Basic Dinosaur Facts
Dinosaurs are a group of reptiles that have lived on Earth for about 245 million years.
In 1842, the English naturalist Sir Richard Owen coined the term Dinosauria, derived from the Greek deinos, meaning “fearfully great,” and sauros, meaning “lizard.”
Dinosaur fossils have been found on all seven continents.
All non-avian dinosaurs went extinct about 66 million years ago.
There are roughly 700 known species of extinct dinosaurs.
Modern birds are a kind of dinosaur because they share a common ancestor with non-avian dinosaurs.
2. What Is a Dinosaur?
Dinosaurs were one of several kinds of prehistoric reptiles that lived
millions of years ago, before people.
3. • The word “Dinosaur” comes from Greek words meaning “terrible lizard,”
• The largest dinosaurs were over 30 meters long and up to 15 meters
tall.
• The smallest dinosaurs were about the size of a chicken!
• Dinosaurs were reptiles and most hatched from eggs.
4. There were lots of different kinds of Dinosaurs that lived at different times
• Some walked on two legs and some on four. Some could do both
• Some were speedy and some were slow
• Some had thick, bumpy skin. Some even had feathers.
• Some were armour-plated, some had horns, spikes or frills to defend
themselves.
5. Most dinosaurs were plant-eaters.
These are called herbivores.
Some dinosaurs were meat-eaters.
These are called carnivores.
6. Let’s Discuss a few Species of Dinosaurs
Tyrannosaurus Rex
As long as bus and twice the
weight of an Elephant, T-Rex
is one of the deadliest meat-
eating dinosaurs of all time.
7. Allosaurus Allosaurus are one of the
largest & killer dinosaurs.
They have knife-like teeth
and strongly built.
8. Velociraptor
Velociraptor was a small dinosaur that ran on its two back legs.
They are light, and fast.
Its jaws contained razor-sharp teeth useful for ripping apart flesh.
9. Spinosaurus Spinosaurus are probably
heavier and longer than
mighty T-rex. Spinosaurus
had a very long jaw and
pointed teeth. They had long
spines on their back.
10. Triceratops
The Triceratops is a well-known dinosaur. The
name Triceratops, which means “three-horned face,”
was inspired by the animal’s most striking feature.
They are four-legged herbivores known for their horns
and a frill on the back of their heads.
11. Stegosaurus
The Stegosaurus was given this name because it had a
row of enormous bony plates that ran along its back.
Stegosaurus was a plant eater. It used its spiked tail
and large plates to defend itself.
12. Ankylosaurus
Ankylosaurus were plant-eating dinosaurs. Dinosaurs belonging to this
family had short heavy bodies and were protected from head to tail with
bony plates and spikes.
It used its plates & tail to defend itself. With their tail, they can break the
teeth of carnivore dinosaurs.
13. Brachiosaurus
Brachiosaurus were one of
the tallest of all dinosaurs.
They were plant-eating
dinosaurs with long necks,
massive bodies, and four
pillar-like legs.
Their long neck helped them
to feed leaves from an
incredible height.
14. Death of the Dinosaur
One of the most well-known theories for the death of the
dinosaurs is “A meteor the size of a mountain slammed
into Earth 66 million years ago, filling the atmosphere
with gas, dust, and debris that drastically destroyed the
atmosphere and living beings”
