1. Digital Graphic Narrative Planning
Use this booklet to help structure your planning and collate your planning documents.
Considerations:
There are lots of things to consider in this project. Fill out each section in detail to show you have thought about each one. You
should imagine that this is a live project, so considerations like cost, quantity and codes of practice must be thought about in that
context rather than just as a college project.
Costs:
I will have no costs during my project. This is because I have no props or anything that I will need to buy for
the creation of my project and also the software, Adobe Photoshop, that I will be using I will have access to
free of charge.
Available resources:
The resources that I have available to me will be Photoshop, pencils, coloured pencils, paper, google images,
Microsoft word.

2. Quantity:
For my book I would like to get it printed to a mass market, however as the story is not as well knows as
others, my book would be printed as a special addition story. This would mean that the amount of the books I
would get printed would be between 400-800 copies. This would also give me an opportunity to look at how a
book like this would sell and this would give me an idea of a market if I was to make another book in the
future.
Audience and Target Market:
My target audience for my book are kids between the ages of 3 and 6 years old. I feel that the way the way
the story has been written it is not complicated and would be easy to understand, so this would suit this age
range well. My target audience that I will be most aiming my book at will be specifically to the middle classes.
This is because the book is a traditional story and I feel that this class would more appreciate the style of the
story. The age range of 3-6 is the stage of childhood when the children may be most interested in fantasy
animals such as giants. I think having a character like that would help the parents to want to buy the story as it
would be a interest of the child and also as it would help with development of the child.
Quality Factors:
As my work will be done digitally on a computer the biggest quality factor would be saving the work. It would
be very important to save the work that I have done in more than one place as this would mean that if
anything went wrong with one of locations of work, such as a memory stick corrupting, I would then have
another place where it is saved so I don’t lose any of my work. For example 2 ways I can save this work would
be on OneDrive and a memory stick.
Another way that I would ensure a quality factor for my work would be spending as much time as possible on
the creation of my work. This would be done by arriving at lessons on time and not missing lessons. If I would
be late or miss lessons this would mean that I would fall behind on my work, meaning that I wouldn’t have as
much time to complete my work. This could result in it becoming rushed and losing quality of work.
A final way that I could keep quality in my work would be by planning out what I am wanting to create and a
plan for my project. This would mean that I would know what I can create and tick off what I have created and
so I can see what I haven’t created. This would mean that I can track what has been completed so I don’t
forget to create an aspect of my story and have to quickly create it losing quality of work.

3. Codes of Practice:
All of the work that I will create will be all my own work with no copying or use of anyone else’s image, they
will all be my own. My work will be inspired by other people work but I will be trying my best not to copy these
pre-created works. I will also have to maintain a good relationship with the publishers of my book. This would
be done by making sure that I meet the deadlines, making sure the book is up to quality and all copyright
issues are covered. I have to also abide by the code of practise on authors contracts to be able to produce my
book without any issues.
Regulation:
The book that I am creating will not also be a pop-up book or toy. This would mean that I would not be
affected by the Toy Safety Directive. I do understand the laws and acts surrounding my book, such as the
Obscene and Equality Acts, and I will be complying with these laws.
Copyright:
I don’t think that there will be many copyright issues as the story being used is a fairy tale and these do not
have any copyright on them. The characters I will be creating will be my own ideas so I do not think that I will
have any issues with copyright on these. However, one issue that I may face is the use of fonts that I use in
my book. This is because I might not have the right licensing to use the fonts that I am including in my project.
Ethical Issues:
I don’t think that my story will have many ethical issues. I will not be creating any racial or gender stereotypes
through the look or roles of my characters in the story. However, one ethical issue that I may have to consider
is about the relationship between violence and an outcome of a story. Due to the end of my story I have to be
careful about teaching children that violence does not solve the issues you have. As children at the age of my
target audience can be impressionable from what they hear and see, I have to show that this is not the only
way to deal with the issues. Another ethical issue that I have is to show that stealing is wrong. I have to do this
by making sure that the hero and victim of the story comes out on top in the end of the story.

4. Resources:
A successful project relies on good planning. Considering all the resources you will need for a project and then assessing which
you already have and which you need will help ensure you are ready to start your project.
If there is a resource you don’t currently have, then consider how you are going to get it before you go in to production.

This is available on the computers that I will be using, so all
would have to do to access this is would be log into the
computer.
Google Images

Google images is a free service on the internet. All I would have
to do would be to go onto the internet and search for any image
on the internet that I would like to use.
A4 Paper
Yes
Paper is easily accessible. This is readily available from any
place. To get this all I would have to do is take this from a printer
or take this from the paper stash in the room.
Pencil and Coloured Pencils
Yes
I already own a couple of pencils so I have easy access to this.
With coloured pencils, they are available in the room where I will
be creating my project.
Microsoft Word Yes
I will already have access to this application on the computers
that I am using. All I would have to do to access these the
application for the work that I want to use.

5. Production Schedule:
Delivering your project on time is vital. In order to do this, you need a solid plan of action. This will help you divide up your work in
to manageable chunks to be tackled one at a time. It will also allow you to plan which tasks need to be done in which order. It will
also allow you to track your progress each day. If you are falling behind, you will need to modify the way you work. If you work
faster than expected, you can clearly see what the next steps you need to take are.
Each session is a half day of college.
Session 1:
In this session, I will be creating and producing work for the first page of my book. I will be creating the
characters for my story as well as the locations such as the natural environment and aesthetics such as
buildings and trees. I will be creating this using the brush and paint tool and also the shape tools. This
will allow me to make the content for my first page in the way and styles that I want them to be.

6. Session 2:
For this session, I will be creating the animals and aesthetics for the second page of my book. I will also
be changing the look of a character that I have pre-made. For the character changes, I will be adjusting
the look on the persons face. I will be changing the positioning of the eyes of the person to fit with the
feelings that they will be feeling. For the creation of the aesthetics and animals for the page I will again
be using the shape and the brush and paint tool. It will allow me to create the look of the look of the page
in the way I want.
Session 3:
This session would be me making 2 different scenes. In this I would be creating the inside of the house
for one of the scene and I would also be recreating one of the pervious scenes to fit in with the page that
I want to create. As well as this I would also be editing the look of pre-made characters to fit in with the
content of the scene. Doing this I would be editing the position of one of my characters from standing to
sitting. I would also be changing the look on the persons faces so they display the emotions that I want
to display on the page.

7. Session 4:
In this I will be creating 2 different scenes to fit in with the look I want for this page. The first one I will be
creating will be an outside scene of a track leading from one location to another. In this I will also be
creating a small village setting to be included at the other end of the scene. I will not have to create any
other characters or aesthetics for this scene as these parts of the scene have already been created and
can be used again. The other scene I will be creating will be the scene of a village centre where I will
have to create new aesthetics and characters.
Session 5:

8. In this session, I will carry on creating the scenes that I have been in the previous session. I will then
move on to carry on creating the scenes for the next page. This will include creating locations such as a
forest, which has already been partially created from other scenes, a river and a hill side. I will be using
pre-created characters and animals in this scene so they don’t have to be created.
Session 6:
In this session, I will be creating a new hill scene and a cave. In here I will be creating the hill scene as
a long shot so you are able to see the people on the hill with the animals and the cave. As well as
creating the scene I will also have to create the giant. The animals and characters that I will be using in
this scene will be pre-created so these won’t have to be created by me, however I will have be editing
the look of them such as where their eyes are looking and also the way they will be standing.

9. Session 7:
In this session, the only thing that I will have to create will be the terrain. The only thing that I will be
creating will be the look of the hills. This will be done using the shape tool and the warp tool to
manipulate the shape into the specific way that I want them to look. The characters and animals being
used in the scene are already pre-created so I do not have to create them, however I will be changing
the look of the them to fit in with what is happening. For example, for one of the parts of the scene I will
be changing of the characters will be changing the positioning of the persons legs and arms in order to
make them look like they are running.
Session 8:
For this section I will be creating a scene using work I have previously created. In this there is a couple
of things that I would have to create as aesthetics for the scene. Things that I would have to create
would be things like a hole in the ground, shovels and ropes. These things are the only thing that I would
have to create. The characters are the only thing that are pre-created that I would have to edit. For
example I would have to adjust the look and actions of the characters to fit in with what I want the scene
to look like.

10. Session 9:
For this scene, all I need to do is to assemble the look of the of the scene as everything that I will be
using has already been pre-created. The aesthetics of the image is the only thing that I need to change.
As the scene will be set at night, I would need to change the colour of the sky from a bright blue of day,
to a darker navy blue of night. This would also mean that I would also need to darken down the
aesthetics of the image for it to fit in with what is happening with the scene. Each character and animal
being used in the scene is already pre-created so I do not have to make these however I do need to
change the look and behaviours of them to fit with content. I will also be creating another scene as well.
For the scene I will be using all work that I have already created so I do not need to make any
characters or aesthetics to include in the scene.

12. Health and safety:
Your health and safety and that of those around you is very important. Just like in industry, an accident could prevent you from
working. Whilst we don’t work in a highly dangerous environment, there are still risks. Some are short term, such as trips and
spillages whilst others, such as long term damage to eyesight or back problems, may affect you much later in life.
Consider the risks based on the activities you will be undertaking during the project. Explain how you could prevent them from
happening.
Ensure you reference appropriate pieces of legislation, design to protect people at work.
Health and Safety Issue How can you prevent it?
Eye strains that can be caused from looking at the screen
for too long.
Form not looking at the computer screen for too long.
This can be done by taking regular breaks from long at
the screen, changing view of field of depth. Other ways to
prevent this is can be found in the Safety at Work Act.
Physical damage that can come from sitting incorrectly
on chairs.
By sitting in an appropriate way to the screen which will
allow you to reduce the chance of physical issues. For
people who have wheelchairs and can’t sit in a normal
chair, there is the chance of use of a height adjustable
table. This will give you the chance sit in an appropriate
way to reduce the risk of physical injury.

13. Trip hazards from bag straps lying on the floor.
This can be done by keeping all bags stowed away
properly under the table to make sure no one falls over
them.
Spilling drink such as water, fizzy drinks and hot drinks
onto computers or electrical equipment.
This can be prevented by not drinking fizzy or hot drinks
near computers and if water is being drunk near the
computers or electrical equipment make sure it’s in a
container that can be sealed so none of the drink can be
spilt all over the equipment.
