A short presentation sharing a local organization that aims to end hunger in the Tacoma community. Discusses how such an organization can create a chain of change that can impact the world as a whole.
2. THE UNITED NATION’S GOAL TO END WORLD HUNGER
According to the UN,10% of the Worlds population still lives
in extreme poverty
The United Nations aims to reach a more sustainable and
livable future for everyone. Their first goal listed is to end
poverty and hunger worldwide by 2030.
"By 2030, eradicate extreme poverty for all people
everywhere, currently measured as people living on less
than $1.25 a day"
3. WHY THIS MATTERS
Poverty can be tied directly
tied to hunger. When
people are hungry, they
cannot spend their time
meaningfully as they must
do anything in their power
to make sure they eat. It is
hard for people to get jobs
when they have to wait in
lines to receive food.
If we cannot solve hunger
in our own communities,
how will we be able to
world-wide?
4. A LOCAL LOOK AT
HOW WE CAN BEGIN
TO MAKE CHANGE
Food not Bombs Tacoma is a
single collective among
hundreds that serves their
community by offering food
and other supplied to those in
need.
The collective follows three
major principles: Always began
or vegetarian, non-violence, and
each collective is autonomous
The Tacoma collective also does
more than food drives. The
organization works to solve the
homelessness crisis here in
Tacoma through peaceful
protest and providing resources
for folks to use to camp safely
and comfortably.
5. HOW DO I PLAN TO MAKE THE GREATEST CONTRIBUTION I CAN?
For me, I hope that simply working with and sharing about Food not
Bombs can begin to start a chain of change in my community of
Tacoma and onward. It is a small step toward feeding everyone, and
although it seems difficult, Food not Bombs has grown to multiple
states and countries, feeding thousands of people living in poverty.
It is my hope that when small collectives like Food not Bombs can
make a change, that larger more systemic change can begin to take
place because we know it can be done.
It is also possible, for me and others, to donate to Food not Bombs
Tacoma through their Venmo (fnb_Tacoma) as well as send in physical
items of clothing and camping supplies.
6. HOW SOCIAL MEDIA CAN PLAY A ROLE IN ENDING WORLD
HUNGER
Social media plays an important role in all of our lives.
Food not Bombs has exemplified this fact and used it to
their advantage. Through social media they have garnered
many volunteers and donors to their cause.
The use of social media can bring attention to anything you
see of importance, and you can guide people to resources to
learn more and to help. It is a quick and easy way to spread
the word about new events and what is going on in the
community.
I do not think there is any specific social media platform that
can achieve these goals, as all of them are great to share
information and ideas. I think the ability to contact folks with
ease to donate both money and items is great, and I think
helps build comradery and a desire to make change.
