Digital Graphic Narrative Planning
Use this booklet to help structure your planning and collate your planning documents.
Considerations:
There are lots of things to consider in this project. Fill out each section in detail to show you have thought about each one. You
should imagine that this is a live project, so considerations like cost, quantity and codes of practice must be thought about in that
context rather than just as a college project.
Costs:
This project will cost me nothing as I will be doing all of my work on the Mac Book, all of my work will be digital
and will be completed at college so will not cost me anything. If you consider how I travel to college everyday
then it will have some sort of price required.
Available resources:
My work will be done on the Mac Book, Photoshop and PowerPoint. I will also need to use the internet to get
stock images as inspiration for templates. As I am doing my whole project on a digital format this means that I
will not need any pens or pencils or a scanner.
Quantity:
The story I am going to produce has been around for many years. Newer versions of the story keep appearing
every couple of years in forms of books and films, due to this I don’t think producing a mass quantity would
appeal to my target market or be profitable of a large scale. However I feel that one-drop off would benefit
more in this situation, sort of like a limited edition style of story. I will most probably produce around 500
books.
Audience and Target Market:
My book will be made for children as it follows the classic fairy-tale ‘Little Red Riding Hood’. The age will
range from 3 to 6 years old. The language in my book will have to be very child friendly to appeal to this age
range. The words used will need to be simple so young children will be able to understand my book and can
enjoy it at the same time. There is no gender specification to my book as the story is very mixed and boys and
girls can enjoy it. It is a 50% boy and 50% girl friendly book.
Following on from this, I have realised that the words I use in my book need to be child friendly.
Quality Factors:
Whilst doing this project compared to all of my others I have found out that attending my lessons works best
because I have found out that this leads me to not get held behind on lots of work and then have to rush
through it to complete it by the deadline. I have found out that doing some sort of work each lesson keeps me
on track and then I do not need to rush my work if I am behind. I have also found out over the course of all of
there projects that asking my teacher for help and feedback actually helps a lot as it shows me what I need to
improve to get my work to the best of its ability.
Whilst doing my work I have also found out that listening to music while I do my work helps me concentrate
more and stay focused so i am not distracted by anything in the room.
Codes of Practice:
Within the codes of practice there is a publishers association section where it states how publishers should
act and interact with authors. This code of practice talks about a variety of subjects such legal and financial
topics/issues as well as issues such as time, standard of work, and defamation. These particular codes of
practice mean that if you give a publisher or a company an example of your work that you will produce
something similar for them and then you do not produce it on time then the company and/ or publisher are
allowed to drop you and not pay you anything as you will be delaying the schedule and production process.
Regulation:
The Obscene Publications Act 1959 is an act in terms of regulation that sets out rules for what you shouldn't
be allowed to publish. This is something that will relate with my book that I am going to make because of the
fact that it is aimed for an audience of 3-6 then there will be no swearing within the text. Again something else
that will relate with this book and also is apart of the Obscene Publications Act illustration, due to the audience
range that the book will be marketed and promoted at there will be no graphic material, drugs, violence or any
obscene material that will not be suitable for a audience of young children.
Not only when looking at regulation do you need to refer to the Obscene publications act but you can also
refer to the Equality Act 2010 (the updated version of the current act). The Equality act is there to protect
people, for example discrimination against gender, ethnic groups, disability and age..
Copyright:
I am using the story ‘Little Red Riding Hood’ to create and produce a children’s book. Due to the story having
been around for years, it has no copyright, like most fairy-tales.
If I am going to use any type of font it will be from the website ‘DaFont.com’. I will only use the font if the
website says it is copyright free. Fonts is also an issue to consider in terms of copyright, in my planning I
rushed my work as I did not have enough time to plan my fonts, but it will be easy to find a nice and suitable
font to use in my book. Following on from this, if I am to get ideas from an image I will not be copying the
image completely or taking specific parts from a popular animated character, as it will not be copyright free,
therefore I will not be able to use it.
Ethical Issues:
In the time I have been looking at this story I have found nothing in terms of cultural elements that could be
deemed as insensitive. I have also found out that I need to change the ending of my story because in the end
of the original version the wolf slips off of the top of the house ad drowns in a river or pond. In the well-known
version the wolf is slayed by the woodcutter. This ending is more children friendly as it is not as graphic as the
original is. I am going to keep the location of my story fairly neutral so no one will find it offensive or find it
discriminating in any sort of way.
Resources:
A successful project relies on good planning. Considering all the resources you will need for a project and then assessing which
you already have and which you need will help ensure you are ready to start your project.
If there is a resource you don’t currently have, then consider how you are going to get it before you go in to production.
Resource:
Do you have
it? What do you need to do to get it?
Adobe Photoshop Yes Nothing as it is already installed on the Mac
An Apple Mac Yes I will not need anything as they are already set up at college
Microsoft PowerPoint Yes Go on to the installed app from the computer
Internet Yes Log in to the internet using ‘bbc.co.uk’ when I get to college
Production Schedule:
Delivering your project on time is vital. In order to do this, you need a solid plan of action. This will help you divide up your work in
to manageable chunks to be tackled one at a time. It will also allow you to plan which tasks need to be done in which order. It will
also allow you to track your progress each day. If you are falling behind, you will need to modify the way you work. If you work
faster than expected, you can clearly see what the next steps you need to take are.
Each session is a half day of college.
Session 1: Monday Morning
Download my selected font from the website ‘DaFont’ and write the words from number 1 of my script.
I will create the background fro my first page as well as the second background, as they are both
different scenes.
Session 2: Monday Afternoon
I will then create Little Red Riding Hoody and the Wolf.
I will then add those two characters to where appropriate on the pages.
Session 3: Tuesday Morning
I will add the script on top of pages 1 and 2.
I will then go on to create the background for page 3 in Granny’s cottage.
Session 4: Thursday Afternoon
Then I will create the character of Granny.
Then using the same font I will add number 3 from my script onto the page.
I will then add Granny and the Wolf to the page.
Session 5: Friday Morning
I will then create the background for page 4.
Use the same Wolf character but edit Granny’s clothes on to it.
Add the Wolf on to the background.
Put text from number 4 from my script on to the page where appropriate.
Session 6: Monday Morning
Edit Red’s facial expression so it looks like she is asking a question.
Use the same background from page 3 and put number 5 from my script on to the page.
Use the background from page 4 and add Red to the scene.
Add the text from number 6 from my script to the background.
Session 7: Monday Afternoon
Edit the Wolf’s face so it is angry and edit its body so it looks like it is pouncing on Red like it says in my
script.
Put number 7 from my script on to background 4.
Using the same background from page 4 add Red (but with a scared facial expression) and the Wolf.
Then place the text from number 8 from my script on to the page.
Make the background for number 8 of my script.
Create the character of the woodcutter.
Put all characters in the final background back in Granny’s house with the wolf on the floor.
Then put the text from number 10 of my script on to the final page.
Health and safety:
Your health and safety and that of those around you is very important. Just like in industry, an accident could prevent you from
working. Whilst we don’t work in a highly dangerous environment, there are still risks. Some are short term, such as trips and
spillages whilst others, such as long term damage to eyesight or back problems, may affect you much later in life.
Consider the risks based on the activities you will be undertaking during the project. Explain how you could prevent them from
happening.
Ensure you reference appropriate pieces of legislation, design to protect people at work.
Health and Safety Issue How can you prevent it?
Tripping over bags and chairs
Ensure that chairs are tucked under desks completely.
Make sure that bags are placed on chairs or under the
table when they are not in use, this will prevent them from
being a tripping hazard.
Eyes becoming strained (Health and Safety Regulations
1992)
This happens mostly whilst on Photoshop but using the
‘zoom’ tool can really minimize this happening. Also by
adjusting the computer screen regularly will prevent
screen glare.
Discomfort (Health and Safety Regulations 1992)
I will make sure that I am sat right in the chair, and that it
is at a good height off the floor. Also ensure that if I am
working on the computer for longer than an hour to take
short 5-minute breaks.
Spillage of liquids
Keep all liquids away from computers; keep them in my
bag or on the floor. If putting a drink on the floor make
sure it has a lid and keep it away from cables.
Cables (possible trip hazard)
Keep cables tucked under tables and desks to avoid trip
hazards. Also keep wires on top of the desk away from
the keypad and mouse to avoid them getting in the way
whilst working on the computer.

Planning booklet 3talia-2

  • 1. Digital Graphic Narrative Planning Use this booklet to help structure your planning and collate your planning documents. Considerations: There are lots of things to consider in this project. Fill out each section in detail to show you have thought about each one. You should imagine that this is a live project, so considerations like cost, quantity and codes of practice must be thought about in that context rather than just as a college project. Costs: This project will cost me nothing as I will be doing all of my work on the Mac Book, all of my work will be digital and will be completed at college so will not cost me anything. If you consider how I travel to college everyday then it will have some sort of price required. Available resources: My work will be done on the Mac Book, Photoshop and PowerPoint. I will also need to use the internet to get stock images as inspiration for templates. As I am doing my whole project on a digital format this means that I will not need any pens or pencils or a scanner.
  • 2. Quantity: The story I am going to produce has been around for many years. Newer versions of the story keep appearing every couple of years in forms of books and films, due to this I don’t think producing a mass quantity would appeal to my target market or be profitable of a large scale. However I feel that one-drop off would benefit more in this situation, sort of like a limited edition style of story. I will most probably produce around 500 books. Audience and Target Market: My book will be made for children as it follows the classic fairy-tale ‘Little Red Riding Hood’. The age will range from 3 to 6 years old. The language in my book will have to be very child friendly to appeal to this age range. The words used will need to be simple so young children will be able to understand my book and can enjoy it at the same time. There is no gender specification to my book as the story is very mixed and boys and girls can enjoy it. It is a 50% boy and 50% girl friendly book. Following on from this, I have realised that the words I use in my book need to be child friendly. Quality Factors: Whilst doing this project compared to all of my others I have found out that attending my lessons works best because I have found out that this leads me to not get held behind on lots of work and then have to rush through it to complete it by the deadline. I have found out that doing some sort of work each lesson keeps me on track and then I do not need to rush my work if I am behind. I have also found out over the course of all of there projects that asking my teacher for help and feedback actually helps a lot as it shows me what I need to improve to get my work to the best of its ability. Whilst doing my work I have also found out that listening to music while I do my work helps me concentrate more and stay focused so i am not distracted by anything in the room. Codes of Practice: Within the codes of practice there is a publishers association section where it states how publishers should act and interact with authors. This code of practice talks about a variety of subjects such legal and financial topics/issues as well as issues such as time, standard of work, and defamation. These particular codes of practice mean that if you give a publisher or a company an example of your work that you will produce something similar for them and then you do not produce it on time then the company and/ or publisher are allowed to drop you and not pay you anything as you will be delaying the schedule and production process.
  • 3. Regulation: The Obscene Publications Act 1959 is an act in terms of regulation that sets out rules for what you shouldn't be allowed to publish. This is something that will relate with my book that I am going to make because of the fact that it is aimed for an audience of 3-6 then there will be no swearing within the text. Again something else that will relate with this book and also is apart of the Obscene Publications Act illustration, due to the audience range that the book will be marketed and promoted at there will be no graphic material, drugs, violence or any obscene material that will not be suitable for a audience of young children. Not only when looking at regulation do you need to refer to the Obscene publications act but you can also refer to the Equality Act 2010 (the updated version of the current act). The Equality act is there to protect people, for example discrimination against gender, ethnic groups, disability and age.. Copyright: I am using the story ‘Little Red Riding Hood’ to create and produce a children’s book. Due to the story having been around for years, it has no copyright, like most fairy-tales. If I am going to use any type of font it will be from the website ‘DaFont.com’. I will only use the font if the website says it is copyright free. Fonts is also an issue to consider in terms of copyright, in my planning I rushed my work as I did not have enough time to plan my fonts, but it will be easy to find a nice and suitable font to use in my book. Following on from this, if I am to get ideas from an image I will not be copying the image completely or taking specific parts from a popular animated character, as it will not be copyright free, therefore I will not be able to use it. Ethical Issues: In the time I have been looking at this story I have found nothing in terms of cultural elements that could be deemed as insensitive. I have also found out that I need to change the ending of my story because in the end of the original version the wolf slips off of the top of the house ad drowns in a river or pond. In the well-known version the wolf is slayed by the woodcutter. This ending is more children friendly as it is not as graphic as the original is. I am going to keep the location of my story fairly neutral so no one will find it offensive or find it discriminating in any sort of way.
  • 4. Resources: A successful project relies on good planning. Considering all the resources you will need for a project and then assessing which you already have and which you need will help ensure you are ready to start your project. If there is a resource you don’t currently have, then consider how you are going to get it before you go in to production. Resource: Do you have it? What do you need to do to get it? Adobe Photoshop Yes Nothing as it is already installed on the Mac An Apple Mac Yes I will not need anything as they are already set up at college Microsoft PowerPoint Yes Go on to the installed app from the computer Internet Yes Log in to the internet using ‘bbc.co.uk’ when I get to college Production Schedule: Delivering your project on time is vital. In order to do this, you need a solid plan of action. This will help you divide up your work in to manageable chunks to be tackled one at a time. It will also allow you to plan which tasks need to be done in which order. It will
  • 5. also allow you to track your progress each day. If you are falling behind, you will need to modify the way you work. If you work faster than expected, you can clearly see what the next steps you need to take are. Each session is a half day of college. Session 1: Monday Morning Download my selected font from the website ‘DaFont’ and write the words from number 1 of my script. I will create the background fro my first page as well as the second background, as they are both different scenes. Session 2: Monday Afternoon I will then create Little Red Riding Hoody and the Wolf. I will then add those two characters to where appropriate on the pages. Session 3: Tuesday Morning I will add the script on top of pages 1 and 2. I will then go on to create the background for page 3 in Granny’s cottage.
  • 6. Session 4: Thursday Afternoon Then I will create the character of Granny. Then using the same font I will add number 3 from my script onto the page. I will then add Granny and the Wolf to the page. Session 5: Friday Morning I will then create the background for page 4. Use the same Wolf character but edit Granny’s clothes on to it. Add the Wolf on to the background.
  • 7. Put text from number 4 from my script on to the page where appropriate. Session 6: Monday Morning Edit Red’s facial expression so it looks like she is asking a question. Use the same background from page 3 and put number 5 from my script on to the page. Use the background from page 4 and add Red to the scene. Add the text from number 6 from my script to the background. Session 7: Monday Afternoon Edit the Wolf’s face so it is angry and edit its body so it looks like it is pouncing on Red like it says in my script. Put number 7 from my script on to background 4. Using the same background from page 4 add Red (but with a scared facial expression) and the Wolf.
  • 8. Then place the text from number 8 from my script on to the page. Make the background for number 8 of my script. Create the character of the woodcutter. Put all characters in the final background back in Granny’s house with the wolf on the floor. Then put the text from number 10 of my script on to the final page. Health and safety: Your health and safety and that of those around you is very important. Just like in industry, an accident could prevent you from working. Whilst we don’t work in a highly dangerous environment, there are still risks. Some are short term, such as trips and spillages whilst others, such as long term damage to eyesight or back problems, may affect you much later in life. Consider the risks based on the activities you will be undertaking during the project. Explain how you could prevent them from happening. Ensure you reference appropriate pieces of legislation, design to protect people at work. Health and Safety Issue How can you prevent it?
  • 9. Tripping over bags and chairs Ensure that chairs are tucked under desks completely. Make sure that bags are placed on chairs or under the table when they are not in use, this will prevent them from being a tripping hazard. Eyes becoming strained (Health and Safety Regulations 1992) This happens mostly whilst on Photoshop but using the ‘zoom’ tool can really minimize this happening. Also by adjusting the computer screen regularly will prevent screen glare. Discomfort (Health and Safety Regulations 1992) I will make sure that I am sat right in the chair, and that it is at a good height off the floor. Also ensure that if I am working on the computer for longer than an hour to take short 5-minute breaks. Spillage of liquids Keep all liquids away from computers; keep them in my bag or on the floor. If putting a drink on the floor make sure it has a lid and keep it away from cables. Cables (possible trip hazard) Keep cables tucked under tables and desks to avoid trip hazards. Also keep wires on top of the desk away from the keypad and mouse to avoid them getting in the way whilst working on the computer.
