2. Uninterrupted long shot
This technique, is used to make a specific shot
stand out, if you make a shot long on purpose
and no cut to anything else the audience really
focus, and tension is built. In this scene from
the shining we see the boy riding around on a
tricycle around the hotel, the fact the shot is
long is we expect something to pop out of each
corner each time he turns but it dose not until
the very end. This keeps the audiences focus
and creates a lot of tension
3. Using Sound
The soundtrack in a film is really important
to build tension. Having something with a
low tempo slowly increase will create
tension. Having a scene being quiet and then
have something really loud will create a
climax. From this example in jaw’s we see a
swimmer looking inside a tunnel, and then a
head pops up, we hear a grand section of
strings, this is a jump scare. This will make
the audience feel something for 1-3 seconds.
However to make an audience stay on the
edge of their seats we can slowly build
tension through the music, this can be seen in
“zodiac” where it starts really slow, but there
is a huge climax at the end.
