Fonroche Solar Street Lighting Case Study: University Campus Lighting
1. Benefits of solar lighting
Solar lighting permits to get public lighting thanks to photovoltaic energy production. This lighting
has several advantages:
- Compared to a streetlight connected to the grid, the installation of a solar streetlight does
not require civil engineering, the installation is therefore much simpler, faster and most
of all viable economically.
- The electricity bill drops to 0€ - System 100% autonomous. The only solar energy
produced by the PV panel is used to power the solar streetlight.
- The installation of ten Fonroche solar streetlights permits to avoid the emission of more
than one ton of CO2 per year.
- Solar lighting poses no risk of electrical shock. The system is working in continuous current
(24VDC TBT), so there is no electrical handling necessary for installation.
- The several components have a long service life, with a first maintenance only after ten
years, with the shift of the battery.
- It is possible to perform all the lighting profiles with a solar streetlight (dimming during
the night, extinction of the streetlight…).
- It is possible to communicate with the solar streetlights in order to know remotely and
in real time their operating state and monitor their impact on the project.

2. Case Study: University Le Mirail - Toulouse (31) - France
1/ THE NEED
- Lighting of the accesses within the campus
- Safety and comfort within the campus
- Compliance with the EN13201 standard – Standard PRM –
CE2 Class (20 Lux on average)
2/ THE PROBLEM
- The rehabilitation of the university campus falls within a logic of sustainable development
- The immobilization of the area and therefore the works must be limited as much as possible.
3/ THE FONROCHE SOLUTION
- Fonroche Lighting has proposed 18 Smartlight Power365 single arm to illuminate the several
internal accesses to the university.
- The offered product is sized according to values measured by the nearest meteorological
stations to the project, based on the last ten years period. All the calculation is then based on
the worst period measured in order to ensure the operation of the solar streetlight all over the
year.
- From the first day of installation, the first solar streetlights set up have illuminated the building
periphery. It only took three days for all the university accesses to be illuminated.
- The solar streetlights Fonroche are sized to offer an autonomy of 365 days a year while being
compliant with the EN 13201 European lighting standard. The university accesses are secured
by lighting all along the year and compliant to the PRM standards (which allows all the students,
including people with reduced mobility, to access the campus).
- On the whole campus, the installation of the Fonroche Lighting solar streetlights will permit to
avoid the emission of more than 2 tons of CO2 per year.
4/ PHOTOMETRIC RESULTS
Fonroche Lighting photometric results for the study of Mirail University, according to the CE2 lighting
class:
Average illuminance Uniformity
20.20 lux 0.64
≥ 20.00 lux ≥ 0.40
