Zhenhai Tower (also known as The Five-storey Tower), a famous landmark
which stands on the Yuexiu Hill in Guangzhou and was built in the Ming
Dynasty, is the subject of this work. The composition uses a tree in the
foreground to contrast with the tower and tree in the distance. Hills, trees
and rocks in the foreground gradually lead to the faintly colour washed
slope on the right side of the pictorial plane, creating a contrast of
emptiness and solidity. In the far distance is Zhenhai Tower perched on top
of the hill. The work depicts a famous scenic view in Guangzhou in a
carefully composed but realistic style. It is very close to a completed painting.
Zhenhai Tower often appears in Gao Jianfu’s paintings and a number of
sketches and paintings exist. Exhibit No. 130 a sketch in pencil titled
“Zhenhai Tower” and No. 131 “The Five–storey Tower” in the collection of
the Hong Kong Museum of Art can serve as comparisons of Gao’s artistic
cultivations and transformations.
