A programmable, mechanical device used in place of a person to perform dangerous or repetitive

• the branch of technology that deals with the design,
construction, operation, and application of robots
The study of various types and systems of robots .
INDUSTRIAL AUTOMATION
Industrial automation is the use of control systems, such as
computers or robots, and information technologies for handling
different processes and machineries in an industry to replace a
human being.
CATEGORISATION OF INDUSTRIAL ROBOTS
1. Cartesian robots
2. Gantry robots
3.SCARA robots
4.Articulated arm robots
5.Cylindrical Robots
Cartesian robots Gantry robots
A cartesian coordinate robot (also called linear robot) is
an industrial robot whose three principal axes of control are
linear (i.e. they move in a straight line rather than rotate) &
are at right angles to each other.[1] The three sliding joints
correspond to moving the wrist up-down, in-out, back-forth.
robots with the horizontal member supported at both ends a
sometimes called Gantry robots; mechanically, they
resemble gantry cranes, although the latter are not general
robots. Gantry robots are often quite large.
SCARA robots Articulated arm robots
SCARA Robots are a popular option for
small robotic assembly applications. SCARA is
an acronym for Selective Compliance
Articulated Robot Arm, meaning it is compliant
in the X-Y axis, and rigid in the Z-axis.
The SCARA configuration is unique and
designed to handle a variety of material
handling operations.
An articulated robot is a robot with rotary
joints Articulated robots can range from simple two-
jointed structures to systems with 10 or more interacting
joints and materials. They are powered by a variety of
means, including electric motors. Some types of robots,
such as robotic arms, can be articulated or non-
articulated.
Cylindrical Robots
• Cylindrical Robots have a rotary joint at the base and a
prismatic joint to connect the links. The robots have a
cylindrical-shaped work envelop, which is achieved with rotating
shaft and an extendable arm that moves in a vertical and sliding
motion.
