2. • The process of transfusing fluid (as blood) into a vein or artery
Transfusion
Blood transfusion refers to the administration of donated blood
products such as
Blood Transfusion
Red blood cells,
Platelets or
Plasma.
Blood transfusion is indicated in the treatment of various
conditions including
Trauma,
Bleeding disorders and
Blood loss due to surgery.
4. It is caused by the body’s immune system
reacting to proteins or other substances in the
donated blood.
Allergic reactionAllergic reaction
Symptoms include:
Itchy skin rash
Swelling of the hands, arms and legs
Chills
Swelling of the lips or eyelids
Treatment :-
slowing down or stopping the transfusion
treating the symptoms with antihistamines
5. Anaphylaxis is a more serious and potentially life-threatening
allergic reaction to antibodies or other substances in the blood.
Anaphylaxis
•Severe shortness of breath
•Feeling faint or clammy
•A rash or swelling of lips or eyelids
The symptoms include :-
Treatment :-
Epinephrine
Corticosteroids
6. Transfusion-related acute lung injury
(TRALI)
Definition :-
An acute lung injury that is temporally related to
a blood transfusion;
It occurs within the first six hours following a
transfusion.
The main symptom of TRALI is trouble breathing
The main symptom of TRALI
Treatment
Oxygen supplementation
Intravenous administration of fluids
Use of diuretics
7. A hemolytic transfusion reaction (HTR) is when the
immune system reacts to the donated blood and
begins attacking the blood cells.
Hemolytic Transfusion ReactionsHemolytic Transfusion Reactions
Signs &Symptoms :-
•Fever, chills/rigors
•Jaundice
•Chest /abdominal /back pain
•Flushing / pallor
Treatment :-
•Intravenous (IV) fluids
•Diuretics
•Heparin
8. Despite every effort being made to keep donated
blood germ-free
Bacterially Contaminated BloodBacterially Contaminated Blood
bacteria can occasionally develop in donated
blood,
•High temperature
•Chills
•A fast heartbeat
•Cold, clammy skin
Symptoms Including:-
Treatment :-
•Stop transfusion
•IV antibiotics
9. Transfusion associated circulatory overload (known as TACO)
It is a blood transfusion condition
that occurs due to a rapid transfusion of a large volume of blood.
TACOTACO
Symptoms :-
•Hypoxemia
•Pulmonary edema
•Hypertension
Treatment :-
•Stop or slow rate of infusion
•Diuretics
•Oxygen
•Supportive care
