Initial Ideas
Sports drink: This focuses energy from organic sources and plants, so there is nothing artificial, everything is natural.
It will come in a bottle with a sports cap.
The target market are people who like to exercise. The age group who like to exercise. The age group will people in
their 30s-40s, people who want to keep fit, but feel excluded by other sport energy drinks on the market. This will be
aimed at middle class people.
Colours of the sports drink will be natural and organic, but it also must look sporty, but the main focus is energy that
comes from plants.
Simple name should appeal to older people.
Music drink: This focuses on the energy needed for going to music gigs and music festivals. The product will be like
relentless and be caffeine and taurine based. It will come in a can and be fizzy.
The target market would be aimed towards teens, people in their 16s- early 20s. The kind of people who are into
music and have time and money to go to music events.
The colour theme on the drink would be bright and colourful, almost garish, so concentrating that it gives out a lot
of energy. A short catchy, maybe musical based name.
Natural drink: This is a natural energy drink. It is vegan. Packaging is recyclable and everything about this drink is natural
and eco friendly.
Age target market would be focused on younger people, age 18-29. Because of the fun packaging.
Focus on saving the environment. Be supported and approved by vegetarian society, environmental organizations and
animal organizations.
Fresh flavors mixed with water, so it is healthy.
This is for people who need an extra boost in the day. For focus and combat tiredness.
This is focusing on younger people because there is actually no drinks in this market that are healthy and give energy.
To endorse this pop-stars could advertise, this would have a big influence.
Protein drink: This energy drink focuses on people who want to build up muscle.
Focus on bodybuilders, weight trainers and people who go to the gym who want to
have energy as well as protein in a drink. Whilst not having as much calories.
The protein energy drink would be the same shape as a protein shake drinker. This
gives the drinker a clear idea of what this drink is about.
The shape is familiar and also will have connections to the protein shake.
These drinks would not be fizzy and fresh fruit based, but milk based, like a milk
shake consistency. Flavors would be like chocolate, vanilla, strawberry. Then there
could be limited edition flavors like oreo.
The idea is that this over-takes protein shakes, and energy drinks for this target
market. Could be sponsored by famous body builders and worlds strongest man.
Video game drink: This drink is going to be based around people who play video
games. The target market of this drink is going to be teenage boys, 18-26. These
drinks will not exclude girls and women.
I think that these drinks should be based on having extra energy for playing games
longer.
Different and new games appear on cans as limited editions of the versions of
drinks and for advertising campaigns.
The drinks company could have a focus on esports and gaming conventions.
Get famous esports players to be sponsored by the drink OR get famous game
makers to endorse the drink. Also use social media and youtubers to be sponsored
so they advertise the drink.

Here I am starting with initial ideas to show different names and tag lines for the
energy drink.
The drink is going to be an gaming theme
The drink is going to be advertised towards the gaming market.
Teen to early 20 male, concentrated on males but will NOT exclude females like other brands of food have
done, for example the crisp company mccoys, these explain themselves as ‘man crisps’ whatever that means
and goes on to make sure people know, women are not allowed to eat these. This is excluding a small part of
the market which are still valuable.

The tag line should be short and
catchy, so that this is associated
with the name of the product.
Short so it can fit on the can, also
should have video game
references or tendencies.

Font/Colour Scheme development
These tests are going to be a development on the
drink in the style of GTA. This is a popular third
person shooting game. This style on the font cover
is iconic and people will usually be aware of what
the style of font and colour means without seeing
the name of the game.
The colour and flare of this cover is mainly
very feminine, light colours, these colours
are including pastel pinks, pastel greens,
yellow, light blue, red. But then the colour of
these images is then contrasted, with a lot of
black. The images are cut into sections with
black lines. The colour of the images are also
contrasted with the subject matter. Each
picture is a action scene, that looks violent,
for example a car explosion, a man holding a
gun and a scary looking dog.
These colours are the ones that
represent grand theft auto.
These make the game look
classy but violent at the same
time, but not cheap. The
colours all compliment each
other and have matching
feelings with each other, all the
colours have a cool tone, so
that they look clean and bright.
For the text it is
always a white font,
with black outline.
This makes the font
stand out against
busy background.
Here you can see where I have tested
and experimented with colours, but it
wasn’t about which colour it was, as
this kind of theme is open to any
colour, but mainly, what kind of
colour. From my research I could see
GTA concentrated on using pastel
colours that were gentle and
appealing. So here I experimented to
see which colours would look better
and most appropriate for my design
on this theme.
For this style I think that I need to keep my font
as a white one with a black, thick outline around
the font. This will keep the feeling of GTA and
also stand out really well on a can and other
advertising. The font will have to be big and the
main feature on my drink to keep the theme and
style going.
Here is an example of how the
font looks better in white rather
than any other colour, as this
looks too messy and confusing, it
also doesn’t look clear and easy to
read.
Over-all, I think that for this colour theme the pastel colours work the best
because these link so well to the GTA game. I think that bright colours
would look more infantile, looking like it directed to a younger audience,
and I also think that it would not be clear on what game theme I was trying
to re-create. I think that the pastel colours have been successful because of
the link to GTA and how well known and popular it is. I also think that on a
drinks can the colours would appeal to female whilst the hard text and
harsh outline makes the style also masculine. So even though the game
GTA is directed to a male audience, I think an energy drink designed in this
way would be very gender neutral and appeal to all genders.
Font/Colour Scheme development
For this theme I have now gone with
a different style and a different
colour pallet. The game I am basing
the colours off is Call of Duty, which
is a war themed first person
shooting game. The main colours in
this game are very dark and
dramatic. The main colours in this
game is green, black and browns. In
the colour pallet this shows the most
popular colours used in these
specific pictures, which really gives
an outlook on what kind of colours
will be used in the game.
Here is a colour wheel
including all the darker
colours of greens, blues
and reds that would be
used in this kind of theme,
to keep the feeling of the
war and violence ongoing
throughout the game.
Here I have clustered together
colours that were in the CoD
colour palette. This is to see
how well the colours work
together and what feeling it
gives off when used, to see if
this would be suitable for a
drinks can.
I think that this theme will have a similar feel to MONSTER,
because of the colours. The colour palette has matching colours to
the colours in CoD, with the blacks and greens. I think they are very
similar in their logo, the style and colour. The style is ragged and
masculine, made to look violent because of the nature of what the
product is about. The colour is nearly the same, neon green that
stands out against the dark background, the green also is styled so
it looks like it is glowing off the screen, made to look like a real
light. These colours give off similar feelings, so the drink looks like
it is targeted towards teen males, which is true. The thing that I
don’t like about this theme is that it isn't inclusive of the female
market, it seems to exclude women and come off too violent.
The font I think that would be something most suited
to the theme of a war type game theme for a drink is
something that is similar to CoD’s font for their
games. Their games are very popular and people
would get the idea that this is a drink for gaming
because of the theme and the font and how it has
been designed. The kind of fonts that I am choosing
are ones that are very bold, large and violent. The
font all have the ragged feeling about them, as if
they are old, distressed and been used. This gives
also a war feeling, that this kind of font has been
dirty and distressed, so it is representing the drink in
this way to link to that kind of gaming theme.
I also think that having two fonts would be effective
on my drink, to break up the logo and the energy
side of the name. For example WIRE would be in the
bold, large and distressed font, where as energy
would be underneath it in a thinner none distressed
font. I wouldn’t want this smaller font distressed
because it might be too hard to read.
I think that the colour choices all work
together really well. I think that the most
unsuccessful colours used on each other
for this theme would be the beige and
light blue, I think these colours do not
portray the kind of feelings I want to give
out. These colours seem calm and
almost feminine, which I don’t want. I
think that the most successful colours
are the dark green background with the
white and neon green text. These are
very similar to the CoD logo and
continues to keep up with a theme of
gaming and that this drink is for gamers.
The only thing I am aware of is that this
could turn out look very similar to
MONSTER energy drink.
Font/Colour Scheme development
For this drink theme colour palette I have decided to go with
the game ‘Fez’ as inspiration for my colours. This game is a
platform game, so it is less serious and more novelty. The
colour theme is very concentrated on simple, vibrant colours,
but the shades of the colours are infantile and child like, to give
the game a harmonious feeling, and that’s what these colours
will reflect on to my drink. Fez uses pixel art, so all the colour
are blocked together rather than colours running in to each
other. Another example of pixel art is the game Minecraft, but
these colours are not as vibrant and fun.
These colours are very simple but
specific. I have taken a typical shot
where the most popular colours
appear, then dissected the colours
down into their own square, so I can
use these colours and make them work
together.
Here I have made a quick scene as an example
of how the colours would be placed. The
colours are all bright and in this instance
because of the subject matter, that this is
meant to look like a scene from a game, then
the colours will match because of things in the
scene, it is appropriate to use these colours
because these are like colours are used in real
life. These colours, are very simple and the blue
and red compliment each other because they
are primary colours, so they also stand out.
These colours would also make the brand very
recognisable against other energy drinks,
because they are not typically put together for
an energy drink.
Font/Colour Scheme development
For the font, I want this to be in keeping with the theme of
pixel art and pixilated games, so that everything matches
and people get the idea it is themed after this genre of
games. I made sure it was in a similar style to Fez but I
found out that if I had made the text in a 3D style it would
become difficult to read and not clear for the consumer. So
I found a version of text was similar to the Fez one, but not
in 3D, in 2D. This was a lot easier to read and gives the style
of pixels still, but in a different way. I found that the fonts
that were see-through on the inside took up too much
space on the background, as there is quite a lot of detail on
this, so little space needs to be taken up whilst still being
clear and bold.
I think over-all the colours and font work really well
together. Because of their brightness they stand out, but
do not clash with each other. What I think also helps
each part of the picture stand out is the different shades
of colour on each subject in the picture, for example the
purple block, the different shading gives it more texture
and helps it stand out. I think the fonts work really well
together because ‘WIRE’ is in its own place, in its own
style of font, but the energy is blending in with the
picture as if it’s a part of the video game scene, for
example it looks like a level-up bar.
Here I went on to develop the idea of an energy drinks can that
follows on from the pixilated idea of old/nostalgic video game.
Here you can see how the pixel art creates this nostalgic feel of an
old game like Mario. I did the pixel art but drawing each individual
square and then building the the colours into a gradient going from
dark to light to dark. It eventually built up to look like a broken and
pixilated background which is interesting and detailed, but not too
over-bearing. Then I added the name of the energy drink in two
pixilated fonts, one straight and one that was more bold. The
bolder font allowed me to fill it with a different colour. This made
my can look more interesting and eye-catching.
Product packaging development
Here is where I created my first idea for my first energy drink
design. I knew this design wouldn’t be my final design, but I knew it
would contribute to my final design, so that’s why I felt this stage in
my development is so important. I started out very simple in the
first stage, helping me get to grips with what kind of layout and
design would work, comparing to what wouldn’t work, and this is
what the top line of the designs are basically showing, what works
and what doesn’t. I found out that a messy set out of words didn’t
work, this didn’t work because it didn’t look professional or neat.
But on the other hand I saw what did work, was three main
elements in a layout, either simple text placed in the middle, text
and a motif or logo and repeated text. Not only from experimenting
I found this out, but also from research that I did into other energy
drinks and how they set out their can, Monster set theirs out with
text and a logo, as does rockstar and many other similar energy
drinks.
Product packaging development
Here I went on to develop my idea of repeated patterns or
words as I found out from the previous slide that this
design/layout looked successful. I wanted to develop this
because of how little I had seen this kind of design used, and I
thought it would be good to create a different and interesting
design that is unique to this genre of drink. I went about using
the repeated word as a background, that would blend in to
the background but also stand out and give information to the
reader, that is an energy drink, I think that this is made clear.
Also I make the title of the drink a part of the logo, to make it
more memorable and also noticeable. It also makes it clear
that this is a gaming themed energy drink, giving more insight
to who is the target market.
Product packaging development
Because I’m still in the initial stage of creating a
design for my energy drink this means I still
need to experiment with different layouts and
styles. So here I tried a more simple style that
could also be successful. This one I felt could
have some faults initially. The first one is the
difficulty being about how you wouldn’t be able
to read the text on it when the design would be
wrapped around the can, it would be difficult to
read and not clear, which would not be
successful. I feel this needs more work and
development before it would be successful. The
good points about this is the colour of the
logo/title being bright and contrasting well
against the background. I also think the message
that this drink has energy comes across well
with the text of ‘energy’, because I had repeated
the word energy over the original word multiple
times, to make it look unsteady and like its
moving quickly.
Task 6: Advert Development
Here I took the the approach of experimenting with a different kind of style that I am
used to. For this advert I wanted to make it look dramatic yet simple, but detailed at the
same time.
I stuck to the black background because of how this worked against the colours, but also
during my research I found out that energy drinks that focus on males and video games
tend to have a darker background, look look more masculine, focusing on darker colours
to contrast against the bright neon greens that other drinks have used for example
monster energy drink and relentles, even though they focus more on extreme sports. .
I wanted this advert to be simple and show what the energy drink does
without being cheesy or over the top. I think the simple idea with the spots
being the energy drink illustrates what the drink entails and how it works.
The dots I have made come out of the boys head represent wires and energy,
like bubbles in the energy drink, giving it that kind of feel.
I feel that this idea of the advert if a good one, but I think that I have not executed it as
well as I would have liked to. The reason I think this is because of the rotoscoped boy. I
think that this element has made the advert not as good as it could have been, but this is
because of time and facilities that I am lacking in, for example I would need a male model
and a real can of my made up project, which would be impossible to get. But in real life a
photo of a teenage boy drinking the energy drink would have been a lot more effective
and dramatic instead of looking like a cartoon.
From that poster I went on a learnt I needed to develop the poster better, in
the poster would not contain any elements that would need models or
humans. So I decided to make the poster more obvious it is advertising an
energy drink that is targeted at video gamers rather than using a stereotype
gamer to represent this drink, so I have just got the outline of a games
controller to represent it instead.
This advert is my favourite so far because of the professional and minimal look of it. I think that
the poster looks minimal but not plain, and think this is really important, so it grabs the readers
attention and doesn’t bore them. I think that it doesn’t appear boring because of all the small
details, like the background, the word energy has been repeated many times across the whole
poster, and the font has been put into an opacity of 16% so it blends into the black and
becomes the background, rather than being a separate part and sticking out. But then one part
of the background is sticking out on purpose and this is the tag line of the drink, ‘get wired’ and
even though this is in line with the energy background it still sticks out because it doesn’t have
any opacity on it and it is also a bright green that has got a glowing effect of it, so this works
well in getting the tagline to stand out and be noticed. Another thing that I like about this is
that is keeps consistent design with a previous can design I had already made.
The only real
concern I have
with this poster is
the actual brand
name of the
drink and if it
doesn’t stand out
enough or is not
big enough. But I
think that
because of the
bright
contrasting
colours they
stand out enough
to be modest but
catch the viewers
attention.
Task 6: Advert Development
This poster I decided to take a different approach to my previous ideas for the
poster. This one has a dark green background to keep the idea of of the COD
army theme still alive, but still taking a different feel with the lighter, fun
colours being introduced. The colours of yellow, red, green and blue being
made more relevant and larger on this poster, in fact being made the most
important thing on the poster. The colours represent the buttons on an xbox
controller, but I feel as if on this poster that is not clear and it doesn’t come
across like that, instead it just looks like different colours from the logo being
repeated. I also think that these colours become over-bearing and too much
to look at when used so much in a small area or space.
The fonts in this poster have been kept the same as in the previous posters I had made,
so this aspect of the posters have been kept consistent, because these fonts are the most
suitable to my product and translate to the target market audience that I want to entice
to buy my drink. But the WIRE that I have put in the different colours I feel has lost its
feeling of video gaming to a certain extent, especially when placed on the green
background rather than being placed in front of the circle of colour it matches with. But I
think the white font works really well and effectively in this instance. It stands out against
the strong colours and brings the poster down and makes it look less infantile.
If I was to develop this further I would think
more carefully about my colours and sizes and a
background or motif to break up the hard khaki
green. I feel this is my least favourite because I
am finding it difficult to be able to improve this
poster as I can’t see how this idea could be
improved because it wasn’t good to start with. This design I created with the one off design I made of the can
previously. This design was a one off and it was something I wanted to
try to break up the dark, masculine designs and vary that a different
design can still be relevant. This design for the poster looks more
friendly and feminine, which is the background, but then the font and
the colours contrast with this. I like this because this contrasts and is
different to similar kinds of drinks like this on the market, so it will stand
out to the others. I feel like the poster with the darker background looks
the best and is the most suitable for this energy drink.
The colours in this design are very organized and matching, and
also minimal. The main colour is grey, which then contrasts with
a white of the ‘get’ and ‘wire’. But then the colour green has
been introduced in the outer glow of of the WIRE which is white
mainly. I thought that with just the the text and the square
background the poster would be too minimal and almost boring
and it also would not be clear what it was advertising. So I
decided to add a game controller motif, to make it clear that this
is a drink for gamers. But then I realised that there is nothing on
this poster telling the reader that this is a energy drink. SO then I
decided to put a picture of a can design to make sure it is clear
and not ambiguous.
I think that this poster and
design look like it is more
marketed towards a
different target market, that
is older and more aged,
because of the more
sophisticated take on the
simple advertising
comparing to the advert
above which is much more
directed at a younger
audience.
Task 6: Final Advert
Task 6: Advert Evaluation
The technical qualities in my work have all been created digitally on photoshop. These technical qualities are mainly focused on fonts, text,
rotoscoping, texture and pattern building. Throughout this piece of work I had to do a few different technical challenges. The first one I encountered
was dealing with how I would present my fonts, working with the colour scheme, the different effects and the perspective to give it. The main product
name, ‘WIRE’ I decided from doing research and development I know I wanted to present it in a way that have never been done before, and that also
gave a reference to videogames, so that this was obvious to the viewer looking a the poster. I went about making sure the xbox theme was clear, so I
put the name of the drink ‘WIRE’ in that style, putting each separate letter in a circle which would represent the xbox button on the controller. I think
this looked effective because I beveled and embossed the circles to make them look like 3D buttons rather than 2D circles, I also think it is effective
because of how easily recognisable it is, and that those colours are iconic in its own way. The next technical aspect of my poster is the second most
important thing on the page. This is the outline of the games controller that is making up some of the background. This breaks up the background text
and the title so that the title is not lost in the background, but the opacity lets the background through so its not lost and cut up, so the advert doesn’t
flow. Another thing that breaks up the background and makes the controller stand out is the texture I have put on the design. This makes the advert
appear more masculine and gritty, making the target market more obvious. I created this gritty texture by first doing a colour over-lay on the games
controller, which I chose a dark, masculine green. Then I made the opacity higher so it became translucent so you could see the background through it
slightly. Then to separate and break the background and the controller up I applied a texture affect on the controller and made it as a half way
intensity, so it was too over-bearing. I then applied a border around the controller to make it stand out and make it its own. I created the controller by
rotoscoping around a picture of a real controller, essentially using it as a template. To compare this to other energy drinks I feel that the texture is the
most similar to monster energy drink, because monster have the M logo which has been given a texture to emulate as if the can had been ripped by a
claw. The aesthetical qualities are first of all very masculine and looks like it is appealing to the male gender. The colour scheme is a really big
contributor to this, the colours are mainly dark, for example, black, grey and green. But then there is a contrast in these colours, that uses small parts
of the advert as a light neon colour, in my advert I have shown it is green, and this is done to make it look as if the can holds a large amount of energy,
this neon green against the black gives a radioactive feel to the product inside of the can. Making it seem as if the product inside is as plutonium, or
something along the lines of that. The other colours that also contrast to the dark background is the main feature of the can, which is the name/logo
of the product. These colours are very important in the showing of who the drink is aimed at, the colours represent the gaming community, these
colours being very familiar to them as they are the Xbox controller colours of the buttons. In other products I find it hard to compare this element of
my can because I have not seen any other product relate to their audience in that sort of way. But I can compare my drink in the way it uses its
colours to appeal to a certain target audience, so the drinks that are dark in colour are seen as masculine, so they are typically male drinks, for
example relentless and monster. I feel that there are plenty of opportunities to be able to develop my work so that it will be better and more
improved. The main aspect that I would develop on is the fact that on the poster there is no obvious way of telling that this poster is advertising a
drink, it could be advertising any product in the gaming and male genre. I feel that I could develop it by adding in some elements that gave away more
information that the poster is advertising a energy drink that is specifically made for the gaming community, to make this more obvious I could add
pictures of the actual can on the poster layout, putting it in the gap in the middle. To also improve this poster to make it more relevant to the modern
day teen the poster could have twitter, Instagram, Facebook and Tumblr links on the bottom of the page. I feel that if I had more time to improve my
work I feel I could have made the poster more dynamic, this would have given the poster a more professional feel, for example actually having a
picture of the real can, that had actually been made and produced then a professional picture in a studio is used to take a picture of the can, then this
would be cut out on photoshop and then put on the poster.
I feel that my final piece of work for the advert is fit for purpose to a certain degree. I feel that it could hold more information about the drink on the
advert but at the same time I feel that putting too much or excessive information on the advert would ruin the poster because it would look out of
place with the sleek and well thought out layout of the poster. But I feel that some information that is missed out on the poster could confuse the
consumer, because it is a brand new product, so they would have no idea what it is or what it entails, meaning that the consumer needs as much
information about this drink, so they can decide whether to buy it or not depending on if they know enough about the product from this one poster.
So in my opinion I feel that the poster gives the minimal amount of information needed, without the poster looking crowded and over-whelmed.
I feel like most of my planning went well and to time. The main areas that went the best was the advert development, the part of this was creating
the flat plans of the initial ideas of how I was going to set out my posters, where the text would go, where I would put my picture of the can and
where the graphics would go. To start with this was really quick and easy to get down my ideas on photoshop and plan out how my ideas would
look and experiment with different settings on photoshop to see what would look best and what would work together, I found this easy because of
the research and experimentation I had done before, choosing fonts, choosing colour schemes, so this made it quicker to see which layouts and
backgrounds work together and look most effective without having to concentrate on the colour scheme, because I had already worked it out. I
feel the thing I struggled the most with was the actual idea aspect, after the first two ideas I had completed the flat plan for I felt I struggled to
think of anymore, innovative ideas that were different to what I had made previously. So in my two last flat plans I decided to go off on a different
tangent of what I was creating for advert ideas before. For one instead of having a black background, I chose a green one instead, and made the
cover look as if it was targeting towards a more infantile and younger target audience. Even though I knew this would have too many problems I
still think it was good to experiment with a different style to see how it would turn out. Then I created another completely different style, this time
this was more sophisticated and looking like the style was more directed to the older age of my target market. The design was inspired by more
health drinks like Dr Scheckters organic energy rather than a drink like relentless. I felt this design may entice older gamers, but realised the main
age bracket for gamers are younger and they wouldn’t go for this kind of style, even though the design of the drink was actually nice and sleek.
With more work I feel this design could have gone off on a different tangent and would have been suitable for a different target market. I feel that
my development stage had a significant impact and effect on the final project. The development stage helps you to see what works and what
doesn’t on a design that is specified to a specific bunch of people. The development helps you focus on one key area and helps you to get it right,
before going into making the final piece. Development also helps to realise what ideas are not very good, or how to portray ideas from on your
head on to the computer, the more development the more ideas you create and think of because you are constantly aiming for a better piece of
work, that fits an idea in your head and that matches the brief and target audience. The development also helped me get away from any cheesy
kind of adverts and really helped me to find a style that I could make into a theme so that all my piece of work will match, but be different in their
own way. For example in my work to keep a theme I would use matching colours and matching font, but then in different pieces I could take away
or add some elements for each different piece.
Similar use of colours in
logo/tag line. This gives the
feeling that they could be
aimed at a similar target
market.
You can see here the
designs are similar, so
they would both attract
a similar kind of
market, which would
not be appropriate for
my drink to be
For this part of the poster this is where I have used
different techniques to make the outline of the
controller see-through and I have also given it
texture to break it up from the bust background.
This is also in a similar style to monster but with a
different take on it.
Improved poster
For my poster I felt that after
evaluating it there were some
major and minor faults in it
that I could improve quickly
and easily in some spare time I
had. First the major problem I
had come across was the fact
that the poster didn’t give
away enough information
about what this poster was
actually advertising. I then
decided it would be best to add
more information through the
media of photos, and adding a
picture if the actual can of
drink on the poster rather than
leaving a big blank space. By
simply adding the can I gave
my poster advert an identity,
telling the audience what this
poster is about and why they
should drink it. Then because
the poster has minimal
information on it I had to
redirect them to places where
information can be found
about this drink, techniques I
used was to put addresses of
social networking sites and
email addresses. So
information can be found, but
more clogging the poster up. I
feel like over-all this is the most
successful poster,
Task 7: Product Development
This is the first of my can
development. Here I have taken
the design of my can and stuck it
on to a blank model of a can on
photoshop. Here you can see a
rough idea of what the can would
look like and how the design fits
on to the can and how things
shape with it.
I think that the most
effective side of the can is
the front of it, (the
picture on the left). I
think that the design on
here works the best
around the can, and
nothing is being cut off to
a point where it becomes
unreadable.
I think that the bit of the can that
needs adjusting and the most
development is the side of the
can, you can see the designs don’t
match up exactly and there is not
a uniform gap, so it doesn’t look
neat, but it looks messy and
unprofessional. Another part of
the can that needs to be worked
on is on the back, where the
barcode and recycling and vegan
sign is, it needs to be moved up so
it doesn’t hit the bottom of the
can and get cut off, otherwise this
could cause a problem for me.
My favourite part of
the can is the top
banner along the top
part of the can, I
think that this looks
really good and neat.
I think that this
actually looks a lot
more effective on the
can compared to how
it looks on the flat
plan.
Task 7: Product Development
Here I have put a second can
design that I did earlier and
put it on a can using
photoshop. Here I am
demonstrating what each side
of the can would look like.
Background, front and side. I
think that these have turned
out reasonably well despite
the fact that the colour is
mainly black, which makes it
hard for the shading of the
car underneath to show
through.
I think that the front of the can looks
really effective. I think that the shape
and layout of the design fits perfectly
with the cans rounded shaped, the
roundness of the design
complimenting and flowing with the
can, rather than going against the
flow of the can’s shape. For example
the the round buttons compliment
the cans shape. Then also the shape
of the black in the background, fits
perfectly with the way the can is
shaped.
The most effective parts of the can I think are
the back and the top banner. I think the back
looks effective because of how dramatically it
is taking up the space on the can. How there
is a repeated pattern on the can, which is all
dark and grey, then suddenly there is this
intense glow of green that shines out of the
can, contrasting immensely with its dark
background. I like the amount of space the
text and design take up, I think this looks
sleek and professional.
The other thing that I think is
effective and looks professional is
the banner going around the top of
the can, the way the design has
been laid out means that the
banner fits perfectly and exactly on
the top part of the can, which I
think looks really neat, effective
and professional. I also think that
the colours together work well
together and easily recognisable.
Task 7: Product Development
This is the development
from my last design, but
this time I’m taking it
further and making
different versions of the
same design and concept.
This design is the same as
the last one but this is a
diet version of the drink,
this has less calories and
this is what is really
concentrated on, where I
have added next text,
bringing the readers
attention to the fact that
this has lower calories, 99
calories, comparing to
137 calories in the original
drink.
Another thing I have changed on this design to show it is a
lower calorie version is the colour scheme. Everything on
it has been made paler, less intense. This has been used by
other drinks companies during my research I found that
other drinks companies for example ROCKSTAR are usually
presented in a masculine and dark way, but for the
diet/sugar free version they have gone for a completely
different colour scheme, being now white and yellow, so I
have taken on this technique of displaying that the drink is
lighter and better for you. The main parts that have
changed colours is the WIRE logo in the buttons, the
bands around the top and then the grey background,
these have all changed to give the desired effect.
I think that this idea works well and
the colour scheme translates well
and is not confusing. But I realise I
could not use this as my original
drinks packaging because it doesn’t
give the right masculine feel that I
want to get across to establish with
an audience to start off with.
Here I have made a new design, developing
on from the others on the slides before. The
first design at the top is the colour for the
original flavour, it is green to show that it is
original, so it doesn’t need text on it telling
you this is the original flavour. Taking this
idea from the other energy drinks like
Monster and Relentless. These drinks having
an original and iconic colour so that the
customers know which is the original and
which is a special flavour. I included a whole
game controller in the background to make it
more obvious that this drink is being identified
for gamers. The logo I am keeping consistent,
with the shape of the xbox buttons, and the
colours, keeping the embossing around the
circles to make the circles look more like 3D
buttons rather than 2D circles, which makes it
look more professional.
The bottom design is an extended version of
the design above it, so if the top one is an
original flavour, this bottom one is a version
of a different flavour, by its colours you can
tell automatically its some kind of berry
flavour, because of its purple colours, and you
might assume it is blueberry or blackcurrant.
But because the colour is fairly vague to
showing what flavour the purple represents,
there is some text at the bottom of the can,
which is easily seen with a large black outline
around it, so it doesn’t get lost next to colours
that are similar to it.
Task 7: Product Development
Here I have taken this can design even further by
adding another flavour called ‘Mango zing’. The
colours on the can represent what kind of ingredients
and flavours are in the drink, so for this the main one
is mango because the background is orangeish yellow
similar to the flesh of a mango, then the buttons are
the more minor flavours that give the mango its zing,
such as lime, orange, strawberry and blueberry. I feel
like this colour of the can may be more unsuccessful
than flavours because of its golden tone on the can,
people may mistake it for some kind of irn bru rip off
or relate that to the target audience, and then I
would be selling to the wrong audience.
Because my design was not as successful as the
others, I decided to try and improve this design by
changing the calorie count on it, making it a lighter
version. To show this is a lighter version I have
changed the colours of the design, dramatically
from black to white, this has been done on cans
like Monster and Rockstar also as lower calorie
alternatives. Another important part is the text on
the front, there is a bold sign, boasting how many
calories is in this drink, the colours and brightness
of it almost make it look like the main part of the
can.
Task 7: Final Packaging
Task 7: Packaging Evaluation
This piece is my final design for my can packaging. For the technical aspects of this design, everything was has been created by scratch from photoshop.
The technical aspects focus mainly on the used of fonts and text and editing them, embossing and beveling, creating shapes, layout, textures and
making sure everything has been put in the right place accurately. I felt that getting the effects on the text accurately was really important to help the
design get the professional edge to the look of my can. Technical qualities include for this design I feel the text was one of the most important decisions
to chose, which font would correctly represent my brand, and what would match the feeling of a video game drink and also which fonts would match
each other, what would go together whilst looking different from each other. I feel that the font I found represented the drink perfectly, and the two
different fonts used broke the design up whilst making it flow because they matched, these two fonts I found on da font, these two fonts are called
‘defused’ and ‘broken detroit’ . With the fonts I then put different effects on them, for example on the font I used in the background, repeating the
word energy in the background. With this word I put the font in white then put a high opacity on it, I did this because I wanted to make that the word
didn’t take over the background, and making it mainly see-through makes it less noticeable, but not so that you can’t read it. The next thing I did with
the text in the background was to contrast the background text with a word in the background, so what I did was replace a energy word with the tag
line ‘get wired’. I then put this in a neon type green, then changed the opacity so that it was 0%, then put an effect on the text, giving a outer glow,
making it stand out against the other pieces of repeated background text, making it clear that this is the tag line for the drink, also this is made clear
because of the positioning of it. The colour of the ‘get wired’ was chosen because of inspiration I had for other drinks that I had seen other brands use
and seen that it was effective, for example monster, as they use a neon green colour for their M in their original flavor drink, which is most well known
of them. The next main technical aspect on my drinks can is the creation of the logo and its placement. The logo WIRE with each letter in a separate
circle is emulating the fact that these are in an xbox controller in xbox buttons, to create the look of the buttons to make sure they didn’t look like 2D
circles but actually 3D buttons, so they looked like they were actually coming off of the can, which makes it more obvious what the design of the can is
and also to make it look more professional and like a real design on a real can. The next technical part of this is the layout, I think this is very important
because the placement on the can gives the consumer its first impression, and if the can isn’t lined up correctly then it doesn’t look professional and
people won’t want to spend money on it. I had to make sure everything on the design actually fitted on to the can correctly, nothing being cut off, the
only thing on my final design that has been cut off is the vegan sign, but because of how in real life the design would curve around the can, instead
being cut off, this means it isn’t a problem. The last technical aspect on this can design was actually getting the design on to the can, making it look as if
the design has been rendered on to the can to a certain extent. To get this effect I needed to collect a blank can off of Google images, set this on a
separate page in photoshop on its own, then I clipped a section of my can, I started with the bit that is going to be the front, then I scaled it larger and
put it over the image of the can so the can wasn’t visible anymore. Then I had to cut out the design in the shape of the can, so it was exactly in line with
the can, otherwise important parts of the design could be cut off the can, or it might be scaled incorrectly and the design may become stretched and
this would look unprofessional and not neat. Then when I had cut the design out in the shape of the can using the magic wand tool I then needed to get
the design so it looked like it was on the can by getting the shadows and the lightness on the can through the design. To do this I changed the setting of
the design layer from normal to hard light, it was difficult for the shadows and light to show through because of the darkness and blackness of the
design.
The aesthetic qualities of my work are matching to the poster and this is done on purpose so that
I can make sure that the products look like a pair and like they go together. I have made it dark
and masculine so it is appropriate and attracts the right target market, being teen males that play
videogames. I would compare the aesthetics of this design to other drinks like Monster and
Relentless, because of their focus on dramatic and contrasting designs using colours and fonts,
for example relentless’ font for the front of the can is a very dramatic and stylized, and to some
extent I feel the font I used is similar in this idea of being easily recognisable and unique. The
colours in my aesthetic is also similar to the energy drink monster, the green that is bright and
neon like, to stand out against the dark background, which both my drink and monster have in
common. But I also wanted my aesthetic to look different, to stand out from the rest of the
energy drinks, and I feel it does this by the amount of detail that is included in the design
especially in the background of the cans design. The detail being the repeated word in the
background of the energy, then the changing of this word to two words ‘get wired’ which fit
perfectly into the gap, detail like this makes my design look more professional and well thought
about but at the same time its not too much on the can and it doesn’t look too busy. I think this
attention to detail will entice people to buy the drink because it look more attractive than a
regular can of energy drink because it looks like more thought has gone into the design.
I feel in my design there is room for further development, to make the can even better, to make it
more obvious who the target market is, I feel this would be the most important thing to work on, so
manipulating the original design now to get it to appeal even more to gamers, doing special editions
where the can design teams up with new and upcoming games, then including the game in the design,
so gamers would recognise these games then associate the game with the drink. I feel the design could
also be made more relevant by adding different social networking links on their, so the drink has some
place on the internet, like Twitter and Instagram, making the drink feel more personal and less
corporate. I feel I could also improve the design by making it neater, sharper and more exact, by
zooming in further on photoshop to see how exact the lines and pixels are. I feel I could also improve
the nutritional information, making it more obvious what is in the drink, setting out the boxes of
information neater and making them bolder and easier to read. I think that my final pieces are fit for
purpose, I feel like they would appeal to a male, younger gaming market, but it also advertises an
energy drink meant for a niche market that hasn’t been tackled, the gaming market despite being big
consumers of energy drinks. My drink concentrates on the fact that if you drink this, you will become
more alert and has faster reflexes to be able to win games and complete them quicker. I feel that this
stigma that goes along with the drink could be made more obvious on the can, but its fairly vague on
the can comparing to advertising poster, which do tell you this information, a lot like other energy
drinks like Rockstar and Relentless, who’s adverts concentrate on showing you if you drink this drink
you will become better and be more focused, also giving their drinks famous faces, comparing the skills
of a normal person to a celeb claiming their skills will be on par.
Task 7: Packaging Evaluation
I think that the best areas of planning were the initial ideas of deciding of what kind of drink I was going to create, what kind of
theme I was going to carry out, knowing I was going to be targeting the gamer audience, there is a lot of different genres and a lot of
different games in the genres, so I decided to go on colour, which colours suited my target audience and which game theme/genre
suited this. I decided on a war theme of games like CoD, concentrating on this masculine, dark theme. I then experimented with
different fonts and colours, although I had a good idea of the kind of colour palette I would be using, dark greens, blacks and
browns. I feel this worked well because I had done a lot of research before hand of what energy drinks based themselves on, who
they sell to and which gap was in the market. So I had a very clear direction of where I wanted to go.
I think that the weakest area of my planning and development was the development of my actual can design. I feel I needed more
time to think of a larger range of ideas, as this range was very small and limited and the ideas I created I feel I was only happy and
could only use one of my ideas. But because of the tight schedule of time I wasn’t able to expand my ideas, or I even hit a wall and
couldn’t think of anymore ideas for a can design without going back to the start and rethinking everything, but there was no time
for that. I think that my final development stages helped me get my final layout and design to the best it could be. It helped me to
get everything looking as professional as I could make it look and as neat as it could. The last bit of development also helped me to
find different and alternative versions of my drinks can, even if I didn’t like it, it still help me show development in my work and that
I had tried different effects and techniques.
Here is the example of the research and development I made
with the colour palette if the drinks can in mind. You can see it
revolving around dark colours associated with war, like
greens, blacks and browns. And you can also see the kind of
style of text that has been used, thick bold letters with marks
or imperfections in them.
Here is an example of how other drinks use
celebrities to endorse their products. They get celebs
to drink the drink, then creating something, making
the audience think that if they drink it they will
become like the celeb and as good as them at the
certain task, in this case for relentless, creating
music.
Task 8: Web Banner Development
Here I have made a web banner that goes across the top of a web page, or that pops up on a video. This needs to catch peoples
attention, without annoying them, so to start of I did a basic design and layout, incorporating text from my previous poster and can.
There has been nothing new added apart from the energy sparkles that go around the wire and the circles, then lead to the other side
of the page to the xbox remote controller. Then there is a light green glow at the left side on the controller. I like the starting idea of
this.
On these two I added the can prototype in to make it obvious that the can was being advertised,
that it was an energy drink and not something else, this needs to be made more obvious so on the
next design I will improve it and include some more text to make it clear what is being advertised.
This advert isnt obvious its for gamers, so on the last one I combined the two pieces of graphics
just to show it is for the gamer market who drink energy drinks.
Task 8: Web Banner Development
Here I have developed my advert banner to make it look better and more interesting. I wanted to take it
into a different direction, including some video game graphics to make more obvious that the drink is
trying to appeal to serious gamers or people who just play casually. To start with the layout of this was a
bit messy and I couldn’t see where I was going to put the different graphics because of how small the
area is where I have to work with. To change this design up from the one before I decided to firstly
change the text of the logo ‘WIRE’ from a drop shadow to a bevel and emboss, this makes the advert
seem more gritty and similar to the war video genre. I then added the ‘energy drink’ in a large outline or
stroke, to keep the advert still with the energy drink feel. This is also on shown own my advert and can
development, so there is a link there and shows that I have learnt from my development. Here on this
web banner I changed up the background which I think has made the biggest difference and the biggest
improvement in my web banner. I then moved the logo and the explanation into what the product is
into he middle, to make it the main focus of the advert, making it short, simple and quick.
For this web banner I want to make it more interesting so I am going to add a gif on
the web banner. I want it to be simple because this has to catch peoples eyes, but it
must not become annoying. Looking into adverts on website banners, moving gifs on
these are usually spam, so the gif must not be annoying or irritating.
Here is the technique I used on photoshop to
create the gifs, which you can see is just a
series of still images.
Task 8: Final Web Banner
Task 8: Web Banner Evaluation
The technical qualities of this web banner were the most technical to create out of all of the advertisements so far. Because I had to create a GIF,
this meant making a moving picture, to make it look like almost a short video, this meant I had to duplicate and move the separate layers a little bit
at a time so the image would not jump, and the GIF would not look like it was abrupt and had a glitch. The base of this web banner was created by
graphics I had already made and used for previous adverts, like the poster and drinks can. These being the logo or title WIRE, this was kept the
same, the font and the colour, the only thing I changed on this was the style, I put a emboss on the font, just to make it look different and so it
would stand out against the background. The background is a new feature and it is just a stock image of a big ball of cloud that I have edited a bit
to make it look a bit darker, just to make it look more intense and appropriate for what kind of atmosphere I was trying to create, I then put its
background opacity to multiply, which made the white background surrounding the clouds see through, so that I could layer and overlap more
than one image of cloud, this let me make the clouds to look like they were moving in a time lapse kind of style, making the clouds move up and
right, then the clouds stop moving and ‘get wired’ pops up each word at a time, then disappears one at a time, then the clouds fade out quickly,
then the GIF loops and it starts all over again, this is all happening behind the ‘WIRE energy drink’ logo, which is perfectly still and not animated. To
create the cloud time lapse I had to create a GIF I had to make a timeline, create an original layer, which would be the basis of the GIF and web
banner. I then had to duplicate each layer and then move the clouds a little at a time and keep repeating this on each slide. I then stopped moving
the clouds and added the GET then added the WIRED with it. Then on the next layers I started to fade away the clouds, so then the GIF would loop
on purpose. I wanted the clouds to loop originally without fading, but because of the nature of the pictures and the amount of time I had isn’t
wasn’t possible to be able to make it loop in a more impressive way. I couldn’t do this because of technical aspects with the original picture, the
bottom of the picture of the cloud that isn’t shown is a hard line and doesn’t add up and blend with the top of the cloud, and to fix this would
mean to start all over again, and there was not time for this to be done because of how long it had taken to make the clouds match up originally. I
think that this GIF was the best one out of the 3 because it looked the most professional out of all of them, I think this because of the maturity of it,
I feel that this one is the least annoying and spam like. To compare to the others especially the second one, where the man creates an explosion, I
feel for a web banner this is too distracting and annoying and would not work well as an advert to entice people to buy my energy drink. I also feel
that it is too long for a GIF and takes up too much time to watch people won’t watch it because it’s too much effort to watch it and find out what it
is advertising.
Here are the standard banner sizes that I
could have experimented with. I only
experimented with 2 of the long vertical
and horizontal ones because of the way
my design had to be laid out and how my
ideas worked.
The aesthetic qualities of my work are very much matching to my earlier work of mine with the adverts, the poster and the drinks can. This is
that the aesthetics are all dark and related to a videogame theme, this being of a video game like CoD, which is based around war and shooting.
I wanted to make sure the banner definitely emulated that by using previous graphics that I had used to create this same feeling and theme, I
used the graphics because I knew they matched and I also used them because of how well the theme came across. The main colours I used are
dark, using greys, blacks and green, then I also used the recognisable colours of the xbox buttons, yellow red green and blue. Another colour I
have also incorporated into this is white, I have done this because of how the idea of the clouds worked out, because I couldn’t have a grey sky
as this wouldn’t contrast and show the clouds enough. The white also helped me to loop the GIF, so the cloud can fade into the sky and start
over again by consuming the banner’s background. The fonts I have kept the same because to keep the theme and matching to the previous
work. I have also kept them because the fonts work so well together on their own and together, the feeling of a video game title. I kept the
colours of a neon green for the tag line because of the relation these colours have to energy drinks, for example, monster have coined this neon
green colour as their original colour for the original flavor of drink.
I feel that there are some opportunities for further development in my work, I think that this banner could do with more work on how smooth
the animation is, in some places, especially at the end where it stops for a tiny amount of time which makes the animation more jolty and not as
professional looking as I would want it. If I had more time I would fix this. Another big thing that I would fix on this is the fact that there is no
obvious showing that there is which target market it is for, there is no thing to pick out the gamer community, there is no stereotype
representing and there is not even a little piece of text to show this is meant for gamers. I feel that this has its bad and good points. One I think
that this could open up the target market, this would make it more inclusive, so that more people could feel like they could buy it without being
labeled. But on the other hand the label is what people might go out and buy it for, people might be proud of this gamer association, and if this
banner doesn’t make it obvious they are not going to go out of their way to buy it.
Here is the GIF where I decided to
contrast the dark clouds and
bright colours with a white,
making the gift more dynamic,
interesting and eye catching.
Here the theme colours appear as they are
reoccurring and a theme that is going to
be recognisable to this company and
product.
Task 8: Web Banner Evaluation
I feel that my final piece is fit for purpose but at the same time I think it still needs to be finished and polished off. I
think that it is fit for purpose because of how the the banner presents its self, its not annoying and it would catch
peoples’ attention. I think because of how the same style has been retained throughout the advertisements I have
created, they would be associated with each other, meaning that the lack of obviousness relating to the video
gamer target market, but at the same time there might be a problem and it might not be obvious, so this means I
would need to redesign and add something, if that would be text or some image or graphics to show that this is for
people who play video games and it will make them play better than they ever have. I think this mentality would
really work in the drinks favor because of the competiveness and the nature of the majority of video games, the
main aim is to beat someone else or to win or gain something, whether that is against a computer or a real person.
The main areas of planning and development that worked well was the initial experimentation. The bit where I got
to experiment on photoshop. To start with I was struggling with ideas that would be easy to turn into a GIF, so that
the banner would be effective as a GIF or a JPEG. I first started to just create JPEG banners, mainly a thin banner
size, which can be horizontal and vertical, and I experimented with these two shapes. I felt that the horizontal one
worked the best, so I kept with this and experimented more with it. I then went on to creating GIFs once I had a
basic structure of what I wanted the banner to look like. I started off with the basic structure I used for the plain
GIFS, so I had a foundation style and then I went on to developing the banner to make it more interesting, thinking
what I could make move, what I could add that would be interesting and effective. The part of this project that
could have done with more work was the research side of it, the research to see what other companies have done,
before even starting to design my own web banners. I think this would have helped with giving me ideas, knowing
what has been successful and what is not so effective, even though I am more aware what is unsuccessful,
knowing busy and erratic GIFs are annoying and not effective, which they could be compared to spam. I feel that
getting more planning in this area would have helped me get a larger choice of different layouts and designs to
choose to develop rather than having one or two, which I have just developed and stretched to its extent.
I think that my development stages effected my web banner in a positive way. I feel that because of the lack of
initial ideas I had in the start, it was very important to stretch as much development I could out of these few
designs. I think that my ideas in the end turned out successful or as successful as they had the chance to be, if I
had more time I could work on these initial ideas, adding in new ones, even if they are not 100% successful,
because development could improve them. If I had more time I think that my development stages would be more
colorful in content, I would have more content to experiment with.
Task 9: Storyboard Development
Here I created a story board that is a simple advert for TV, something that is not too
complicated and something that has a good foundation and basis to start off with.
The basis behind this is that there are two guys playing a video game, the guys representing
the target market. And one of them starts to lose the game against their friend. He becomes
upset, then he takes a sip from this energy drink. In the next scene he wins the video game.
And this is because the energy drink has helped them improve their performance.
I also plan to put another scene on the end of the advert to show the whole energy drink and
the graphics that go along with it. This confirms what the advert is going to be about to make
sure there is no confusion about the advert.
Task 9: Storyboard Development
In this next story board the advert will be set out in a video game style, so like the
character in the video game is the main person in the advert, which is an animation
rather than a human. The character basically is low on health and is struggling to
defeat the bad people in the game. He eventually dies, but then drinks some of WIRE
energy drink. The character comes back to life and is like an upgraded version of what
it was before. The storyboard is in platform style of game. I make sure that there is the
graphic scene at the end of this advert, this makes sure that everything in the advert
wasn’t too confusing and if the viewer was still a bit unsure about what the advert is
advertising, this last ending scene will make sure it is clear what the advert was about.
This TV advert is similar to my previous ideas with it involving a video game and someone
playing it, but this time it is a different type of console and also showing the audience a
different perspective, as I think that this technique could be quite effective. It shows a person
failing at playing a video game, then they drink the energy drink and become really good at the
game and win it.
Task 9: Storyboard Development
This advert I felt I wanted to go for a more simple idea, just containing one scene with a voice
over telling everyone what they needed to know about the drink. They would be telling them
the logo slogan ‘GET WIRED with WIRE energy’ and then talking about what the benefits of the
drink are, how it improves your performance in a game, how it will make you beat your other
opponents, making the drinker also last longer, so having more energy without having breaks.
These things won’t be directly said but will be hinted at. I think this idea a lot more simple and
if it’s a short advert it might make people pay attention because it leaves the viewer wanting
more and wondering.
Final story board.
Task 9: Storyboard Evaluation
In my work for my final storyboard I still feel there could be a lot of development to go on with and create. I think examples of this
development would be to create a script for the final advert, something that I would be happy for actors to speak and act out. I feel that
development into the actual story line of the advert, to simply span it out, cut some unnecessary bits out, adding more detail and create
characters that people that are watching will like and will not be annoyed at. I feel like the actual storyline of the advert could do with more
work, to be more specific in details, like what game they were playing, if it was sponsored by game or games company. I think details of the
aesthetic could also be added, like what colour the room we’re in is, what colour the room is what posters are on the wall, what clothes the
boys playing are wearing, these small details count a lot towards the target market and would be appreciated and could also be used as
subliminal advertising. I think that I could also develop my actual story board by creating my own characters and drawings, instead of using
things that are not 100% relevant, dedicating a drawing to the advert to get more of a feeling for what the advert is about and who it is being
sold to, I think these developments would also lead the later developments, like what the actors will look like, how their characters act, which
are all so important to make the advert feel special to the target market and to make them feel like this company understand their target
market. I feel that my my piece is fit for purpose up to a certain extent. I feel that the story board does not show as much detail as I wanted
to, but it’s the same time this story board does it job, it tells the reader what is going to happen in the advert in a simple way, with added
personalization of the can being photo shopped into the story board. To improve this I think that I could have created the characters myself,
making the the background and scenes more detailed. I could create it by hand or by photoshop. This would make it more personal and
clearer about the small details I would want in the advert, it would also be easier for me to get my own ideas across to myself as well as
anyone else looking at it, maybe helping myself to develop it and make it better, but this would have taken a long time to create everything
from scratch and to make it look neat and professional, whilst finishing the idea and making it clear what is being shown in the story board, to
make sure the pictures translate my idea. Because of the time span I had there was only 2 days where I could have completed the story
boards, including the ideas and creating of them, so it would have been impossible to create everything from scratch and complete it before
the deadline.
Characters are all not specially made and not 100%
representative of who I want to represent the target
market. Drawing would make it more accurate, but
again in this early stage it doesn’t matter as much as it
would later on, as long as the cartoon story boards are
clear and its easy to tell what’s going on in this story.
The areas of planning and development that worked well was the actual practical part of creating the idea on the spot, I think
that ideas kept coming to me the more I kept on creating my story boards, so I would gain ideas whilst creating a single idea for
a story board. Experimenting with different ideas by putting them into a thing on the internet that automatically created the
subject matter into a comic-book/story board style automatically. So it was easy for me to quickly translate my ideas into a
form of media without having to mess around with having to create a grid to put them down and having characters already
there to use.
The things in my development and planning stages that I feel that could have done with more work are the initial stages, there
could have been the initial stages of where my ideas birthed from, this was lacking and empty and actually I had not done
nearly as much research as I could have, I think doing extra research, just looking at how professionals create their story boards
for real adverts. I think this would have helped me even get an idea of how professionals go about doing story boards for a real
life advert for TV. This would have been helpful as although I could guess what a story board would be like, I had never actually
seen a real one. Also the content I was not familiar with the amount of detail that needed to be included, so my story boards
may have too much or too little information in them. So in the end I feel like this lack of research may have had an effect on my
story boards to a little extent, meaning they might not be as good as they could have been, but they do fit their purpose and
the actual idea is good which the story board translates through picture and text, so it is clear what the ideas are for the
adverts, also the pictures in the story board are neat and not messy and you are able to look at these pictures and make out
what is going on. I think that my development in the making stages of my story boards is strong because all the ideas I created
were strong but also had scope to improve on them, which is important in the early stages of an idea.
Here the initial stages are not as developed and
detailed as I want. Because on my lack of research
this has effected this part of my project.
This comic book was quick and easy to use, it was
easy to translate my ideas before I had forgotten
them and gave me a good base for if I was going to
carry on and develop the ideas further.

  • 2. Initial Ideas Sports drink: This focuses energy from organic sources and plants, so there is nothing artificial, everything is natural. It will come in a bottle with a sports cap. The target market are people who like to exercise. The age group who like to exercise. The age group will people in their 30s-40s, people who want to keep fit, but feel excluded by other sport energy drinks on the market. This will be aimed at middle class people. Colours of the sports drink will be natural and organic, but it also must look sporty, but the main focus is energy that comes from plants. Simple name should appeal to older people. Music drink: This focuses on the energy needed for going to music gigs and music festivals. The product will be like relentless and be caffeine and taurine based. It will come in a can and be fizzy. The target market would be aimed towards teens, people in their 16s- early 20s. The kind of people who are into music and have time and money to go to music events. The colour theme on the drink would be bright and colourful, almost garish, so concentrating that it gives out a lot of energy. A short catchy, maybe musical based name. Natural drink: This is a natural energy drink. It is vegan. Packaging is recyclable and everything about this drink is natural and eco friendly. Age target market would be focused on younger people, age 18-29. Because of the fun packaging. Focus on saving the environment. Be supported and approved by vegetarian society, environmental organizations and animal organizations.
  • 3. Protein drink: This energy drink focuses on people who want to build up muscle. Focus on bodybuilders, weight trainers and people who go to the gym who want to have energy as well as protein in a drink. Whilst not having as much calories. The protein energy drink would be the same shape as a protein shake drinker. This gives the drinker a clear idea of what this drink is about. The shape is familiar and also will have connections to the protein shake. These drinks would not be fizzy and fresh fruit based, but milk based, like a milk shake consistency. Flavors would be like chocolate, vanilla, strawberry. Then there could be limited edition flavors like oreo. The idea is that this over-takes protein shakes, and energy drinks for this target market. Could be sponsored by famous body builders and worlds strongest man. Video game drink: This drink is going to be based around people who play video games. The target market of this drink is going to be teenage boys, 18-26. These drinks will not exclude girls and women. I think that these drinks should be based on having extra energy for playing games longer. Different and new games appear on cans as limited editions of the versions of drinks and for advertising campaigns. The drinks company could have a focus on esports and gaming conventions. Get famous esports players to be sponsored by the drink OR get famous game makers to endorse the drink. Also use social media and youtubers to be sponsored so they advertise the drink.
  • 5.
  • 6. Mood board(s) Intricate text used in logos is appealing to the target market and also makes the brand look more expensive and of a higher quality.
  • 8. Copy/Script development Here I am starting with initial ideas to show different names and tag lines for the energy drink. The drink is going to be an gaming theme The drink is going to be advertised towards the gaming market. Teen to early 20 male, concentrated on males but will NOT exclude females like other brands of food have done, for example the crisp company mccoys, these explain themselves as ‘man crisps’ whatever that means and goes on to make sure people know, women are not allowed to eat these. This is excluding a small part of the market which are still valuable. Names for energy drink star wire Duty Defense AmmoClick Push Limit Control Black star Auto ON Left Endure Shift drop The tag line should be short and catchy, so that this is associated with the name of the product. Short so it can fit on the can, also should have video game references or tendencies. •Stay in control •Stay wired •Get Wired •Stay ON •Keep ON it •Endure your limit •Pass your limit •Fight your limit •Don’t sleep •Never sleep •Defeat everything • re-think your game
  • 9. Font/Colour Scheme development These tests are going to be a development on the drink in the style of GTA. This is a popular third person shooting game. This style on the font cover is iconic and people will usually be aware of what the style of font and colour means without seeing the name of the game. The colour and flare of this cover is mainly very feminine, light colours, these colours are including pastel pinks, pastel greens, yellow, light blue, red. But then the colour of these images is then contrasted, with a lot of black. The images are cut into sections with black lines. The colour of the images are also contrasted with the subject matter. Each picture is a action scene, that looks violent, for example a car explosion, a man holding a gun and a scary looking dog. These colours are the ones that represent grand theft auto. These make the game look classy but violent at the same time, but not cheap. The colours all compliment each other and have matching feelings with each other, all the colours have a cool tone, so that they look clean and bright. For the text it is always a white font, with black outline. This makes the font stand out against busy background. Here you can see where I have tested and experimented with colours, but it wasn’t about which colour it was, as this kind of theme is open to any colour, but mainly, what kind of colour. From my research I could see GTA concentrated on using pastel colours that were gentle and appealing. So here I experimented to see which colours would look better and most appropriate for my design on this theme.
  • 10. For this style I think that I need to keep my font as a white one with a black, thick outline around the font. This will keep the feeling of GTA and also stand out really well on a can and other advertising. The font will have to be big and the main feature on my drink to keep the theme and style going. Here is an example of how the font looks better in white rather than any other colour, as this looks too messy and confusing, it also doesn’t look clear and easy to read. Over-all, I think that for this colour theme the pastel colours work the best because these link so well to the GTA game. I think that bright colours would look more infantile, looking like it directed to a younger audience, and I also think that it would not be clear on what game theme I was trying to re-create. I think that the pastel colours have been successful because of the link to GTA and how well known and popular it is. I also think that on a drinks can the colours would appeal to female whilst the hard text and harsh outline makes the style also masculine. So even though the game GTA is directed to a male audience, I think an energy drink designed in this way would be very gender neutral and appeal to all genders.
  • 11. Font/Colour Scheme development For this theme I have now gone with a different style and a different colour pallet. The game I am basing the colours off is Call of Duty, which is a war themed first person shooting game. The main colours in this game are very dark and dramatic. The main colours in this game is green, black and browns. In the colour pallet this shows the most popular colours used in these specific pictures, which really gives an outlook on what kind of colours will be used in the game. Here is a colour wheel including all the darker colours of greens, blues and reds that would be used in this kind of theme, to keep the feeling of the war and violence ongoing throughout the game. Here I have clustered together colours that were in the CoD colour palette. This is to see how well the colours work together and what feeling it gives off when used, to see if this would be suitable for a drinks can. I think that this theme will have a similar feel to MONSTER, because of the colours. The colour palette has matching colours to the colours in CoD, with the blacks and greens. I think they are very similar in their logo, the style and colour. The style is ragged and masculine, made to look violent because of the nature of what the product is about. The colour is nearly the same, neon green that stands out against the dark background, the green also is styled so it looks like it is glowing off the screen, made to look like a real light. These colours give off similar feelings, so the drink looks like it is targeted towards teen males, which is true. The thing that I don’t like about this theme is that it isn't inclusive of the female market, it seems to exclude women and come off too violent.
  • 12. The font I think that would be something most suited to the theme of a war type game theme for a drink is something that is similar to CoD’s font for their games. Their games are very popular and people would get the idea that this is a drink for gaming because of the theme and the font and how it has been designed. The kind of fonts that I am choosing are ones that are very bold, large and violent. The font all have the ragged feeling about them, as if they are old, distressed and been used. This gives also a war feeling, that this kind of font has been dirty and distressed, so it is representing the drink in this way to link to that kind of gaming theme. I also think that having two fonts would be effective on my drink, to break up the logo and the energy side of the name. For example WIRE would be in the bold, large and distressed font, where as energy would be underneath it in a thinner none distressed font. I wouldn’t want this smaller font distressed because it might be too hard to read. I think that the colour choices all work together really well. I think that the most unsuccessful colours used on each other for this theme would be the beige and light blue, I think these colours do not portray the kind of feelings I want to give out. These colours seem calm and almost feminine, which I don’t want. I think that the most successful colours are the dark green background with the white and neon green text. These are very similar to the CoD logo and continues to keep up with a theme of gaming and that this drink is for gamers. The only thing I am aware of is that this could turn out look very similar to MONSTER energy drink.
  • 13. Font/Colour Scheme development For this drink theme colour palette I have decided to go with the game ‘Fez’ as inspiration for my colours. This game is a platform game, so it is less serious and more novelty. The colour theme is very concentrated on simple, vibrant colours, but the shades of the colours are infantile and child like, to give the game a harmonious feeling, and that’s what these colours will reflect on to my drink. Fez uses pixel art, so all the colour are blocked together rather than colours running in to each other. Another example of pixel art is the game Minecraft, but these colours are not as vibrant and fun. These colours are very simple but specific. I have taken a typical shot where the most popular colours appear, then dissected the colours down into their own square, so I can use these colours and make them work together. Here I have made a quick scene as an example of how the colours would be placed. The colours are all bright and in this instance because of the subject matter, that this is meant to look like a scene from a game, then the colours will match because of things in the scene, it is appropriate to use these colours because these are like colours are used in real life. These colours, are very simple and the blue and red compliment each other because they are primary colours, so they also stand out. These colours would also make the brand very recognisable against other energy drinks, because they are not typically put together for an energy drink.
  • 14. Font/Colour Scheme development For the font, I want this to be in keeping with the theme of pixel art and pixilated games, so that everything matches and people get the idea it is themed after this genre of games. I made sure it was in a similar style to Fez but I found out that if I had made the text in a 3D style it would become difficult to read and not clear for the consumer. So I found a version of text was similar to the Fez one, but not in 3D, in 2D. This was a lot easier to read and gives the style of pixels still, but in a different way. I found that the fonts that were see-through on the inside took up too much space on the background, as there is quite a lot of detail on this, so little space needs to be taken up whilst still being clear and bold. I think over-all the colours and font work really well together. Because of their brightness they stand out, but do not clash with each other. What I think also helps each part of the picture stand out is the different shades of colour on each subject in the picture, for example the purple block, the different shading gives it more texture and helps it stand out. I think the fonts work really well together because ‘WIRE’ is in its own place, in its own style of font, but the energy is blending in with the picture as if it’s a part of the video game scene, for example it looks like a level-up bar.
  • 15. Here I went on to develop the idea of an energy drinks can that follows on from the pixilated idea of old/nostalgic video game. Here you can see how the pixel art creates this nostalgic feel of an old game like Mario. I did the pixel art but drawing each individual square and then building the the colours into a gradient going from dark to light to dark. It eventually built up to look like a broken and pixilated background which is interesting and detailed, but not too over-bearing. Then I added the name of the energy drink in two pixilated fonts, one straight and one that was more bold. The bolder font allowed me to fill it with a different colour. This made my can look more interesting and eye-catching.

  • 17. Product packaging development Here is where I created my first idea for my first energy drink design. I knew this design wouldn’t be my final design, but I knew it would contribute to my final design, so that’s why I felt this stage in my development is so important. I started out very simple in the first stage, helping me get to grips with what kind of layout and design would work, comparing to what wouldn’t work, and this is what the top line of the designs are basically showing, what works and what doesn’t. I found out that a messy set out of words didn’t work, this didn’t work because it didn’t look professional or neat. But on the other hand I saw what did work, was three main elements in a layout, either simple text placed in the middle, text and a motif or logo and repeated text. Not only from experimenting I found this out, but also from research that I did into other energy drinks and how they set out their can, Monster set theirs out with text and a logo, as does rockstar and many other similar energy drinks.
  • 18. Product packaging development Here I went on to develop my idea of repeated patterns or words as I found out from the previous slide that this design/layout looked successful. I wanted to develop this because of how little I had seen this kind of design used, and I thought it would be good to create a different and interesting design that is unique to this genre of drink. I went about using the repeated word as a background, that would blend in to the background but also stand out and give information to the reader, that is an energy drink, I think that this is made clear. Also I make the title of the drink a part of the logo, to make it more memorable and also noticeable. It also makes it clear that this is a gaming themed energy drink, giving more insight to who is the target market.
  • 19. Product packaging development Because I’m still in the initial stage of creating a design for my energy drink this means I still need to experiment with different layouts and styles. So here I tried a more simple style that could also be successful. This one I felt could have some faults initially. The first one is the difficulty being about how you wouldn’t be able to read the text on it when the design would be wrapped around the can, it would be difficult to read and not clear, which would not be successful. I feel this needs more work and development before it would be successful. The good points about this is the colour of the logo/title being bright and contrasting well against the background. I also think the message that this drink has energy comes across well with the text of ‘energy’, because I had repeated the word energy over the original word multiple times, to make it look unsteady and like its moving quickly.
  • 20. Task 6: Advert Development Here I took the the approach of experimenting with a different kind of style that I am used to. For this advert I wanted to make it look dramatic yet simple, but detailed at the same time. I stuck to the black background because of how this worked against the colours, but also during my research I found out that energy drinks that focus on males and video games tend to have a darker background, look look more masculine, focusing on darker colours to contrast against the bright neon greens that other drinks have used for example monster energy drink and relentles, even though they focus more on extreme sports. . I wanted this advert to be simple and show what the energy drink does without being cheesy or over the top. I think the simple idea with the spots being the energy drink illustrates what the drink entails and how it works. The dots I have made come out of the boys head represent wires and energy, like bubbles in the energy drink, giving it that kind of feel. I feel that this idea of the advert if a good one, but I think that I have not executed it as well as I would have liked to. The reason I think this is because of the rotoscoped boy. I think that this element has made the advert not as good as it could have been, but this is because of time and facilities that I am lacking in, for example I would need a male model and a real can of my made up project, which would be impossible to get. But in real life a photo of a teenage boy drinking the energy drink would have been a lot more effective and dramatic instead of looking like a cartoon. From that poster I went on a learnt I needed to develop the poster better, in the poster would not contain any elements that would need models or humans. So I decided to make the poster more obvious it is advertising an energy drink that is targeted at video gamers rather than using a stereotype gamer to represent this drink, so I have just got the outline of a games controller to represent it instead. This advert is my favourite so far because of the professional and minimal look of it. I think that the poster looks minimal but not plain, and think this is really important, so it grabs the readers attention and doesn’t bore them. I think that it doesn’t appear boring because of all the small details, like the background, the word energy has been repeated many times across the whole poster, and the font has been put into an opacity of 16% so it blends into the black and becomes the background, rather than being a separate part and sticking out. But then one part of the background is sticking out on purpose and this is the tag line of the drink, ‘get wired’ and even though this is in line with the energy background it still sticks out because it doesn’t have any opacity on it and it is also a bright green that has got a glowing effect of it, so this works well in getting the tagline to stand out and be noticed. Another thing that I like about this is that is keeps consistent design with a previous can design I had already made. The only real concern I have with this poster is the actual brand name of the drink and if it doesn’t stand out enough or is not big enough. But I think that because of the bright contrasting colours they stand out enough to be modest but catch the viewers attention.
  • 21. Task 6: Advert Development This poster I decided to take a different approach to my previous ideas for the poster. This one has a dark green background to keep the idea of of the COD army theme still alive, but still taking a different feel with the lighter, fun colours being introduced. The colours of yellow, red, green and blue being made more relevant and larger on this poster, in fact being made the most important thing on the poster. The colours represent the buttons on an xbox controller, but I feel as if on this poster that is not clear and it doesn’t come across like that, instead it just looks like different colours from the logo being repeated. I also think that these colours become over-bearing and too much to look at when used so much in a small area or space. The fonts in this poster have been kept the same as in the previous posters I had made, so this aspect of the posters have been kept consistent, because these fonts are the most suitable to my product and translate to the target market audience that I want to entice to buy my drink. But the WIRE that I have put in the different colours I feel has lost its feeling of video gaming to a certain extent, especially when placed on the green background rather than being placed in front of the circle of colour it matches with. But I think the white font works really well and effectively in this instance. It stands out against the strong colours and brings the poster down and makes it look less infantile. If I was to develop this further I would think more carefully about my colours and sizes and a background or motif to break up the hard khaki green. I feel this is my least favourite because I am finding it difficult to be able to improve this poster as I can’t see how this idea could be improved because it wasn’t good to start with. This design I created with the one off design I made of the can previously. This design was a one off and it was something I wanted to try to break up the dark, masculine designs and vary that a different design can still be relevant. This design for the poster looks more friendly and feminine, which is the background, but then the font and the colours contrast with this. I like this because this contrasts and is different to similar kinds of drinks like this on the market, so it will stand out to the others. I feel like the poster with the darker background looks the best and is the most suitable for this energy drink. The colours in this design are very organized and matching, and also minimal. The main colour is grey, which then contrasts with a white of the ‘get’ and ‘wire’. But then the colour green has been introduced in the outer glow of of the WIRE which is white mainly. I thought that with just the the text and the square background the poster would be too minimal and almost boring and it also would not be clear what it was advertising. So I decided to add a game controller motif, to make it clear that this is a drink for gamers. But then I realised that there is nothing on this poster telling the reader that this is a energy drink. SO then I decided to put a picture of a can design to make sure it is clear and not ambiguous. I think that this poster and design look like it is more marketed towards a different target market, that is older and more aged, because of the more sophisticated take on the simple advertising comparing to the advert above which is much more directed at a younger audience.
  • 22. Task 6: Final Advert
  • 23. Task 6: Advert Evaluation The technical qualities in my work have all been created digitally on photoshop. These technical qualities are mainly focused on fonts, text, rotoscoping, texture and pattern building. Throughout this piece of work I had to do a few different technical challenges. The first one I encountered was dealing with how I would present my fonts, working with the colour scheme, the different effects and the perspective to give it. The main product name, ‘WIRE’ I decided from doing research and development I know I wanted to present it in a way that have never been done before, and that also gave a reference to videogames, so that this was obvious to the viewer looking a the poster. I went about making sure the xbox theme was clear, so I put the name of the drink ‘WIRE’ in that style, putting each separate letter in a circle which would represent the xbox button on the controller. I think this looked effective because I beveled and embossed the circles to make them look like 3D buttons rather than 2D circles, I also think it is effective because of how easily recognisable it is, and that those colours are iconic in its own way. The next technical aspect of my poster is the second most important thing on the page. This is the outline of the games controller that is making up some of the background. This breaks up the background text and the title so that the title is not lost in the background, but the opacity lets the background through so its not lost and cut up, so the advert doesn’t flow. Another thing that breaks up the background and makes the controller stand out is the texture I have put on the design. This makes the advert appear more masculine and gritty, making the target market more obvious. I created this gritty texture by first doing a colour over-lay on the games controller, which I chose a dark, masculine green. Then I made the opacity higher so it became translucent so you could see the background through it slightly. Then to separate and break the background and the controller up I applied a texture affect on the controller and made it as a half way intensity, so it was too over-bearing. I then applied a border around the controller to make it stand out and make it its own. I created the controller by rotoscoping around a picture of a real controller, essentially using it as a template. To compare this to other energy drinks I feel that the texture is the most similar to monster energy drink, because monster have the M logo which has been given a texture to emulate as if the can had been ripped by a claw. The aesthetical qualities are first of all very masculine and looks like it is appealing to the male gender. The colour scheme is a really big contributor to this, the colours are mainly dark, for example, black, grey and green. But then there is a contrast in these colours, that uses small parts of the advert as a light neon colour, in my advert I have shown it is green, and this is done to make it look as if the can holds a large amount of energy, this neon green against the black gives a radioactive feel to the product inside of the can. Making it seem as if the product inside is as plutonium, or something along the lines of that. The other colours that also contrast to the dark background is the main feature of the can, which is the name/logo of the product. These colours are very important in the showing of who the drink is aimed at, the colours represent the gaming community, these colours being very familiar to them as they are the Xbox controller colours of the buttons. In other products I find it hard to compare this element of my can because I have not seen any other product relate to their audience in that sort of way. But I can compare my drink in the way it uses its colours to appeal to a certain target audience, so the drinks that are dark in colour are seen as masculine, so they are typically male drinks, for example relentless and monster. I feel that there are plenty of opportunities to be able to develop my work so that it will be better and more improved. The main aspect that I would develop on is the fact that on the poster there is no obvious way of telling that this poster is advertising a drink, it could be advertising any product in the gaming and male genre. I feel that I could develop it by adding in some elements that gave away more information that the poster is advertising a energy drink that is specifically made for the gaming community, to make this more obvious I could add pictures of the actual can on the poster layout, putting it in the gap in the middle. To also improve this poster to make it more relevant to the modern day teen the poster could have twitter, Instagram, Facebook and Tumblr links on the bottom of the page. I feel that if I had more time to improve my work I feel I could have made the poster more dynamic, this would have given the poster a more professional feel, for example actually having a picture of the real can, that had actually been made and produced then a professional picture in a studio is used to take a picture of the can, then this would be cut out on photoshop and then put on the poster. I feel that my final piece of work for the advert is fit for purpose to a certain degree. I feel that it could hold more information about the drink on the advert but at the same time I feel that putting too much or excessive information on the advert would ruin the poster because it would look out of place with the sleek and well thought out layout of the poster. But I feel that some information that is missed out on the poster could confuse the consumer, because it is a brand new product, so they would have no idea what it is or what it entails, meaning that the consumer needs as much information about this drink, so they can decide whether to buy it or not depending on if they know enough about the product from this one poster. So in my opinion I feel that the poster gives the minimal amount of information needed, without the poster looking crowded and over-whelmed.
  • 24. I feel like most of my planning went well and to time. The main areas that went the best was the advert development, the part of this was creating the flat plans of the initial ideas of how I was going to set out my posters, where the text would go, where I would put my picture of the can and where the graphics would go. To start with this was really quick and easy to get down my ideas on photoshop and plan out how my ideas would look and experiment with different settings on photoshop to see what would look best and what would work together, I found this easy because of the research and experimentation I had done before, choosing fonts, choosing colour schemes, so this made it quicker to see which layouts and backgrounds work together and look most effective without having to concentrate on the colour scheme, because I had already worked it out. I feel the thing I struggled the most with was the actual idea aspect, after the first two ideas I had completed the flat plan for I felt I struggled to think of anymore, innovative ideas that were different to what I had made previously. So in my two last flat plans I decided to go off on a different tangent of what I was creating for advert ideas before. For one instead of having a black background, I chose a green one instead, and made the cover look as if it was targeting towards a more infantile and younger target audience. Even though I knew this would have too many problems I still think it was good to experiment with a different style to see how it would turn out. Then I created another completely different style, this time this was more sophisticated and looking like the style was more directed to the older age of my target market. The design was inspired by more health drinks like Dr Scheckters organic energy rather than a drink like relentless. I felt this design may entice older gamers, but realised the main age bracket for gamers are younger and they wouldn’t go for this kind of style, even though the design of the drink was actually nice and sleek. With more work I feel this design could have gone off on a different tangent and would have been suitable for a different target market. I feel that my development stage had a significant impact and effect on the final project. The development stage helps you to see what works and what doesn’t on a design that is specified to a specific bunch of people. The development helps you focus on one key area and helps you to get it right, before going into making the final piece. Development also helps to realise what ideas are not very good, or how to portray ideas from on your head on to the computer, the more development the more ideas you create and think of because you are constantly aiming for a better piece of work, that fits an idea in your head and that matches the brief and target audience. The development also helped me get away from any cheesy kind of adverts and really helped me to find a style that I could make into a theme so that all my piece of work will match, but be different in their own way. For example in my work to keep a theme I would use matching colours and matching font, but then in different pieces I could take away or add some elements for each different piece. Similar use of colours in logo/tag line. This gives the feeling that they could be aimed at a similar target market. You can see here the designs are similar, so they would both attract a similar kind of market, which would not be appropriate for my drink to be For this part of the poster this is where I have used different techniques to make the outline of the controller see-through and I have also given it texture to break it up from the bust background. This is also in a similar style to monster but with a different take on it.
  • 25. Improved poster For my poster I felt that after evaluating it there were some major and minor faults in it that I could improve quickly and easily in some spare time I had. First the major problem I had come across was the fact that the poster didn’t give away enough information about what this poster was actually advertising. I then decided it would be best to add more information through the media of photos, and adding a picture if the actual can of drink on the poster rather than leaving a big blank space. By simply adding the can I gave my poster advert an identity, telling the audience what this poster is about and why they should drink it. Then because the poster has minimal information on it I had to redirect them to places where information can be found about this drink, techniques I used was to put addresses of social networking sites and email addresses. So information can be found, but more clogging the poster up. I feel like over-all this is the most successful poster,
  • 26. Task 7: Product Development This is the first of my can development. Here I have taken the design of my can and stuck it on to a blank model of a can on photoshop. Here you can see a rough idea of what the can would look like and how the design fits on to the can and how things shape with it. I think that the most effective side of the can is the front of it, (the picture on the left). I think that the design on here works the best around the can, and nothing is being cut off to a point where it becomes unreadable. I think that the bit of the can that needs adjusting and the most development is the side of the can, you can see the designs don’t match up exactly and there is not a uniform gap, so it doesn’t look neat, but it looks messy and unprofessional. Another part of the can that needs to be worked on is on the back, where the barcode and recycling and vegan sign is, it needs to be moved up so it doesn’t hit the bottom of the can and get cut off, otherwise this could cause a problem for me. My favourite part of the can is the top banner along the top part of the can, I think that this looks really good and neat. I think that this actually looks a lot more effective on the can compared to how it looks on the flat plan.
  • 27. Task 7: Product Development Here I have put a second can design that I did earlier and put it on a can using photoshop. Here I am demonstrating what each side of the can would look like. Background, front and side. I think that these have turned out reasonably well despite the fact that the colour is mainly black, which makes it hard for the shading of the car underneath to show through. I think that the front of the can looks really effective. I think that the shape and layout of the design fits perfectly with the cans rounded shaped, the roundness of the design complimenting and flowing with the can, rather than going against the flow of the can’s shape. For example the the round buttons compliment the cans shape. Then also the shape of the black in the background, fits perfectly with the way the can is shaped. The most effective parts of the can I think are the back and the top banner. I think the back looks effective because of how dramatically it is taking up the space on the can. How there is a repeated pattern on the can, which is all dark and grey, then suddenly there is this intense glow of green that shines out of the can, contrasting immensely with its dark background. I like the amount of space the text and design take up, I think this looks sleek and professional. The other thing that I think is effective and looks professional is the banner going around the top of the can, the way the design has been laid out means that the banner fits perfectly and exactly on the top part of the can, which I think looks really neat, effective and professional. I also think that the colours together work well together and easily recognisable.
  • 28. Task 7: Product Development This is the development from my last design, but this time I’m taking it further and making different versions of the same design and concept. This design is the same as the last one but this is a diet version of the drink, this has less calories and this is what is really concentrated on, where I have added next text, bringing the readers attention to the fact that this has lower calories, 99 calories, comparing to 137 calories in the original drink. Another thing I have changed on this design to show it is a lower calorie version is the colour scheme. Everything on it has been made paler, less intense. This has been used by other drinks companies during my research I found that other drinks companies for example ROCKSTAR are usually presented in a masculine and dark way, but for the diet/sugar free version they have gone for a completely different colour scheme, being now white and yellow, so I have taken on this technique of displaying that the drink is lighter and better for you. The main parts that have changed colours is the WIRE logo in the buttons, the bands around the top and then the grey background, these have all changed to give the desired effect. I think that this idea works well and the colour scheme translates well and is not confusing. But I realise I could not use this as my original drinks packaging because it doesn’t give the right masculine feel that I want to get across to establish with an audience to start off with.
  • 29. Here I have made a new design, developing on from the others on the slides before. The first design at the top is the colour for the original flavour, it is green to show that it is original, so it doesn’t need text on it telling you this is the original flavour. Taking this idea from the other energy drinks like Monster and Relentless. These drinks having an original and iconic colour so that the customers know which is the original and which is a special flavour. I included a whole game controller in the background to make it more obvious that this drink is being identified for gamers. The logo I am keeping consistent, with the shape of the xbox buttons, and the colours, keeping the embossing around the circles to make the circles look more like 3D buttons rather than 2D circles, which makes it look more professional. The bottom design is an extended version of the design above it, so if the top one is an original flavour, this bottom one is a version of a different flavour, by its colours you can tell automatically its some kind of berry flavour, because of its purple colours, and you might assume it is blueberry or blackcurrant. But because the colour is fairly vague to showing what flavour the purple represents, there is some text at the bottom of the can, which is easily seen with a large black outline around it, so it doesn’t get lost next to colours that are similar to it. Task 7: Product Development
  • 30. Here I have taken this can design even further by adding another flavour called ‘Mango zing’. The colours on the can represent what kind of ingredients and flavours are in the drink, so for this the main one is mango because the background is orangeish yellow similar to the flesh of a mango, then the buttons are the more minor flavours that give the mango its zing, such as lime, orange, strawberry and blueberry. I feel like this colour of the can may be more unsuccessful than flavours because of its golden tone on the can, people may mistake it for some kind of irn bru rip off or relate that to the target audience, and then I would be selling to the wrong audience. Because my design was not as successful as the others, I decided to try and improve this design by changing the calorie count on it, making it a lighter version. To show this is a lighter version I have changed the colours of the design, dramatically from black to white, this has been done on cans like Monster and Rockstar also as lower calorie alternatives. Another important part is the text on the front, there is a bold sign, boasting how many calories is in this drink, the colours and brightness of it almost make it look like the main part of the can.
  • 31. Task 7: Final Packaging
  • 32. Task 7: Packaging Evaluation This piece is my final design for my can packaging. For the technical aspects of this design, everything was has been created by scratch from photoshop. The technical aspects focus mainly on the used of fonts and text and editing them, embossing and beveling, creating shapes, layout, textures and making sure everything has been put in the right place accurately. I felt that getting the effects on the text accurately was really important to help the design get the professional edge to the look of my can. Technical qualities include for this design I feel the text was one of the most important decisions to chose, which font would correctly represent my brand, and what would match the feeling of a video game drink and also which fonts would match each other, what would go together whilst looking different from each other. I feel that the font I found represented the drink perfectly, and the two different fonts used broke the design up whilst making it flow because they matched, these two fonts I found on da font, these two fonts are called ‘defused’ and ‘broken detroit’ . With the fonts I then put different effects on them, for example on the font I used in the background, repeating the word energy in the background. With this word I put the font in white then put a high opacity on it, I did this because I wanted to make that the word didn’t take over the background, and making it mainly see-through makes it less noticeable, but not so that you can’t read it. The next thing I did with the text in the background was to contrast the background text with a word in the background, so what I did was replace a energy word with the tag line ‘get wired’. I then put this in a neon type green, then changed the opacity so that it was 0%, then put an effect on the text, giving a outer glow, making it stand out against the other pieces of repeated background text, making it clear that this is the tag line for the drink, also this is made clear because of the positioning of it. The colour of the ‘get wired’ was chosen because of inspiration I had for other drinks that I had seen other brands use and seen that it was effective, for example monster, as they use a neon green colour for their M in their original flavor drink, which is most well known of them. The next main technical aspect on my drinks can is the creation of the logo and its placement. The logo WIRE with each letter in a separate circle is emulating the fact that these are in an xbox controller in xbox buttons, to create the look of the buttons to make sure they didn’t look like 2D circles but actually 3D buttons, so they looked like they were actually coming off of the can, which makes it more obvious what the design of the can is and also to make it look more professional and like a real design on a real can. The next technical part of this is the layout, I think this is very important because the placement on the can gives the consumer its first impression, and if the can isn’t lined up correctly then it doesn’t look professional and people won’t want to spend money on it. I had to make sure everything on the design actually fitted on to the can correctly, nothing being cut off, the only thing on my final design that has been cut off is the vegan sign, but because of how in real life the design would curve around the can, instead being cut off, this means it isn’t a problem. The last technical aspect on this can design was actually getting the design on to the can, making it look as if the design has been rendered on to the can to a certain extent. To get this effect I needed to collect a blank can off of Google images, set this on a separate page in photoshop on its own, then I clipped a section of my can, I started with the bit that is going to be the front, then I scaled it larger and put it over the image of the can so the can wasn’t visible anymore. Then I had to cut out the design in the shape of the can, so it was exactly in line with the can, otherwise important parts of the design could be cut off the can, or it might be scaled incorrectly and the design may become stretched and this would look unprofessional and not neat. Then when I had cut the design out in the shape of the can using the magic wand tool I then needed to get the design so it looked like it was on the can by getting the shadows and the lightness on the can through the design. To do this I changed the setting of the design layer from normal to hard light, it was difficult for the shadows and light to show through because of the darkness and blackness of the design.
  • 33. The aesthetic qualities of my work are matching to the poster and this is done on purpose so that I can make sure that the products look like a pair and like they go together. I have made it dark and masculine so it is appropriate and attracts the right target market, being teen males that play videogames. I would compare the aesthetics of this design to other drinks like Monster and Relentless, because of their focus on dramatic and contrasting designs using colours and fonts, for example relentless’ font for the front of the can is a very dramatic and stylized, and to some extent I feel the font I used is similar in this idea of being easily recognisable and unique. The colours in my aesthetic is also similar to the energy drink monster, the green that is bright and neon like, to stand out against the dark background, which both my drink and monster have in common. But I also wanted my aesthetic to look different, to stand out from the rest of the energy drinks, and I feel it does this by the amount of detail that is included in the design especially in the background of the cans design. The detail being the repeated word in the background of the energy, then the changing of this word to two words ‘get wired’ which fit perfectly into the gap, detail like this makes my design look more professional and well thought about but at the same time its not too much on the can and it doesn’t look too busy. I think this attention to detail will entice people to buy the drink because it look more attractive than a regular can of energy drink because it looks like more thought has gone into the design. I feel in my design there is room for further development, to make the can even better, to make it more obvious who the target market is, I feel this would be the most important thing to work on, so manipulating the original design now to get it to appeal even more to gamers, doing special editions where the can design teams up with new and upcoming games, then including the game in the design, so gamers would recognise these games then associate the game with the drink. I feel the design could also be made more relevant by adding different social networking links on their, so the drink has some place on the internet, like Twitter and Instagram, making the drink feel more personal and less corporate. I feel I could also improve the design by making it neater, sharper and more exact, by zooming in further on photoshop to see how exact the lines and pixels are. I feel I could also improve the nutritional information, making it more obvious what is in the drink, setting out the boxes of information neater and making them bolder and easier to read. I think that my final pieces are fit for purpose, I feel like they would appeal to a male, younger gaming market, but it also advertises an energy drink meant for a niche market that hasn’t been tackled, the gaming market despite being big consumers of energy drinks. My drink concentrates on the fact that if you drink this, you will become more alert and has faster reflexes to be able to win games and complete them quicker. I feel that this stigma that goes along with the drink could be made more obvious on the can, but its fairly vague on the can comparing to advertising poster, which do tell you this information, a lot like other energy drinks like Rockstar and Relentless, who’s adverts concentrate on showing you if you drink this drink you will become better and be more focused, also giving their drinks famous faces, comparing the skills of a normal person to a celeb claiming their skills will be on par.
  • 34. Task 7: Packaging Evaluation I think that the best areas of planning were the initial ideas of deciding of what kind of drink I was going to create, what kind of theme I was going to carry out, knowing I was going to be targeting the gamer audience, there is a lot of different genres and a lot of different games in the genres, so I decided to go on colour, which colours suited my target audience and which game theme/genre suited this. I decided on a war theme of games like CoD, concentrating on this masculine, dark theme. I then experimented with different fonts and colours, although I had a good idea of the kind of colour palette I would be using, dark greens, blacks and browns. I feel this worked well because I had done a lot of research before hand of what energy drinks based themselves on, who they sell to and which gap was in the market. So I had a very clear direction of where I wanted to go. I think that the weakest area of my planning and development was the development of my actual can design. I feel I needed more time to think of a larger range of ideas, as this range was very small and limited and the ideas I created I feel I was only happy and could only use one of my ideas. But because of the tight schedule of time I wasn’t able to expand my ideas, or I even hit a wall and couldn’t think of anymore ideas for a can design without going back to the start and rethinking everything, but there was no time for that. I think that my final development stages helped me get my final layout and design to the best it could be. It helped me to get everything looking as professional as I could make it look and as neat as it could. The last bit of development also helped me to find different and alternative versions of my drinks can, even if I didn’t like it, it still help me show development in my work and that I had tried different effects and techniques. Here is the example of the research and development I made with the colour palette if the drinks can in mind. You can see it revolving around dark colours associated with war, like greens, blacks and browns. And you can also see the kind of style of text that has been used, thick bold letters with marks or imperfections in them. Here is an example of how other drinks use celebrities to endorse their products. They get celebs to drink the drink, then creating something, making the audience think that if they drink it they will become like the celeb and as good as them at the certain task, in this case for relentless, creating music.
  • 35. Task 8: Web Banner Development Here I have made a web banner that goes across the top of a web page, or that pops up on a video. This needs to catch peoples attention, without annoying them, so to start of I did a basic design and layout, incorporating text from my previous poster and can. There has been nothing new added apart from the energy sparkles that go around the wire and the circles, then lead to the other side of the page to the xbox remote controller. Then there is a light green glow at the left side on the controller. I like the starting idea of this. On these two I added the can prototype in to make it obvious that the can was being advertised, that it was an energy drink and not something else, this needs to be made more obvious so on the next design I will improve it and include some more text to make it clear what is being advertised. This advert isnt obvious its for gamers, so on the last one I combined the two pieces of graphics just to show it is for the gamer market who drink energy drinks.
  • 36. Task 8: Web Banner Development Here I have developed my advert banner to make it look better and more interesting. I wanted to take it into a different direction, including some video game graphics to make more obvious that the drink is trying to appeal to serious gamers or people who just play casually. To start with the layout of this was a bit messy and I couldn’t see where I was going to put the different graphics because of how small the area is where I have to work with. To change this design up from the one before I decided to firstly change the text of the logo ‘WIRE’ from a drop shadow to a bevel and emboss, this makes the advert seem more gritty and similar to the war video genre. I then added the ‘energy drink’ in a large outline or stroke, to keep the advert still with the energy drink feel. This is also on shown own my advert and can development, so there is a link there and shows that I have learnt from my development. Here on this web banner I changed up the background which I think has made the biggest difference and the biggest improvement in my web banner. I then moved the logo and the explanation into what the product is into he middle, to make it the main focus of the advert, making it short, simple and quick.
  • 37. For this web banner I want to make it more interesting so I am going to add a gif on the web banner. I want it to be simple because this has to catch peoples eyes, but it must not become annoying. Looking into adverts on website banners, moving gifs on these are usually spam, so the gif must not be annoying or irritating. Here is the technique I used on photoshop to create the gifs, which you can see is just a series of still images.
  • 38. Task 8: Final Web Banner
  • 39. Task 8: Web Banner Evaluation The technical qualities of this web banner were the most technical to create out of all of the advertisements so far. Because I had to create a GIF, this meant making a moving picture, to make it look like almost a short video, this meant I had to duplicate and move the separate layers a little bit at a time so the image would not jump, and the GIF would not look like it was abrupt and had a glitch. The base of this web banner was created by graphics I had already made and used for previous adverts, like the poster and drinks can. These being the logo or title WIRE, this was kept the same, the font and the colour, the only thing I changed on this was the style, I put a emboss on the font, just to make it look different and so it would stand out against the background. The background is a new feature and it is just a stock image of a big ball of cloud that I have edited a bit to make it look a bit darker, just to make it look more intense and appropriate for what kind of atmosphere I was trying to create, I then put its background opacity to multiply, which made the white background surrounding the clouds see through, so that I could layer and overlap more than one image of cloud, this let me make the clouds to look like they were moving in a time lapse kind of style, making the clouds move up and right, then the clouds stop moving and ‘get wired’ pops up each word at a time, then disappears one at a time, then the clouds fade out quickly, then the GIF loops and it starts all over again, this is all happening behind the ‘WIRE energy drink’ logo, which is perfectly still and not animated. To create the cloud time lapse I had to create a GIF I had to make a timeline, create an original layer, which would be the basis of the GIF and web banner. I then had to duplicate each layer and then move the clouds a little at a time and keep repeating this on each slide. I then stopped moving the clouds and added the GET then added the WIRED with it. Then on the next layers I started to fade away the clouds, so then the GIF would loop on purpose. I wanted the clouds to loop originally without fading, but because of the nature of the pictures and the amount of time I had isn’t wasn’t possible to be able to make it loop in a more impressive way. I couldn’t do this because of technical aspects with the original picture, the bottom of the picture of the cloud that isn’t shown is a hard line and doesn’t add up and blend with the top of the cloud, and to fix this would mean to start all over again, and there was not time for this to be done because of how long it had taken to make the clouds match up originally. I think that this GIF was the best one out of the 3 because it looked the most professional out of all of them, I think this because of the maturity of it, I feel that this one is the least annoying and spam like. To compare to the others especially the second one, where the man creates an explosion, I feel for a web banner this is too distracting and annoying and would not work well as an advert to entice people to buy my energy drink. I also feel that it is too long for a GIF and takes up too much time to watch people won’t watch it because it’s too much effort to watch it and find out what it is advertising. Here are the standard banner sizes that I could have experimented with. I only experimented with 2 of the long vertical and horizontal ones because of the way my design had to be laid out and how my ideas worked.
  • 40. The aesthetic qualities of my work are very much matching to my earlier work of mine with the adverts, the poster and the drinks can. This is that the aesthetics are all dark and related to a videogame theme, this being of a video game like CoD, which is based around war and shooting. I wanted to make sure the banner definitely emulated that by using previous graphics that I had used to create this same feeling and theme, I used the graphics because I knew they matched and I also used them because of how well the theme came across. The main colours I used are dark, using greys, blacks and green, then I also used the recognisable colours of the xbox buttons, yellow red green and blue. Another colour I have also incorporated into this is white, I have done this because of how the idea of the clouds worked out, because I couldn’t have a grey sky as this wouldn’t contrast and show the clouds enough. The white also helped me to loop the GIF, so the cloud can fade into the sky and start over again by consuming the banner’s background. The fonts I have kept the same because to keep the theme and matching to the previous work. I have also kept them because the fonts work so well together on their own and together, the feeling of a video game title. I kept the colours of a neon green for the tag line because of the relation these colours have to energy drinks, for example, monster have coined this neon green colour as their original colour for the original flavor of drink. I feel that there are some opportunities for further development in my work, I think that this banner could do with more work on how smooth the animation is, in some places, especially at the end where it stops for a tiny amount of time which makes the animation more jolty and not as professional looking as I would want it. If I had more time I would fix this. Another big thing that I would fix on this is the fact that there is no obvious showing that there is which target market it is for, there is no thing to pick out the gamer community, there is no stereotype representing and there is not even a little piece of text to show this is meant for gamers. I feel that this has its bad and good points. One I think that this could open up the target market, this would make it more inclusive, so that more people could feel like they could buy it without being labeled. But on the other hand the label is what people might go out and buy it for, people might be proud of this gamer association, and if this banner doesn’t make it obvious they are not going to go out of their way to buy it. Here is the GIF where I decided to contrast the dark clouds and bright colours with a white, making the gift more dynamic, interesting and eye catching. Here the theme colours appear as they are reoccurring and a theme that is going to be recognisable to this company and product.
  • 41. Task 8: Web Banner Evaluation I feel that my final piece is fit for purpose but at the same time I think it still needs to be finished and polished off. I think that it is fit for purpose because of how the the banner presents its self, its not annoying and it would catch peoples’ attention. I think because of how the same style has been retained throughout the advertisements I have created, they would be associated with each other, meaning that the lack of obviousness relating to the video gamer target market, but at the same time there might be a problem and it might not be obvious, so this means I would need to redesign and add something, if that would be text or some image or graphics to show that this is for people who play video games and it will make them play better than they ever have. I think this mentality would really work in the drinks favor because of the competiveness and the nature of the majority of video games, the main aim is to beat someone else or to win or gain something, whether that is against a computer or a real person. The main areas of planning and development that worked well was the initial experimentation. The bit where I got to experiment on photoshop. To start with I was struggling with ideas that would be easy to turn into a GIF, so that the banner would be effective as a GIF or a JPEG. I first started to just create JPEG banners, mainly a thin banner size, which can be horizontal and vertical, and I experimented with these two shapes. I felt that the horizontal one worked the best, so I kept with this and experimented more with it. I then went on to creating GIFs once I had a basic structure of what I wanted the banner to look like. I started off with the basic structure I used for the plain GIFS, so I had a foundation style and then I went on to developing the banner to make it more interesting, thinking what I could make move, what I could add that would be interesting and effective. The part of this project that could have done with more work was the research side of it, the research to see what other companies have done, before even starting to design my own web banners. I think this would have helped with giving me ideas, knowing what has been successful and what is not so effective, even though I am more aware what is unsuccessful, knowing busy and erratic GIFs are annoying and not effective, which they could be compared to spam. I feel that getting more planning in this area would have helped me get a larger choice of different layouts and designs to choose to develop rather than having one or two, which I have just developed and stretched to its extent. I think that my development stages effected my web banner in a positive way. I feel that because of the lack of initial ideas I had in the start, it was very important to stretch as much development I could out of these few designs. I think that my ideas in the end turned out successful or as successful as they had the chance to be, if I had more time I could work on these initial ideas, adding in new ones, even if they are not 100% successful, because development could improve them. If I had more time I think that my development stages would be more colorful in content, I would have more content to experiment with.
  • 42. Task 9: Storyboard Development Here I created a story board that is a simple advert for TV, something that is not too complicated and something that has a good foundation and basis to start off with. The basis behind this is that there are two guys playing a video game, the guys representing the target market. And one of them starts to lose the game against their friend. He becomes upset, then he takes a sip from this energy drink. In the next scene he wins the video game. And this is because the energy drink has helped them improve their performance. I also plan to put another scene on the end of the advert to show the whole energy drink and the graphics that go along with it. This confirms what the advert is going to be about to make sure there is no confusion about the advert.
  • 43. Task 9: Storyboard Development In this next story board the advert will be set out in a video game style, so like the character in the video game is the main person in the advert, which is an animation rather than a human. The character basically is low on health and is struggling to defeat the bad people in the game. He eventually dies, but then drinks some of WIRE energy drink. The character comes back to life and is like an upgraded version of what it was before. The storyboard is in platform style of game. I make sure that there is the graphic scene at the end of this advert, this makes sure that everything in the advert wasn’t too confusing and if the viewer was still a bit unsure about what the advert is advertising, this last ending scene will make sure it is clear what the advert was about.
  • 44. This TV advert is similar to my previous ideas with it involving a video game and someone playing it, but this time it is a different type of console and also showing the audience a different perspective, as I think that this technique could be quite effective. It shows a person failing at playing a video game, then they drink the energy drink and become really good at the game and win it.
  • 45. Task 9: Storyboard Development This advert I felt I wanted to go for a more simple idea, just containing one scene with a voice over telling everyone what they needed to know about the drink. They would be telling them the logo slogan ‘GET WIRED with WIRE energy’ and then talking about what the benefits of the drink are, how it improves your performance in a game, how it will make you beat your other opponents, making the drinker also last longer, so having more energy without having breaks. These things won’t be directly said but will be hinted at. I think this idea a lot more simple and if it’s a short advert it might make people pay attention because it leaves the viewer wanting more and wondering.
  • 47. Task 9: Storyboard Evaluation In my work for my final storyboard I still feel there could be a lot of development to go on with and create. I think examples of this development would be to create a script for the final advert, something that I would be happy for actors to speak and act out. I feel that development into the actual story line of the advert, to simply span it out, cut some unnecessary bits out, adding more detail and create characters that people that are watching will like and will not be annoyed at. I feel like the actual storyline of the advert could do with more work, to be more specific in details, like what game they were playing, if it was sponsored by game or games company. I think details of the aesthetic could also be added, like what colour the room we’re in is, what colour the room is what posters are on the wall, what clothes the boys playing are wearing, these small details count a lot towards the target market and would be appreciated and could also be used as subliminal advertising. I think that I could also develop my actual story board by creating my own characters and drawings, instead of using things that are not 100% relevant, dedicating a drawing to the advert to get more of a feeling for what the advert is about and who it is being sold to, I think these developments would also lead the later developments, like what the actors will look like, how their characters act, which are all so important to make the advert feel special to the target market and to make them feel like this company understand their target market. I feel that my my piece is fit for purpose up to a certain extent. I feel that the story board does not show as much detail as I wanted to, but it’s the same time this story board does it job, it tells the reader what is going to happen in the advert in a simple way, with added personalization of the can being photo shopped into the story board. To improve this I think that I could have created the characters myself, making the the background and scenes more detailed. I could create it by hand or by photoshop. This would make it more personal and clearer about the small details I would want in the advert, it would also be easier for me to get my own ideas across to myself as well as anyone else looking at it, maybe helping myself to develop it and make it better, but this would have taken a long time to create everything from scratch and to make it look neat and professional, whilst finishing the idea and making it clear what is being shown in the story board, to make sure the pictures translate my idea. Because of the time span I had there was only 2 days where I could have completed the story boards, including the ideas and creating of them, so it would have been impossible to create everything from scratch and complete it before the deadline. Characters are all not specially made and not 100% representative of who I want to represent the target market. Drawing would make it more accurate, but again in this early stage it doesn’t matter as much as it would later on, as long as the cartoon story boards are clear and its easy to tell what’s going on in this story.
  • 48. The areas of planning and development that worked well was the actual practical part of creating the idea on the spot, I think that ideas kept coming to me the more I kept on creating my story boards, so I would gain ideas whilst creating a single idea for a story board. Experimenting with different ideas by putting them into a thing on the internet that automatically created the subject matter into a comic-book/story board style automatically. So it was easy for me to quickly translate my ideas into a form of media without having to mess around with having to create a grid to put them down and having characters already there to use. The things in my development and planning stages that I feel that could have done with more work are the initial stages, there could have been the initial stages of where my ideas birthed from, this was lacking and empty and actually I had not done nearly as much research as I could have, I think doing extra research, just looking at how professionals create their story boards for real adverts. I think this would have helped me even get an idea of how professionals go about doing story boards for a real life advert for TV. This would have been helpful as although I could guess what a story board would be like, I had never actually seen a real one. Also the content I was not familiar with the amount of detail that needed to be included, so my story boards may have too much or too little information in them. So in the end I feel like this lack of research may have had an effect on my story boards to a little extent, meaning they might not be as good as they could have been, but they do fit their purpose and the actual idea is good which the story board translates through picture and text, so it is clear what the ideas are for the adverts, also the pictures in the story board are neat and not messy and you are able to look at these pictures and make out what is going on. I think that my development in the making stages of my story boards is strong because all the ideas I created were strong but also had scope to improve on them, which is important in the early stages of an idea. Here the initial stages are not as developed and detailed as I want. Because on my lack of research this has effected this part of my project. This comic book was quick and easy to use, it was easy to translate my ideas before I had forgotten them and gave me a good base for if I was going to carry on and develop the ideas further.
