此圖描繪木棉花（又稱紅棉），花紅如血、雄壯魁梧、枝杆挺拔，春天盛
開時璀燦火苗，因此也被稱為英雄花，成為嶺南廣東的名卉。高劍父作為
嶺南派代表畫家和積極革命份子，對象徵熱血英雄的紅棉情有獨鍾，成為
其筆下題材。其摯友和革命人物的陳樹人也好畫此花，是以紅棉也成為嶺
南派的代表題材。此圖以鮮明而富於深淺變化的紅色渲染花卉，
極具硬挺的肌理，以寫生風格充份表達紅特質美感，烈麗如火，枝杆用筆
簡拙而豪邁，當屬高氏盛年的繪畫風格。
Kapok is the theme of this work. The flowers of kapok are blood red; its
trunk tall and erect. In springtime, the flowers of kapok in bloom are like
the flames of fire, symbolizing the spirit of heroes so it is also known as
the Flower of Heroes. It is a famous flower in the Lingnan area in
Guangdong. As a representative of the Lingnan School of Painting and an
active revolutionary, Gao Jianfu has a special feeling for kapok, so the
flower became one of his favourite themes. His good friend and a fellow
revolutionary, Chen Shuren, also favoured this flower as a pictorial
subject; hence kapok is a representative and symbolic motif of the
Lingnan School. In this painting, the flowers are portrayed in vivid red
with nuances of red to show their strong, vigorous textures and beautiful
colour. The sketching style fully exhibits the unique grace and fire-like
strength of the colour of the flowers. The brushwork is rustic and bold,
typical of Gao’s style at the peak of his career in painting.
