2. Our team for the project “Using a Learning Management System met via Blackboard Chat on Saturday evening to discuss our
process and assign responsibilities. We discussed the type of instructional content and audience target for this MM project. As
a group we agreed to create a tutorial on the use of canvas, an open, user-friendly, cloud-native learning management system.
We selected our target audience to be facilitators so the tutorial will be based upon basic knowledge for first time users of the
system.
Introduction
❖ The objective for our team project is to develop a tutorial and
demonstration of the Learning Management System “Canvas”, an
open, user-friendly, cloud-native learning management system.
❖ The client has been identified as the Naval Criminal Investigative
Service (NCIS) administrative department.
❖ NCIS is in need of a delivery vehicle for the establishment of an in-
house training program utilizing alternative learning methods in
support of a student-centered approach for professional development
of its global workforce.
❖ Our target audience will be facilitators; the tutorial will revolve around
basic capabilities and functionality for first time users of the LMS.

group plants on making a video explaining new user
basic navigation and course creation
6. Cognitive Theories and Visual Literacy
Spatial and Temporal Contiguity Principle (Mayer, 2009, chapters 7 & 8).
Tutorials will show the steps/tools for course creation at the same time that the learners will be
seeing the information on the screen.
Visual elements allow learners to practice what they have learned in real time. As a video
tutorial, the learners can replay as needed.
Using these various visual and auditory elements, learners will be able to construct an overall
view of the program and how it can fit the needs to their own learners.
Coherence Principle (Mayer, 2009, chapter 12)
To prevent extraneous processing, our project intends to focus on specific information
regarding course creation for this particular audience.
Signaling Principle (Mayer 2009, Chapter 12)
Utilizing on screen cues such as the location of features and elements will assist with the
understanding of important information
Redundancy Principle (Mayer 2009, Chapter 12)
Limiting the on screen text to visual cues will assist in deeper learning from the tutorial and
narration
7. Rationale of Development Decisions
1. Our tutorial will be given using the presentation-modes view. Material will be presented through visual cues
accompanied by audible narration. This is considered a user learner-centered approach because the new material is
process by learner through two modes, visual and text-based (p.8).
2. The goal of our project is for participants to take what they learn through the tutorial and apply it to their own
course set up in Canvas. This takes a knowledge-construction approach in that the participants are using multimedia
as a tool for both learning new information and applying it for their specific purpose (p.17).
3. In this tutorial, we will be using integrated (both word-based and image-based) representations (p. 74). We will
use a video tutorial made using Camtasia to show the steps of creating and populating a course in Canvas. This will
have visual images and audible narration to explain the process. They will be delivered using a simultaneous
presentation of material in that the learner will be seeing and hearing about the same step at the same time, creating a
temporal contiguity (p. 156).

Editor's Notes
Creating a tutorial for the Learning Management System Canvas
Our client is NCIS and we will use examples from one of their courses to demonstrate the capabilities of Canvas.
The project will take into account that the client is new to the use of multimedia as a learning delivery method by creating a user-friendly tutorial.
Learners will be facilitators or training coordinators for NCIS which will be using the LMS for integrating technology into their curriculum development
Learners will be first time users of the system and have little background with instructional system design tools.
Demonstrate to our client the reliability and efficiency of the canvas platform to provide computer bassed training and online collaboration.
Create step by step tutorials that will show learners how to create a course, add different materials, collaborate online, and guide them through the process
The main feature of our tutorial will be showcasing the ease of use to the learners. Since our learners are interested in the system as a time saving, easy to use program, it will be important to highlight features that exemplify that. Using Camtasia to make our tutorial allows us to record our screen as we are working through the basics of the program. We can also add visual elements such as arrows and text to draw the learners focus to a specific section of the program.
By creating tutorials showing the various steps and tools of course creation while learners view the information on the screen, we will be utilizing the spatial and temporal contiguity principle. This will ensure that learners are not overtaxed with the amount of information that they must focus on at one time. Visual elements will also allow the learners to practice while viewing in real time as they will be able to replay the tutorial as frequently as necessary. Also, using various visual and auditory elements will allow the learners to construct an overall view of the program and how it can fit the needs of their own learners.
By using the coherence principle, we will ensure to prevent extraneous processing by focusing on the specific information necessary for this audience regarding course creation. Canvas is a large Learning Management System and too much information regarding its capabilities would overwhelm the learners.
By utilizing on screen cues (such identifying the location of features and elements) that will signal the learner to important information, we will be utilizing the signaling principle, but we must ensure that limiting the on screen text to these signals will make certain that our learners are more deeply learning from the tutorial and narration as suggested by the redundancy principle.
The rationale behind these decisions is to make the learning experience as simple and understandable as we can for the participants. One way that we will do this is by using a presentation-mode to present the material. This will deliver the information to the learners using both visual and text-based methods. We want this to be a practical tutorial for the participants, so we will use a knowledge-construction approach so that they will be able to use Canvas on their own and create their own course. In order to make is easy for the participants to do this, we will be using an integrated representation in the form of a narrated video tutorial. Canvas is a large learning management system, so by creating videos to highlight the different capabilities of Canvas containing both narration and a real-time example of using the program, the participants will be able to replicate the steps and customize the course to their specific needs.
