2. Why did this topic resonate with me?
This is a very important topic for me, because of how severe it is both globally and locally.
I have seen first hand and experienced in my own communities how difficult it is to
achieve equitable education when you are lacking resources from things like housing
displacement, and disparities in health and food access. The UN target statement for
universal primary education from their website states that, “In the developing regions,
children in the poorest households are four times as likely to be out of school as those in
the richest households.” and this also relates to countries impacted by conflict as well.
Lack of essential resources is a prominent factor in the education gap, and its poorer
communities of color that are most impacted by this as there is a clear intersection between
educational access and lack of resources for marginalized communities.
3. How can you help locally/ resources
❖ There are many contributions that could be made that are community based such
as looking into organizations that support schooling for children. An example of
this is an after school homework help program for low income families called
New Futures, which is sponsored by southwest youth and family services in
Seattle washington
❖ Donate your time through volunteering to educational enrichment programs
❖ Donate to local food banks
❖ donate to programs that provide housing stability for youth who are in school
4. Where can you personally make the biggest contribution?
Personally for me, i feel that i can make my biggest contributions through looking at
community outreach programs that focus on providing resources for kids in school. I am a
college student and i know that through my university there are programs that allow
students to go volunteer as tutors or just methods of support for after school programs in
k-12th grade. Using my platform is how i can make the biggest contribution, using
resources from my school and community i can branch out organizations that support
people in the same region as me or even branch out to donating money or sending supplies
to orphans in developing countries that lack educational supplies like books or pencils, it is
important to use the internet to expand the horizon of what resources i could use.
5. Is there a feature of social media that can be uniquely
applied to this goal?
In our day and age, social media has become one of the largest outlets of distributing both
information and resources on a global scale, it has connected us in a way that was not
possible before. Utilizing social media is imperative for this goal because it raises
awareness through sharing and uploading content of mission statements and stories of
children, and even provides a space to send donations and supplies to without leaving your
home.We see it being utilized through the united nations as well, as it shares anecdotes and
success stories of children, and shows you statistics that are constantly being updated.
Overall social media is a tool that can be utilized with strong standing organizations and
even smaller communities to connect people to something much bigger than their
surroundings, and that is very important when it comes to raising awareness for educational
gaps for children both locally and globally.
