Question 4 and 5
1. Question 4
Who would be the audience for your
media product?
Before completing our project we decided that our target audience would be
for both genders maybe more towards female as it is mean to be a romantic film but
there would be some comedic factors so you never know the male form might enjoy
it as well. We originally decided that the age range of our audience would be 10 and
up but then from further production we decided it would be better to be 12+ because
10 year olds may not understand everything going on as they are still quite young.
By making the age range higher it means maybe more would be interested in
watching it as it would appeal to a wider range of people. When creating our film we
aimed it more towards a female audience as it is a romance and its stereotypical that
only females watch them but then we thought we could add some comedic features
to interest some males as it is then a wider audience that would want to watch it. We
thought that instead of just have a female protagonist in the opening scene we would
also have a male protagonist so it then wouldn’t be such a ‘girly’ film.
When we were producing this we thought it would be good to have actors a
similar age to our target audience so that’s why we decided to use two actors both
aged 17, by having them this age it meant that the whole thing could be seen as
more relatable. This is also why we wanted their costumes to be quite mainstream
and cool, to make people relate to the characters. Another reason why we wanted
the music to be quite mainstream so the young people watching know it and think it’s
cool.
As we wanted to make this film a light-hearted romantic comedy we wanted
everyone to be interested in it, the romance genre is generally seen as the ‘girly
chick flicks that men don’t like’ but a recent 2015 survey said that 43% of guys do
actually like chick flick romance films, they just don’t necessarily admit it because
they might get laughed at by their friends or seen and not ‘manly enough’. Overall I
think our film can appeal to everyone.
Question 5
How did you attract/address your
audience?
After we decided who are audience would be we made a questionnaire to see
what types of films people aged 12+ were watching and were interested in, this
questionnaire really helped us while planning and producing our film as all of the
2. answers had a popular choice meaning we could clearly see what they would like to
see. When we asked “What type of main protagonist would you like to see” just
under 70% said female and when we asked “What setting is best for an indie film”
just under half said in a busy city but it was quite close as about 40% said in a quiet
area (small village) so we made the best of both worlds and filmed in a busy city but
we mainly filmed in quieter area of the city (this was also a lot easier to do as we
don’t have access to the type of equipment for good sound and quality). By doing
what the audience wanted it meant that they are watching what they want and they
have helped with the process of producing the film.
For more audience research we made a focus group with the type of audience
members who we thought would like our film. We asked 3 males aged 16 and 17
and we asked 2 females ages 16 and 17, we thought it would be good to ask a range
of different people as it would give us an idea on what to include. When we were
asking the males they all seemed to really like our idea and they did give us some
constructive feedback that we listened to and used while producing. When we asked
the females they both really liked our idea and again they gave us feedback but it
was all very positive. By doing thorough research into what our audience would like
to see it meant that we could use their feedback and include it in the final product, by
doing this is meant that a portion of the audience would be included in the process of
making the film but it could also attract more people.
To attract more people we thought that we should make it relatable to our
target audience and to do this we thought the main protagonists had to be a similar
age to the audience, they had to be in a place that we all know aka Bristol but also in
a location that young people would want to hang out/ go to. We needed the
costumes to be clothes that our audience would like so for the girl a nice dress and
heels and for the guy, branded sports clothes that everyone knows/uses. We wanted
the music to be mainstream as people this age are all mainstream and are basically
the same, but a few of the older people have their own different style.
