Media photographer analysis
1. Stu Williamson
In his portraits, he uses models, which do not show their faces clearly, to pose in
a dark theme. The photographs were taken to outline a different fashion to the
regular and do it successfully as the photographs are not ridiculous. These
photographs do not have much of a place to show as they are not something
which would appeal to the regular audience however certain people are bound
to admire the photographs and might even pay for them.
The composition of this photograph is so that the fabric is the main subject of the
photograph, hence it being in the centre and the largest. The secondary subject is
the woman who is stood a quarter of the scene away from the centre. The
lighting is a floodlight directly from the front, which casts minimal shadows on
the model and does not make her look alien to the bright background. The main
colour of this is black however it does not change anything involving the theme
as its effect of darkness is ruined by the bright background.
These are placed this way to emphasize the darkness of the fabric covering the
white background and give a meaning, which could be that the clothes are
making the scene, not the person wearing them.
2. The composition for this photograph has the main subject being the girl in the
middle and an abandoned house background behind her. It is this way in order
to highlight the white dress and matching hairstyle in the old, creepy theme.
The purpose of this is to show a type of fashion and how well it works with
specific surroundings. A filter is also placed over the photograph to make it look
vintage and colourless in order to make the theme all around the main subject
rather than standing out.
The lighting in this picture is dull and coming from the right side to simulate
natural light through the dusty windows. This picture appears to have a meaning
demonstrating how you can wear something completely opposite to the theme
around you and still fit in.
3. Michael Wolf
His work ranges in Photographs of an entire city to individual people’s faces. He
is based in China and one of his styles is to take close up pictures of unaware
strangers through windows. This category of photographs has little chance at
earning money but as they are free for the public to view online, their meanings
may contribute a few messages to society.
4. This photograph features a man looking suspiciously in the camera’s direction
with half of his face covered by shadows. The background is composed of pitch-
black shadow but is evened out by the bright window frame, which makes half of
a frame for the photograph. The colours in this photograph are relatively warm
which, in a way, contrasts the negative facial expression of the stranger. The
lighting in this photograph is clearly natural hence the large amount of shadow
however it could also be very dark and a flashlight is used in the top right of the
frame. The orientation is portrait as it naturally works better with capturing a
picture of a single person rather than the scenery. If there was any meaning to
this, it could be that not a lot of people appreciate a stranger taking a photograph
of them and would rather hide from the lens than have a random picture of them
uploaded onto the Internet.
5. This brightly lit photograph features a middle-aged man next to a teenage girl.
She is wearing a surgical mask due to it being a custom there in order to reduce
the spread of diseases. He looks pleased and her bowed down head shows they
might be attempting a hug on a packed train. The colours in this photograph are
a mix of warm and cold but the filter makes them cold on average. The lighting is
dull but not dark and there are little shadows in this scene therefore it is
achieved by natural light and this is obvious because the photographer’s arm is
reflected in the glass but a flash or light is not.. In my perspective, this
photograph has no meaning and simply demonstrates human affection.
Elena Eremina
She uses hamsters to create indoor and outdoor scenes of them doing everyday
things which a person may do on a smaller scale. One of the most common
themes is eating food and she is somewhat famous for these photographs
because they look both stunning and abstract. She could easily make money off
these photographs by selling them as physical framed pictures. Although these
photographs are not of people, they are still portrait photographs because there
are living creatures having their picture taken.
In this scene, a soft light is used from the right top corner to dimly illuminate the
hamsters. This provides the scene with a lot of shadows but also makes
6. everything clearly visible. The hamsters are casually eating all the food on their
back paws in a wooden room and the purpose could be to show how adorable
hamsters can be when they do people things. This photograph is dominant with
warm colours so the fluffy hamsters look warm and happy in this scene. The
theme is a kitchen, but despite the cutting board, this photograph shows that
they do not need the food prepared. The meaning of this could be that the
hamsters are actually very intelligent creatures even if they cannot speak.
The purpose of this photograph is to create a nice looking scene involving
hamsters and plants. In it are three hamsters on a shelf with plant pots and dried
herbs on the left alongside a knocked over plant on the centre of the floor. The
background is black and has a couple rays of light subtracting emptiness from
the right side of the scene. This is also the main light of the scene as the left side
of every object in the scene is covered in soft shadow. While this photograph has
7. dominant warm colours, the shadows and petals of the knocked over plant mix
up the image with their cooler colours. This provides the effect of a theme of
mixed thoughts and confusion as to what has happened, which the hamsters
seem to relate to well. The camera is focusing on all of the objects in the scene as
they have a relatively similar distance to each other from the camera. The
audience would be likely to believe the hamsters knocked the plant down
therefore the meaning to this photograph seems to be that anyone can have an
accident, or come across one and get blamed for it as these animals are both too
light and small to push the flower pot that far.
