The so-called “Painting of four lofty celebrities” (symbolized by plum
blossom, orchids, chrysanthemums and bamboo) is a popular subject in
ancient Literati painting, and orchids in particular, symbolize the
temperament of purity of loftiness. The technique in drawing an orchid’s
leaves and flower is closely associated with calligraphy, stressing
modulation and movement of calligraphic brushwork, which testify to the
ancient aesthetic notion that painting and calligraphy share the same
origin. Gao mainly employs dry ink and swift calligraphic strokes to depict
the leaves of the orchid and add colouring to the stamen, exuding a rustic
and archaic flavor. This shows that this is probably a work of his late years.
The inscription shows that it was given as a gift to his student Lai Ming.
