4. Introduction
• The Digital Health Technology Catalyst (DHTC) is a new £35 million
funding programme being funded through the Industrial Strategy
Challenge Fund over the next 4 years.
• This new Catalyst, created to provide a sustainable pipeline of digital
health products designed to meet NHS needs and support the growth
of UK companies, was one of the recommendations in the
Accelerated Access Review. It aligns with the National Information
Board’s aims to:
• address specific market failures so that the digital health sector can grow
• deliver transformative, cost-effective technologies to patients more quickly
5. Digital Health Technology Catalyst, round 1, 2017
The aim of this competition is to speed up the development of new digital
solutions to healthcare challenges and grow the industry.
Projects must focus on the feasibility or development of digital health or
digitally-enabled medical technologies. These must have the potential to
achieve one or more of the following:
• improve patient outcomes
• transform healthcare delivery
• enable more efficient delivery of healthcare
• These technologies may be designed to be used in both clinical or non-
clinical everyday settings.
• Projects must be innovative and clearly demonstrate how they will
address needs of the healthcare system.

following:
• offer new, novel and breakthrough approaches to healthcare delivery
• improve patient outcomes by, for example, supporting self-care
management
• reduce demand on the health system and deliver efficiency and financial
savings
• provide healthcare benefits in either primary or secondary healthcare
• improve clinical decision-making
9. DHTC Industrial Research and Experimental
Development - Scope
The grant enables the development of new and innovative digital
health solutions, through (but not limited to):
• technology development
• design and prototyping
• demonstration of effectiveness
• market testing
• evaluation
10. Industrial Research and Experimental
Development continued
Proposals must offer innovative digital approaches to healthcare
delivery and demonstrate:
• the value proposition
• a clear understanding of the market potential, routes to market and
commercialisation strategies
• alignment with the Catalyst’s core aims to grow the digital health
industry and help get transformative, cost-effective technologies to
patients more quickly

innovation to deliver the products the NHS needs
11. Types of projects being funded (but not
limited to)
• informatics
• data analytics and advanced visualisation

• technologies that, for example, improve access to healthcare or help
treatment compliance
• emerging digital health technologies with a demonstrated healthcare
benefit, such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, augmented
reality, blockchain and the Internet of Things
• digital technologies and products which help overcome privacy
challenges of managing data
• digitally-enabled medical technologies
12. In this competition we WON’T fund projects that:
• don’t have digital technology as the project core
• focus on developing medical devices (unless enabled using digital
technology as a core component)

The Digital Health Technology Catalyst is a new £35m funding programme to be run over 4 years, with the first competition now open. I will refer to it during the presentation as DHTC for short. The DHTC, which is largely based on the highly successful BioMedical Catalyst is being funded through the Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund and was a recommendation of the Accelerated Access Review. The goals are aligned with those of the National Information Board.
address specific market failures so that the digital health sector can grow
deliver transformative, cost-effective technologies to patients more quickly
[The role of the National Information Board is to put data and technology safely to work for patients, service users, citizens and the professionals who serve them. The NIB brings together national health and care organisations from the NHS, public health, clinical science, social care and local government, along with appointed independent representatives to develop the strategic priorities for data and technology.]
This new catalyst scheme has been designed to support SMEs developing innovative health solutions underpinned by digital technology.
Digital health is evolving at a rapid pace and this is having a profound impact on healthcare delivery. Digital health uses data and technology to:
- improve patient outcomes; improve access to healthcare; make more targeted and personalised health interventions;
transform service delivery; and to deliver new treatments and translational medicine
My intention is to make the DHTC an agile initiative, learning from competitions, stakeholders and the digital health environment and adapting as we go. With this being the first DHTC call, we have deliberately gone with a broad scope as you will see further in the presentation.

There are two types of awards in this round: feasibility; and industrial research & experimental development.
You may already be familiar with these terms from our Funding Rules, but it is critical you pay careful attention to the specific criteria specified for the awards in the guidance for this round – and every subsequent round.
Catalyst schemes have a broad over-arching goal but the scope of every award within a Catalyst is different, so you need to look at the criteria to decide which specific award is most suitable for you.
I will run through the Eligibility criteria for each award first then cover the scope for each separately.

Feasibility awards allow you to explore and evaluate the commercial potential of an innovative digital health idea.
The next two slides explain the scope of the Feasibility award in this round.

Proposals for this award must offer digital approaches to delivery and must demonstrate:

As I mentioned earlier with this being the first Digital Health Technology Catalyst we have gone very broad and we are looking for a wide base of projects under-pinned by digital technologies. The types of approaches we will fund include:

It is very important that as well as looking at the specific scope for each of the individual awards, you take note of what is NOT in scope when you consider whether you should prepare an application. We regularly receive applications for competitions which are out of scope or which do not fit within the relevant eligibility criteria, which is frustrating for all concerned.
Just to clarify the double negative here: all projects MUST HAVE digital technology as the project core
We won’t fund projects which [read last 3]
Whichever award you decide to apply for, please remember:

Helen: can only apply for one in this round? Can apply for other Catalyst as well?
Can only apply with same project twice to any Innovate UK competition
Just to re-iterate, industrial research and experimental projects must be collaborative and we highly encourage collaboration with an NHS organisation.
Here’s a final summary of the eligibility criteria for each of the awards in this round.
Under our new system there is no separate deadline for registration, just a deadline for submitting your application. This is a NOON deadline and we don’t make exceptions for people with technical issues or any other reason for missing the deadline. Do not leave it to the last day to apply as traffic on the website is high and Customer Support will be very busy.
No exceptions so don’t risk leaving it until the last minute. Upload early, and double-check that all your documents including JeS forms (for academic collaborators) have been uploaded, by logging out and logging back in again and checking they show on your ftp upload list.
