The†standard†PSA†system†is†comprised†of†four†major
operations:†Feed†Air†Compression;†Feed†Air†Pre-treat-
ment;†Adsorption/Desorption;†Product†Delivery.
Feed†Air†Compression
Atmospheric†air†is†elevated†to†high†pressure†by†a
packaged†air†compressor.
Feed†Air†Pre-treatment
The†high-pressure†feed†air†from†the†compressor†passes
through†a†mist†eliminator†to†remove†water†droplets†and
entrained†oil.†The†air†then†passes†through†the†carbon
filter†to†remove†oil†vapors†prior†to†entering†the†buffer
tank.
Adsorption/Desorption
The†ìtreatedî†air†enters†an†adsorption†tower†where†it†is
contacted†with†carbon†molecular†sieve†to†remove†oxygen.
ìPurifiedî†nitrogen†passesto†product†delivery†operation.

When†the†oxygen†capturing†capacity†of†the†onstream
adsorption†tower†is†diminished,†the†feed†flow†process
valves†switch†to†a†second†adsorption†tower.††The†first
adsorption†tower†is†then†depressurised†rapidly†and
purged†to†remove†the†adsorbed†oxygen.†When†the†second
bed†becomes†saturated†with†oxygen,†the†feed†flow†process
valves†switch†back†to†the†first†adsorption†tower†and†the
cycle†begins†again.
Product†Delivery
The†ìpurifiedî†nitrogen†enters†a†nitrogen†receiver†tank†that
provides†gas†to†the†adsorber†vessels†during†product†re-
pressurisation†and†nitrogen†buffer†capacity.†The†nitrogen
purity†is†continuously†monitored†by†an†oxygen†analyser
prior†to†delivery†to†the†customer†houseline.
Should†the†oxygen†level†rise†above†the†preset†alarm†point,
the†product†delivery†valves†isolate†any†off-specification
product†from†the†customer†houseline.†The†system†will
automatically†enter†a†ìclean-upî†mode†and†product
delivery†will†resume†when†the†nitrogen†purity†is†within
specification.†A†flow†control†system†prevents†system
overdraw.

Technology at Work
Absolut has been a leading innovator in adsorption systems
based on molecular sieves.
In our Industrial Oxygen Generator Series, Absolut offers low
capital cost, energy & manpower efficient; reliabe oxygen
gas systems to cater to consumers with low requirement of
oxygen. Such nitrogen systems utilizes Zeolite Molecular
Sieves, a special dessicant having properties of preferential
adsorption of nitrogen molecules from compressed air.
The PSA oxygen systems are
manufacturered utilizing the state-of-art Siliporite Zeolite
Molecular Sieves from CECA S.A., France.
Molsieve uses CECA’s SILIPORITE ® G5000 beads 1.2-2.0
mm size, which is an alumino silicate, type X Zeolite, in lithium
form, having an effective pore opening of 10 angstroms, with
nitrogen adsorption capacity at 1 atm and 25 Deg C as high
as 19-25 Nl/Kg.

7. PSA Oxygen Plant
A PSA (Pressure Swing Adsorption) Oxygen Plant works
on separation of oxygen molecules from air. The system
consists of an oil-lube Screw air compressor, 3 stage
filtration units, and two PSA adsorber beds filled with
special grade of Zeolite Molecular Sieves (ZMS), a surge
vessel and a control panel.
When compressed and purified air is passed on a bed of
zeolite molecular sieve, mainly nitrogen is adsorbed on
its surface, and oxygen enriched gas leaves the tower.
During adsorption in one tower the second tower is totally
regenerated by depressurization to ambient pressure.
The oxygen purity delivered range between 93% and
94%. The nitrogen enriched off gas is vented, with or
without the help of vacuum pump. After about one-two
minute of adsorption, the microprocessor in the control
panel automatically directs the flow of air to another tower
by sequencing the changeover valves.
The oxygen is thus produced on continuous basis, of 93-

ZEOLITE ZEOLITE
As power is the only cost of the oxygen plant, the cost
per NM3 of oxygen can be easily calculated, with help of
the table. For the 93% purity oxygen the specific power
consumed is about 1 KWH per NM3 of oxygen flow. Thus
for a 6 NM3/hr plant, which is equivalent to 1 cylinder per
hour, the power consumed shall be 9 units every hour. If the
power cost is Rs. 6 per unit, then the cost of oxygen from
the plant comes to Rs. 54 per hour or effectively Rs. 54 for
one cylinder equivalent of oxygen. This when compared to
cost of one cylinder oxygen, about Rs. 150-250 per cylinder,
gives you an idea for the substantial savings the oxygen
plant can generate for you.
