1. Digital Graphic Narrative Planning
Use this booklet to help structure your planning and collate your planning documents.
Considerations:
There are lots of things to consider in this project. Fill out each section in detail to show you have thought about each one. You
should imagine that this is a live project, so considerations like cost, quantity and codes of practice must be thought about in that
context rather than just as a college project.
Costs:
The costs of this whole production will be cost effective and will not cost anything due to the limited amount of
resources that I will need in order to get the production completed. Because I will be only using free
equipment that I can easily access means that this whole step is a big plus towards the production.
Available resources:
The resources that we have available are mainly the computers themselves, as they are Macs so will be very
useful to spend the time on in order to create the whole project. As well as this there is also the software that I
will be using (Photoshop) which will allow me to develop the ideas into a physical presence and make it look
exactly how I would like it to. Smaller resources I will still use are websites such as google.com and
dafont.com. These will help with the inspiration images and will help set a base for the production as it will get
me things that I can base my work off and also use within the production.
2. Quantity:
I feel that the book will behave a fair amount for quality so not making the book impossible for people to get
and will range the quantity of sales at about 2000 books. This will allow for people to see it in selected
bookstores and get familiar with what the story is about.
Audience and Target Market:
The audience that I will aim this book towards will be mainly for the 3-5 year old margin. This I feel will be best
as the book doesn’t have a complex storyline and is quite a light hearted tale with a happy ever after sort of
ending. So I feel it will appeal to this sort of audience best for those reasons. As well as this it may also be a
good read for the parents to enjoy as it may show visual representation to their lives with the two very normal
characters.
Quality Factors:
The quality factors that may affect the level of production may include things like the level of skill and technical
ability when using Photoshop in order to make all the objects and characters to a great standard. Another
factor could be time and that because we only have a limited amount of time in order to complete the work (2
weeks) then that will affect the amount of detail I can put into the production and will prevent me from adding
in little bits of extra detail just to make the whole book look a little bit better.
Codes of Practice:
7A Time; I will try to ensure the date that is set from the publisher will be met and will make sure there is no
reason for the publisher to withhold payment, which is completely within their right to do so if there is no work
submitted by that time.
7B standards and quality: Going from the talk of payment a publisher could also withhold payment If the
quality of the work is not up to a specific standard. This again is completely within their rights and that makes
more pressure put upon the developer to make a very up to standard product that makes the publisher happy.
3. Regulation:
In terms of regulation none of this can be set at my book as there is no pop up features or anything that can
be considered a hazard to anyone especially children. This being said I’d there was anything within my book I
would make sure it was big enough to not be considered a danger also making sure that the parts were not
easy to remove from the book, which will ensure the maximum safety for children in particular.
Copyright:
Throughout the making of this book I will ensure not to have used any properties that have been copyrighted,
even the story itself has been deemed out of copyright as the owner of the piece has been gone long enough
for it to be open to copying.
Ethical Issues:
With the ethical issues I have no intention in misrepresenting anything let alone a race or and ethnicity. Within
the story there will be major checks to make sure this doesn’t happen I will make sure that all character are on
equal ground and that no one is on a higher ground than any other. These characters will all be rotoscoped
(same art style) in order to ensure this to the maximum level.
4. Resources:
A successful project relies on good planning. Considering all the resources you will need for a project and then assessing which
you already have and which you need will help ensure you are ready to start your project.
If there is a resource you don’t currently have, then consider how you are going to get it before you go in to production.

Computer (with Photoshop installed) Yes I will get this by can just use the computer provided by the
college in order to get the work done.
Script Yes This work has already been done previously, so in order to get
this I will just have to access a computer.
Google Yes Same as above in that it is free to access if you have a
computer.
Dafont.com Yes This is also just accessed by using a computer.
Flat plans Yes The flat plans are the same the script in that they have also
already been done and can be easily accessed when using a
computer.
Production Schedule:
Delivering your project on time is vital. In order to do this, you need a solid plan of action. This will help you divide up your work in
to manageable chunks to be tackled one at a time. It will also allow you to plan which tasks need to be done in which order. It will
also allow you to track your progress each day. If you are falling behind, you will need to modify the way you work. If you work
faster than expected, you can clearly see what the next steps you need to take are.
5. Each session is a half day of college.
Session 1:
Start by getting the images from Google that I will take as a guide to making my production and then
make a start on the backgrounds for the production, so include making the whole settings for the office
and the home area. These will be the best place to start I feel as they will be the main basis to build
upon, so after I could just add in the characters and the text. So in order to complete these I will need to
use the computer, Photoshop and Google.
This will include making all of the separate parts for the environments using shapes, so I will have to
construct a table and chair for the office as well as adding in more realistic features for an office such as
a bin and a few pictures/awards. I will also try to construct a computer on top of the desk to make the
office look more authentic as well.
So for this slot I will just try to finish making the whole background for the office and if there is a little bit
of time I will try to add in some more little details to try and get it to as good of a standard as possible.
Session 2:
In this session I will finish off the office (if it is not already completed) and move on to the cityscape
background. This will require having more time on the computer and will use the script again in order to
keep track of what text is going to combine with which background in order to make a complete page.
In order to complete the city scape (which will be used as the first page. This will be set as the main
start to the story so will introduce the setting and will then get the attention of the reader so that they will
carry on and find out what happens.
6. Session 3:
On this session I will make a start with the living room setting and I feel like because of the level of
difficulty with the certain aspects within the living room such as the sofa will cause it to take some more
time than the other backgrounds as using shapes to create it will cause taking a lot more time in order to
warp and change the shapes to make it just look right.
In order to complete this one I will use equipment such as the computer, Photoshop, Google and the flat
plans in order to get the overall look right and of coursed so that I can actually develop the plans
digitally. In doing this whole thing I will make sure that the 2 previous covers backgrounds are fully
completed before I start on this one.
However to complete the living room form this I will have to make the sofa, all the shelves and the
stairs. Then with all the walls and other decorations in the room should come together in order to make a
good looking living room setting.
Session 4:
This slot is to make sure that the all the backgrounds are completed to a good standard that I am happy
with so finishing the living room setting and the cityscape as well as the office environment. In doing this
I will need to keep using the computers and Photoshop to ensure that I can continue with the work that is
done.
Session 5:
For this I will start to create the characters so will create the male character 3 different times as he
needs to be in different positions for the different places that he is in. So will need to create a standing
up one, a sitting down one and lastly one that its sitting down but at an angle from the left hand side.. In
doing this it will start to bring in the background and making it look like they actually move around and
interact with each other, therefore telling the story. And again I will need the computer as well as an
image from Google in order to complete these steps.
Session 6:
7. In this session I will create the female character and will have to make her is as well 3 different
positions, so will make her sat down with a left side view on her, one where she is standing and lastly
one where she is pointing at him, these will then be used across the whole of the book for her parts in
the book. Also if there is time within this section I will start to create the image of the fairy, who I feel
should not take up too much time as I only need to create her once.
Session 7:
In this session I will get on and finish the fairy, so will make sure that she is to a good standard and
completely finished. Then I will start to put together all of the images that I have created, so combining
all the characters with the backgrounds and make all the pages form together. So after the completion of
the fairy I will then make a start in putting the two together and feel like this will be around 2-3 of the
pages could be finished within this session.
Session 8:
As for this section I will then finishing off this whole process by completing the last pages, so will add in
the characters on the remaining pages. This will be a simple process and will then only leave me with
the text to add into the pages.
Session 9:
For this session I will just finish off the pages, so will add in all of the text that will need to be included
into the pages so will spend this whole session just filling in the selected areas I have left space for in
the backgrounds.
Session 10:
In this one I will just go back and check all of the pages are completed and then improve upon them If I
feel that there are any areas that will need to be improved. So basically fixing anything that could be
slightly wrong about the work and try to make sure it is at a suitable standard
8. Health and safety:
Your health and safety and that of those around you is very important. Just like in industry, an accident could prevent you from
working. Whilst we don’t work in a highly dangerous environment, there are still risks. Some are short term, such as trips and
spillages whilst others, such as long term damage to eyesight or back problems, may affect you much later in life.
Consider the risks based on the activities you will be undertaking during the project. Explain how you could prevent them from
happening.
Ensure you reference appropriate pieces of legislation, design to protect people at work.
Health and Safety Issue How can you prevent it?
Eyestrain, which is one of the biggest hazards present as
looking at the computer monitor for too long can cause
this.
By taking regular breaks every hour. This will maintain a
level of concentration throughout the work and will allow
the eyes to get different ranges of focus throughout the
breaks.
Wires that have been left out might case people to trip.
Making sure that there is some sort of material around the
wires (such as tope) so that they are together and will not
make any sort of hazard that will allow people to cause
harm to themselves.
