Select Measuring Tools and
Perform Measurement and
Calculation
Objectives:
1. select measuring tools needed for a specific job;
2. manipulate measuring tools correctly;
3. measure and calculate dimensions of a metal
object; and
4. realize the value of accuracy in measuring and
calculating dimensions based on specifications.
Lesson:
Select Measuring Tools
1. L- square
This is usually used to measure
the corner of a rectangular
object like a frame or door.
The corner measurement
should be 90 degrees.
Here are some measuring tools and
how they are being used.
2. Pull-push rule
This is made of a thin metal sheet
with measurement in it. It is very
flexible since you can easily adjust
and roll it. To use it just simply
pull the metal sheet to the desired
length or width and hook the end
part of the metal to get the
measurement.
3. Level ruler
This is used to check whether
the metal or wood surface is
level. It is just laid flat either
horizontally or vertically on
the surface of the object. The
surface is level if the bubble in
the glass tube is located at the
center of both side markings.
4. Divider
This is made of metal which
is used to measure arcs and
circles. If you want to use
circle design in your metal,
just use the divider to draw
a circle with the desired
diameter.
5. Vernier caliper
This tool can be used to
measure the outside and
inside circumference of a
steel pipe. It can also
measure the thickness of the
metal bar or the thickness of
the flat metal sheet.
Lesson 2:
Perform Measurement and
Calculation
1. Metric System is a measuring system that uses
units of 10. It is based on the metric with the
meter, liter, and kilogram as the units of length,
capacity, and mass.
2. English system on the other hand uses inch,
foot, and pounds as the basic units of
measurement. It is also commonly used around
the world.
2 Systems of Measurement:
Measuring tools used in the laboratory shops
usually have a Metric system on one side and
the English system on the other side. Let’s
take a look at this measuring tool.
Try these exercises of converting the
Metric System to the English System and
vice versa.
1. 2 meters = _________ ft
2. 3 yards = _________ cm
3. 12 inches = _________ cm
4. 3 meters = _________ inches
5. 5 feet = _________ m

See you next
meeting! :)
