2. Codes and conventions used in front
cover
The masthead is use to attract the audiences
attention. To do this I have used a bold font and the
colour red as red was one of the most popular
colours in my survey and it also stands out from the
background of my magazine. I have made sure that
my masthead is as long as the a4 size of the
magazine and that it is big enough to stand out and
be read easily. I also made sure that the Masthead
isn’t too big as it would take up too much space and
I would of ran out of room for other thing such as
the featured articles.
3. The strapline is used to add any
extra information onto the front
cover. In my case the strapline is
at the bottom of the page and
shows the featured artists and
bands in the magazine. I have
done this to conserve space as if
I was to put all the bands in the
centre of the page or at the side
it would’ve took up too much
space which would have been
pointless. I have also used an
easy to read font as it is small
writing and I want the reader to
be able to read what bands are I
the magazine as it would attract
the correct audience.
The date website and price is displayed at
the bottom of the page next to the
barcode. I have done this as well as
putting the motto of the magazine there
too
4. The cover lines are
used to tell the
reader who/what is
featured in the
magazine. I have
used a font which
stands out but also
looks professional
and also put a white
background behind
each and every
cover line as it helps
it stand out more
from the
background. I have
also used a unique
font for the cover
lines as this helps
keep the magazine
professional as well
as helping it stand
out
5. The central image helps set the
magazine’s genre as well as showing
the main featured article of the
magazine. I have used a mid shot of
Natalya as it gives room for other
articles and also it keeps the magazine
looking professional. The clothes that
Nat is wearing suits the magazine as its
sets the indie genre and also her scarf
is red which is one of the main colours
of the magazine. Also her facial
expression isn’t happy or sad it has
attitude which helps attract the target
audience as the target audience is
teenagers. Lastly, I have used a basic
background as otherwise I wouldn’t
have been able to make the text stand
out that much and also it doesn’t
distract the reader from the other
featured articles.
6. Codes and conventions used in my
contents page
The masthead is smaller on the
contents page as it doesn’t
need to attract the audiences
attention. I have used black
and red colour scheme as that
is my main colour scheme for
the magazine and in a way it
puts a stamp on the magazine.
I used a different font to the
front cover’s masthead as it is
not as important as the front
cover
I have included page numbers t help the customer
navigate though the magazine. I have made them
red as this is a different colour to the rest of the
text. I have also made this a darker red than the
masthead as I don’t want the page numbers to
stand out too much
7. The main image on my contents page
shows my main double page spread
article. I did this because my main
featured article is on the front page
and because this is also a main
featured article I though it would be
better to put this on the contents
page. This also continues the indie
genre look as the clothes that they’re
wearing are very indie and also
they’re an indie band. Thirdly, this
helps break up the contents page
and makes it a bit more casual as my
main target audience is teenagers.
8. I have included both
regulars and featured
articles. The reason I
have included the
featured articles as well
is because the front page
doesn’t mention the
page numbers and I want
to make sure people can
find the main articles of
the magazine as most
people buy magazines
for the featured articles.
9. I have used only four fonts throughout this
magazine. Most magazines only use three/four
fonts. The reason I have used four is because
using too many fonts will make the magazine
harder to read as the fonts would distract the
reader and also it keeps the magazine looking
professional. I used one more font that normal
because my magazine is aimed at teenage
indie rock fans so I tried this to make the
magazine more interesting
10. The masthead, in my case, on the double page
spread is the name of the artist and a quote
from the article. I did this because when the
reader turns to the double page spread they
know who it is about and they get a snippet of
what the article is about. I kept the red theme
from the front cover but instead of making the
text red I made the background of the text red
as it stands out better from the background.
The main image medium long shot of the
artist that I am interviewing. I did the picture
in black and white as black and white as this
expresses the indie genre well and is
considered to be “indie” by a lot of people. I
also made sure he was wearing clothes that
can be associated with the indie genre.
11. I kept the same font throughout the article to keep the
article nice and basic. I used a different font for quotes
and the title of the page to help make the article stand
out. I made the background of the article white as the
picture is black and white so it sticks to the theme of
the double page spread and also makes it easier to read
the text.
