He added that everyone involved
in the Gyanvapi mosque dispute
should sit together and resolve
it with mutual agreement. If
not, then the decision of the
court should be accepted by all
considering the justice system
as sacred and supreme”.
Two points need to be made
here. One, even in the Ram
Janmbhoomi case, dialogue
formed part of the resolution
process before the sacred justice
system pronounced its verdict.
The second point is about Shiv-
ling which, in the present case,
pertains to Gyanvapi mosque.
Will the litigating Hindus stop
raising the issue of Lord Krish-
na’s birthplace at Mathura
where no mention of Lord Shi-
va’s idol has been made yet. Or,
will the Hindu groups stop
claiming Qutub Minar as their
religious place? No, they can’t
be stopped. And the justice sys-
tem knows what should be done.
O
as the Central
Government lost
its plot in Kash-
mir where eight
targeted killings
in 27 days have instilled panic
in the Pandit community?
The fast-deteriorating situa-
tion has caused such fear that
the minority community is
now bent on leaving the Val-
ley as soon as possible. Nearly
half of the 350 migrants have
already moved to Jammu.
They have also started pro-
tests against the govern-
ment’sfailuretoprotectthem.
The BJP government may
find it unpalatable and Vivek
Agnihotri of The Kashmir
Files fame may disagree, but
theangrymigrantsareclaim-
ing the situation to be worse
than in the Nineties and have
warned of an exodus. That
will be a severe blow to the
government’s scheme to re-
settle Pandits in the Valley.
The decision to leave the Val-
ley was taken after terrorists
shot dead Vijay Kumar, man-
ager of a bank located in
south Kashmir.
There is an obvious Paki-
stani hand behind this up-
surge in the killings. The ISI-
trained ultras have adopted
the new tactic of identifying
and then eliminating the soft
targets generally using small
firearms. Indian intelligence
and police agencies’ failure
lies in their inability to pre-
vent these dastardly acts. It is
this lack of intelligence that
has riled the migrants and is
threatening to widen the de-
mographic imbalance.
Sensing the gravity of the
situation, Union Home Min-
ister Amit Shah held a high-
level security review meeting
with National Security Advi-
sor Ajit Doval, RAW chief
Samant Goel, head of Intelli-
gence Bureau Arvind Kumar
and other officials. A firm
response is needed to deter
Pakistan from its jihadi de-
signs in the Union Territory

On May 25, the killing of 21
people, including 19 children,
in a primary school in Uvalde
city of Texas has shocked the
wholeof America.Thisheart-
wrenching incident of child
massacre has given rise to
new discussions for the Biden
administration to make con-
certed efforts towards gun
control at the federal level.
Actually America’s 2nd
Constitutional Amendment
(15Dec.1791)enshrinedtoown
a gun as a right to citizens.
Amendment reads: “A well
regulatedMilitia,beingneces-
sary to the security of a Free
State, the right of the people
to keep and bear Arms, shall
not be infringed.” Therefore,
citizens should not be denied
possession of arms. But the
changing scenario has made
it extraneous by eliminating
the concept of regulated citi-
zen. With more than 400 mil-
lion of firearms USA tops the
worldintermsof gunaverage
per capita. The United States,
with only 5 percent of the
world’s population, owns 48
percent of the world’s guns.
That is 89 percent of Ameri-
can have firearms.
According to the Gun Vio-
lence Archive a record 18 mil-
lion guns were purchased in
2020. (40 pct. Purchaser are
women) This fascination of
gunsisnowposingthebiggest
challenge. According to the
report of the Centers for Dis-
ease Control and Prevention’s
forNationalCanterforHealth
Statistics 44,826 people died in
the 2021 and the country suf-
fered $ 300 billion in damage
duetogunviolence.Inthefirst
five months of 2022 there have
been more than 17,499 deaths
in mass shooting incidents
that is 119 deaths per day
.
The tragic 10 person died
and 23 people were injured in
the mass shooting incident in
the Buffalo Super Market and
in subway of NY City in a
month; shook the whole of
America. To stop such vio-
lence, an emergency declared
in New York in July last year,
the state government had
made a provision of spending
Rs1038croreSothatyouthcan
be freed from depression by
creatingemploymentopportu-
nities and they should leave
thepathof diversion-violence.
At the federal level, President
Biden directed the Justice De-
partment to prepare an action
plan on Ghost Gun (Home
MadeGun)andadrafton“Red
Flag Law” to deal with gun
violence. A plan of spending
Rs 37,320 crore for the preven-
tion of gun violence; along
with it was also announced to
send a strike force to effective-
ly curb gun smugglers across
the country
. But the gun fasci-
nation of American citizens
thwarted all efforts of the
Biden administration.
According to the Centre for
Homeland Defence and Secu-
rity, there have been a huge
increaseinincidentsof shoot-
ings in schools which is very
worrying. In the 2021, there
have been 222 incidents, so far
this year there have been 136
incidents in which 27 inno-
cent deaths have occurred.
The recent incident of child
carnage has shocked the
whole of America. President
Biden said in his condolence
message- “To lose a child is
like having a piece of your
soul ripped away
.” He quoted
scripture: “The Lord is near
to the broken-hearted and
saves the crushed in spirit.”
In such situation only the
National Rifle Association (a
strong lobbying organization)
should be expected to play its
positive role in getting rid of
the horrific violence. Notably
theNRAsloganis“Gunsdon’t
kill anyone, people kill each
other.” More than 5 million
citizensareactivemembersof
this association and ever-in-
creasing number is fretting.
According to statistics, NRA
spends more than Rs 1900
crore in lobbying, which is
many times more than gun
controladvocacygroupswhich
thwart the overall efforts of
governments. That’s why the
President said helplessly- “As
a nation, we have to ask, when
in God’s name are we going to
stand up to the gun lobby
.
Undoubtedly gun violence
has inflicted deep wounds on
American society and tar-
nished America’s image in-
ternationally. That’s why
Biden had said- “Gun vio-
lence is an epidemic, an in-
ternational embarrassment
for America, more a public
health crisis than a gun cri-
sis.” (8 April 2021). Whatever,
governments and elite citi-
zens should make concerted
efforts to stop gun violence.
The fascination of Indian
youth towards illegal weapons
is also scaring. Possessing il-
legal arms and posting pics
with weapons on social media
has become the choice of most
of the youth. They consider
gangster as their ideal. Inci-
dents of firing in wedding cer-
emonies have become very
common among youth. News

ation in states. E.g. Vikas

the provision of life imprison-
ment has been made in some

New Delhi: The
Bharatiya Janata Party
had three Muslim mem-
bers in the Rajya Sabha.
This time all three have
bid farewell and none of
them will be making a
comeback. Till the last
day of filing nomina-
tions on Tuesday, BJP
declared candidates for
22 seats and no Muslim
candidate is named in it.
In this way
, the BJP will
have one hundred mem-
bers in the Rajya Sabha,
in which there will not
beasingleMuslimmem-
ber.TheBJPalreadyhas
303 MPs in the Lok Sab-
ha, out of which there is
notasingleMuslim.The
BJP did not field any
Muslim candidate even
in the recently held Ut-
tar Pradesh assembly
elections.
However, senior jour-
nalist and former minis-
ter MJ Akbar was a Ra-
jya Sabha MP from Mad-
hya Pradesh. He was
caught in the charge of
‘Me Too’. Several wom-
en journalists accused
him of sexual harass-
ment, after which he
had to leave the ministe-
rial post. Then it seemed
that again he would not
be able to get the mem-
bership of Rajya Sabha.
Similar was not the case
with Mukhtar Abbas
Naqvi. Everyone was as-
suming that he is a min-
ister at the Center and
the Muslim face of BJP
in national politics, so
he will return to the Up-
per House. He is a Rajya
Sabha MP from
Jharkhand. But this
time he too was not giv-
en ticket by the party
. In
his place, the party has
given ticket to Aditya
Sahu in Jharkhand.
It is being said that
Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi
will contest the by-elec-
tion from his traditional
Rampur Lok Sabha seat.
He has been a one-time
MP from this seat. The
seat fell vacant after the
resignation of Sama-
jwadi Party’s Azam
Khan. For the past few
days, Azam Khan has
been expressing dis-
pleasure with his party
- Samajwadi Party
. It is
believed that due to this
public outrage, he was
released from jail after
27 months. Informed
sources say that he can
help the BJP candidate.
If he does not contest
anyone from his family,
then automatically BJP
will be helped. The BSP
has already said that it
will not contest the by-
polls. So, it is possible
that with the help of
Azam Khan, Naqvi-
BJP’s first Muslim MP -
reaches the Lok Sabha.
The third Muslim MP
was Syed Zafar Islam.
He became a Rajya Sab-
ha MP from Uttar
Pradesh in the by-elec-
tion two years ago.
There was a lot of dis-
cussion in Madhya
Pradesh about his role
in bringing Jyotiradi-
tya Scindia closer to the
BJP and toppling the
Congress government.
Then it was believed
that he would get one
more term. He is origi-
nally from Jharkhand
and is engaged in some
political activities there
these days, due to which
there was talk of him
becoming a Rajya Sab-
ha MP from Jharkhand.
But it didn’t happen. In
this way, the three Mus-
lim MPs of the BJP in
the Rajya Sabha were
bid farewell.

After veteran leader
Ghulam Nabi Azad was
refused the Rajya Sabha
nomination, Congress
interim president Sonia
Gandhi tried to placate
him by offering him the
number two position in
the party. Sources said
the move has failed to
pacify Azad, who re-
fused to take the offer.
According to sources
after Sonia Gandhi's
phone call on Sunday to
Azad both met and dis-
cussed issues regard-
ing the party.
Sources said Azad
was offered the post in
the organisation which
could be number two in
party hierarchy, but the
veteran leader refused
to accept it.
Azad who was de-
nied Rajya Sabha berth
at the last moment is
upset with the party af-
fairs, and has not
shown any interest in
the organisation and
reportedly told Sonia
Gandhi that “new peo-
ple should work as it is
a generational shift in
the party”.
Azad and his support-
ers are also upset with
the way party is func-
tioning in JK and in
recent statewise 'Chin-
tan Shivir' neither Azad
nor his supporters par-
ticipated. This clearly
showed that all is not
well. His supporters
want him to be the face
of the party in the state.
Congress in its ten-
candidate list for the Ra-
jya Sabha denied Anand
Sharma and Azad the
berth and instead nomi-
nated Pratapgarhi.
SoniaGandhireached
out to Ghulam Nabi
Azad and sources said
the move was an effort
to douse the fire and cull
any discontent. Azad
was one of the prime
movers of the G-23.
Tension is also sim-
mering in the party
units in Chhattisgarh
and Rajasthan over out-
siders being nominated
for the Upper House.
The party leaders are
questioning the move,
but the Chief Ministers
have not said anything
against the party's
choice of candidates.
Both states will go to
polls next year.

after a series of tar-

be moved out of the

to safer locations.
Official also said the
recent escalation in
targeted terrorist vio-

any change in plans for

is scheduled from June

The assertion comes
in the wake of a spate
of terror incidents
which included target-

One of the victim
was Rahul Bhat.
Bhat was a Kash-

New Delhi (ANI): Ex-
ternal affairs minister
S Jaishankar on Thurs-
day said India was not
sitting on the fence but
was rather entitled to
its own opinion when it
came to foreign policy.
Just because its take on
global issues was not
agreeable to others, did
not mean India was sit-
ting on the fence, the
minister said.
“I am not sitting on
the fence just because I
don’t agree with you. It
means I am sitting on
my ground,” Jais-
hankar said at
GLOBESEC 2022 Brati-
slava Forum, where he
was talking on the top-
ic, ‘Taking friendship to
the next level: Allies in
the Indo-Pacific’. He
was questioned on In-
dia’s position on the
world stage, and that
non-alignment could
not always be a plausi-
ble option for a world
leader. The statement
came when foreign min-
ister was asked if sit-
ting on fence was an
option for India as an
emerging world leader,
especially with respect
to ongoing Russia-
Ukraine war. India has
still not openly con-
demned Russian inva-
sion of its eastern
neighbour that com-
pleted 100 days since its
launch on Feb 24. Rus-
sianPresidentVladimir
Putin has justified the
invasion as a “special
operation”. Jaishankar
said the world could no
longer be “Eurocen-
tric”, and that Europe
needed to shun that
mindset. “World is

New Delhi (ANI): PM
Narendra Modi on
Thursday praised Sri
Guru Teg Bahadur for
serving as a shield that
protected India’s faith
and culture from the
brutal assault launched
on it by Mughal emper-
or Aurangzeb.
In an unprecedented
address to the nation
from the Red Fort on the
400th Parkash Purab of
the ninth Sikh Guru,
the PM also defended
the Citizenship Amend-
ment Act (CAA), calling
it a necessary measure
to provide relief and se-
curity to the Sikhs and
Hindus facing religious
persecution in neigh-
bouring countries.
The PM also referred
to Aurangzeb’s order, is-
sued from the Red Fort,
to behead the Sikh
Guru after he had re-
fused to convert to Is-
lam. Theme of religious
persecution also led
Modi to bow before
Guru Granth Saheb.
Jaishankar said the country’s foreign policy was not
based on accepting a “construct” that it had to side with
a power axis, or it belonged to another camp if it did
not side with one. “I (India) am one-fifth of the world’s
population. I am what, today the 5th or 6th largest
economy in the world. Forget the history and civilisation
bit; everybody knows that. I feel I am entitled to have my
own side. I am entitled to weigh my own interests, and
make my own choices. My choices will not be cynical.
They will be a balance of my values,” he added.

SC rules Arya Samaj’s marriage certificate invalid
New Delhi: Arya Samaj is a Hindu reformist
organization and was established by Swami
Dayanand Saraswati in 1875. A bench of
Justices Ajay Rastogi and BV Nagarathna
said that the work and jurisdiction of Arya
Samaj is not to issue marriage certificates.
“Only competent authorities can issue mar-
riage certificates. Bring the original certifi-
cate before the court,” the bench said. The
court’s observations come in a case related
to a love marriage in Madhya Pradesh. The
girl’s family members had lodged an FIR
against the young man accusing him of kid-
napping and raping their daughter, stating
that she was a minor. The young man, in his
petition, had said that the girl was an adult
and that she had decided to get married of
her own free will and right. The marriage
took place in Arya Samaj Mandir.

First India Bureau
Lucknow: Seven min-
isters in the Yogi Adi-
tyanath government,
who are not yet mem-
bers of the state legis-
lature, will now take
the Vidhan Parishad
route to get elected.
Thirteen seats to the
Vidhan Parishad are
falling vacant and elec-
tions are to be held on
June 20.
The BJP, on its
strength in the Uttar
Pradesh Assembly, can
safely send nine mem-
bers while the Sama-
jwadi pary (SP) can
send four members.
The BJP ministers who
need to get elected to
the Upper House, in-
clude deputy Chief
Minister Keshav Mau-
rya (who retains his
position despite losing
the Assembly election),
Bhupendra Chaudhary,
Narendra Kashyap,
JPS Rathore, Jaswant
Singh Saini, Danish
Azad Ansari and Daya
Shankar Mishra aka
Dayalu.
Apart from these sev-
en, the party has a long
list of aspirants for the
remaining two seats,
including veteran lead-
er Shatrudha Prakash,
who recently left the
Samajwadi Party to
join the BJP.
The Samajwadi Par-
ty, which has a number
of members retiring
from the Vidhan Pari-
shad next month, is fac-
ing a piquant situation
since the Suheldev
Bhartiya Samaj Party
(SBSP) president Om
Prakash Rajbhar is de-
manding his share this
time.
Rajbhar wants a seat
for his son Arvind Ra-
jbhar who lost the As-
sembly polls.
There is also pres-
sure on SP president
Akhilesh Yadav to
nominate Krishna Pa-
tel, who heads the Apna
Dal (K) and had lost the
Assembly polls.
Gyanendra Kumar Shukla
Lucknow: After the
resounding success in
the recently concluded
assembly polls, BJP is
now gearing up to re-
ward the senior office
bearers of its organisa-
tion with the member-
ship of the Upper House
of the legislature in re-
turn for their hard
work. In fact, through
this step, the party
think-tank apparently
has a well-thought-out
plan to deliver the mes-
sage to all the office
bearers of the organiza-
tionthatwhoeverworks
diligently while being
dedicated to the party
will definitely be re-
warded with a suitable
post.
It is worth noting that
the term of the Legisla-
tive Council of Deputy
CM Keshav Prasad
Maurya, who recently
lost the assembly elec-
tion from Sirathu seat,
is also ending, so it is
pertinent for him to get
the membership of the
Upper House. Along
with him, JPS Rathore,
Dayashankar Mishra
aka Dayalu, Narendra
Kashyap,JaswantSaini,
Bhupendra Chaudhary
and Danish Azad will
also be made MLCs. Be-
cause all these minis-
ters of the Yogi govern-
ment are not yet mem-
bers of any house and
under the obligation of
constitutional provi-
sions, it is inevitable for
all of them to be a part
of the legislature with-
in six months of hold-
ing the post of minister.
Apart from these,
BJP strategists are also
going to ensure mem-
bership of the Upper
House to those office
bearers of the organisa-
tion, who played an im-
portant role in the par-
ty’s electoral victory.
The electoral process is
going on for the thir-
teen seats falling vacant
in the UP Legislative
Council. In terms of the
strength of the mem-
bers in the assembly,
the BJP with 273 MLAs
will easily secure nine
seats, while the SP alli-
ance can get four seats.
Apart from this, there
is scope for adjusting
the BJP’s favorite lead-
ers in those six seats of
the council which are to
be nominated by the
Governor. If BJP’s high-
ly placed sources are to
be believed, then the of-
fice bearers of the or-
ganisation who are
frontrunners for the
membership of the
council include Mahesh
Srivastava, president of
Kashi region of BJP;
Dharmendra Singh
Sainthwar of Gorakh-
pur; Manvendra Singh
of Kanpur-Braj region;
Mohit Beniwal of West
region and Shesh-
narayan Mishra of
Awadh region.
Organisation office
bearers Priyanka
Rawat and Ranjana Up-
adhyay can also be
made part of the Upper
House to ensure the
participation of wom-
en. Political observers
insist that party func-
tionaries have contrib-
uted a lot in the series
of successes of BJP,
now by increasing
their morale, all the
partymen are being
prepared to mobilize
with full vigor for Mis-
sion-2024.

the contractor ordered
the bulldozer operator

Before he could get up,
the bulldozer pulled

Rohtash succumbed
to injuries 10 days after
the incident. Four peo-

t was a pleasant summer morn-
ing in this little town of Uvalde
in Texas, USA. Parents were af-
fectionately readying their little
darlings for school hugging and
kissing them as those 7-year-
olds sauntered to their buses.
Nineteen among them were waving
their last goodbyes, with faces pressed
gleefully against the window glasses.
Yes, the last goodbyes, because two
hours later a sleepy-eyed, long-haired
18-year-old senior student burst into
their classroom and started firing at
them and their two teachers. He fired
a total of 150 bullets from two Assault
Rifles procured off the rack on his
last birthday. The eerie, split-second
silence that ensued must have pierced
millions of souls around the world.
This lull was soon shattered by holler-
ing voices and horrifying screams all
around. The police arrived within five
minutes after the first call by a teacher.
But for intriguing reasons steeped in
cowardice and incompetence, the 19
Police officers let the lone gunman fire
shots for another hour, killing and in-
juring the terrified 4th graders and
teachers, scampering around for a hid-
ing place. By the time they gunned
down the killer an hour later, 21 joyous
families had been devastated with 17
injured fighting for survival.
This gruesome, cold-blooded
massacre of young schoolmates
shook the world. If this macabre
incident was a solitary act of lu-
nacy
, America would have some-
how patched the sorrow and ir-
reparable loss by collective for-
titude. But how does a nation
respond when this happened to
be the 214th mass shooting in
just the first five months of
2022? What happens to that
Law that has caused such
mindless violence ever
sincethe2ndAmend-
ment was etched
into the Ameri-
can Constitu-
tion in 1791
to PRO-

RIGHT TO KEEP BEAR ARMS.
A crazy Law that put a gun in every
hand, the biggest tool of violence. Is it
any wonder that the USA now holds
20% of the world's criminals in their
jails, with only 4% of the global popu-
lation. Most of these inmates (1 out of
32 US adults) had misused this con-
sumer item. The citizenry of the USA
now dreads to see their kin step out
into the daunting world.
It is incomprehensible how the old-
est Beacon of democracy has brought
itself to such a blood-stained cross-
roads. In what wisdom were killing
machines made legally available to all
outside the armed services. No other
country has such a law and no other
country suffers so. Just when the Pro-
choice resistance is threatening to rip
the USA, this huge wedge of Gun Laws
has the potential to divide the nation
further.
The Pro-Gun lobbies are mired in a
commercial vortex. With 400 million
guns among 330 million Americans,
you can imagine the clout of these
cash-cows funding politicians that pro-
vide them vigorous patronage, covertly
or overtly. The most influential is the
NRA (National Rifle Association), a
150-year-old organisation with a budg-
et of $400 billion and a membership of
5.5 million. To top it, there is the subtle
right-wing propaganda pitching for
gun ownership as a cultural heritage.
The killings can go on wantonly but
guns must sell, they seem to
imply
. How does Amer-
ica break this murder-
ous political deadlock?
T
o cut this Gordian knot, steely po-
litical will and unprecedented
gumption is the only answer. The
politicalfalloutcanonlybepositiveasthe
majority don't want to live in constant
fearof beingmoweddownanytime,any-
where! Those guns make them anxious
andnervous.TheDemocraticleadership
in power must bite the bullet and make
that decision their Silver Bullet at the
polls. Pardon the indecorous metaphors!
To draw parallels, look at the obses-
sion with Autos and Autobahns in Ger-
many. Just as American gunslingers
associate their weapons with a per-
sonal sense of freedom and
identity, the Germans con-
sider Autos their symbols of
engineering prowess and
mastery. Their auto-
bahns sans
speed limits,
being the
showcase
for those
s k i l l s .
However,
despite
t h i s
c r a z e ,
getting a
driving li-
cence in
Germany is a
tedious and
safety-driven
procedure.
It in-
volves theoretical and practical exams
with 90% as passing marks. With a cost
of $2,000 and months to qualify, these
trained hands rarely steer into other
vehicles, even at 400kmph!
Why can't the US Legislators put
themselves in the shoes of hundreds
of thousands of shattered lives and
push the safety catch on the millions
of guns pointing at the future of
American democracy, or worse, its
existence as the United States? The
USA must move further down the
democratic journey, not for itself
alone, but for the world. A shaky
America will provide a lift to scores
of autocrats around the world.
Whichever forces, internal or ex-
ternal, are mobilising this militia
surreptitiously are constructing a
time bomb. Ghosts of the 1861 Civil
War are yet to be exorcized. In that
war, 2% of Americans were killed, a
percentage that will kill 6.5 million
now, if we allow these simmering is-
sues to boil over. Americans, no
doubt, enjoy the machismo of a per-
sonalised gun, but times have
changed. Mental complexities have
multiplied under the pressures of
the rat race. The unbridled access to
firearms by all and sundry will
wreck America.
The January 06 insurrection was a
stark reminder of the awaiting am-
bush. Such providential escapes will
not take place again. America has to
act urgently against this evil. It's that
NOW OR NEVER
moment. Hopeful-
ly, the 80-year-old
US President,
with a 50-year
long trek thru
halls of power,
surprises every-
body with his po-
litical will and acu-
men in the show-
down against those
cynical vote hunters.

TOP TWEETS MOHAN BHAGWAT’S ADVICE WON’T APPLY TO MATHURA QUTUB MINAR n the face of it RSS chief Mohan Bhag- wat’s advice to Hin- dus to not go looking for a Shivling in eve- ry mosque is a welcome move. He added that everyone involved in the Gyanvapi mosque dispute should sit together and resolve it with mutual agreement. If not, then the decision of the court should be accepted by all considering the justice system as sacred and supreme”. Two points need to be made here. One, even in the Ram Janmbhoomi case, dialogue formed part of the resolution process before the sacred justice system pronounced its verdict. The second point is about Shiv- ling which, in the present case, pertains to Gyanvapi mosque. Will the litigating Hindus stop raising the issue of Lord Krish- na’s birthplace at Mathura where no mention of Lord Shi- va’s idol has been made yet. Or, will the Hindu groups stop claiming Qutub Minar as their religious place? No, they can’t be stopped. And the justice sys- tem knows what should be done. O as the Central Government lost its plot in Kash- mir where eight targeted killings in 27 days have instilled panic in the Pandit community? The fast-deteriorating situa- tion has caused such fear that the minority community is now bent on leaving the Val- ley as soon as possible. Nearly half of the 350 migrants have already moved to Jammu. They have also started pro- tests against the govern- ment’sfailuretoprotectthem. The BJP government may find it unpalatable and Vivek Agnihotri of The Kashmir Files fame may disagree, but theangrymigrantsareclaim- ing the situation to be worse than in the Nineties and have warned of an exodus. That will be a severe blow to the government’s scheme to re- settle Pandits in the Valley. The decision to leave the Val- ley was taken after terrorists shot dead Vijay Kumar, man- ager of a bank located in south Kashmir. There is an obvious Paki- stani hand behind this up- surge in the killings. The ISI- trained ultras have adopted the new tactic of identifying and then eliminating the soft targets generally using small firearms. Indian intelligence and police agencies’ failure lies in their inability to pre- vent these dastardly acts. It is this lack of intelligence that has riled the migrants and is threatening to widen the de- mographic imbalance. Sensing the gravity of the situation, Union Home Min- ister Amit Shah held a high- level security review meeting with National Security Advi- sor Ajit Doval, RAW chief Samant Goel, head of Intelli- gence Bureau Arvind Kumar and other officials. A firm response is needed to deter Pakistan from its jihadi de- signs in the Union Territory . How many more children have to diebeforetherightacceptthat the answer to bad guys with guns is not good guys with guns, it’s getting rid of guns. ” On May 25, the killing of 21 people, including 19 children, in a primary school in Uvalde city of Texas has shocked the wholeof America.Thisheart- wrenching incident of child massacre has given rise to new discussions for the Biden administration to make con- certed efforts towards gun control at the federal level. Actually America’s 2nd Constitutional Amendment (15Dec.1791)enshrinedtoown a gun as a right to citizens. Amendment reads: “A well regulatedMilitia,beingneces- sary to the security of a Free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” Therefore, citizens should not be denied possession of arms. But the changing scenario has made it extraneous by eliminating the concept of regulated citi- zen. With more than 400 mil- lion of firearms USA tops the worldintermsof gunaverage per capita. The United States, with only 5 percent of the world’s population, owns 48 percent of the world’s guns. That is 89 percent of Ameri- can have firearms. According to the Gun Vio- lence Archive a record 18 mil- lion guns were purchased in 2020. (40 pct. Purchaser are women) This fascination of gunsisnowposingthebiggest challenge. According to the report of the Centers for Dis- ease Control and Prevention’s forNationalCanterforHealth Statistics 44,826 people died in the 2021 and the country suf- fered $ 300 billion in damage duetogunviolence.Inthefirst five months of 2022 there have been more than 17,499 deaths in mass shooting incidents that is 119 deaths per day . The tragic 10 person died and 23 people were injured in the mass shooting incident in the Buffalo Super Market and in subway of NY City in a month; shook the whole of America. To stop such vio- lence, an emergency declared in New York in July last year, the state government had made a provision of spending Rs1038croreSothatyouthcan be freed from depression by creatingemploymentopportu- nities and they should leave thepathof diversion-violence. At the federal level, President Biden directed the Justice De- partment to prepare an action plan on Ghost Gun (Home MadeGun)andadrafton“Red Flag Law” to deal with gun violence. A plan of spending Rs 37,320 crore for the preven- tion of gun violence; along with it was also announced to send a strike force to effective- ly curb gun smugglers across the country . But the gun fasci- nation of American citizens thwarted all efforts of the Biden administration. According to the Centre for Homeland Defence and Secu- rity, there have been a huge increaseinincidentsof shoot- ings in schools which is very worrying. In the 2021, there have been 222 incidents, so far this year there have been 136 incidents in which 27 inno- cent deaths have occurred. The recent incident of child carnage has shocked the whole of America. President Biden said in his condolence message- “To lose a child is like having a piece of your soul ripped away .” He quoted scripture: “The Lord is near to the broken-hearted and saves the crushed in spirit.” In such situation only the National Rifle Association (a strong lobbying organization) should be expected to play its positive role in getting rid of the horrific violence. Notably theNRAsloganis“Gunsdon’t kill anyone, people kill each other.” More than 5 million citizensareactivemembersof this association and ever-in- creasing number is fretting. According to statistics, NRA spends more than Rs 1900 crore in lobbying, which is many times more than gun controladvocacygroupswhich thwart the overall efforts of governments. That’s why the President said helplessly- “As a nation, we have to ask, when in God’s name are we going to stand up to the gun lobby . Undoubtedly gun violence has inflicted deep wounds on American society and tar- nished America’s image in- ternationally. That’s why Biden had said- “Gun vio- lence is an epidemic, an in- ternational embarrassment for America, more a public health crisis than a gun cri- sis.” (8 April 2021). Whatever, governments and elite citi- zens should make concerted efforts to stop gun violence. The fascination of Indian youth towards illegal weapons is also scaring. Possessing il- legal arms and posting pics with weapons on social media has become the choice of most of the youth. They consider gangster as their ideal. Inci- dents of firing in wedding cer- emonies have become very common among youth. This time all three have bid farewell and none of them will be making a comeback. Till the last day of filing nomina- tions on Tuesday, BJP declared candidates for 22 seats and no Muslim candidate is named in it. In this way , the BJP will have one hundred mem- bers in the Rajya Sabha, in which there will not beasingleMuslimmem- ber.TheBJPalreadyhas 303 MPs in the Lok Sab- ha, out of which there is notasingleMuslim. The BJP did not field any Muslim candidate even in the recently held Ut- tar Pradesh assembly elections. However, senior jour- nalist and former minis- ter MJ Akbar was a Ra- jya Sabha MP from Mad- hya Pradesh. He was caught in the charge of ‘Me Too’. Several wom- en journalists accused him of sexual harass- ment, after which he had to leave the ministe- rial post. Then it seemed that again he would not be able to get the mem- bership of Rajya Sabha. Similar was not the case with Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi. Everyone was as- suming that he is a min- ister at the Center and the Muslim face of BJP in national politics, so he will return to the Up- per House. He is a Rajya Sabha MP from Jharkhand. But this time he too was not giv- en ticket by the party . In his place, the party has given ticket to Aditya Sahu in Jharkhand. It is being said that Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi will contest the by-elec- tion from his traditional Rampur Lok Sabha seat. He has been a one-time MP from this seat. The seat fell vacant after the resignation of Sama- jwadi Party’s Azam Khan. For the past few days, Azam Khan has been expressing dis- pleasure with his party - Samajwadi Party . It is believed that due to this public outrage, he was released from jail after 27 months. Informed sources say that he can help the BJP candidate. If he does not contest anyone from his family, then automatically BJP will be helped. The BSP has already said that it will not contest the by- polls. So, it is possible that with the help of Azam Khan, Naqvi- BJP’s first Muslim MP - reaches the Lok Sabha. The third Muslim MP was Syed Zafar Islam. He became a Rajya Sab- ha MP from Uttar Pradesh in the by-elec- tion two years ago. There was a lot of dis- cussion in Madhya Pradesh about his role in bringing Jyotiradi- tya Scindia closer to the BJP and toppling the Congress government. Then it was believed that he would get one more term. He is origi- nally from Jharkhand and is engaged in some political activities there these days, due to which there was talk of him becoming a Rajya Sab- ha MP from Jharkhand. But it didn’t happen. In this way, the three Mus- lim MPs of the BJP in the Rajya Sabha were bid farewell. BJP bids farewell to remaining Muslim MPs - Akbar, Naqvi Zafar! MINORITY REDUCED TO ‘ZERO’! New Delhi (Agencies): After veteran leader Ghulam Nabi Azad was refused the Rajya Sabha nomination, Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi tried to placate him by offering him the number two position in the party. Sources said the move has failed to pacify Azad, who re- fused to take the offer. According to sources after Sonia Gandhi's phone call on Sunday to Azad both met and dis- cussed issues regard- ing the party. Sources said Azad was offered the post in the organisation which could be number two in party hierarchy, but the veteran leader refused to accept it. Azad who was de- nied Rajya Sabha berth at the last moment is upset with the party af- fairs, and has not shown any interest in the organisation and reportedly told Sonia Gandhi that “new peo- ple should work as it is a generational shift in the party”. Azad and his support- ers are also upset with the way party is func- tioning in JK and in recent statewise 'Chin- tan Shivir' neither Azad nor his supporters par- ticipated. This clearly showed that all is not well. His supporters want him to be the face of the party in the state. Congress in its ten- candidate list for the Ra- jya Sabha denied Anand Sharma and Azad the berth and instead nomi- nated Pratapgarhi. SoniaGandhireached out to Ghulam Nabi Azad and sources said the move was an effort to douse the fire and cull any discontent. Azad was one of the prime movers of the G-23. Tension is also sim- mering in the party units in Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan over out- siders being nominated for the Upper House. The party leaders are questioning the move, but the Chief Ministers have not said anything against the party's choice of candidates. Both states will go to polls next year. On May 30, the court of Special CBI judge MK Nagpal had reserved the order and posted the matter for Friday . In the last hearing, senior advocate Kapil Sibal argued that the alleged transaction is from 2011 and the ED registered the case af- ter a lapse of a long time. He pointed out that there was no inves- tigation all these years. The HSR Act, or the Hart-Scott-Rodino Anti- trust Improvements Act of 1976, requires parties to report large transac- tions to both the Federal Trade Commission and the U.S. Department of Justice Antitrust Divi- sion for review. The development comes as Musk said last month that the Twitter deal was “temporarily on hold”, while he sought more informa- tion about the propor- tion of fake accounts on the platform. Twitter’s shares rose about 2% to $40.62 in premarket trading. New Delhi (PTI): Amid a growing de- mand for shifting Kashmiri Pandit em- ployees to safer places after a series of tar- geted killings, the Jammu and Kashmir administration on Fri- day made it clear the employees would not be moved out of the Valley but transferred to safer locations. Official also said the recent escalation in targeted terrorist vio- lence would not lead to any change in plans for holding the annual AmarnathYatrawhich is scheduled from June 30-August 11. The assertion comes in the wake of a spate of terror incidents which included target- ed killings of civilians. One of the victim was Rahul Bhat. Bhat was a Kash- miri Pandit migrant who was employed under a prime minis- ter's package. He who was shot dead by terrorists on May 12 at his office in Chadoora of Budgam in central Kashmir. His brutal killing sparked demonstra- tion by around 6,000 employees at various places who demanded their relocation out- side the Valley . But officials Friday argued that the Jam- mu and Kashmir ad- ministration cannot be a party to any eth- nic-cleansing script- ed from across the border by agreeing to the demand of Kash- miri Pandit employ- ees to be shifted out of the Valley. They also asserted the killing of soft tar- gets by terror groups won't deter them from holding the annual Amarnath Yatra. Just because its take on global issues was not agreeable to others, did not mean India was sit- ting on the fence, the minister said. “I am not sitting on the fence just because I don’t agree with you. It means I am sitting on my ground,” Jais- hankar said at GLOBESEC 2022 Brati- slava Forum, where he was talking on the top- ic, ‘Taking friendship to the next level: Allies in the Indo-Pacific’. He was questioned on In- dia’s position on the world stage, and that non-alignment could not always be a plausi- ble option for a world leader. The statement came when foreign min- ister was asked if sit- ting on fence was an option for India as an emerging world leader, especially with respect to ongoing Russia- Ukraine war. India has still not openly con- demned Russian inva- sion of its eastern neighbour that com- pleted 100 days since its launch on Feb 24. Rus- sianPresidentVladimir Putin has justified the invasion as a “special operation”. New Delhi (ANI): PM Narendra Modi on Thursday praised Sri Guru Teg Bahadur for serving as a shield that protected India’s faith and culture from the brutal assault launched on it by Mughal emper- or Aurangzeb. In an unprecedented address to the nation from the Red Fort on the 400th Parkash Purab of the ninth Sikh Guru, the PM also defended the Citizenship Amend- ment Act (CAA), calling it a necessary measure to provide relief and se- curity to the Sikhs and Hindus facing religious persecution in neigh- bouring countries. The PM also referred to Aurangzeb’s order, is- sued from the Red Fort, to behead the Sikh Guru after he had re- fused to convert to Is- lam. Theme of religious persecution also led Modi to bow before Guru Granth Saheb. Jaishankar said the country’s foreign policy was not based on accepting a “construct” that it had to side with a power axis, or it belonged to another camp if it did not side with one. “I (India) am one-fifth of the world’s population. I am what, today the 5th or 6th largest economy in the world. Forget the history and civilisation bit; everybody knows that. I feel I am entitled to have my own side. The experts from Fo- rensic Science Labora- tory (FSL), Lucknow, in their report, have said that the car owned by Dilbag Singh, the Kheri district president of Bhartiya Kisan Union-Tikait and also a witness in the Lakhim- puri Kheri violence case last year, was sta- tionary when it was hit by bullets. Kheri Superinten- dent of Police Sanjiv Suman on Thursday said the statements of two people Jitendra and Vipin whom Singh had claimedtohavedropped at their village before he was attacked, had been recorded and they revealed that Singh himself had told them to “attack” his vehicle. “The statements of Ji- tendra and Vipin were recorded under Section 164 CrPC in which they stated that Dilbag Singh had told them to cause such an incident in or- der to obtain arms li- cence,” the SP said in a press statement. Singh, in his FIR at the Gola Kotwali police station, had said two bike-borne armed men had opened fire on his car on the Aliganj-Mu- da on May 31. He had alleged that the attack- ers first punctured a tyre of his moving car with bullet shots and fired at his driving side window, but he escaped unhurt. “The ballistic ex- perts team from Luc- know thoroughly exam- ined the crime spot, where the alleged at- tack upon Dilbag Singh took place. In their pre- liminary report, they highlighted two major inconsistencies regard- ing the attack. Pithoragarh (PTI): A woman from Luc- know who has been staying illegally in a restricted area of Nabhidhang close to the Indo-China border has refused to leave it, claiming she is an incarna- tion of Goddess Parwati and will wed Lord Shiva who lives on Mount Kailash. “A police team, which had gone to remove Harminder Kaur from the re- stricted area, had to return disappoint- ed as she threatened to commit suicide if they insisted on tak- ing her away,” Pithoragarh SP Lo- kendra Singh said. However, we have decided to send a bigger team to bring her down forcibly to Dharch- ula, he said. “The woman, a resident of Aliganj in UP, had gone to Gunji with her mother on 15 days’ permission issued by SDM Dharchula, but refused to leave the restricted area even after her per- mission expired on May 25,” the SP said. The police of- ficer said a 3-mem- ber police team comprising two SIs and an inspector was sent from Dharchula to bring her back from the restricted area but had to return emp- ty handed. First India Bureau Lucknow: Seven min- isters in the Yogi Adi- tyanath government, who are not yet mem- bers of the state legis- lature, will now take the Vidhan Parishad route to get elected. Thirteen seats to the Vidhan Parishad are falling vacant and elec- tions are to be held on June 20. The BJP, on its strength in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly, can safely send nine mem- bers while the Sama- jwadi pary (SP) can send four members. The BJP ministers who need to get elected to the Upper House, in- clude deputy Chief Minister Keshav Mau- rya (who retains his position despite losing the Assembly election), Bhupendra Chaudhary, Narendra Kashyap, JPS Rathore, Jaswant Singh Saini, Danish Azad Ansari and Daya Shankar Mishra aka Dayalu. Apart from these sev- en, the party has a long list of aspirants for the remaining two seats, including veteran lead- er Shatrudha Prakash, who recently left the Samajwadi Party to join the BJP. The Samajwadi Par- ty, which has a number of members retiring from the Vidhan Pari- shad next month, is fac- ing a piquant situation since the Suheldev Bhartiya Samaj Party (SBSP) president Om Prakash Rajbhar is de- manding his share this time. Rajbhar wants a seat for his son Arvind Ra- jbhar who lost the As- sembly polls. There is also pres- sure on SP president Akhilesh Yadav to nominate Krishna Pa- tel, who heads the Apna Dal (K) and had lost the Assembly polls. Gyanendra Kumar Shukla Lucknow: After the resounding success in the recently concluded assembly polls, BJP is now gearing up to re- ward the senior office bearers of its organisa- tion with the member- ship of the Upper House of the legislature in re- turn for their hard work. In fact, through this step, the party think-tank apparently has a well-thought-out plan to deliver the mes- sage to all the office bearers of the organiza- tionthatwhoeverworks diligently while being dedicated to the party will definitely be re- warded with a suitable post. It is worth noting that the term of the Legisla- tive Council of Deputy CM Keshav Prasad Maurya, who recently lost the assembly elec- tion from Sirathu seat, is also ending, so it is pertinent for him to get the membership of the Upper House. Along with him, JPS Rathore, Dayashankar Mishra aka Dayalu, Narendra Kashyap,JaswantSaini, Bhupendra Chaudhary and Danish Azad will also be made MLCs. Be- cause all these minis- ters of the Yogi govern- ment are not yet mem- bers of any house and under the obligation of constitutional provi- sions, it is inevitable for all of them to be a part of the legislature with- in six months of hold- ing the post of minister. Apart from these, BJP strategists are also going to ensure mem- bership of the Upper House to those office bearers of the organisa- tion, who played an im- portant role in the par- ty’s electoral victory. The electoral process is going on for the thir- teen seats falling vacant in the UP Legislative Council. In terms of the strength of the mem- bers in the assembly, the BJP with 273 MLAs will easily secure nine seats, while the SP alli- ance can get four seats. Apart from this, there is scope for adjusting the BJP’s favorite lead- ers in those six seats of the council which are to be nominated by the Governor. If BJP’s high- ly placed sources are to be believed, then the of- fice bearers of the or- ganisation who are frontrunners for the membership of the council include Mahesh Srivastava, president of Kashi region of BJP; Dharmendra Singh Sainthwar of Gorakh- pur; Manvendra Singh of Kanpur-Braj region; Mohit Beniwal of West region and Shesh- narayan Mishra of Awadh region. Organisation office bearers Priyanka Rawat and Ranjana Up- adhyay can also be made part of the Upper House to ensure the participation of wom- en. Political observers insist that party func- tionaries have contrib- uted a lot in the series of successes of BJP, now by increasing their morale, all the partymen are being prepared to mobilize with full vigor for Mis- sion-2024. Bulandshahr (PTI): Samajwadi Party (SP) president Akhilesh Ya- dav on Thursday met the family of the man who died last month af- ter getting injured during a demolition drive by a bulldozer de- puted by the adminis- tration. Rohtash and three others had got injured in an anti-encroach- ment drive in Buland- shahr on May 2. Rohtash was allegedly shoved by the contrac- tor as he pleaded with him not to bulldoze his house. Even as he fell down, the contractor ordered the bulldozer operator to demolish the house. Before he could get up, the bulldozer pulled down the house bury- ing Rohtash under a wall and leaving him seriously injured. Yadav had earlier raised the issue of Rohtash’s death during the bulldozer proceed- ings in the Legislative Assembly. He has also tried to corner the gov- ernment tweeting about the matter. The party on Thurs- day through a tweet demanded lodging of a murder case against the District Magistrate (DM) and the Superin- tendent of Police (SP) and give a compensa- tion of Rs 1 crore to his kin. Rohtash succumbed to injuries 10 days after the incident. Four peo- ple, including the con- tractor, were booked in the case on charges of culpable homicide. Mathura (PTI): A group of petitioners in the Shahi Idgah Masjid-Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi dis- pute site on Thurs- day sent legal notices to the Centre and the Archaeological Sur- vey of India seeking relocation of idols of Hindu deities, which they claimed are bur- ied under the stair- case of an Agra mosque. The notice said the movementof thepub- lic on the staircase be stopped immediately . The notices have been sent under Sec- tion 80 of the Code of Civil Procedure, un- der which parties are required to respond within 60 days. The petitioners claimed costly idols taken from Mathu- ra’s Keshav Dev tem- ple were buried un- der the staircase of the Agra’s Begum Sahiba Masjid by Mughal emperor Au- rangzeb when he al- legedly destroyed the temple here in 1670. ”Relocate the deities within the stipulated time failing which they would be liable to bear the cost,” said advocate Mahendra Pratap Singh, one of the petitioners. 10 ETC LUCKNOW | SATURDAY,JUNE 4, 2022 www.firstindia.co.in I https://firstindia.co.in/epapers/lucknow I twitter.com/thefirstindia I facebook.com/thefirstindia I instagram.com/thefirstindia t was a pleasant summer morn- ing in this little town of Uvalde in Texas, USA. Parents were af- fectionately readying their little darlings for school hugging and kissing them as those 7-year- olds sauntered to their buses. Nineteen among them were waving their last goodbyes, with faces pressed gleefully against the window glasses. Yes, the last goodbyes, because two hours later a sleepy-eyed, long-haired 18-year-old senior student burst into their classroom and started firing at them and their two teachers. He fired a total of 150 bullets from two Assault Rifles procured off the rack on his last birthday. The eerie, split-second silence that ensued must have pierced millions of souls around the world. This lull was soon shattered by holler- ing voices and horrifying screams all around. The police arrived within five minutes after the first call by a teacher. But for intriguing reasons steeped in cowardice and incompetence, the 19 Police officers let the lone gunman fire shots for another hour, killing and in- juring the terrified 4th graders and teachers, scampering around for a hid- ing place. By the time they gunned down the killer an hour later, 21 joyous families had been devastated with 17 injured fighting for survival. This gruesome, cold-blooded massacre of young schoolmates shook the world. If this macabre incident was a solitary act of lu- nacy , America would have some- how patched the sorrow and ir- reparable loss by collective for- titude. But how does a nation respond when this happened to be the 214th mass shooting in just the first five months of 2022? What happens to that Law that has caused such mindless violence ever sincethe2ndAmend- ment was etched into the Ameri- can Constitu- tion in 1791 to PRO- T E C T T H E RIGHT TO KEEP BEAR ARMS. A crazy Law that put a gun in every hand, the biggest tool of violence. Is it any wonder that the USA now holds 20% of the world's criminals in their jails, with only 4% of the global popu- lation. Most of these inmates (1 out of 32 US adults) had misused this con- sumer item. The citizenry of the USA now dreads to see their kin step out into the daunting world. It is incomprehensible how the old- est Beacon of democracy has brought itself to such a blood-stained cross- roads. In what wisdom were killing machines made legally available to all outside the armed services. No other country has such a law and no other country suffers so. Just when the Pro- choice resistance is threatening to rip the USA, this huge wedge of Gun Laws has the potential to divide the nation further. The Pro-Gun lobbies are mired in a commercial vortex. With 400 million guns among 330 million Americans, you can imagine the clout of these cash-cows funding politicians that pro- vide them vigorous patronage, covertly or overtly. The most influential is the NRA (National Rifle Association), a 150-year-old organisation with a budg- et of $400 billion and a membership of 5.5 million. To top it, there is the subtle right-wing propaganda pitching for gun ownership as a cultural heritage. The killings can go on wantonly but guns must sell, they seem to imply . How does Amer- ica break this murder- ous political deadlock? T o cut this Gordian knot, steely po- litical will and unprecedented gumption is the only answer. The politicalfalloutcanonlybepositiveasthe majority don't want to live in constant fearof beingmoweddownanytime,any- where! Those guns make them anxious andnervous.TheDemocraticleadership in power must bite the bullet and make that decision their Silver Bullet at the polls. Pardon the indecorous metaphors! To draw parallels, look at the obses- sion with Autos and Autobahns in Ger- many. Just as American gunslingers associate their weapons with a per- sonal sense of freedom and identity, the Germans con- sider Autos their symbols of engineering prowess and mastery. Their auto- bahns sans speed limits, being the showcase for those s k i l l s . However, despite t h i s c r a z e , getting a driving li- cence in Germany is a tedious and safety-driven procedure. It in- volves theoretical and practical exams with 90% as passing marks. With a cost of $2,000 and months to qualify, these trained hands rarely steer into other vehicles, even at 400kmph! Why can't the US Legislators put themselves in the shoes of hundreds of thousands of shattered lives and push the safety catch on the millions of guns pointing at the future of American democracy, or worse, its existence as the United States? The USA must move further down the democratic journey, not for itself alone, but for the world. A shaky America will provide a lift to scores of autocrats around the world. Whichever forces, internal or ex- ternal, are mobilising this militia surreptitiously are constructing a time bomb. Ghosts of the 1861 Civil War are yet to be exorcized. In that war, 2% of Americans were killed, a percentage that will kill 6.5 million now, if we allow these simmering is- sues to boil over. Americans, no doubt, enjoy the machismo of a per- sonalised gun, but times have changed. Mental complexities have multiplied under the pressures of the rat race. The unbridled access to firearms by all and sundry will wreck America. The January 06 insurrection was a stark reminder of the awaiting am- bush. Such providential escapes will not take place again. America has to act urgently against this evil. It's that NOW OR NEVER moment. Hopeful- ly, the 80-year-old US President, with a 50-year long trek thru halls of power, surprises every- body with his po- litical will and acu- men in the show- down against those cynical vote hunters.
