This document discusses Goal 2 of the UN Sustainable Development Goals, which is to end hunger by 2030. It provides statistics on the current state of global hunger, including that nearly 690 million people are undernourished and 2 billion lack regular access to sufficient nutritious food. The document also discusses how hunger disproportionately impacts children and regions in Asia and Africa. It explores ways individuals can get involved locally to address hunger through volunteering, donations, and use of social media applications like ShareTheMeal.
2. FACTS AND FIGURES
• Current estimates are that nearly 690 million people are hungry, or 8.9 percent of the world
population – up by 10 million people in one year and by nearly 60 million in five years.
• The majority of the world’s undernourished – 381 million – are still found in Asia. More
than 250 million live in Africa, where the number of undernourished is growing faster than
anywhere in the world.
• In 2019, close to 750 million – or nearly one in ten people in the world – were exposed to
severe levels of food insecurity.
• An estimated 2 billion people in the world did not have regular access to safe, nutritious
and sufficient food in 2019.
• If recent trends continue, the number of people affected by hunger will surpass 840 million
by 2030, or 9.8 percent of the global population.
• 144 million children under age 5 were affected by stunting in 2019, with three quarters
living in Southern Asia and sub-Saharan Africa.
• In 2019, 6.9 per cent (or 47 million) children under 5 were affected by wasting, or acute
undernutrition, a condition caused by limited nutrient intake and infection.

• Physiological need is of needs, first level of is Maslow’s hierarchy of needs
• 5 human basic needs are food, water, clothing, sleep and shelter, these are the bare
necessities for anyone’s survival
• I believe every and any human beings should have access to these 5 basic needs in their
lives
1.Physiological- Basic Survival (Food,
drink, clothes, shelter)
2.Safety- The need to be secure and
protected
3.Belongingness/Love- The need to feel
like a member of a family or community
4.Esteem- The need to be recognized as a
person of worth
5.Self-actualization- The need for
personal fulfillment
4. 2. HOW CAN YOUR INTEREST BE
APPLIED LOCALLY?
• There are many ways we can contribute to help our community and people suffering from
hunger.

5. 3. WHERE CAN YOU MAKE GREATEST
CONTRIBUTION?
• There are many ways to get involved and to give
1. Volunteer at these non-profit organizations
2. Attend or host events like food drive
3. Donate food and/or funds
• I could start out as simple as volunteering from my school (Husky volunteer program), they also
hold off campus opportunities like emergency food network
• These funds will help Emergency Food Network purchase bulk food, solicit donations, and
transport food to our partner programs. With every $1 raised, we can provide 5 meals to
someone in need.
6. 4. IS THERE A FEATURE OF SOCIAL MEDIA
THAT CAN BE UNIQUELY APPLIED TO THIS
GOAL?
• ShareTheMeal is a crowfunding smartphone application to fight global hunger through the
United Nations World Food Program. It enables users to make small donations to specific
WFP projects and to track its progress.
• As an innovative part of the World Food Programme, ShareTheMeal mobilizes users to give
through social media. Starting with donations of just $0.50, users can fund a child’s meals
for an entire day. When someone donates, The United Nations’ World Food Program, in
turn, supplies the meals to hungry children.
