Does your final product reflect your
original intentions?
• Compare your planning/digital flat plans/ storyboards to your final
product
• I think that my final product does in a way reflect my
intentions from the start of the project. Looking at my original
storyboards I think that the plans that I have drawn out look
similar to what I have as my final product. The positioning of
the characters and aesthetics I feel are similar to what I have
ended up with in my final product. The only reason why these
may have changed is due to different aesthetics being added
into the scene as well as the original ones. I developed these
into my digital flat plans that were a more detailed version of
my storyboard. I feel that this looks a closer to my final
product. The positioning in these are a lot closer as I have
then made the changes to the aesthetics and the look of the
images overall.
This can be seen in the 2 images above. Looking at these
we can see that they are a close representation. You can
see that the objects used are the same with a few added
features and textures. Overall I feel that my digital flat
plans and storyboards do reflect my original intentions
and that the changes I have made are not major and still
make them representative to my intentions.
I also think that my character ideas do reflect my original
intentions. I set out for these to be simple, easy to
understand characters with no complicated aspects to
them and this suits the audience that I am targeting. I
also intended them to look medieval as this is where the
time setting of my story is set.
How well have you constructed your
images?
• How well have you constructed your images? You could talk about
the overall visual appearance and well as the use of texture and
colour.
• I think that I have constructed my images quite well. I feel that I
have made them to the best of my ability. I have done this through
the use of the shape tool along with other tools. I think the overall
look of my images at the start looked quite basic as I just used block
colours such as green for the grass, blue for the sky and brown for
the trees. I then to this added the textures. After adding the
textures however, I feel that my images look a lot more detailed,
realistic and pleasing to the eye. Once it was transformed into this
more detailed form the images looked a lot better and looked
better than it did with just previous block colours.
• How well have you constructed your images? You could talk about
the overall visual appearance and well as the use of texture and
colour.
• However one thing that I feel I could have done to improve the look
of my images is the use of colour in the sky background. I feel that
even though these do look realistic I feel that I could have used the
colours more effectively to make the representation look better.
• Another thing I thing I could have improved is some of the textures
that I have used. I feel that some of these were not quite as
accurate as I would have liked them to be as they didn’t represent
the ideas that I originally had. I would have improved this by looking
at different textures and taking my time more while looking at
these.
How well have you used text to anchor
your images
• You should talk about the combination of words,
images and text.
• I think that I have used my text well to anchor my
images. I have done this by making sure the text
that I have used creates meaning along with the
illustrations of my story. On some on the pages I
have included less text than other ones. This is
done to support what is happening on the pages
and some of them do need more text than others
as the amount of words is dependant on the
need for description.
For example the 2 images bellow illustrate
the way that I have used the different
amount of text to help illustrate what is
being seen in the pages. In the 1st image
there is a minimal amount of text used. This
is due to the fact that text is needed to
explain what is happening not a lot of text is
needed in on this page. The text used in this
still creates understanding and a
relationship with the images from the page.
However in the second image we can see
that more text is used but the relationship
between it and the images are still the same
as other images with less text.
Is your product suitable for your
audience?
• Reference your proposal
• Give an audience profile and describe suitability in reference to content
• The profile of my audience is shown in the picture bellow.
• I feel that the product that I have created is suitable for the audience that I am targeting. The reason for this is that I feel that
the content I have made for my book is appropriate. The content doesn’t include any prejudices, violence or bad language
that may mean that the story wouldn’t fit the 3-6 year old target audience I have set. I also think that it fits in with the class
specification that I have set.
• I have had to be very careful in terms of keeping violence out of the story. I had to adapt the end of the story due to the end
of the original story being where the main character kills the giant. To make sure that it was suitable for the ages 3-6 years
old, I had to remove this ending and change it as kids of this age are quite impressionable and violence can not be
represented in a children's story book.
• With the bad language in my story I was being very cautious to make sure that non of this was in there as this would
absolutely be inappropriate for my target audience. I did this by doing an overall check within the story to see if any bad
language was used but as this was not the case I didn’t have to do any censorship myself.
• With the prejudices I made sure that there is no cultural, age or gender discrimination in my story. I have done this by
making sure that I have included all different characters in my story. I have done this in order to cause no influence in terms
of beliefs towards the consumer.
• Finally I feel that the story that I have created fits in well with the class specification that I have said in my audience profile. I
have done this by barely changing any part of the story, keeping it as traditional as possible.
What do you like/dislike about the
techniques you have used?
• Reference specific tools you used with images
• The main tools that I used in the production of my story are the shape tool and this was
backed up by the warp tool. I also used textures and the brush tool to add effects to the
look of my final work. What I like about the tools that I used is that they are all simple
and easy to use. With the shape tool it I was able to create and design the aesthetics
that I wanted to with no great difficulty at all. With the use of the warp tool I was able
to manipulate the shapes into different looks to suit the environment that I want them
to fit into.
• Another things that I like about the tools that I used are that they allowed me to create
a realistic look for my project. Adding textures allowed me to give the visuals a realistic
look to my work and I feel this added to the overall finished product. The same thing
has come from the brush tool. When using this I used an option in the tool that was a
grass effect. This allowed me to add grass effects around the bottom of trees, adding to
the visual aspects.
• A final thing I like about using these tools is that if you are inexperience with using
these, they are not hard to figure out how to use. Once you start using them more
often you become more confident and then they become easy tools to use.
• What I dislike about the techniques I used is that my skills with them
weren't as developed I would have like them to be. I would have liked to
have been able to have gained more experience with the tools before I
was to use them.
• Another thing that I dislike about the tools that I used is that I didn’t
always have the ability to get the exact shapes that I wanted. The warp
tool allowed me to be able to manipulate the shapes in a way that I
wanted however I was still not able to get the shapes I had wanted to as
ever this is still restricted to a certain extent. I feel that if I had used
another technique like rotoscoping I would have been able to achieve
this.
• A final thing that I dislike about the tools that I used is that I was restricted
with the shapes that I could use in order to create the my content. The
shapes that I had were the basic polygonal, ellipses, rectangle shapes and
also a few more pre-made shapes. These allowed me to create the things
that I did want but did limit me to only these basic shapes. If I had used a
different technique I would have been able to create more advanced
aesthetics.
What do you like/dislike about how
your final product looks?
• What I like about my final product is how it has turned out. I am happy with how the
entire product has turned out. I think that the way that my product looks is basic but also
is intriguing and can keep the interest of the audience. This would allow it to be easy for
the target audience to understand and be interested in the story.
• Another thing that I like about my final products is that it looks realistic and this is due to
the way that I have used the textures. I feel that the use of textures in my work adds to
the overall appearance of the aesthetics in the images. I feel that this is the best option in
my work as adding this gives a basic look image, a more in depth a quality look about the
overall finished product.
• A final thing that I like about the look of my final product is that I feel that I have used the
tools to my disposal. The reason for this is that one of the tools I used added a lot of
detail and gave me added realistic look to my work. The tool was the paint brush with a
grass attachment. This allowed me to added pieces of grass to the bottom of things like
trees. This added to the overall appearance of the final product increasing the realism of
the images.
• What I dislike about my final
product is that the characters I have
made don’t look as realistic as I
would have liked. I feel that even
though they do symbolise people I
do not believe they do this in a
realistic way.
• Another thing that I dislike about
my final product is that the text in
the image is often hard to read. This
is due to the colour of text being a
dark colour on a light or dark
background making the overall text
hard to read a times. A way that I
would change this to make it much
easier to read would be by adding
either an outer glow or stroke to
the text. This would add colour to
the outside of text highlighting it
making it easier to read.
Why did you include the content you
used?
• In my product I have used different textures, colour pallets, effects and font.
• The first thing I used is the different colour pallets. The reason why I used the
colour pallets that I have are because they are simple. This is due to the audience
that I am targeting being young and using simple colour pallets will make it easy to
look at and not too complicated for them to understand. I also used this colour
pallet because I wanted the colours to be traditional.
• The second thing I used is the font for text. I have used the same font, Myriad Pro,
throughout my product. The reason for using this font specifically is that it is easy
to read as it is in block capitals and is not too small. I did this so it was readable to
all ages as I don’t want to make the text too small for older people to read. I also
chose to make it this size as I didn’t want to make the text fill up to much of the
page and obstruct the rest of the image.
• The third thing I used is the use of effect. The reason why I
used the effects that I have is because I feel it adds to the
overall finished product. The effects that I have used are
strokes and effects through the brush tool. I used the strokes
to be show boundaries between certain areas. For example I
have used this is the windows and door on the house that I
have made it indicate the separations of the different areas.
The other effect that I used comes from the brush tool. I have
used the grass effect brush to add looks to the trees in my
images. This has been used as a leaf effect to give it a realistic
look as this what I have strived for in my final product.
• The final thing I used is textures. The reason why I used the
textures is that I wanted to make my final product look really
realistic and I felt this was the best way to do it. The
different textures represent and give realism to each aesthetic
that I have used in on. The reason behind me using different
textures is that specific areas needed individual textures to be
able to make them look realistic. For example if I was to use a
bark texture on grass this would not look as realistic as I would
want it to be.
What signs, symbols or codes have
your used in your work?
• Choices of colour, style, locations, character design and tone all give
additional meaning to your work.
• One of the meanings that is represented in my work by my work is
through buildings designs. These building designs and architecture suggest
that this is set in a European country. This is also suggested by the
religious symbol of Christianity which is in the form of a church. This is due
to the majority of countries within Europe being Christian based.
• The colours that I have used in my work do create symbolism. This
symbolism is for the main characters as the colours they are wearing do
have meanings. The first main character, Jack’s father, is wearing a white
shirt. The colour white indicates purity. This means that the character can
be trusted and is honest to other people. The other main character, Jack,
is wearing a brown shirt. Brown has the connotations of reliable and
honesty. This gives the feeling that the character can be trusted by the
viewer and also the characters in the story. This is also a vital part of the
story as Jack, the main character, has to be trusted by his father and the
rest of the characters when he says all their cows have been stolen and
need help find it.
What representations can be found in
your work?
• How are men, women or children shown in your work?
Does your work feature different ages, races, social
groups or religions? Does a lack of any variety of
character types create its own representation?
• I think that men, women and children are all
represented in my final piece of work. I have tried to
do this by making sure that each gender is represented
in the scenes that I have created involving my
characters. Despite this just one female character does
feature in my story. I do not think that this has any
negative connotations as the time that the story is set
is in a time where male dominated society.
• I do not think that a lack of variety of characters in
race, religion, or gender creates it own
representations. The reason for this is due to the
times that my story is set. My story is set in the
medieval times and during these times there was
not a whole lot of diversity. There was not a lot of
immigration between countries in these times and it
was also a patriarchal society. As I have wanted to
keep the story as traditional as possible, I have kept
these social areas as they were during the times of
origin for the story.
• In my work I have featured people of different ages and people of religion. The
reason why I have included different ages is that this is one of the main points of
my story. It is about a father and a son who live on a farm and who's lives are being
ruined by their animals being stolen. This means that the inclusion of different ages
is important to my story. The reason for including people of religion is to show
diversity between people. I have done this by including the use of a church.
Showing religion in this shows diversity between people and I feel that is is a good
thing to include.
What style have you employed in your
products?
• Discuss influences/ existing products
• What visual style does your work have and why did you choose it?
• The visual styles I have used are 2d, texture and busy.
• The first visual style that I have used is making my work 2d. I chose this specifically because I felt
that 2d would give the story the best look because I think that I was able to create more detailed
characters with creating 2d instead of 3d. Something already existing with this style is the TV show
the Simpsons.
• The second visual style I have used is textured. The reason that I have used this is that I wanted to
give my work a realistic look and feel about it and I thought this was the best way to do it. I was
inspired to do this by the children's book Bears don’t read. In this they have used different textures
to give the book a different look and this I why I wanted to use textures in my book.
• The final visual style I have used is making it busy. The reason that I have made the scenes that I
have created busy is to keep the viewer interested. Having my scenes busy I think gives the viewer
more to look at and will keep them interested in the story and make them want to read on. If I was
to have my scenes passive I think that this would make the reader bored as this is a kids book and
often it I read more than once so if I was to make it buys they would be more interested.
What were the strengths and weaknesses
of the pre-production and planning
• How did the planning and research help
• How well did you manage your time
• Reference specific examples
• One of the strengths that I had during the pre-production and planning stages is that I
had a clear idea that of what I wanted to produce and how I wanted to do it. This meant
that I was able to write out my plans for the production stages. I was able to do this
easily including details of what I was going to do. This is due to the research that I did
into other stories and how they have been created.
• Another strength of the planning and production stages that I had was that I was able to
manage my time well. I did this by setting myself deadlines for when I had to have my
plans done by so I could start the production of my story book.
• A final strength that I had is the research that I did into other stories. From this I was
able to look into other stories and designs and come up with ideas on how I wanted to
construct and make mine.
• One weakness that I had during the pre-production and planning
stages is that I feel that some of the work I did didn't include
enough details in certain areas. I feel that I could have explained
certain areas such as the health and safety areas more. Including
further details on how you would overcome and prevent certain
safety issues.
• Another weakness that I had during these stages is that I feel that
I could have had more experience with the shape tool. I feel that
when I started to create my book that I didn't have enough know
how on how to use the tool effectively. I would have liked to be
able to experiment with the tool more before I started to create
my book.
• A final weakness is that I feel that my script could have been
developed and adapted more. My script that I used for my final
product I feel could have been a little more simplified as it maybe
too complex for a children's story.
Historical and cultural context
• How does your work compare to what has come before? What
other similar products have existed in the past? What current
products exist?
• The story that I have created is a less violent and gruesome
version of the original story. The original version of my story Jack
and the Giant killer ends with the main character Jack, killing the
giant who had been stealing all of his cows. This as a
children's story in the past would have been more acceptable
compared to todays children's story. Todays stories are often
more sensitive towards having violence in them as they don’t
want to teach kids that violence is the way to go about dealing
with things, where as when the story was first written they
weren't as conscious about this.
• Some past work that is similar to my story is jack and the
beanstalk. This is similar to the story as it does involve a
conflict between a young boy and a giant and this conflict is
started through theft. Stories that have been created before
often would have been used to scare children, making them
think that if they steal that they are going to get into a lot of
trouble. Where as now the stories aren't used for this
purpose they are often used for the process of
entertainment.
• When looking at past and current stories there is also a
difference in illustration. In the older version of these stories
the illustrations were either basic and hand drawn or had no
illustrations at all. When these stories would have been first
created the stories would have had no illustration in it and
often what the characters and other aesthetics would have
been left to the viewers imagination. As these
stories progressed and so did time these would often then
gain illustrations. These would often be hand crafted using
pencils and water colours. These would then be included in
the book to add the visual aspect to the story. The more
modern of the books are created using more technical
programs to make the story look realistic and give it a modern
look.

  • 2. Does your final product reflect your original intentions? • Compare your planning/digital flat plans/ storyboards to your final product • I think that my final product does in a way reflect my intentions from the start of the project. Looking at my original storyboards I think that the plans that I have drawn out look similar to what I have as my final product. The positioning of the characters and aesthetics I feel are similar to what I have ended up with in my final product. The only reason why these may have changed is due to different aesthetics being added into the scene as well as the original ones. I developed these into my digital flat plans that were a more detailed version of my storyboard. I feel that this looks a closer to my final product. The positioning in these are a lot closer as I have then made the changes to the aesthetics and the look of the images overall.
  • 3. This can be seen in the 2 images above. Looking at these we can see that they are a close representation. You can see that the objects used are the same with a few added features and textures. Overall I feel that my digital flat plans and storyboards do reflect my original intentions and that the changes I have made are not major and still make them representative to my intentions. I also think that my character ideas do reflect my original intentions. I set out for these to be simple, easy to understand characters with no complicated aspects to them and this suits the audience that I am targeting. I also intended them to look medieval as this is where the time setting of my story is set.
  • 4. How well have you constructed your images? • How well have you constructed your images? You could talk about the overall visual appearance and well as the use of texture and colour. • I think that I have constructed my images quite well. I feel that I have made them to the best of my ability. I have done this through the use of the shape tool along with other tools. I think the overall look of my images at the start looked quite basic as I just used block colours such as green for the grass, blue for the sky and brown for the trees. I then to this added the textures. After adding the textures however, I feel that my images look a lot more detailed, realistic and pleasing to the eye. Once it was transformed into this more detailed form the images looked a lot better and looked better than it did with just previous block colours.
  • 5. • How well have you constructed your images? You could talk about the overall visual appearance and well as the use of texture and colour. • However one thing that I feel I could have done to improve the look of my images is the use of colour in the sky background. I feel that even though these do look realistic I feel that I could have used the colours more effectively to make the representation look better. • Another thing I thing I could have improved is some of the textures that I have used. I feel that some of these were not quite as accurate as I would have liked them to be as they didn’t represent the ideas that I originally had. I would have improved this by looking at different textures and taking my time more while looking at these.
  • 6. How well have you used text to anchor your images • You should talk about the combination of words, images and text. • I think that I have used my text well to anchor my images. I have done this by making sure the text that I have used creates meaning along with the illustrations of my story. On some on the pages I have included less text than other ones. This is done to support what is happening on the pages and some of them do need more text than others as the amount of words is dependant on the need for description.
  • 7. For example the 2 images bellow illustrate the way that I have used the different amount of text to help illustrate what is being seen in the pages. In the 1st image there is a minimal amount of text used. This is due to the fact that text is needed to explain what is happening not a lot of text is needed in on this page. The text used in this still creates understanding and a relationship with the images from the page. However in the second image we can see that more text is used but the relationship between it and the images are still the same as other images with less text.
  • 8. Is your product suitable for your audience? • Reference your proposal • Give an audience profile and describe suitability in reference to content • The profile of my audience is shown in the picture bellow. • I feel that the product that I have created is suitable for the audience that I am targeting. The reason for this is that I feel that the content I have made for my book is appropriate. The content doesn’t include any prejudices, violence or bad language that may mean that the story wouldn’t fit the 3-6 year old target audience I have set. I also think that it fits in with the class specification that I have set. • I have had to be very careful in terms of keeping violence out of the story. I had to adapt the end of the story due to the end of the original story being where the main character kills the giant. To make sure that it was suitable for the ages 3-6 years old, I had to remove this ending and change it as kids of this age are quite impressionable and violence can not be represented in a children's story book. • With the bad language in my story I was being very cautious to make sure that non of this was in there as this would absolutely be inappropriate for my target audience. I did this by doing an overall check within the story to see if any bad language was used but as this was not the case I didn’t have to do any censorship myself. • With the prejudices I made sure that there is no cultural, age or gender discrimination in my story. I have done this by making sure that I have included all different characters in my story. I have done this in order to cause no influence in terms of beliefs towards the consumer. • Finally I feel that the story that I have created fits in well with the class specification that I have said in my audience profile. I have done this by barely changing any part of the story, keeping it as traditional as possible.
  • 9. What do you like/dislike about the techniques you have used? • Reference specific tools you used with images • The main tools that I used in the production of my story are the shape tool and this was backed up by the warp tool. I also used textures and the brush tool to add effects to the look of my final work. What I like about the tools that I used is that they are all simple and easy to use. With the shape tool it I was able to create and design the aesthetics that I wanted to with no great difficulty at all. With the use of the warp tool I was able to manipulate the shapes into different looks to suit the environment that I want them to fit into. • Another things that I like about the tools that I used are that they allowed me to create a realistic look for my project. Adding textures allowed me to give the visuals a realistic look to my work and I feel this added to the overall finished product. The same thing has come from the brush tool. When using this I used an option in the tool that was a grass effect. This allowed me to add grass effects around the bottom of trees, adding to the visual aspects. • A final thing I like about using these tools is that if you are inexperience with using these, they are not hard to figure out how to use. Once you start using them more often you become more confident and then they become easy tools to use.
  • 10. • What I dislike about the techniques I used is that my skills with them weren't as developed I would have like them to be. I would have liked to have been able to have gained more experience with the tools before I was to use them. • Another thing that I dislike about the tools that I used is that I didn’t always have the ability to get the exact shapes that I wanted. The warp tool allowed me to be able to manipulate the shapes in a way that I wanted however I was still not able to get the shapes I had wanted to as ever this is still restricted to a certain extent. I feel that if I had used another technique like rotoscoping I would have been able to achieve this. • A final thing that I dislike about the tools that I used is that I was restricted with the shapes that I could use in order to create the my content. The shapes that I had were the basic polygonal, ellipses, rectangle shapes and also a few more pre-made shapes. These allowed me to create the things that I did want but did limit me to only these basic shapes. If I had used a different technique I would have been able to create more advanced aesthetics.
  • 11. What do you like/dislike about how your final product looks? • What I like about my final product is how it has turned out. I am happy with how the entire product has turned out. I think that the way that my product looks is basic but also is intriguing and can keep the interest of the audience. This would allow it to be easy for the target audience to understand and be interested in the story. • Another thing that I like about my final products is that it looks realistic and this is due to the way that I have used the textures. I feel that the use of textures in my work adds to the overall appearance of the aesthetics in the images. I feel that this is the best option in my work as adding this gives a basic look image, a more in depth a quality look about the overall finished product. • A final thing that I like about the look of my final product is that I feel that I have used the tools to my disposal. The reason for this is that one of the tools I used added a lot of detail and gave me added realistic look to my work. The tool was the paint brush with a grass attachment. This allowed me to added pieces of grass to the bottom of things like trees. This added to the overall appearance of the final product increasing the realism of the images.
  • 12. • What I dislike about my final product is that the characters I have made don’t look as realistic as I would have liked. I feel that even though they do symbolise people I do not believe they do this in a realistic way. • Another thing that I dislike about my final product is that the text in the image is often hard to read. This is due to the colour of text being a dark colour on a light or dark background making the overall text hard to read a times. A way that I would change this to make it much easier to read would be by adding either an outer glow or stroke to the text. This would add colour to the outside of text highlighting it making it easier to read.
  • 13. Why did you include the content you used? • In my product I have used different textures, colour pallets, effects and font. • The first thing I used is the different colour pallets. The reason why I used the colour pallets that I have are because they are simple. This is due to the audience that I am targeting being young and using simple colour pallets will make it easy to look at and not too complicated for them to understand. I also used this colour pallet because I wanted the colours to be traditional. • The second thing I used is the font for text. I have used the same font, Myriad Pro, throughout my product. The reason for using this font specifically is that it is easy to read as it is in block capitals and is not too small. I did this so it was readable to all ages as I don’t want to make the text too small for older people to read. I also chose to make it this size as I didn’t want to make the text fill up to much of the page and obstruct the rest of the image.
  • 14. • The third thing I used is the use of effect. The reason why I used the effects that I have is because I feel it adds to the overall finished product. The effects that I have used are strokes and effects through the brush tool. I used the strokes to be show boundaries between certain areas. For example I have used this is the windows and door on the house that I have made it indicate the separations of the different areas. The other effect that I used comes from the brush tool. I have used the grass effect brush to add looks to the trees in my images. This has been used as a leaf effect to give it a realistic look as this what I have strived for in my final product. • The final thing I used is textures. The reason why I used the textures is that I wanted to make my final product look really realistic and I felt this was the best way to do it. The different textures represent and give realism to each aesthetic that I have used in on. The reason behind me using different textures is that specific areas needed individual textures to be able to make them look realistic. For example if I was to use a bark texture on grass this would not look as realistic as I would want it to be.
  • 15. What signs, symbols or codes have your used in your work? • Choices of colour, style, locations, character design and tone all give additional meaning to your work. • One of the meanings that is represented in my work by my work is through buildings designs. These building designs and architecture suggest that this is set in a European country. This is also suggested by the religious symbol of Christianity which is in the form of a church. This is due to the majority of countries within Europe being Christian based. • The colours that I have used in my work do create symbolism. This symbolism is for the main characters as the colours they are wearing do have meanings. The first main character, Jack’s father, is wearing a white shirt. The colour white indicates purity. This means that the character can be trusted and is honest to other people. The other main character, Jack, is wearing a brown shirt. Brown has the connotations of reliable and honesty. This gives the feeling that the character can be trusted by the viewer and also the characters in the story. This is also a vital part of the story as Jack, the main character, has to be trusted by his father and the rest of the characters when he says all their cows have been stolen and need help find it.
  • 16. What representations can be found in your work? • How are men, women or children shown in your work? Does your work feature different ages, races, social groups or religions? Does a lack of any variety of character types create its own representation? • I think that men, women and children are all represented in my final piece of work. I have tried to do this by making sure that each gender is represented in the scenes that I have created involving my characters. Despite this just one female character does feature in my story. I do not think that this has any negative connotations as the time that the story is set is in a time where male dominated society.
  • 17. • I do not think that a lack of variety of characters in race, religion, or gender creates it own representations. The reason for this is due to the times that my story is set. My story is set in the medieval times and during these times there was not a whole lot of diversity. There was not a lot of immigration between countries in these times and it was also a patriarchal society. As I have wanted to keep the story as traditional as possible, I have kept these social areas as they were during the times of origin for the story. • In my work I have featured people of different ages and people of religion. The reason why I have included different ages is that this is one of the main points of my story. It is about a father and a son who live on a farm and who's lives are being ruined by their animals being stolen. This means that the inclusion of different ages is important to my story. The reason for including people of religion is to show diversity between people. I have done this by including the use of a church. Showing religion in this shows diversity between people and I feel that is is a good thing to include.
  • 18. What style have you employed in your products? • Discuss influences/ existing products • What visual style does your work have and why did you choose it? • The visual styles I have used are 2d, texture and busy. • The first visual style that I have used is making my work 2d. I chose this specifically because I felt that 2d would give the story the best look because I think that I was able to create more detailed characters with creating 2d instead of 3d. Something already existing with this style is the TV show the Simpsons. • The second visual style I have used is textured. The reason that I have used this is that I wanted to give my work a realistic look and feel about it and I thought this was the best way to do it. I was inspired to do this by the children's book Bears don’t read. In this they have used different textures to give the book a different look and this I why I wanted to use textures in my book. • The final visual style I have used is making it busy. The reason that I have made the scenes that I have created busy is to keep the viewer interested. Having my scenes busy I think gives the viewer more to look at and will keep them interested in the story and make them want to read on. If I was to have my scenes passive I think that this would make the reader bored as this is a kids book and often it I read more than once so if I was to make it buys they would be more interested.
  • 19. What were the strengths and weaknesses of the pre-production and planning • How did the planning and research help • How well did you manage your time • Reference specific examples • One of the strengths that I had during the pre-production and planning stages is that I had a clear idea that of what I wanted to produce and how I wanted to do it. This meant that I was able to write out my plans for the production stages. I was able to do this easily including details of what I was going to do. This is due to the research that I did into other stories and how they have been created. • Another strength of the planning and production stages that I had was that I was able to manage my time well. I did this by setting myself deadlines for when I had to have my plans done by so I could start the production of my story book. • A final strength that I had is the research that I did into other stories. From this I was able to look into other stories and designs and come up with ideas on how I wanted to construct and make mine.
  • 20. • One weakness that I had during the pre-production and planning stages is that I feel that some of the work I did didn't include enough details in certain areas. I feel that I could have explained certain areas such as the health and safety areas more. Including further details on how you would overcome and prevent certain safety issues. • Another weakness that I had during these stages is that I feel that I could have had more experience with the shape tool. I feel that when I started to create my book that I didn't have enough know how on how to use the tool effectively. I would have liked to be able to experiment with the tool more before I started to create my book. • A final weakness is that I feel that my script could have been developed and adapted more. My script that I used for my final product I feel could have been a little more simplified as it maybe too complex for a children's story.
  • 21. Historical and cultural context • How does your work compare to what has come before? What other similar products have existed in the past? What current products exist? • The story that I have created is a less violent and gruesome version of the original story. The original version of my story Jack and the Giant killer ends with the main character Jack, killing the giant who had been stealing all of his cows. This as a children's story in the past would have been more acceptable compared to todays children's story. Todays stories are often more sensitive towards having violence in them as they don’t want to teach kids that violence is the way to go about dealing with things, where as when the story was first written they weren't as conscious about this.
  • 22. • Some past work that is similar to my story is jack and the beanstalk. This is similar to the story as it does involve a conflict between a young boy and a giant and this conflict is started through theft. Stories that have been created before often would have been used to scare children, making them think that if they steal that they are going to get into a lot of trouble. Where as now the stories aren't used for this purpose they are often used for the process of entertainment. • When looking at past and current stories there is also a difference in illustration. In the older version of these stories the illustrations were either basic and hand drawn or had no illustrations at all. When these stories would have been first created the stories would have had no illustration in it and often what the characters and other aesthetics would have been left to the viewers imagination. As these stories progressed and so did time these would often then gain illustrations. These would often be hand crafted using pencils and water colours. These would then be included in the book to add the visual aspect to the story. The more modern of the books are created using more technical programs to make the story look realistic and give it a modern look. Modern Book Example, 2015 Old Book Example, 1918
