steel rule to objects
and vice versa.
Calipers are classified according to their joints and
their legs. Joint.
Made of high quality stainless steel, solid ,anti-rust
and durable.
Outside calipers. With flat shanks and hardened
points. Fitted with adjusting nut.
Outside calipers measure thicknesses and outside
diameters of objects; inside calipers measure hole
diameters and distances between surfaces.
Inside calipers are classified by the maximum length
of opening jaws.
11. Firm joint calipers:
It has both legs pivoted at one end.
The caliper is opened roughly to the required
size.
Spring joint calipers:
It is a measuring instrument consisting of two legs, a spring,
and an adjusting nut. The friction of the screw and adjusting
nut counteracts the tension of the spring which determines
the position of the legs.
The capacity of a spring joint caliper is directly related to its
size. Larger calipers can measure longer dimensions.
Spring joint calipers range in capacity from 75mm
(3 inches) to 300mm (12 inches).
12. Transfer caliper:
This type is available both as outside and inside calipers.
The transfer caliper is provided with a false
leg which is set so that the caliper may be
opened and then brought back to the same
position after removing from the casting.
Odd leg:
Fixed point 'Jenny' or 'Hermaphrodite' calipers are specifically
designed to locate the center of a round or square section of
steel, and are also used for marking off a constant distance
from an edge. One leg holds an adjustable point and the
other leg features a locating lug.
13. We can benefit from measurement instruments in a
variety of ways. Measurement of length, diameter,
width, and other dimensions would be difficult
without them. It’s critical to use the correct tool and
measure with the most precise units for each thing
measured if you want to measure accurately and
quickly.
