New Delhi: Ward co New Delhi: Days after Kapil
Sibal’s comments about the Congress’ decline sparked
another bout of infighting, party chief Sonia Gandhi
has included four members of the dissenting camp
in three committees set up to keep her informed on
matters relating to national security, foreign affairs and
the economy. Announced Friday, just before Ms Gandhi
leaves for Goa to escape Delhi pollution, the appoint-
ments are being seen as a move to ward off further
public embarrassment - such as that caused by Mr
Sibal’s interview to the Indian Express or the letter by
23 leaders challenging the Gandhi family’s control. The
committee on economic affairs includes former Finance
Minister P Chidambaram. The second committee (on
foreign affairs) has both Anand Sharma and Shashi

‘LOVE JIHAD’ INVENTED BY BJP
TO DIVIDE COUNTRY: GEHLOT
Kartikey Dev Singh
Jaipur: Known for his
immaculate timing
when it comes to open-
ing a front against the
rival camp, senior Con-
gress leader and Ra-
jasthan Chief Minister
Ashok Gehlot on Friday
cornered the Bhartiya
Janta Party (BJP), in his
now famous style of ver-
bal ‘war’, when he al-
leged that “Love Jihad”
is a word manufactured
by the BJP to divide the
nation and disturb com-
munal harmony.
With BJP govern-
ments in Uttar Pradesh,
Haryana and Madhya
Pradesh saying that
they are considering en-
actment of laws to curb
such marriages, Gehlot
hit back strongly at
what he considers a
“ploy to divide people”.
Gehlot, who often
uses social media plat-
form to take on the saf-
fron party, took to twit-
ter and said that mar-
riage is a personal deci-
sion and the BJP is
putting curbs on it.
“Love Jihad is a word
manufactured by the
BJP to divide the nation
and disturb communal
harmony. Marriage is a
matter of personal lib-
erty, bringing a law to
curb it is completely un-
constitutional and it
will not stand in any
court of law. Jihad has
no place in love,” Ge-
hlot tweeted.
“They are creating
an environment in the
nation where consent-
ing adults would be at
the mercy of state pow-
er. Marriage is a per-
sonal decision and
they are putting curbs
on it, which is like
snatching away per-
sonal liberty,” he said
in another tweet.
Gehlot said it seemed
to be a “ploy to disrupt
communal harmony,
fuel social conflict and
disregard constitution-
al provisions like the
state not discriminat-
ing against citizens on
any ground”. Turn to P6

6 CHILDREN AMONG 14 KILLED IN
ROAD ACCIDENT IN UP’S PRATAPGARH
Pratapgarh: Fourteen
people, including six
children, died in a tragic
road accident in Uttar
Pradesh’s Pratapgarh
after their car rammed
a truck on the highway
late on Thursday night.
All the occupants of the
SUV died in the crash
and several others have
been injured. The ac-
cident occured around
11.45pm on Thursday on
the Prayagraj-Lucknow
highway near Deshraj
Inara village. Visuals
from the accident show
a crumpled Mahindra
Bolero being pulled out
from the back of the
truck. Pratapgarh Super-
intendent of Police (SP)
Anurag Arya said the
truck had been parked at
the side of the highway
due to a punctured tyre
when the SUV rammed
it from behind in the
dead of the night. Half
of the car was pulled out
in a mangled state from
under the truck later by
police officials, he said.
All victims were return-
ing home to their village
in Kunda in the district
after attending a wedding
in Nawabganj, the police
official said, adding that
all help has been assured
to the families of the
victims. Five bodies were
recovered soon after the
crash whereas the rest
of the bodies were pulled
out after the crumbled
car was retrieved from
under the truck, which
took almost two hours.

MODI’S VACCINATION STRATEGY

Jaipur: In what could
be a severe jolt to the
trading class, Chief
Commissioner (SGST)
Abhishek Bhagotia has
decided to start recover-
ing approximately
Rs1600 crore on account
of C form demand of
2014-15. The central gov-
ernment had set Sep-
tember 30, 2020 as the
last date to submit C
forms after many exten-
sions. The trading com-
munity expected anoth-
er extension which has
not come their way now.
Bhagotia has decided
to himself monitor the
recovery of huge pend-
ing amount. He said,
“People have not sub-
mitted their C-forms
despite getting suffi-
cient time. In fact, in
some cases even C-
forms for FY 2009-2010
are due.”
It is noteworthy that
C form is used for the
sales done on conces-
sional VAT rates and it
is made available to
seller by the purchaser
of the goods on conces-
sional price.
Bhagotia has in-
structed his depart-
ment to start recover-
ing difference between
normal and concession-
al rates.
According to SGST
department right now
only cases of FY 2019-10
will be taken for consid-
eration and it is not pur-
suing cases of FY 2015-
16, 2016-17 and the first
quarter of 2017-18. It is
worth mentioning that
according to VAT rule
section 12 (7), the de-
partment can provide
relief to the taxpayer in
case of proper reasons
for not submitting the
C-form within the stipu-
lated time.

Jaipur: Energy minis-
ter Dr BD Kalla on
Thursday launched a
mobile app for effective
monitoring of electric-
ity theft. The vigilance
teams of DIMSOMs will
now be able make chal-
lan and submit data on-
line from spot through
the app developed by
Jaipur DISCOM.
JVVNL MD AK Gup-
ta said that the process
of preventing power
theft will now be com-
pletely transparent and
this will not cause trou-
ble to consumers.
However, in case of
complaints, these will
be resolved through
conciliation commit-
tees.
Kalla said reduction
of 1 percent in trans-
mission and distribu-
tion losses saves Rs. 450
crore and the state gov-
ernment in the last one
and a half years has
brought down the t&d
losses by more than 2
percent.
He said that the loss-
es which were 41% in
2005 are18 percent at
present. Appreciating
the move, Kalla said it
will also be implement-
ed in Ajmer and Jodh-

Jaipur: Former tour-
ism minister and
Deeg-Kumher MLA
Vishvendra Singh met
Chief Minister Ashok
Gehlot on Friday to de-
mand recommendation
of the state govern-
ment to the Centre to
provide OBC reserva-
tion to Jat community
people of Bharatpur
and Dholpur at the
Centre too. Interesting-
ly, Singh’s meeting
with Gehlot is being
touted as a ‘change of
heart’ for the former
minister who, it is said,
will be heading back in
the Gehlot Cabinet in
next expansion, and
since he has realised
and lernt that he will
have to work under Ge-
hlot’s ‘supervision’,
Singh preferred to
speak to Gehlot.
Raising the reservation
demand, Singh said
that former Vajpayee
government granted
OBC quota to Jats in
1999 but the people of
Bharatpur and Dhol-
pur were deprived of it.
“For this, we fought a
long battle and agitat-
ed. Three years ago, we
got success and the sur-
vey was done again and
quota to Jats of Dhol-
pur and Bharatpur was
given in state. It is our
demand from the state
government that a rec-
ommendation be sent
to Centre to provide
OBC quota to Jats of
both the districts in
centre,” he said.
Singh said he is con-
fident of full support
from the chief minister
regarding this demand.

Kota Bachao Sang-

said that the classroom
coaching should be re-
sumed in the city as
soon as possible as the
whole economy of the
city depends on the
lakhs of students who
come from across the
country to the city for
various coaching.
It is noteworthy that
all the activities of the
coaching industry had
been shut down more
than eight months ago
in March when the co-
rona pandemic broke
out. This forced the af-
filiate business like hos-
tels, PG, messes to close
and even shut the shops
of many street vendors.

brought dying
patients back
from the brink.
Butasexciteddoctorsraced
to get the miracle drug to
new patients, the miracle
melted away. In each and
every patient, the drug only
worked only for a while.
It turned out the drug
was very good at killing the
virus, but the virus was
even better at evolving re-
sistance to the drug. A
spontaneous mutation in
the virus’ genetic material
prevented the drug from
doing its work, and so the
mutant viruses were able
to replicate wildly despite
the drug, making the pa-
tients sick again. It took
another decade before sci-
entists found evolution-
proof therapies.
Could the same thing
happen to a COVID-19 vac-
cine?Couldavaccinethatis
safe and effective in initial
trials go on to fail because
thevirusevolvesitswayout
of trouble? As evolutionary
microbiologists who have
studied a poultry virus that
has evolved resistance to
two different vaccines, we
know such an outcome is
possible. We also think we
know what it takes to stop
it. COVID-19 vaccines could
fail – but if they have cer-
tain properties, they won’t.
HISTORY OF VACCINE
RESISTANCE
For the most part, human-
ity has been lucky: Most
human vaccines have not
been undermined by mi-
crobial evolution.
For instance, the small-
pox virus was eradicated
because it never found a
way to evolve around the
smallpox vaccine, and no
strain of the measles virus
haseverarisenthatcanbeat
the immunity triggered by
the measles vaccine.
But there is one excep-
tion.Abacteriumthatcaus-
es pneumonia managed to
evolve resistance against a
vaccine. Developing and re-
placing that vaccine with
another was expensive and
time-consuming, with sev-
en years between the initial
emergence of resistant
strains and the licensing of
the new vaccine.
There haven’t been other
failures for human vac-
cines yet, but there are
hints that viruses, bacteria
and parasites can evolve or
are evolving in response to
vaccination. Escape mu-
tants that are able to evade
vaccine-induced immunity
are regularly seen in the
microbes that cause hepa-
titis B and pertussis.
For such human diseas-
es as malaria, trypanoso-
miasis, influenza and
AIDS, vaccines have been
hard or impossible to de-
velop because the microbes
that cause those diseases
evolve so fast. In agricul-
tural settings, animal vac-
cines are frequently under-
mined by viral evolution.
Depending on how the
COVID-19 virus evolves,
the vaccines could become
less effective. Volanthe-

WHAT WOULD
IT LOOK LIKE?
If SARS-CoV-2 evolves in
response to a COVID vac-
cine, there are several di-
rections it could take. The
most obvious is what hap-
pens with the flu virus. Im-
munity works when anti-
bodies or immune cells
bind to molecules on the
surface of the virus. If mu-
tations in those molecules
on the surface of the virus
change, antibodies can’t
grab on to them as tightly
and the virus is able to es-
cape. This process explains
why the seasonal flu vac-
cine needs updating each
year. If this happens, a
COVID vaccine would need
frequent updating.
But evolution might
head off in other direc-
tions. It would be better for
human health, for exam-
ple, if the virus evolves a
stealth mode, perhaps by
reproducing slowly or hid-
ing in organs where immu-
nity is less active. Many
pathogens that cause bare-
ly noticeable chronic infec-
tions have taken this tack.
They avoid detection be-
cause they do not cause
acute disease.
A more dangerous ave-
nue would be if the virus
evolved a way to replicate
more quickly than the im-
munity generated by the
vaccine. Another strategy
would be for the virus to
target the immune system
and dampen vaccine-in-
duced immunity.
Virus evolution could undermine a COVID-19 vaccine!

COVID-19 WORRIES JOLT
DELHI INTO ACTION
ven as there are encouraging reports on
the development of Covid-19 vaccine, the
viruscontinuestocauseconcerninIndia.
After a surge in fresh cases, Delhi had to
cut down on number of invitees at wed-
dings and other gatherings from 200 to 50, enhance
finefornotwearingmasksfromRs500toRs2000and
launch a house-to-house survey for new cases. Peo-
ple, especially the elderly, have been advised to stay
indoors. These steps have been initiated after the
Delhi High Court pulled up the Aam Aadmi Party
governmentfornotimposingtimelycurbsevenafter
seeing the situation turning bad since November 1.
Situation in the national capital has also been found
worrying by Dr. V.K. Paul of Niti Ayog.
Delhi is not alone in dealing with the Covid cri-
sis. Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh re-introduced
night curfew in some of the affected cities in view
of the rising cases of new infections. After
Ahmedabad, night curfew was imposed in Rajkot,
Surat and Vadodara. Night curfew will be in force
in Bhopal, Indore, Gwalior, Ratlam and Vidisha
cities of Madhya Pradesh.
Under the circumstances, the BJP’s move to po-
liticise the Chhath festival against the AAP gov-
ernment with an eye on Bihari votes was highly
condemnable. The party backed out after the high
court dismissed a petition seeking permission for
Chhath puja. Now it is the turn of the Congress to
be critical of the hefty Rs 2000 fine for not wearing
a mask. Neither BJP nor the Congress thought it
fit to rise above politics to fight the pandemic.
E
IN-DEPTH
BENGAL AND VIOLENCE
DIFFICULT TO SEPARATE
iolence has been the hallmark of West
Bengal politics from the days of the
Naxalite movement, also known as peas-
ant revolt of 1967. It only exacerbated
under the Communist government of
Jyoti Basu neither doing much for the peasantry,
nor for Bengal’s development. Mohalla- level
groups of toughies controlled all activity and trade
unions made it difficult for industry to survive.
The temperamental Mamata Banerjee entered the
scene riding on the Ma, Manush and Maati slogan.
Nandigram violence, controversy over Singur, al-
lotment of land to Tata Motors at Singur, power
cuts helped. Killings, both political and communal,
continued even after she became chief minister of
the state. So much so that the Bharatiya Janata
Party is entering the poll fray on the twin planks
of political killings under Mamata Banerjee’s gov-
ernment and the rise of Islamism in the state.
Six persons dying in a plastic factory blast in
Malda, which the BJP claims was a bomb-making
unit, gave the party the ammo to enhance its fire-
power before the assembly elections. The party is
now demanding a probe by the National Investiga-
tion Agency while Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar
asked Mamata Banerjee to contain illegal bomb-
making. Mamata joined the slugfest with the re-
mark that the issue should not be politicised.
When elections are closed at hand, every death,
every blast will get politicized. Even if a BJP hood-
lum is involved in violence, the blame will be put
at TMC’s door. The effort from all sides should be
to eschew violence. With the BJP desperate to win
Bengal, and the TMC on the defensive, a bitter tus-
sle is on the cards.
V
he human mechanism is a
composite of the physical
body – an accumulation of
food consumed, the mental
body – the software and
memory part that makes in-
dividuals function in spe-
cific ways, and the energy
body – the fundamental
upon which these two are
housed. What is beyond this
is non-physical.
The compulsive and cyclical
nature of the body and mind
render themselves a barrier for
higher possibilities. Tantra is
to go beyond, so that compul-
siveness of the body and mind
does not keep us trapped in our
limitations. Tantra essentially
means “technique” or “tech-
nology.” Tantra is about learn-
ing to use the body, not as one-
self, but as a stepping-stone to
deliver this Being to the high-
est possible dimension.
BLOWING FROM THE TOP
Tantra is not about unbri-
dled sexuality, as assumed
by many. Sexuality is a fun-
damental instinct instilled
in our bodies to ensure the
species perpetuates itself.
This is a basic requirement.
At the same time, one must
know the limitations beyond
which it will not carry us. It
is only on recognising the
limitations and the longing
to touch other dimensions
enters, that Yoga and Tantra
become relevant.
Unlike sexuality, which
tends to find release at the low-
er level of the energy system,
Tantra is about building our
energies to the fountain-head
of the uppermost dimension of
the energy system, so that one’s
energies spill from the top. Of
the different energy manifesta-
tions in the body – referred to
as the 114 chakras – spilling
from the top three is consid-
ered the highest. If you have to
build up to this, every basic in-
stinct, including the sexual in-
stinct, emotions, intellect, and
survival process must be used
to build and hype the energy
system. The intention is to de-
ploy all instincts for which a
certain amount of energy is
dedicated in the body. If one
goes into an actual sexual act,
the build-up and the purpose of
it will be lost.
Sexual needs can be ful-
filled by forming relation-
ships for that purpose, ei-
ther within or outside the
fold. But using the spiritual
process to fulfill sexual com-
pulsions is reprehensible
and irresponsible. It can
lead to various levels of loss
because the tantric process
is not only used for the indi-
vidual’s spiritual growth,
but also to create an ener-
getic space to support other
possibilities that bring well-
being to many.
YOU DON’T HAVE
TO HUFF AND PUFF
The Guru-shishya relation-
ship is to deliver the shishya
to a higher dimension of
consciousness, not trap one
into the compulsive nature
of sexuality. Above all, this
sacred relationship is defi-
nitely orgasmic, but not sex-
ual. I am talking about up-
grading your technology.
You don’t have to huff and
puff to get into an orgasmic
state. If you sit with your
eyes closed, you can drip
with orgasms in every cell of
your body. Those who have
failed to achieve an orgasmic
state of existence will associ-
ate an ecstatic state with
sexuality because that’s
probably the highest level of
experience they have known.
People always try to take
recourse in the Krishna-Gopi
relationship. As the legend
goes, Krishna gave an orgas-
mic experience to 16,000 wom-
en simultaneously. This can-
not happen with sexual un-
ion. A shishya can establish a
very intimate relationship
with a Guru. Intimacy is gen-
erally understood only as two
bodies touching. The body is
not intimate enough for one
who is on the spiritual path.
The physical body is an accu-
mulation from outside, so in
the Tantric and Yogic sys-
tems, the body is never con-
sidered an intimate part of
you. Only when energies meet
and mingle and a Guru’s ener-
gies overwhelm and override
the shishya’s energies, it
leads to an orgasmic experi-
ence – a union, but not of the
sexual kind.
If all you want is to do a
meditation or spiritual prac-
tice, you don’t really need a
Guru. The Guru is here es-
sentially to overwhelm you
with nameless ecstasies.
Tantra is a technology of lib-
eration, not enslavement.

PM reviews...
Hailing the security
forces, he said they have
once again displayed
utmost bravery and pro-
fessionalism.
“Thanks to their
alertness, they have de-
feated a nefarious plot
to target grassroots lev-
el democratic exercises
in Jammu and Kash-
mir,” the prime minis-
ter added.
In the review meet-
ing, Home Minister
Amit Shah, NSA Ajit
Doval, foreign secre-
tary and top intelli-
gence officials were
present as Modi took
stock of the situation.
Four suspected
Jaish-e-Mohammad
terrorists were killed
and two policemen in-
jured in a gunbattle in
Nagrota on Thursday
after a truck carrying
newly infiltrated mili-
tants was intercepted,
police had said.
Inspector General of
Police (IGP), Jammu,
Mukesh Singh, had
said after the encoun-
ter that the terrorists
had come to execute a
“big plan” which has
now been foiled.
All eyes...
Ahead of Amit Shah’s
arrival, the AIADMK
convened a meeting of
its senior leaders to dis-
cuss poll-related issues
today.
Buzz is that the
AIADMK and the BJP
are to hold preliminary
alliance talks and dis-
cuss seat-sharing and
hence the visit of Shah
is crucial for NDA alli-
ance in Tamilnadu.
‘Asthmatic’ Sonia...
including some of
those who had written
a letter to her seeking
an organisational over-
haul.
Sonia Gandhi was
admitted to the Sir
Ganga Ram Hospital in
Delhi on July 30 eve-
ning. Later on Septem-
ber 12, she went abroad
for a few days for her
routine medical check-
up, and Rahul Gandhi
had accompanied her
during the visit.
The two leaders had
also missed the Mon-
soon session of Par-
liament which was
held under special
conditions during the
pandemic from Sep-
tember 14 to 23. The
Congress president
had shifted to Goa for
some time in January
last year where her
pictures of cycling
had gone viral on so-
cial media.
‘Love Jihad’...
However, the tweets by
Gehlot were quick to
attract responses from
the leaders of the saf-
fron party. Union min-
ister Gajendra Singh
Shekhawat gave a
sharp response to Ge-
hlot’s tweets saying,
“Dear Ashok ji, Love
Jihad is a trap that has
thousands of young
women believing the
marriage is a personal
affair, where later it
turns out it isn’t. Also,
if it is a matter of per-
sonal liberty, then why
are the women not free
to keep their maiden
name or religion?”
Other party leaders
also joined in on the
masquerade.

THE ‘CHAMATKAR’
OF IT!
Remember the 90’s movie
‘Chamatkar’ starring actors
Nasserudding Shah and Shahrukh
Khan, where Shah plays a ghost
who goes about getting his
revenge with the help of mortal
Shahrukh Khan. It appears the
Income Tax Department has
‘learnt’ a thing or two from the
movie and highly motivated thus,
it has taken the reel life to be, quite
literally, real life! While, a thousand
and one employees of income tax
department were transferred in
Rajasthan on Thursday and most
of them would soon be joining
on their ‘new postings’, however
there is a trio who has also been
transferred but for their ‘joining’
they will have to take a special
‘pardon’. This pardon would
be not from the head of their
department, or the ministry, or the
minister or the Prime Minister or
the President, rat her from God
almighty himself! Why? Well,
these trio have passed on to the
heavenly abode long back and yet
their name features prominently
in the list! Sources reveal that
two notice servers and one multi
task staff member, who are long
dead, have been transferred in
the list. In the forty page transfer
list, the ‘departed’ notice servers
are mentioned on numbers 9 and
47 whiole the multi tasking staff
member is mentioned on number
76. It now remains to be seen
how the IT officials handle the
matter, and specially who put the
names of the deceased individuals
in the list. —Vimal Kothari
VIJAYI BHAVA?
For almost a fortnight, several
districts of the state were be-
ing ‘held’ at ‘ransom’ when one
faction of the Gurjar community
decided to be adamant on agita-
tion. Like always, Colonel Kirori
Bainsla, the man heading the
Gurjar Reservation agitation since
its initiation, was at it this time
around as well but there was a
slight change. Owing to Kirori’s
health issues, he gave the reins
to his son - Vijay Bainsla - who
till the last days of the agitation
was adamant that th state govern-
ment wasnt doing enough and
agitation was imminent. There
were times when it appears that
the Bainsla senior-Junior duo
were deliberately stretching the
matter, however, now there is an
interesting word going around in
political circles, which clarifies
why the duo were being steadfast
in holding the agitation. It is said
that Bainsla junior is searching for
a political spot for himself in the
eastern districts of the state and in
the coming days he will make an
announcement. Word is that junior
has been in touch with senior BJP
leaders in New Delhi, one of whom
is in regular contact with the
‘hopeful netaji’. Only time will tell
if Gurjar leader Vijay, can convert
his ‘short-lived netahood’ from the
agitation days, into his electoral
‘vijay’!

Jaipur: Nodal officers
have been activated for
coordination and coop-
eration between pa-
tients, hospitals and
state government for
proper treatment ar-
rangements of corona
patients in private hos-
pitals across the state.
Chief Minister Ashok
Gehlot has appealed to
these officers to fulfill
their important role
with full sensitivity in
order to save the lives
of the people. These of-
ficers will ensure that
the patients do not
have problems during
treatment in private
hospitals.
Gehlot held a detailed
discussion on the role
of officers of all levels
through video confer-
ence with the divisional
commissioners, district
collectors, chief medi-
cal and health officers
and nodal officers from
the Chief Minister’s
residence on Friday
evening. He said that all
the nodal officers
should closely study the
guidelines issued by the
state government, the
central government and
theSupremeCourtfrom
time to time and work
as a bridge between the
patients of Corona and
private hospitals. Ge-
hlot stressed that the
Nodal Officer will assist
Corona infected and
their families in giving
accurate information of
bed availability in pri-
vate hospitals and en-
suring availability of
all necessary resources.
“Officials will also en-
sure that patients are
treated at the rates pre-
scribed by the state gov-
ernment. Also, they will
coordinate with the
physicians and manage-
ment of private hospi-
tals and inform the dis-
trict administration
and the state govern-
ment about their urgent
issues, medicines,
equipment etc. require-
ments,” he said, adding
further, “the presence
of theGovernmentNod-
al Officer in helping pa-
tients will increase the
confidence of the com-
mon man. The condi-
tion of corona infection
is expected to become
more serious in the
coming days. In such a
situation, if the fight
with Corona continues
for a long time, we will
be able to win it with the
trust of the public and

During the two-and-a

it is easier to face any
challenge due to better
coordination between
private and public sec-
tor. “With the help of
private sector, so far
Covid-19 has been well
managed in the state
and patients have been
able to get timely treat-
ment. Due to other rea-
sons including cold
weather and festive sea-
son, positive cases are
increasing and serious
patients are also coming
forward. In view of this,
it is necessary to in-
crease the number of
oxygen and ICU beds,”
he said.
Gehlot said that it has
been the tradition of
Rajasthan to work to-
gether in disaster. “Leg-
islation enacted for
masks and steps such as
prohibition of fire-
works have yielded pos-
itive results. This has
increased awareness
among people. In view
of this, people should be
vigilant and observe
health protocol and if
needed, get timely ex-
amination and treat-
ment done,” he said.
“State government
has appointed nodal of-
ficers for coordination
with private hospitals
so that Covid patients
do not have any incon-
venience in treatment.
Representatives of pri-
vate hospitals can also
coordinate with these
nodal officers and make
them aware of the prob-

feedback, treatment sys-
tems can be further im-
proved,” Gehlot said.
Chief Secretary

there is no shortage of

gor Malev’s wife Ewa,

man. He cannot accept
it. Never recovers.
‘The Winner Stands
Alone’ is a remarkable
story by the Brazilian
writerPaulo Coelho.It was first
published in 2008 under the
Portuguese title ‘O Vencedor
Esta So’. The novel is based on
the Cannes Film Festival. He
explores the completely shal-
low lifestyle of the ‘Superclass’,
the dwindling, botox-fed, rich
people who are sucked into the
unending vortex of glitz, glam-
our and extravaganza. Truth
can be so hollow and distorted.
Amidst the chaotic events at
the world’s largest film festival,
Coelho lays bare the fallacies of
the human soul and shows how
downright materialistic our
generation has become.
The story revolves around
Igor, a psychopathic Russian
executive, who comes to
Cannes in search of his wife
Ewa and her new husband, Ha-
mid. Igor messages Ewa that
he will simply go on killing in-
nocent people unless she de-
cides to meet him. And kill, he
does. He has rare intensity and
cold intelligence. He uses the
skills he learnt as a young sol-
dier fighting wars for his coun-
try. With his unlimited wealth
and precision skills, he kills
one young girl, a Braron, an
aspiring actress and a Director.
Each and every character has
been worked upon diligently
and made into something more
than just a name to be oblivi-
ated from memory. Jasmine,
Gabriela, Savoy, even the pa-
thologist are all such ordinary
people stuck in something ex-
traordinary and out of their
own reach. The tale narrates
the tension within and be-
tween the characters in a 24-
hour period.
Ironically, the insanity of
all the senseless killings
makes Igor realise that, after
all, he doesn’t want his wife
back. The plot exemplifies the
dishonesty and false ideals by
killing for the non-existent
passion. His love is nothing
but an expression of his ego-
mania. In a high profile party,
he finally meets Ewa and Ha-
mid and kills them both. As he
is walking out, he ‘saves’ an
aspiring young model by giv-
ing her lift and dropping her
back safely to her apartment-
back to her lady love! This
young raw model of 19 years is
mature enough to understand
and reject the hollow world of
glamour. She tells her partner-
“The person who made me re-
alise this was a man, a foreign-
er, whom I met tonight at the
party, when I was lost in the
crowd. He said, ‘We’re sur-
rounded by people who are full
of certainties, glories and
conquests. But they cannot en-
joy. They’re all at the peak of
their careers and the inevita-
ble descent frightens them.
They’ve conquered worlds
and now fear of change
terrifies them. They are
caught in the vicious cyclic
trap of same parties, same
people, same talks. Insecuri-
ties have replaced passion’.”
Paulo Coelho’s, ‘The Win-
ner Stands Alone’, is the
most graphic and revealing
portrait of our era’s pa-
thology. All are infected
in some way, by the
‘rich and famous’
syndrome. Exhila-
rating & titillating,
this book achieves

Announced Friday, just before Ms Gandhi leaves for Goa to escape Delhi pollution, the appoint- ments are being seen as a move to ward off further public embarrassment - such as that caused by Mr Sibal’s interview to the Indian Express or the letter by 23 leaders challenging the Gandhi family’s control. The committee on economic affairs includes former Finance Minister P Chidambaram. The second committee (on foreign affairs) has both Anand Sharma and Shashi Tharoor, and Ghulam Nabi Azad and Veerappa Moily have been named to the third. Ambala: Haryana health minister, 67-year-old and a diabetic, Anil Vij was administered a trial dose of Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin on Friday. He attended office two hours after vaccina- tion. “It is a matter of pride for every Indian that Bharat Biotech is coming up with an indigenous vaccine for Covid-19. I volunteered to become one of the participants for the third phase trial so that people shed their fears and come forward to volunteer,” said Vij. Anil Vij gets covaxin shot ‘LOVE JIHAD’ INVENTED BY BJP TO DIVIDE COUNTRY: GEHLOT Kartikey Dev Singh Jaipur: Known for his immaculate timing when it comes to open- ing a front against the rival camp, senior Con- gress leader and Ra- jasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Friday cornered the Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP), in his now famous style of ver- bal ‘war’, when he al- leged that “Love Jihad” is a word manufactured by the BJP to divide the nation and disturb com- munal harmony. With BJP govern- ments in Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Madhya Pradesh saying that they are considering en- actment of laws to curb such marriages, Gehlot hit back strongly at what he considers a “ploy to divide people”. Gehlot, who often uses social media plat- form to take on the saf- fron party, took to twit- ter and said that mar- riage is a personal deci- sion and the BJP is putting curbs on it. “Love Jihad is a word manufactured by the BJP to divide the nation and disturb communal harmony. Marriage is a matter of personal lib- erty, bringing a law to curb it is completely un- constitutional and it will not stand in any court of law. Jihad has no place in love,” Ge- hlot tweeted. “They are creating an environment in the nation where consent- ing adults would be at the mercy of state pow- er. Marriage is a per- sonal decision and they are putting curbs on it, which is like snatching away per- sonal liberty,” he said in another tweet. Gehlot said it seemed to be a “ploy to disrupt communal harmony, fuel social conflict and disregard constitution- al provisions like the state not discriminat- ing against citizens on any ground”. All the occupants of the SUV died in the crash and several others have been injured. The ac- cident occured around 11.45pm on Thursday on the Prayagraj-Lucknow highway near Deshraj Inara village. Visuals from the accident show a crumpled Mahindra Bolero being pulled out from the back of the truck. Pratapgarh Super- intendent of Police (SP) Anurag Arya said the truck had been parked at the side of the highway due to a punctured tyre when the SUV rammed it from behind in the dead of the night. Half of the car was pulled out in a mangled state from under the truck later by police officials, he said. All victims were return- ing home to their village in Kunda in the district after attending a wedding in Nawabganj, the police official said, adding that all help has been assured to the families of the victims. The trading com- munity expected anoth- er extension which has not come their way now. Bhagotia has decided to himself monitor the recovery of huge pend- ing amount. He said, “People have not sub- mitted their C-forms despite getting suffi- cient time. In fact, in some cases even C- forms for FY 2009-2010 are due.” It is noteworthy that C form is used for the sales done on conces- sional VAT rates and it is made available to seller by the purchaser of the goods on conces- sional price. Bhagotia has in- structed his depart- ment to start recover- ing difference between normal and concession- al rates. According to SGST department right now only cases of FY 2019-10 will be taken for consid- eration and it is not pur- suing cases of FY 2015- 16, 2016-17 and the first quarter of 2017-18. Interesting- ly, Singh’s meeting with Gehlot is being touted as a ‘change of heart’ for the former minister who, it is said, will be heading back in the Gehlot Cabinet in next expansion, and since he has realised and lernt that he will have to work under Ge- hlot’s ‘supervision’, Singh preferred to speak to Gehlot. Raising the reservation demand, Singh said that former Vajpayee government granted OBC quota to Jats in 1999 but the people of Bharatpur and Dhol- pur were deprived of it. “For this, we fought a long battle and agitat- ed. Three years ago, we got success and the sur- vey was done again and quota to Jats of Dhol- pur and Bharatpur was given in state. It is our demand from the state government that a rec- ommendation be sent to Centre to provide OBC quota to Jats of both the districts in centre,” he said. Editor: Anita Hada Sangwan responsible for selection of news under the PRB Act he first drug against HIV brought dying patients back from the brink. Butasexciteddoctorsraced to get the miracle drug to new patients, the miracle melted away. In each and every patient, the drug only worked only for a while. It turned out the drug was very good at killing the virus, but the virus was even better at evolving re- sistance to the drug. A spontaneous mutation in the virus’ genetic material prevented the drug from doing its work, and so the mutant viruses were able to replicate wildly despite the drug, making the pa- tients sick again. It took another decade before sci- entists found evolution- proof therapies. Could the same thing happen to a COVID-19 vac- cine?Couldavaccinethatis safe and effective in initial trials go on to fail because thevirusevolvesitswayout of trouble? As evolutionary microbiologists who have studied a poultry virus that has evolved resistance to two different vaccines, we know such an outcome is possible. We also think we know what it takes to stop it. COVID-19 vaccines could fail – but if they have cer- tain properties, they won’t. HISTORY OF VACCINE RESISTANCE For the most part, human- ity has been lucky: Most human vaccines have not been undermined by mi- crobial evolution. For instance, the small- pox virus was eradicated because it never found a way to evolve around the smallpox vaccine, and no strain of the measles virus haseverarisenthatcanbeat the immunity triggered by the measles vaccine. But there is one excep- tion.Abacteriumthatcaus- es pneumonia managed to evolve resistance against a vaccine. Developing and re- placing that vaccine with another was expensive and time-consuming, with sev- en years between the initial emergence of resistant strains and the licensing of the new vaccine. There haven’t been other failures for human vac- cines yet, but there are hints that viruses, bacteria and parasites can evolve or are evolving in response to vaccination. Escape mu- tants that are able to evade vaccine-induced immunity are regularly seen in the microbes that cause hepa- titis B and pertussis. For such human diseas- es as malaria, trypanoso- miasis, influenza and AIDS, vaccines have been hard or impossible to de- velop because the microbes that cause those diseases evolve so fast. In agricul- tural settings, animal vac- cines are frequently under- mined by viral evolution. Depending on how the COVID-19 virus evolves, the vaccines could become less effective. Volanthe- vist/Getty Images WHAT WOULD IT LOOK LIKE? If SARS-CoV-2 evolves in response to a COVID vac- cine, there are several di- rections it could take. The most obvious is what hap- pens with the flu virus. Im- munity works when anti- bodies or immune cells bind to molecules on the surface of the virus. If mu- tations in those molecules on the surface of the virus change, antibodies can’t grab on to them as tightly and the virus is able to es- cape. This process explains why the seasonal flu vac- cine needs updating each year. If this happens, a COVID vaccine would need frequent updating. But evolution might head off in other direc- tions. It would be better for human health, for exam- ple, if the virus evolves a stealth mode, perhaps by reproducing slowly or hid- ing in organs where immu- nity is less active. Many pathogens that cause bare- ly noticeable chronic infec- tions have taken this tack. They avoid detection be- cause they do not cause acute disease. A more dangerous ave- nue would be if the virus evolved a way to replicate more quickly than the im- munity generated by the vaccine. Another strategy would be for the virus to target the immune system and dampen vaccine-in- duced immunity. Virus evolution could undermine a COVID-19 vaccine! COVID-19 WORRIES JOLT DELHI INTO ACTION ven as there are encouraging reports on the development of Covid-19 vaccine, the viruscontinuestocauseconcerninIndia. After a surge in fresh cases, Delhi had to cut down on number of invitees at wed- dings and other gatherings from 200 to 50, enhance finefornotwearingmasksfromRs500toRs2000and launch a house-to-house survey for new cases. Peo- ple, especially the elderly, have been advised to stay indoors. These steps have been initiated after the Delhi High Court pulled up the Aam Aadmi Party governmentfornotimposingtimelycurbsevenafter seeing the situation turning bad since November 1. Situation in the national capital has also been found worrying by Dr. V.K. Paul of Niti Ayog. Delhi is not alone in dealing with the Covid cri- sis. Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh re-introduced night curfew in some of the affected cities in view of the rising cases of new infections. After Ahmedabad, night curfew was imposed in Rajkot, Surat and Vadodara. Night curfew will be in force in Bhopal, Indore, Gwalior, Ratlam and Vidisha cities of Madhya Pradesh. Under the circumstances, the BJP’s move to po- liticise the Chhath festival against the AAP gov- ernment with an eye on Bihari votes was highly condemnable. The party backed out after the high court dismissed a petition seeking permission for Chhath puja. Now it is the turn of the Congress to be critical of the hefty Rs 2000 fine for not wearing a mask. Neither BJP nor the Congress thought it fit to rise above politics to fight the pandemic. E IN-DEPTH BENGAL AND VIOLENCE DIFFICULT TO SEPARATE iolence has been the hallmark of West Bengal politics from the days of the Naxalite movement, also known as peas- ant revolt of 1967. It only exacerbated under the Communist government of Jyoti Basu neither doing much for the peasantry, nor for Bengal’s development. Mohalla- level groups of toughies controlled all activity and trade unions made it difficult for industry to survive. The temperamental Mamata Banerjee entered the scene riding on the Ma, Manush and Maati slogan. Nandigram violence, controversy over Singur, al- lotment of land to Tata Motors at Singur, power cuts helped. Killings, both political and communal, continued even after she became chief minister of the state. So much so that the Bharatiya Janata Party is entering the poll fray on the twin planks of political killings under Mamata Banerjee’s gov- ernment and the rise of Islamism in the state. Six persons dying in a plastic factory blast in Malda, which the BJP claims was a bomb-making unit, gave the party the ammo to enhance its fire- power before the assembly elections. The party is now demanding a probe by the National Investiga- tion Agency while Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar asked Mamata Banerjee to contain illegal bomb- making. Mamata joined the slugfest with the re- mark that the issue should not be politicised. When elections are closed at hand, every death, every blast will get politicized. Even if a BJP hood- lum is involved in violence, the blame will be put at TMC’s door. The effort from all sides should be to eschew violence. With the BJP desperate to win Bengal, and the TMC on the defensive, a bitter tus- sle is on the cards. V he human mechanism is a composite of the physical body – an accumulation of food consumed, the mental body – the software and memory part that makes in- dividuals function in spe- cific ways, and the energy body – the fundamental upon which these two are housed. What is beyond this is non-physical. The compulsive and cyclical nature of the body and mind render themselves a barrier for higher possibilities. Tantra is to go beyond, so that compul- siveness of the body and mind does not keep us trapped in our limitations. Tantra essentially means “technique” or “tech- nology.” Tantra is about learn- ing to use the body, not as one- self, but as a stepping-stone to deliver this Being to the high- est possible dimension. BLOWING FROM THE TOP Tantra is not about unbri- dled sexuality, as assumed by many. Sexuality is a fun- damental instinct instilled in our bodies to ensure the species perpetuates itself. This is a basic requirement. At the same time, one must know the limitations beyond which it will not carry us. It is only on recognising the limitations and the longing to touch other dimensions enters, that Yoga and Tantra become relevant. Unlike sexuality, which tends to find release at the low- er level of the energy system, Tantra is about building our energies to the fountain-head of the uppermost dimension of the energy system, so that one’s energies spill from the top. Of the different energy manifesta- tions in the body – referred to as the 114 chakras – spilling from the top three is consid- ered the highest. If you have to build up to this, every basic in- stinct, including the sexual in- stinct, emotions, intellect, and survival process must be used to build and hype the energy system. The intention is to de- ploy all instincts for which a certain amount of energy is dedicated in the body. If one goes into an actual sexual act, the build-up and the purpose of it will be lost. Sexual needs can be ful- filled by forming relation- ships for that purpose, ei- ther within or outside the fold. But using the spiritual process to fulfill sexual com- pulsions is reprehensible and irresponsible. It can lead to various levels of loss because the tantric process is not only used for the indi- vidual’s spiritual growth, but also to create an ener- getic space to support other possibilities that bring well- being to many. YOU DON’T HAVE TO HUFF AND PUFF The Guru-shishya relation- ship is to deliver the shishya to a higher dimension of consciousness, not trap one into the compulsive nature of sexuality. Above all, this sacred relationship is defi- nitely orgasmic, but not sex- ual. I am talking about up- grading your technology. You don’t have to huff and puff to get into an orgasmic state. If you sit with your eyes closed, you can drip with orgasms in every cell of your body. Those who have failed to achieve an orgasmic state of existence will associ- ate an ecstatic state with sexuality because that’s probably the highest level of experience they have known. People always try to take recourse in the Krishna-Gopi relationship. As the legend goes, Krishna gave an orgas- mic experience to 16,000 wom- en simultaneously. This can- not happen with sexual un- ion. A shishya can establish a very intimate relationship with a Guru. Intimacy is gen- erally understood only as two bodies touching. The body is not intimate enough for one who is on the spiritual path. The physical body is an accu- mulation from outside, so in the Tantric and Yogic sys- tems, the body is never con- sidered an intimate part of you. Only when energies meet and mingle and a Guru’s ener- gies overwhelm and override the shishya’s energies, it leads to an orgasmic experi- ence – a union, but not of the sexual kind. If all you want is to do a meditation or spiritual prac- tice, you don’t really need a Guru. The Guru is here es- sentially to overwhelm you with nameless ecstasies. Tantra is a technology of lib- eration, not enslavement. Owing to Kirori’s health issues, he gave the reins to his son - Vijay Bainsla - who till the last days of the agitation was adamant that th state govern- ment wasnt doing enough and agitation was imminent. There were times when it appears that the Bainsla senior-Junior duo were deliberately stretching the matter, however, now there is an interesting word going around in political circles, which clarifies why the duo were being steadfast in holding the agitation. It is said that Bainsla junior is searching for a political spot for himself in the eastern districts of the state and in the coming days he will make an announcement. Word is that junior has been in touch with senior BJP leaders in New Delhi, one of whom is in regular contact with the ‘hopeful netaji’. CM’s views and com- ments invited sharp re- actions from BJP lead- ers including union minister Gajendra Sin- gh Shekhawat. Shekha- wat questioned will not the deception in the name of love, changing name and conversion be called Love Jihad? He tweeted asking CM and said that if marriage is a matter of personal freedom then why are women not free to retain their maiden name and religion. BJP state president Satish Poonia too hit out at Gehlot’s remarks, saying that it reflects his petty vote bank men- tality. “It is hard to be- lieve that CM will get so rattled by the plight of the Congress nation- wide. We all know that marriage in the tradi- tion of India is a reli- gious and socially rec- ognised rites and is not limited only to the free- dom of the individual,” Poonia said. Deputy leader of op- position Rajendra Rathore said that Con- gress has always fol- lowed the policy of ap- peasement and there- fore it is being sidelined. Rathore questioned whether it is justifiable to forcefully convert the religion of a woman. “Forcing a young wom- an to convert to mar- riage .. Isn’t it like snatching personal free- dom?” he questioned, while alleging that forced conversions hap- pen in the name of love and marriage. YOUR DAYHoroscope by Saurabbh Sachdeva gor Malev’s wife Ewa, leaves him for another man. He cannot accept it. Never recovers. ‘The Winner Stands Alone’ is a remarkable story by the Brazilian writerPaulo Coelho. It was first published in 2008 under the Portuguese title ‘O Vencedor Esta So’. The novel is based on the Cannes Film Festival. He explores the completely shal- low lifestyle of the ‘Superclass’, the dwindling, botox-fed, rich people who are sucked into the unending vortex of glitz, glam- our and extravaganza. Truth can be so hollow and distorted. Amidst the chaotic events at the world’s largest film festival, Coelho lays bare the fallacies of the human soul and shows how downright materialistic our generation has become. The story revolves around Igor, a psychopathic Russian executive, who comes to Cannes in search of his wife Ewa and her new husband, Ha- mid. Igor messages Ewa that he will simply go on killing in- nocent people unless she de- cides to meet him. And kill, he does. He has rare intensity and cold intelligence. He uses the skills he learnt as a young sol- dier fighting wars for his coun- try. With his unlimited wealth and precision skills, he kills one young girl, a Braron, an aspiring actress and a Director. Each and every character has been worked upon diligently and made into something more than just a name to be oblivi- ated from memory. Jasmine, Gabriela, Savoy, even the pa- thologist are all such ordinary people stuck in something ex- traordinary and out of their own reach. The tale narrates the tension within and be- tween the characters in a 24- hour period. Ironically, the insanity of all the senseless killings makes Igor realise that, after all, he doesn’t want his wife back. The plot exemplifies the dishonesty and false ideals by killing for the non-existent passion. His love is nothing but an expression of his ego- mania. In a high profile party, he finally meets Ewa and Ha- mid and kills them both. As he is walking out, he ‘saves’ an aspiring young model by giv- ing her lift and dropping her back safely to her apartment- back to her lady love! This young raw model of 19 years is mature enough to understand and reject the hollow world of glamour. She tells her partner- “The person who made me re- alise this was a man, a foreign- er, whom I met tonight at the party, when I was lost in the crowd. He said, ‘We’re sur- rounded by people who are full of certainties, glories and conquests. But they cannot en- joy. They’re all at the peak of their careers and the inevita- ble descent frightens them. They’ve conquered worlds and now fear of change terrifies them. They are caught in the vicious cyclic trap of same parties, same people, same talks. Insecuri- ties have replaced passion’.” Paulo Coelho’s, ‘The Win- ner Stands Alone’, is the most graphic and revealing portrait of our era’s pa- thology. All are infected in some way, by the ‘rich and famous’ syndrome. Exhila- rating & titillating, this book achieves so much in limit- ed time and words. It leaves us thinking a n d ques- tion- i n g t h e v a l u e s of the world that we are ac- tually liv- ing in. I started cooking at a very early age. During my school days, I loved to cook for my family. Now, I practice new reci- pes and taste the prepared food. Dif- ferent curries are my speciality. So somehow it was clear from the mo- ment I learned to cook thatIwillalwayscontinue experimenting with it. I especially love to cook Kebabs,BiryanisandCur- ries and that too on a wood fire or a Sigri. I don’t prefer cook- ing on the Gas. Cooking is fun, you can do it with friends andit’slikeaprojectwith- out pressure. I am not a chef but I am confident to serveanyauthenticprepa- ration. Seeing how different veggies, meat and spices combine to give that gor- geous flavour, makes you happy.
