 Cassava – major staple food crop serving as source
of carbohydrates
 Industrial crop for starch, high-quality cassava flour,
chips, sweeteners (high-fructose syrup) and fuel
ethanol
 Cassava is grown throughout the year
 Exceptional adaptability to climate change and
adverse environmental conditions
 Nigeria is the world’s largest producer of cassava
 Over 40 improved varieties developed by IITA-NRCRI
to increase yield from 9-12 t/ha to 30-40 t/ha

Lab (Breeder Seed/stem)
 Nodal cuttings grown in medium-within boxes to
produce new set of plantlets (Foundation seed/stem)
 Plantlets transferred to field for acclimatization and
production of stem cuttings (Certified seeds/stems)
