Digital Graphic Narrative Planning
Use this booklet to help structure your planning and collate your planning documents.
Considerations:
There are lots of things to consider in this project. Fill out each section in detail to show you have thought about each one. You
should imagine that this is a live project, so considerations like cost, quantity and codes of practice must be thought about in that
context rather than just as a college project.
Costs: The cost of this book wont be anything due to the fact that I am using software that is already
provided for me, and I am not using any extra materials within my work such as a camera, paper, pens e.c.t I
am doing my work 100% digitally therefore making the product practically free to create.
Available resources: Adobe Photoshop, Dafont and Google images. I will be using Photoshop to create my
work , Google to find reference images for positions and posing within my characters and using Dafont to find
different font types that I could use within my book.
Quantity: With this book I would like it to be able to reach a large target audience with perhaps the printing
amount being in the 1000’s. This is mainly because I am making a children’s book so I would like to reach a
larger audience, this is due to the fact that children’s books are increasingly popular. And due to these books
normally being short parents are always looking for new books to read to their children or for their children to
read by themselves. This is why I am hoping to have a large quantity of books so that a larger amount of
people would be able to have themselves a new book to read.
Audience and Target Market:
To being with the targeted group for my book will be boys between the ages of 6-10 as well they should
belong to the working class and up. The reason that I have chose to have this age range and gender as my
target group is because I believe that this story will mostly appeal to males. This is due to the fact that the
book will contain a wolf and that most of the characters in this book will also be male so boys prefer this if they
found out that a large amount of characters are male within the book. As well the reason that I have chosen
this age range to target is because this is the type of age where they need this type of message to be
delivered to them in another way just than being told by their own parents not to lie. As well I have chosen this
age range because this is around the age of the boy in the book so people in this age range may also be able
to relate to them in this story. As well because of the age of the children that I have targeted they will be more
easily able to understand the ending of the book and what had happened and why. As well the main location
that I am aiming my target audience in main places such as the countryside, or in small villages. The reason
that I have chosen this area as my main place for my target audience to live is due to the nature of the story
and the set location of it. It is also a good message for people who live in that sort of area not to lie about
things such as this happening; and they know the possible results of it if they choose to lie. How I am mainly
going to reach my intended audience is by using a darker colour pallet for my book, using mostly earthy
colours and not bright colours that boys may view as being “Too girly” for their own liking within the book. As
well I am going to make my characters very boy-ish within the book, with the main character and other
villagers looking very boy like and manly. With things such as sort hair, scruffy appearance e.c.t to make it
seem more interesting to the boys and to also make the characters stand out. I am also planning on making
the wolf slightly creepy to catch the attention of the boys as this is the type of things that they would be
interested in seeing within books.
Quality Factors:
To make sure that my book comes out as a good quality piece of work there are several things that I am going
to do to make sure that I achieve that. To being with I am going to stick to my schedule and manage my time
well to make sure that I get all of my work done at the correct time and that I also meet my set deadline for the
work. I will also make sure that each piece of work is all worked on for an equal amount of time instead of
doing something such as spending a week on two pages and a day on the rest. As this would produce low
quality work. I will also be getting feedback from others to get their opinion on my work and to give
suggestions on what I could do to improve my work. I will remain well focused while I am working and not go
off topic and do something that isn’t to do with my work. So I will remain well focused to get my work
completed and to ensure that it isn’t rushed.
Codes of Practice: The time scale for delivery of the manuscript and the time scale for publication (which
may need to be held over for market reasons); Here this shows that within creating my book I need to be
accurate and good with my time. Making sure that I get my work completed and handed in by the set deadline
for the work.
The responsibility for preparing the supporting materials (e.g. indexes, illustrations, content for accompanying
websites or other ancillary material etc.), and for obtaining permissions and paying for the supporting
materials in which third parties hold the copyright. Here this clearly shows that I must be able to easily source
and find my own extra material if it are to be used within the book. As well as gaining permission from the
owner of the work if the created work is copy righted.
Regulation: The book that I am creating does not fall under the regulation of a children’s book being a toy.
This is because the book that I am creating is not interactive and doesn’t contain things such as small parts,
which could perhaps be a hazard to younger children.
As well my book does fall under an Obscene category as in some endings of the book the boy and the sheep
were both killed by the wolf. However because this ending is not appropriate for the wolf had scared off a
children’s book I am using the ending where the boy is still alive and the sheep; have been scared off by the
wolf. This way the book becomes child friendly and more appropriate for my target audience.
Copyright: My book doesn’t fall under any issues with copy right, this is because the story that I am using
was created in 1687. Which means that the author of the book will be dead, which means that we are free to
use their work for free. As well everything else that I am using is copyright free which means that everything I
am going to use in my book wont effect anything such as the price of creating the book, or crediting in the
work. I am also using standard fonts in my book, so none of these fall under copy right laws, unlike on Dafont
where some of the fonts are only free for personal use. But due to this being commercial use it means that I
wouldn’t be able to use them types of text without having to pay the creator of the font type.
Ethical Issues: Within my book I do not come across any Ethical issues, All the characters un my book are
based in England. However none of my characters within the book are fitting into stereotypes and are all
individual characters. And within my book there is nothing that convinces to reader to start hating something
or to be against a group of people for how they are. My book is cultural sensitive and doesn’t have anything
offensive to a race or group of people within it. As well my book is appropriate for all people, as it doesn’t have
anything in it against ethnicity, race, culture e.c.t It is also a suitable story for children to be able to go and
read, along side with whomever they wish to.
Resources:
A successful project relies on good planning. Considering all the resources you will need for a project and then assessing which
you already have and which you need will help ensure you are ready to start your project.
If there is a resource you don’t currently have, then consider how you are going to get it before you go in to production.

To get it I am going to have to go and try and find an image like
what I want online on something such as Google image or
search on websites. Whilst doing so I will also have to make
sure that the image I find is not copy righted to avoided any
issues with use of this image in my final product.
Production Schedule:
Delivering your project on time is vital. In order to do this, you need a solid plan of action. This will help you divide up your work in
to manageable chunks to be tackled one at a time. It will also allow you to plan which tasks need to be done in which order. It will
also allow you to track your progress each day. If you are falling behind, you will need to modify the way you work. If you work
faster than expected, you can clearly see what the next steps you need to take are.
Each session is a half-day of college.
Session 1:
Finish creating character models (Main character, villagers, wolf and sheep)
Start to create backgrounds. (Field, village, field close-up and village close-up)
Create characters in different poses. (E.g facing front, sideways and have different body parts posed
differently such as the arms.)
Begin making page 1 (Add in the background and needed characters)
Session 2:
Finish creating page 1 (position the characters and add in extra detail)
Begin to make page 2 (Begin to create the outline for the zoom in of Jack shouting)
Finish creating Jack and position the arms correctly.
Add in the background to page 2 and add shadow around the character (page 2 finished)
Session 3:
Begin to create page 3 (Add in background and position the villagers walking)
Create the villagers walking positions and add in extra detail such as grass and shadow (page 3
finished)
Session 4:
Finish page 4 (The test page) add in the edited characters and change some of the positioning.
Change Jacks position on page 4 and add in extra detail such as the grass and shading. (Page 4
finished)
Start page 5 (Add in the background)
Change villagers positions and facial expressions
Session 5:
Change the main villagers position (Page 5 finished)
Start to create page 6 Begin creating the wolf.
Create the background for the wolf and position the wolf at the correct angle.
Add in extra detail such as wolfs eye and some shading on the wolf. (Page 6 finished)
Session 6:
Begin to create page 7 (Add in the background and angle it correctly)
Create the village houses and the clipping masks for the house textures. Add text going across the
village
Add in the villagers and position them correctly (Page 7 finished)
Start page 8 Create close up of the houses in the background and add in the sky.
Session 7:
Create close up of the talking villagers
Change villagers facial expressions and poses (page 8 finished)
Begin to create page 9 (the other half of the village add in hill, path and fence)
Position crowd of villagers ready to go out searching.
Session 8:
Add in extra detail such as shading e.c.t (page 9 finished)
Start page 10 Add in the background (zoomed in area on the hill with the tree)
Session 9:
Create crying Jack and position him against the tree.
Create villagers looking over at him and add in extra detail such as shadow (page 10 finished)
Add in the background on page 11
Create the villager comforting Jack and Create crying jack. (Page 11 finished)
Session 10:
Create text from pages 1-11
Add the text onto each page.
Add in any extra details needed (such as more characters, shading e.c.t)
Finish booklet and export it.
Health and safety:
Your health and safety and that of those around you is very important. Just like in industry, an accident could prevent you from
working. Whilst we don’t work in a highly dangerous environment, there are still risks. Some are short term, such as trips and
spillages whilst others, such as long term damage to eyesight or back problems, may affect you much later in life.
Consider the risks based on the activities you will be undertaking during the project. Explain how you could prevent them from
happening.
Ensure you reference appropriate pieces of legislation, design to protect people at work.
Health and Safety Issue How can you prevent it?
Tripping over chairs & bags.
Make sure that all chairs and bags are tucked underneath
the table when getting up or when going to walk around
the room/leave.
Spilling drinks over the computer.
Make sure that all drinks are in a bottle and the bottle has
a lid on it that is being fastened at all times when it is not
being drank.
Hurting your back while sat at the computer.
Make sure that you are sitting in the correct position while
sat at the computer working.
Straining eyes while using the computer.
Make sure that you take a 5 minuet breaks every hour
when you are not staring at a screen to make sure that
your eyes get a rest from it.
Tripping over lose wires.
Make sure all wires are neatly tucked behind something
out of the way or make sure that they are flat on the floor
and not suspended in the air.

Planning booklet

  • 1. Digital Graphic Narrative Planning Use this booklet to help structure your planning and collate your planning documents. Considerations: There are lots of things to consider in this project. Fill out each section in detail to show you have thought about each one. You should imagine that this is a live project, so considerations like cost, quantity and codes of practice must be thought about in that context rather than just as a college project. Costs: The cost of this book wont be anything due to the fact that I am using software that is already provided for me, and I am not using any extra materials within my work such as a camera, paper, pens e.c.t I am doing my work 100% digitally therefore making the product practically free to create. Available resources: Adobe Photoshop, Dafont and Google images. I will be using Photoshop to create my work , Google to find reference images for positions and posing within my characters and using Dafont to find different font types that I could use within my book.
  • 2. Quantity: With this book I would like it to be able to reach a large target audience with perhaps the printing amount being in the 1000’s. This is mainly because I am making a children’s book so I would like to reach a larger audience, this is due to the fact that children’s books are increasingly popular. And due to these books normally being short parents are always looking for new books to read to their children or for their children to read by themselves. This is why I am hoping to have a large quantity of books so that a larger amount of people would be able to have themselves a new book to read. Audience and Target Market: To being with the targeted group for my book will be boys between the ages of 6-10 as well they should belong to the working class and up. The reason that I have chose to have this age range and gender as my target group is because I believe that this story will mostly appeal to males. This is due to the fact that the book will contain a wolf and that most of the characters in this book will also be male so boys prefer this if they found out that a large amount of characters are male within the book. As well the reason that I have chosen this age range to target is because this is the type of age where they need this type of message to be delivered to them in another way just than being told by their own parents not to lie. As well I have chosen this age range because this is around the age of the boy in the book so people in this age range may also be able to relate to them in this story. As well because of the age of the children that I have targeted they will be more easily able to understand the ending of the book and what had happened and why. As well the main location that I am aiming my target audience in main places such as the countryside, or in small villages. The reason that I have chosen this area as my main place for my target audience to live is due to the nature of the story and the set location of it. It is also a good message for people who live in that sort of area not to lie about things such as this happening; and they know the possible results of it if they choose to lie. How I am mainly going to reach my intended audience is by using a darker colour pallet for my book, using mostly earthy colours and not bright colours that boys may view as being “Too girly” for their own liking within the book. As well I am going to make my characters very boy-ish within the book, with the main character and other villagers looking very boy like and manly. With things such as sort hair, scruffy appearance e.c.t to make it seem more interesting to the boys and to also make the characters stand out. I am also planning on making the wolf slightly creepy to catch the attention of the boys as this is the type of things that they would be interested in seeing within books.
  • 3. Quality Factors: To make sure that my book comes out as a good quality piece of work there are several things that I am going to do to make sure that I achieve that. To being with I am going to stick to my schedule and manage my time well to make sure that I get all of my work done at the correct time and that I also meet my set deadline for the work. I will also make sure that each piece of work is all worked on for an equal amount of time instead of doing something such as spending a week on two pages and a day on the rest. As this would produce low quality work. I will also be getting feedback from others to get their opinion on my work and to give suggestions on what I could do to improve my work. I will remain well focused while I am working and not go off topic and do something that isn’t to do with my work. So I will remain well focused to get my work completed and to ensure that it isn’t rushed. Codes of Practice: The time scale for delivery of the manuscript and the time scale for publication (which may need to be held over for market reasons); Here this shows that within creating my book I need to be accurate and good with my time. Making sure that I get my work completed and handed in by the set deadline for the work. The responsibility for preparing the supporting materials (e.g. indexes, illustrations, content for accompanying websites or other ancillary material etc.), and for obtaining permissions and paying for the supporting materials in which third parties hold the copyright. Here this clearly shows that I must be able to easily source and find my own extra material if it are to be used within the book. As well as gaining permission from the owner of the work if the created work is copy righted. Regulation: The book that I am creating does not fall under the regulation of a children’s book being a toy. This is because the book that I am creating is not interactive and doesn’t contain things such as small parts, which could perhaps be a hazard to younger children. As well my book does fall under an Obscene category as in some endings of the book the boy and the sheep were both killed by the wolf. However because this ending is not appropriate for the wolf had scared off a children’s book I am using the ending where the boy is still alive and the sheep; have been scared off by the wolf. This way the book becomes child friendly and more appropriate for my target audience.
  • 4. Copyright: My book doesn’t fall under any issues with copy right, this is because the story that I am using was created in 1687. Which means that the author of the book will be dead, which means that we are free to use their work for free. As well everything else that I am using is copyright free which means that everything I am going to use in my book wont effect anything such as the price of creating the book, or crediting in the work. I am also using standard fonts in my book, so none of these fall under copy right laws, unlike on Dafont where some of the fonts are only free for personal use. But due to this being commercial use it means that I wouldn’t be able to use them types of text without having to pay the creator of the font type. Ethical Issues: Within my book I do not come across any Ethical issues, All the characters un my book are based in England. However none of my characters within the book are fitting into stereotypes and are all individual characters. And within my book there is nothing that convinces to reader to start hating something or to be against a group of people for how they are. My book is cultural sensitive and doesn’t have anything offensive to a race or group of people within it. As well my book is appropriate for all people, as it doesn’t have anything in it against ethnicity, race, culture e.c.t It is also a suitable story for children to be able to go and read, along side with whomever they wish to. Resources: A successful project relies on good planning. Considering all the resources you will need for a project and then assessing which you already have and which you need will help ensure you are ready to start your project. If there is a resource you don’t currently have, then consider how you are going to get it before you go in to production. Resource: Do you have What do you need to do to get it?

Whilst doing so I will also have to make sure that the image I find is not copy righted to avoided any issues with use of this image in my final product. Production Schedule: Delivering your project on time is vital. In order to do this, you need a solid plan of action. This will help you divide up your work in to manageable chunks to be tackled one at a time. It will also allow you to plan which tasks need to be done in which order. It will
  • 6. also allow you to track your progress each day. If you are falling behind, you will need to modify the way you work. If you work faster than expected, you can clearly see what the next steps you need to take are. Each session is a half-day of college. Session 1: Finish creating character models (Main character, villagers, wolf and sheep) Start to create backgrounds. (Field, village, field close-up and village close-up) Create characters in different poses. (E.g facing front, sideways and have different body parts posed differently such as the arms.) Begin making page 1 (Add in the background and needed characters) Session 2: Finish creating page 1 (position the characters and add in extra detail) Begin to make page 2 (Begin to create the outline for the zoom in of Jack shouting)
  • 7. Finish creating Jack and position the arms correctly. Add in the background to page 2 and add shadow around the character (page 2 finished) Session 3: Begin to create page 3 (Add in background and position the villagers walking) Create the villagers walking positions and add in extra detail such as grass and shadow (page 3 finished) Session 4: Finish page 4 (The test page) add in the edited characters and change some of the positioning. Change Jacks position on page 4 and add in extra detail such as the grass and shading. (Page 4 finished) Start page 5 (Add in the background) Change villagers positions and facial expressions
  • 8. Session 5: Change the main villagers position (Page 5 finished) Start to create page 6 Begin creating the wolf. Create the background for the wolf and position the wolf at the correct angle. Add in extra detail such as wolfs eye and some shading on the wolf. (Page 6 finished) Session 6: Begin to create page 7 (Add in the background and angle it correctly) Create the village houses and the clipping masks for the house textures. Add text going across the village Add in the villagers and position them correctly (Page 7 finished) Start page 8 Create close up of the houses in the background and add in the sky.

Session 7: Create close up of the talking villagers Change villagers facial expressions and poses (page 8 finished) Begin to create page 9 (the other half of the village add in hill, path and fence) Position crowd of villagers ready to go out searching. Session 8: Add in extra detail such as shading e.c.t (page 9 finished) Start page 10 Add in the background (zoomed in area on the hill with the tree) Session 9: Create crying Jack and position him against the tree.
  • 10. Create villagers looking over at him and add in extra detail such as shadow (page 10 finished) Add in the background on page 11 Create the villager comforting Jack and Create crying jack. (Page 11 finished) Session 10: Create text from pages 1-11 Add the text onto each page. Add in any extra details needed (such as more characters, shading e.c.t) Finish booklet and export it.
  • 11. Health and safety: Your health and safety and that of those around you is very important. Just like in industry, an accident could prevent you from working. Whilst we don’t work in a highly dangerous environment, there are still risks. Some are short term, such as trips and spillages whilst others, such as long term damage to eyesight or back problems, may affect you much later in life. Consider the risks based on the activities you will be undertaking during the project. Explain how you could prevent them from happening. Ensure you reference appropriate pieces of legislation, design to protect people at work. Health and Safety Issue How can you prevent it?
  • 12. Tripping over chairs & bags. Make sure that all chairs and bags are tucked underneath the table when getting up or when going to walk around the room/leave. Spilling drinks over the computer. Make sure that all drinks are in a bottle and the bottle has a lid on it that is being fastened at all times when it is not being drank. Hurting your back while sat at the computer. Make sure that you are sitting in the correct position while sat at the computer working. Straining eyes while using the computer. Make sure that you take a 5 minuet breaks every hour when you are not staring at a screen to make sure that your eyes get a rest from it. Tripping over lose wires. Make sure all wires are neatly tucked behind something out of the way or make sure that they are flat on the floor and not suspended in the air.
