2. Camera Work : continuous uninterrupted
shots
This is a scene from the horror film " the
shining" . We see a boy ride a tricycle. This
shot is continuous and does not cut
between a different angle. The camera just
follows behind him, this lack of cuts creates
a suspenseful atmosphere as we anticipate
the jumps scare to be around the next
corner, furthermore this stands out from the
rest of film, and really captures the
audiences attention and makes them focus
on every little thing as they try and predict
what is going to happen.
3. Sound: Jump
scare
In this clip from jaws, we see Hooper
go under the water, and find a
shark's tooth, a head then pops put
of nowhere, if we analyze the sound,
we see as he enters the water, the
soundtrack is quiet and slowly
increases in tempo, when the head
pops up we hear it suddenly change
to a really loud orchestral hit , this
change is dynamic range adds to the
impact of the head coming out of
nowhere and makes the audience
feel more surprised.
4. Sound : Building Tension
Although a jumps care can make the audience feel tense for around 10
seconds, to create a tense atmosphere, to put the audience on the edge of
their seat for a couple minutes takes building up the scene slowly. From
my research I gave gathered starting the scene slow , and having the
sound track be something low tempo, this then slowly has sounds added to
it as the scene progress, causing a build up.
Using silence is very effective too, this really brings in the audience's
attention as it stands out from the rest of the scene. In this silence you can
make very quiet sounds such as breathing, gun clicking or even a
heartbeat really loud, this makes it make of a focus and allows the
atmosphere to be more tense.
5. Lighting : Absense of Light
When making a thriller film, having a less light can be seen as a good
thing. Most thriller films, we see scenes set at night , where there is hardly
an natural light, not only does this set a more errie atmosphere, but the
audience have to look more closely at the frame, we see what is going on .
Having only half the face lit up looks cool and has annotations of
something bad about to happen.
