The independent hotel segment in the United States broke several performance records during the first half of 2015 according to data from STR. Some key stats included having the most rooms available and rooms sold, the highest year-to-date occupancy since 1997 at 61.3%, and the highest year-to-date average daily rate and revenue per available room ever at $116 and $71, respectively. Independent hotels make up 42% of the total US hotel industry and are weighted toward lower hotel segments like economy and midscale. Factors that could affect future independent hotel performance are discussed.
