Genre
Research
What is Genre?
A genre is a style or category of
art, literature or music.
For example different genres of
music can be;
Pop, Classical, Rock, R&B, Hip
hop, Dance, Indie, Country, Jazz
etc
My chosen research
For my music magazine I will be choosing to
do pop. I will be doing this because when
researching the different genre types I found
that I liked pop the best. I like how you can
use so many different colours and the effect
use of space (lack of dead space) on the
cover.
Similarities Between Pop Magazine
Front Covers
1. Every single pop magazine cover
has bright, bold colours that are eye
catching and fun.
2. The front covers are also jam
packed with so much, but it is done
very effectively. Its not like they
have just dumped all the
information on the page they have
done it in a way that it can all be
seen. An example of this being
wacky shapes with the information
put in and the most exciting bits of
information in a bigger and bolder
font.
3. Most of the front covers also have a
theme. This is mainly the colours
used to set a tone of the magazine.
4. The costumes also used on the front cover
are chosen very carefully as they are what
give the reader an impression of what the
article is about. E.g Rihanna has bright red
hair and is wearing a white dress. This
suggests she is fun loving and independent.
Every magazine has bold, clear writing which
stands out . The text isn't always in a straight
line at the top of the page most of the time the
writing is slanted, each letter is a different
colour or in a font with a shadow around. This
all makes the text exciting to read.
6. There is also a big emphasis on boy bands
and girl bands.
7. The sell lines all stand out too, by being put
in boxes or other shapes. The sell lines
contain a little sneak peek into what’s in the
articles. They include pictures to them too so
that you know who the sell lines are about and
most of the time they also have sell lines with
give ways in; these being posters, vouchers
etc.
Similarities Between Pop Magazine
Contents Pages
1. One of the similarities between all of the contents pages is that the
colour scheme stays the same and keeps the magazine looking
professional but still fun.
2. There is a certain layout of the contents pages. They have put the
articles that are in the magazine into categories, so that it is easy to
find out what is in the magazines.
3. On some of the magazines they also have a picture of the front cover
so that readers are able to be reminded in what the main articles are
about.
4. There is also a masthead on the top of every contents page, this is the
largest writing on the page.
5. They put mini pictures in to help show what the articles are about.
6. The writing is kept simple are clear so that everyone can understand
it.
7. There isn't any information overload which is good because you don’t
want too much information.
Similarities Between Pop Magazine
Double Page Spreads
1. On each of these double page spreads there is an
enlarged picture of the artist/s who the article is about.
2. At the start of each article there is a big capital letter to
start. E.g Once upon a time…
3. Also they pull out quotes out and make them noticeable
by putting them in a star/unusual shape.
4. There is also a recurring background theme across the
double page spread to keep it looking smart.
5. Sometimes on the double page spreads they have
posters of the celebrities available to cut out.
6. 6. Most of the articles on the double page spreads are
interview so to make it clear the questions asked by the
interviewer are in one colour and then the answers from
the celebrities are in a different colour to separate it and
make it clear.
