colour co-ordinated. This is also a huge part of typical Hip-Hop
fashion.
4. Focus Group
• I chose 5 people at from those who completed
my questionnaire for my focus group.
• All people in my focus group were males aged
between 16 & 19 years of age. This is plainly due
to my magazine being aim at that target group.
• They were asked questions to do with each page
of my magazine. The questions were about the
colours, information, images, and layouts of
pages.
5. What types of colours would you like the
magazine to consist of?
1. “I’d like to see a range of colours. Greens, reds, yellows, blacks,
blues. Colours like that, but nothing too bright. Natural stuff.”
2. “I don’t think you should use that many colours. It’ll make it too
complicated and I don’t like that. It should reflect us. Just stick to
a few colours. Keep it simple.”
3. “If I’m honest, I just don’t want to see black and white. If it’s got
some sort of colour on, I don’t mind, but keep it masculine. No
pinks and stuff.”
4. “Navy, dark purple, black, orange/yellow. I like those colours.
They’ll go together well too, I think.”
5. “I think the best thing would be to use the colours you see us
wearing. That’s really it. Just make sure you use contrasting
colours so it’s easy to read and stuff. I think that’ll be alright.”
6. What information would you like to see on the
front cover?
1. “Not too much info. General stuff, like what we can find in the
magazine. What the main topic is in it. Simple things like that.
Nothing much.”
2. “I’d like to know as much I can about what is in it. I don’t want to
be flicking through it to see what sort of things are in there. I just
want to be able to look at the cover and see everything that’s in
the mag.”
3. “Simple things really. Main article, other important discussions.
Things like that. Maybe a features list, that will tell me what
artists there’ll be articles on in the magazine.”
4. “Only a few cover lines. Nothing complex. My brain can’t handle
too much.”
5. “I would like to see the main topics advertised on the cover.”
7. What would you like to see in the contents
page?
1. “I’d like different sections; like reviews and gigs sections. It would
make it easier for me to find things like that.”
2. “I want there to be a description or something. Just to give me an
idea of what the article is about.”
3. “Not too much writing. I hate contents pages that are packed out
with information. It should be simple. Stick stuff in sections if
that helps, but don’t over do it with info.”
4. “Columns. Keep it all in columns. I don’t want to be looking all
over the page to find one little article. Put it in order as well.”
5. “Section similar topics together. Box all sections in. Keep it tidy.
If it looks simple, it’ll most likely be simple and easy to read. Not
too much writing either. Maybe just like a sentence explaining
the article. Not too much though.”
8. What information would you like for the
interview on the double page spread?
1. “Not too much writing, but I want to know and understand what
the artists are talking about.”
2. “I want to know as much as I can from the article. Don’t make the
font too small though. It needs to be balanced out.”
3. “Quotes. It will make it more realistic if we read what the artist s
saying. It might even help us understand it better with quotes.”
4. “I don’t want to see an essay. It’s a music magazine, not a
newspaper. I want it straight to the point.”
5. “I think a question and answer format would be best if it’s an
interview. It would make it easier to understand, but then it
would seem a bit simple. I don’t think many guys our age like
reading much. Just try and make it simple and to the point.”
9. What images would you like to see in the
magazine?
1. “I want to see pictures that relate to the articles. I want them to
me interesting. Original.”
2. “I’d like to see photos that express things. Not just a photo of a
guys standing there, if you get what I mean.”
3. “Some scenery would be nice. It’ll help set the atmosphere, I
think.”
4. “Abstract images. Like people jumping in mid-air. Things like
that look cool.”
5. “I think the magazine should consist of images of other parts of
hip hop as well as the music. Things like break dancing and
graffiti art would look good mixed in with the other images.”
10. How would you like the double page spread laid
out?
1. “I’d like to have one page with just a picture on. This way I can
use it as a poster if it looks nice.”
2. “I think it would be good if the picture was the background and
spread over the two pages with the text seeming to be a part of
it. It would make it more interesting and might attract me to the
magazine more while I flick through it.”
3. “I would want it to be simple and easy to read. The text should be
in paragraphs and columns.”
4. “The layout of the page should reflect the topic, in my opinion. It
might help with the readers understanding of the article.”
5. “I think it would be nice if the article’s layout reflected the genre
of the magazine and the topic it hand.”
