1. Kirit Somaiya’s wife moves Sewri court against Sena MP Raut
First India Bureau
Mumbai: Dr Medha
Kirit Somaiya, wife of
BJP leader Kirit Somai-
ya, on Wednesday filed a
defamation suit against
Shiv Sena Member of
Parliament Sanjay Raut
before the Sewri Metro-
politan Magistrate’s
court.
A BJP spokesperson
told First India, “The
defamation suit was
filed today in the wake
of repeated publication
and television news re-
ports quoting the Sena
MP making unfounded
allegations claiming
that Dr Medha Somaiya
and the Non-Govern-
ment Organization
(NGO) Yuvak Pratish-
than had committed a
scam of Rs100 crore in
collusion without pro-
viding a shred of evi-
dence. This has resulted
in besmirching her rep-
utation in society
.”
The BJP leader’s wife
move the Sewri court
and has expressed confi-
dence of the suit pro-
ceedings being initiated
as early as next week.
She has also pointed out
that similarly unfound-
ed allegations had been
levelled against her by
the Sena MP Sanjay
Raut back in 2016 as
well, when he had al-
leged that she was in-
volved Rs118 crore Slum
Redevelopment Author-
ity fraud.
“Even then Dr Somai-
ya had moved the Bom-
bay High Court and jus-
tice Kathawala had re-
strained Raut from any
further public state-
ments against her. It is
high time that people,
particularly those in
high political positions,
are held liable for their
public statements--espe-
cially if these infringe
upon the reputation and
tarnish the image of re-
spectedpeopleinsociety
.
This is a repeat offence
and we are seeking a
quick legal remedy to
prevent further tarnish-
ing of Dr Somaiya’s im-
age and an effective de-
terrent to such deliber-
ate political targeting,”
thespokespersonadded.
With the Somaiyas
taking the legal route,
the matter will now be
heard on May 26 in the
local court, officials
said.

As Rajya Sabha elections loom, red herrings abound

Mumbai: The six Rajya
Sabha (RS) seats from
Maharashtra look set to
cause friction between
the Bharatiya Janata
Party (BJP) and the
Maha Vikas Aghadi
(MVA) government led
by the Shiv Sena in alli-
ance with the National-
ist Congress Party
(NCP) and the Indian
National Congress
(INC). Already, a lot of
red herrings are in the
fray
.
Chief Minister Ud-
dhav Thackeray has
staked claim to one ad-
ditional Rajya Sabha
seat along with MP San-
jay Raut’s seat that falls
vacant in July. Thack-
eray is keen to leverage
his party’s numero uno
position in MVA to se-
cure the additional
votes needed to succeed
in his ambitious politi-
cal gambit.
On the other hand, a
well-placed BJP leader
told First India, “Vinod
Tawde’s name is being
bandied about as a pos-
sible nominee to Parlia-
ment, although he was
given an organizational
responsibility as Na-
tional General Secre-
tary of the party. Nota-
bly, Tawade (Education
Minister in the erst-
while Devendra Fad-
navis-led government)
was denied an assembly
ticket to contest in 2019.
Yet, his ‘Marathi Ma-
noos’ identity is being
touted as the rationale
for his RS candidature
to confuse the opposi-
tion.”
With three RS seats
tied up, the BJP will
aggressively
poach for
votes for
cash or
kind from within the
MVA alliance to embar-
rass the apparent unity
of the alliance partners
that has ruled Maha-
rashtra for 2.5 years sta-
bly, despite
the for-
mer’s claims to
the contrary
.
Meanwhile,
NCP chief and
the tallest Mara-
tha leader in the
state, Sharad Pawar
is also believed
to have a
master strategy up his
sleeve to upset the BJP
calculations and keep
his flock together until
RS voting takes place
in June. The twist in
the tale came with BJP
presidential nominee
Yuvraj Sambhajiraje
Chhatrapati throwing
his hat in the ring as an
independent, for a sec-
ond consecutive tenure
in the upper house of
Parliament.
Congress spokesman
Atul Londe says the al-
liance will arrive at a
consensus soon even as
the party’s RS nominee
and former Union fi-
nance minister P Chid-
ambaram is seeking to
renew entry to Parlia-
ment from Maharash-
tra if his overtures to
Tamil Nadu CM Stalin
do not bear fruit.
Ironically, the last
man standing is the
BJP’s firebrand leader
Kirit Somaiya, who won
with the second-highest
vote margin from
among Mumbai’s six
Parliamentary seats in
2014.
He was not offered a
party ticket in 2019.
“Somaiya is a logical
choice considering he
played a pivotal role in
2014, not just for the
BJP government for-
mation in Maharashtra
but also in Rajasthan.
This was duly acknowl-
edged by Vasundhara
Raje Scindia right after
she became CM. Unfor-
tunately, although he
takes on the Shiv Sena
and NCP aggressively
in Maharashtra, an ex-
tension to his political
career through the Ra-
jya Sabha appears un-
likely if factionalism
prevails in the BJP,” a
BJP leader said.

WHY AND HOW?
Chennai/New Delhi: More than
three decades after he was impris-
oned in the Rajiv Gandhi assassina-
tion case, life convict AG Perariva-
lan was set to walk free on Wednes-
dayaftertheSupremeCourtordered
his release. The top court order
to release Perarivalan comes
after a long-winded legal bat-
tle. Besides lawyers and Ta-
mil Nadu politicians fight-
ing his cause, his septuage-
narian mother Arputham
Ammal has flown across
the country to meet every
leader possible to help in
the release of her son.
Over the years, his re-
lease seemed imminent
several times but al-
ways seemed to
elude him.
However, the
first step to him
walking free
came on March 9 this year, when the

oped when the bail order had come.
After observing in a previous hear-
ing that Perarivalan’s conduct in jail
was good, and that he was being dis-
criminated against under Article 14
of the Constitution (right to equali-
ty), a bench of Justices L Nageswara
Rao and BR Gavai granted him bail.
ACCUSED OF BUYING TWO 9-VOLT
BATTERIES USED IN ASSASSINATION
Perarivalan was 19-year-old at the time of Rajiv
Gandhi’s assassination. He was accused of buy-
ing the two 9-volt batteries for Liberation Tigers
of Tamil Eelam (LTTE)’s Sivarasan, who master-
minded the criminal act. The batteries were used
in the bomb to assassinate Gandhi. Perarivalan
had claimed all along that he wasn’t aware of the
purpose of the batteries.
MY 31 YEARS IN PRISON IS THE MESSAGE:
PERARIVALAN SAYS AFTER RELEASE
After the Supreme Court order, Perarivalan said,
“For the past 31 years, only the legal fight was
in our minds. I have been released only today. I
have to breathe now. I will discuss with my fam-
ily about my future.” “My 31 years in prison is the
message,” he added. His father Kuildasan, mother
Arputhammal, and sister Anbumani hailed the apex
court’s decision.
‘SORROW AND FURY, CONGRESS

The Congress Wednesday expressed pain and
disappointment over the release of Rajiv Gan-
dhi assassination case convict A G Perarivalan.

death toll reached
1,47,856. State capital
Mumbai recorded 194
cases, its highest daily
spike since February 19
this year.
The sole fatality was
recorded in eastern Ma-
harashtra’s Gadchiroli
district. The state’s case
fatality rate stands at
1.87%. The state has
1,605 active cases now.
The districts of Satara,
Sangli, Nandurbar,

Mumbai: Indrani
Mukerjea, the prime
accused in the Sheena
Bora murder case,
will have to stay in
the Byculla women’s
prison at least until
Friday despite the Su-
preme Court grant-
ing her bail on
Wednesday, as the
trial court will have
to finalize her bail
conditions.
She was arrested in
August 2015 for alleged
involvement in the
murder of her daughter
Sheena (24) three years
prior.
Her lawyer Sana
Raees Shaikh said she
will try and move the
special CBI court here
on Friday to get bail
conditions finalized
and secure Mukerjea’s
release.
A three-judge bench
of the SC granted bail
to Indrani earlier in the
day, saying she had al-
ready spent six-and-a-
half years in jail and
the trial was not likely
to be completed any
time soon.
It directed the special
CBI court, where the
trial is underway, to fi-
nalize Mukerjea’s bail
conditions.
The SC also suggest-
ed that bail conditions
be similar to those im-
posed on her former
husband and co-ac-
cused Peter Mukerjea,
who walked out of pris-
on on bail in March
2020.
Peter Mukerjea, a
former media baron,
had been granted bail
in February 2020 by the
Bombay High Court
against a bond of Rs2
lakh and asked not to
interfere with the
probe or tamper with
evidence.
However, Justice NW
Sambre denied relief
to Indrani saying that
witnesses, including
accused-tur ned-ap-
prover Shyamvar Rai,
had specifically named
her as having commit-
ted the crime.

RCB, on the other
hand, have had a mixed

fifth spot with 14 points
from 13 matches.
But what could hurt
RCB is their net run rate

GT would move them to
16 points but that might
not be enough as they
also need a few favoura-

wins, RCB had the mo-

undergraduate students will start from June 8,
while the same for the post-graduate courses
will begin from June 15, and all other examina-
tions, excluding those for the first and second
year students, will begin from June 22.

pumping stations will be turned off between 9 am
and 6 pm due to work on pre-monsoon projects. The
main channel of wastewater leading to water purifica-
tion centers will be repaired on the right and left side

people, a woman, her two children and husband, who
went missing from Shirur taluk of Pune were found

on Tuesday afternoon. Police suspect the man and
woman poisoned the children and then committed
suicide by hanging. The deceased have been identified
as Kunal Gaikwad (29), Priyanka Ingale (25) and her
children Bhakti (5) and Mauli (3). According to the
police, Priyanka and her children went missing from
their native place Shirur on May 2. Her husband filed
a missing persons case at Shikrapur police station.
Kunal too went missing around the same time, and
his wife filed a missing report a few days later.
Shirdi: A Hyderabad-based devotee has donated
a 4 kg gold band worth `2 crore to the famous
Saibaba temple in Shirdi, temple authorities said.
The devotee, Parthsarthi Reddy, wanted to donate
the band for the Saibaba idol’s throne in 2016, but
the required procedure could not be completed then
and the process later got delayed due to the COV-
ID-19 pandemic, the temple trust’s CEO Bhagyashri
Banayat, said. In 2007, another Hyderabad-based
devotee had donated a throne of 94 kg of gold to the

(JeM) terrorist from
Jammu and Kashmir
(JK) who allegedly
conducted a recce of Dr
Hedgewar Smriti

in Maharashtra
last year.
According to an of-
ficial, the ATS recently
took Raees Ahmed
Sheikh Asadulla Sheikh
(26), resident of
Aw a n t i p o r a
town in JK’s
Pulwama dis-
trict, into custody on a pro-

overthelasttwodays.
Sheikh allegedly
conducted a partial
recce of the Hedgewar
Smriti Bhavan in
Reshimbaug area of
Nagpur and managed to
send avideo of theBhavan
to his handler in Pakistan.
Sheikh said that his han-
dler was a man named Omar,
who claimed to be the opera-
tional commander of JeM’s
terrorist launching pad in
Nawabpur, Pakistan.
On July 13, 2021, he ar-
rived via a Delhi-Mumbai-
Nagpur flight and checked
into a hotel in the Sitabuldi
area. The handler had
promised Sheikh that a local
would contact him and
assist him with the opera-
tion in Nagpur. However,
Sheikh conducted the recon-
naissance on his own as
no person contacted him
in Nagpur.
Sheikh took an auto-rick-
shaw and used Google Maps
to reach the Reshimbagh
area on July 14. His handler
provided the location. His
target was to conduct the
recce of the Smriti Bhavan.
He alighted near the
Reshimbagh ground in the
afternoon.
According to the official,
Sheikh turned on his cell-
phone camera and held it
near his head, as if he were
on the phone with someone.
He walked through the
Reshimbagh grounds while
filming it. He then sent the
video to his handler via
WhatsApp, but the latter
was irritated by its low
quality and told him to shoot
another video. However,
Sheikh refused, citing
police security, and turned
off his phone.
He then took an auto-rick-
shaw and reached a mosque
near Santra Market gate,
where he stayed the whole
day and returned to the
hotel in the evening. On
July 15, Sheikh went to
Srinagar by a Nagpur-Delhi-
Srinagar flight.
The Kotwali police station
here had earlier registered a
case against Sheikh under
various sections of the Un-
lawful Activities (Preven-
tion) Act (UAPA).

Shiv Sena accuses
Oppn of horse-
trading for RS polls
Mumbai: The Shiv
Sena, which is seek-
ing to get two candi-
dates elected to the
Rajya Sabha (RS), on
Wednesday alleged
that its political op-
ponents were resort-
ing to horse-trading
for the sixth seat
from Maharashtra in
upcoming polls of
the Rajya Sabha.
“The ruling Maha Vi-
kas Aghadi in Maha-
rashtra has the arith-
metic on its side to win
the sixth seat,” assert-
ed Sena’s Chief Spokes-
person MP Sanjay
Raut.
“The jealousy of the
opposition can be seen
through the attempts of
horse-trading for the
sixth Rajya Sabha seat
by the opposition. The
money from corruption
and the horse-trading
through it...when will
this vicious circle
stop?” Raut said in a
tweet.
His assertion came a
day after Sena leader
and Maharashtra
Transport Minister
Anil Parab said his
party will field a sec-
ond candidate in the RS
polls and expressed
confidence that the sec-
ond candidate of the
Sena will get elected.

REGIONAL
PARTIES ARE
DOING BETTER
THAN CONGRESS
AGAINST THE BJP
he Congress is offi-
cially headed by So-
nia Gandhi and not
her son Rahul, but it
is the latter who calls
the shots in the party
, and creates
problems. Hardik Patel leaving
the Congress to possibly join the
Bharatiya Janata Party will
prove costly for the party in
termsof PatidarvotesinGujarat
but Rahul is taking it too lightly
.
Or so it seems. Patel is not the
only one. Before him it was He-
manta Biswa Sarma whose part-
ing proved to be an irreparable
loss for the Congress in the
north-east. Humiliation, which
forced Captain Amarinder Singh
to quit, was another example of
Rahul’s ineptitude.
Rahul’s recent statement on
regional parties has also drawn
flak. The Congress has a strong
presence only in Rajasthan and
Chhattisgarh, while regional
parties have done better than
the grand old party against the
BJP. West Bengal, Telangana
and Tamil Nadu are proof that
Rahul should not undervalue
regional parties which have
done better than the Congress.
T
he Supreme Court
order releasing
AG Perarivalan, a
convict in former
Prime Minister
Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination
has fuelled a two-faceted row.
One, the Congress has taken
umbrage to the convict’s re-
lease and asked if the re-
maining six will be freed too.
Two, the verdict has given
the Tamil Nadu government
a handle to criticise the state
Governor who sat over the
state Cabinet’s recommenda-
tion to remit Perarivalan’s
sentence. There are other is-
sues over which the Gover-
nor has dragged his feet an-
gering the MK Stalin govern-
ment.
The TN Governor set a re-
cord of sorts in his stalling
Perarivalan’s remission. The
Supreme Court commuted
Perarivalan’s death sentence
to life imprisonment in 2014
because decision on his mer-
cy petition was being inordi-
nately delayed. In 2015 he ap-
plied to the Governor for
pardon and sought remission
of his sentence. In 2018 the
top court asked the Governor
to decide on his pardon plea.
But the Governor did not give
it a thought. Soon after, the
State Cabinet recommended
that Perarivalan be released
forthwith. Again in 2020, the
apex court said that the Gov-
ernor was competent to grant
remission even if investiga-
tion against Perarivalan was
on. The CBI too left it to the
Raj Bhawan’s discretion.
The Governor still did not
act and the convict continued
to languish in jail stating that
the power of remission vest-
ed in the President. Welcom-
ing the order as victory for
“state autonomy”, Stalin
said, Governors have no pow-
ers to interfere in the govern-
ment’s decisions. Stalin must
remember that one swallow
doesn’t make a summer. The
present verdict won’t change
the Governor’s ways.

ARMY SECULARISM
A POSSIBLE ROLE MODEL
FOR INDIAN SOCIETY TODAY
n the last two months the
state of Rajasthan has wit-
nessed communal riots over
issues involving religious
faiths of two communities. A
review of the recent commu-
nal violence has shown that
although secularism and reli-
gious freedom have been re-
stored in the constitution but
the realities on ground have
been different. Unfortunately
,
in India secularism is more
of a subject of politics than
of metaphysics or even val-
ues. This is one of the major
reasons of eruptions of such
rioting endangering commu-
nal harmony. While we can
keep debating and blaming
on factors like appeasement
of minority by some or re-
duced tolerance of majority
by others, failure of law en-
forcing agencies and so many
others but in reality it’s a fail-
ure of unique Indian society
which derives its strength
from ‘Unity in Diversity’ and
‘Peaceful Co-Existence’
which has been prevailing in
our country for ages. The con-
stitution of India aims gov-
ernance that allows people of
all religions to live in peace
and harmony. The govern-
ance and politics must deal
with administrative fairness
and economic development
of its citizens and keep per-
sonal beliefs like religion and
social customs out of its do-
main unless they contravene
the established rule of law.
The Indian Army is a secu-
lar organisation and all offic-
ers and soldiers serve the Na-
tionwithprideirrespectiveof
their religion, caste, creed or
gender. It’s been a decade and
a half since I hung my uni-
form and as a retired Army
Officer, I have been a witness
to the fact that our people are
easily tricked and provoked
falling prey to the hate mon-
gers on name of caste, creed,
religion and regionalism. In
the army, each officer identi-
fies with the religion of his
troops. In regiments where
the soldiers are from more
than one religion, the officers
and all jawans attend the
weekly religious prayers
mainly referred as ‘Mandir
Parade’ for all the faiths.
Indian army genuinely be-
lieves in two eternal truths -
the oneness of God and vic-
tory in operations. Both are
so inter related and have been
deeply rooted in Olive Green
hearts that we fail to see any-
thing beyond this eternal
truth. On one occasion in 1992
in my mixed Arty Regiment
where we traditionally had a
Mandir and an ad hoc Gurud-
wara, the CO proposed estab-
lishing a ‘Sarv Dharama
Sthal’ to enable co locating
sacred symbols and books of
all religions. Later on a Regi-
mental celebration day
, I was
thrilled to see our Pandit Ji
with a Granthi, a Maulvi, a
Pastor all under one roof in
theunit‘SarvDharamaSthal’
offering prayers and partici-
pating in the function. In my
opinion, there can never be a
better portrait of national in-
tegration or secularism.
Amongst many other ac-
tivities in Army, one of the
most popular one is Sports
and this binds the whole unit
as one inseparable team. The
team is represented by just
single name of Paltan and
the selection criteria is mer-
it as there are no distinctions
on caste, creed, regions or
religions. Rather as a team
captain of a Division Hand-
ball team I never knew who
belonged to which religion or
region. We all prayed togeth-
er and played together with
perfect harmony
.
Lastly
, it’s the operations
that truly reflect the camara-
derieandspiritdecorpsinthe
well knit bonded organisation
like Indian Army
. There are
floods of examples of display
of oneness by the soldiers to
defend their honour and safe-
tyof thecountry-areligionin
most true sense for any Fouji.
I can recall an Operations
roomof aDivisiondeployedin
active operations. The staff
and the troops who were exe-
cuting the operational task on
ground had faith in different
religion. The operations were
completed in 96 hours giving
no breaks or rest to any of the
team members. Everyone was
contributing more than hun-
dred percent and the morale
and performance of troops on
ground as amazing. It was in-
deed an Army Unit with Mus-
lim troops who caused maxi-
mum damage to Pakistan
posts.Attheendof operations
when the celebrations were
on, I asked myself did anyone
even know or talk about caste,
creed, religion or region of
others - no not even once. So
whyarewesomuchintocaste,
creed, religion or regionalism
in normal daily life.
THE VIEWS EXPRESSED BY
THE AUTHOR ARE PERSONAL
I
For an Indian soldier, his
religion is the Indian Army
or the nation and the faith he
belongs to doesn’t really
matter as much while he is
serving people of the nation.
This is the single most reason
why Indian Army still
remains the most trusted
institution of the country in
the eyes of common man. I
wish our entire country
follows in the footsteps of our
Army which is epitome of
Secularism, National
Harmony and Unity

Chandigarh (Agen-

who were sitting on a
dharna at the Mohali-

pressfortheirdemands,
Wednesday ended their
stir after the Punjab
government accepted 12
of the 13 demands.
While a formal an-
nouncement of the ac-
ceptance of the de-
mands was made by
Punjab rural develop-
ment and panchayats
minister Kuldeep Singh
Dhaliwal, the precursor
to it was a meeting be-
tween leaders of pro-
testing farmers’ organi-
sations and Punjab
Chief Minister Bhag-

13 demands, the two
sides could not reach a
consensus on the de-
mand for a bonus of Rs
500 on every quintal of
wheat on account of a
drop in the yield due to
shrivelling of grains.
After the meeting,
Dhaliwal reached the
protest site to make a
formal announcement
of the acceptance of the
demands. Earlier, farm-
er leader Jagjit Singh
Dallewal had said that
after meeting Mann,
they held a meeting
among themselves and
confirmed that Dhali-
wal would reach the
spot and make the an-
nouncement.
During the meeting,
the Chief Minister di-
vided the state into two
zones for sowing of

INDIA PLANS TO DEPLOY S-400
MISSILES BY JUNE: PENTAGON
Washington (Agen-

deploy the Russian-
made S-400 missile de-
fence system by next
month to defend itself
from Pakistani and Chi-
nese threats as it is pur-
suing an extensive mili-
tary modernisation ef-
fort encompassing air,
ground, naval and stra-
tegic nuclear forces,
Pentagon’s top intelli-
gence official has said
during a Congressional
hearing.
India started receiv-
ing the delivery of the
S-400 missile defence
system from Russia in
December last year,
Lieutenant General
Scott Berrier, Director
of Defence Intelligence
Agency, told members
of the Senate Armed
Services Committee
during a recent Con-
gressional hearing.
As of October 2021,
India’s military was
seeking to procure ad-
vanced surveillance
systems to strengthen
its land and sea borders
and boost its offensive
and defensive cyber
capabilities.“In Decem-
ber, India received its
initial delivery of the
Russian S-400 air de-
fence system, and it in-
tends to operate the sys-
tem to defend against
Pakistani and Chinese
threats by June 2022,”
Lt Gen Berrier said.
“India continued to
develop its own hyper-
sonic, ballistic, cruise
and air defence missile
capabilities, conduct-
ing multiple tests in
2021. India has a grow-
ing number of satellites
in orbit, and is expand-
ing its use of space as-
sets, likely pursuing of-
fensive space capabili-
ties,” he said.
Lt Gen Berrier told
the lawmakers that New
Delhi is pursuing an ex-
tensive military mod-
ernisation effort encom-
passing air, ground, na-
val and strategic nucle-
ar forces with an em-
phasis on domestic de-
fence production.

US TO OFFER INDIA $500 MN IN MILITARY AID
The US is preparing a military aid
package for India to deepen se-
curity ties and reduce the country’s de-
pendence on Russian weapons, people
familiar with the matter said. The pack-
age under consideration would include
foreign military financing of as much
as $500 million, according to one
person, which would make India one
of the largest recipients of such aid
behind Israel and Egypt. It’s unclear
when the deal would be announced, or
what weapons would be included. The
effort is part of a much larger initia-
tive by Biden’s administration to court
India as a long-term security partner.
K’taka BJP postpones
Cabinet expansion
Bengaluru (Agen-
cies): The BJP has
postponed the much
awaited cabinet ex-
pansion in Karnata-
ka. Sources in the
party have said that
the decision has been
taken in view of elec-
tions to the Legisla-
tive Council and the
Rajya Sabha.
The party leaders,
fearing cross voting
by the disgruntled
members, have decid-
ed not to give any
room for it at all.
Besides, Chief Min-
ister Basavaraj Bom-
mai is taking up the
tour of Europe to at-
tend the World Eco-

from May 22 to 26.
The government
will have to take a call
on local body elec-
tions for Taluk and
Zilla Panchayats
across the state as
well as BBMP elec-
tions in Bengaluru.
The elections to 9
seats of Council and 4
Rajya Sabha seats
have already been de-
clared. The top brass
does not want to take
any chances and is
not in favour of open-
ing Pandora’s Box by
cabinet expansion.
CM Bommai recent-
ly maintained that the
party high command
will take a final call on
cabinet expansion. He
also said that the deci-
sion to allot ticket to
BY Vijayendra, son of
former CM BS Yedi-
yurappa whether to
contest MLC polls in
the state, lies with the
top leadership.
The core committee
had recommended Vi-
jayendra’s name for
the MLC. Sources in
the party say that the
stage is all set for min-
isterial berth for Vi-
jayendra.
However, the top
leaders are yet to take
a final call on the is-
sue as some party
leaders are apprehen-
sive about Vijayendra
becoming a power
centre in the govern-
ment as Yediyurappa
is going to throw his
weight behind his son.
Meanwhile, as the
cabinet expansion is
being delayed, the op-
position Congress
has issued statements
that many BJP top
leaders have ap-
proached them.
Fearing cross voting, State BJP halts Cabinet expansion.

New Delhi (PTI): The
Supreme Court on
Wednesday gave the
go-ahead for local
body polls in Madhya
Pradesh with OBC res-
ervation, allowing the
state government to
notify the reservation
pattern on the basis of
the recommendations
in a second report of a
state backward class-
es commission.
A bench presided by
Justice A M Khan-
wilkar took into ac-
count the state’s sub-
mission that an earlier
report which the court
had objected to had
been revised and that
the delimitation exer-
cise had already been
completed and notified.
“For the time being,
we permit the Madhya
Pradesh state election
commission to notify
the programme for the
respective local bodies
keeping in mind the
delimitation notifica-
tion already issued as
on date .i.e. till today
and the report submit-
ted by the dedicated
commission…,” the
Supreme Court or-
dered. “We permit the
state of Madhya
Pradesh to notify the
reservation pattern lo-
cal body wise to be ad-
hered to by the state
election commission
within one week.
The state election
commission shall no-
tify the election pro-
gramme in respect of
the concerned local
bodies thereafter with-
in one week.”
On May 10, the court
had directed that the
elections to the local
bodies be notified
within two weeks with-
out providing for OBC
reservation as the
state was yet to com-
plete the triple test laid
down by the SC before
providing for such res-
ervation.

World Meteorological Organization says extreme weather wreaked heavy toll on human lives
FOUR CRITICAL CLIMATE INDICATORS
BROKE RECORDS IN 2021: UN REPORT
Geneva (Agencies):
Four critical global in-
dicators of the climate
crisis broke records in
2021, according to a UN
report, from rising
oceans to the levels of
heat-trapping emis-
sions in the atmos-
phere.
Greenhouse gas con-
centrations, sea-level
rise, ocean heat, and
ocean acidification, set
four new climate
change records in 2021,
the World Meteorologi-
cal Organization
(WMO) said Wednes-
day
.
The UN World Mete-
orological Organiza-
tion (WMO) said these
were clear signs of hu-
manity’s impact on the
planet, which was
bringing long-lasting
effects. Extreme
weather, which the
WMO called the day-to-
day face of the climate
emergency, wreaked a
heavy toll on human
lives and led to hun-
dreds of billions of
dollars in damages, the
agency said.
Droughts and floods
triggered food price
rises that have been ex-
acerbated in 2022. The
WMO’s State of the
Global Climate in 2021
report also found the
past seven years have
been the hottest record-
ed. “Today’s State of
the Climate report is a
dismal litany of hu-
manity’s failure to tack-
le climate disruption.
Fossil fuels are a dead
end – environmentally
and economically,” said
António Guterres, the
secretary general of
the UN. “The only sus-
tainable future is a re-
newable one. The good
news is that the lifeline
is right in front of us.
Wind and solar are
readily available and,
in most cases, cheaper
than coal and other fos-
sil fuels. If we act to-
gether, the renewable
energy transformation
can be the peace project
of the 21st century
.”
Prof Petteri Taalas,
the WMO secretary gen-
eral, said: “Our climate
is changing before our
eyes. Human-induced
greenhouse gases will
warm the planet for
many generations to
come. Some glaciers
have reached the point
of no return and this
will have long-term re-
percussions in a world
in which more than 2
billion people already
experiencewaterstress.
“Extreme weather
has the most immedi-
ate impact on our daily
lives,” he said. “We are
seeing a drought emer-
gency unfolding in the
Horn of Africa, recent
deadly flooding in
South Africa and the
extreme heat in India
and Pakistan. Early
warning systems are
critically required [to
save lives] yet these are
only available in less
than half of WMO’s
187 member nations.”
The world’s oceans
absorb more than 90%
of the heat trapped by
greenhouse gases and
2021 set a record. The
increasing warmth in
the ocean, which is ir-
reversible over time-
scales of centuries to
millennia, has been es-
pecially strong in the
last 20 years. Much of
the ocean experienced
at least one strong ma-
rine heatwave in 2021,
the WMO said.
The global sea level
also reached a new re-
cord high in 2021. It has
increased by 10cm since
1993 and the rise is ac-
celerating, driven by the
melting of ice sheets
and glaciers and the
thermal expansion of
the ocean. The rise im-
perils hundreds of mil-
lions of coastal dwell-
ers, the WMO said, and
increases the damage
caused by hurricanes
and cyclones.
POLLUTION CLAIMED 9 MN LIVES GLOBALLY
IN 2019, INDIA TOPS THE LIST: LANCET
New Delhi: Pollution
was responsible for
nine million deaths in
2019 — equivalent
to one in six deaths
worldwide — and India
leads with nearly 2.4
million deaths, accord-
ing to a study published
on Wednesday in The
Lancet Planetary Health.
Of the nearly 2.4 million
deaths in 2019, air
pollution accounted for
16.7 lakh deaths — the
highest by any country.
Further, more than 5
lakh lives were lost in
the country due to water
pollution, followed by
occupational pollution
(more than one lakh)
and lead exposure (over
2 lakh). Globally, of the
nine million pollution

The Aon’s 11th an-

that the median CEO

Inflation to hit 9-yr high at 6.9%
Mumbai (PTI): The
average headline infla-
tion is set to accelerate
to a nine-year high at
6.9% in FY23, and the
Reserve Bank may go
for more rate hikes
during the fiscal, a do-
mestic ratings agency
said on Wednesday
.
The RBI will hike
rates by another 75 ba-
sis points and possibly
up to 125 basis points
as well if the turn of
events and data are
very adverse, India
Ratings and Research
said in a note.
“The first rate in-
crease by the RBI could
be of the order of 0.50%
in the June 2022 policy
and another 0.25% in
the October 2022 poli-
cy,” the agency said,
adding that the cash
reserve ratio could also
be hiked by another
0.50% to 5% by the end
of the fiscal.
In a surprise move,
the RBI on May 4 hiked
the repo rate at which
it lends to the system
by 0.40bps, and also the
CRR or the percentage
of deposits banks have
to park with the central
bank by 0.50bps in an
off-schedule meeting
as it saw threats to the
inflation target.
The Consumer Price
Inflation came at 7.8%
for April, making it an-
other month where the
RBI’s upper tolerance
bandof 6%wasmissed.
All the analysts are
sure about more such
hikes being in the off-
ing and some dent to
growth has a result of
the same.
Retail inflation will
increase till September
2022 and start declin-
ing gradually thereaf-
ter, it said, adding that
it is expected to remain
in excess of 6% for four
consecutive quarters
starting fourth quarter
of FY22 till third quar-
ter of FY23.
It can be noted that
under its pact with the
government, the RBI is
mandated to contain
inflation inside 6% and
the number breaching
for three consecutive
quarters will lead the
central bank to formal-
ly explain the reasons
for the same.
The rating agency
said retail inflation av-
eraged 4.1% between
FY16-FY19 crossed the
6% tolerance number
for the first time in De-
cember 2019, just at the
cusp of the COVID-19
pandemic. Despite the
collapse of demand in
the pandemic, the
monthly retail infla-
tion mostly remained
in excess of 6.0%till
November 2020 be-
cause of supply-side
disruption.
Thereafter, the
monthly retail infla-
tion till Dec 2021 had
mostly remained below
6% but again breached
the mark in Jan 2022,
and continued being
higher till April.
Referring to RBI
Governor Shaktikanta
Das’ oft-repeated
phrase of the ongoing
geopolitical events be-
ing a “tectonic shift”,
the agency said this
means that the future
inflation trajectory is
going to be heavily con-
tingent upon the evolv-
ing geopolitical situa-
tion which is in a flux.
Meanwhile, the rat-
ing agency also said
that the rupee also re-
mains under pressure
as a result of the fund
outflows as rates tight-
en globally, and im-
ports keep rising due to
hardening of oil prices.
India Ratings and Research say the RBI will hike rates by another 75bps and possibly up to 125 bps

SP CUTS FY23
INDIA GROWTH
FORECAST TO 7.3%
New Delhi (PTI):
SP Global Ratings
on Wednesday cut In-
dia’s growth projec-
tion for the current
fiscal to 7.3% from
7.8% earlier on ris-
ing inflation and the
longer-than-expected
Russia-Ukraine con-
flict. In its Global
Macro Update to
Growth Forecasts,
SP said inflation re-
maining higher for
longisaworry
,which
requires central
banks to raise rates
more than what is
currently priced in,
risking a harder
landing, including a
larger hit to output
and employment.
The growth projec-
tion has been cut to
7.3% for the current
fiscal. For the next
fiscal the growth has
been pegged at 6.5%.
“The risks to our
forecasts have picked
up since our last fore-
cast round and re-
main firmly on the
downside. The Rus-
sia-Ukraine conflict
is more likely to drag
on and escalate than
end earlier and
deescalate, in our
view, pushing the
risks to the down-
side,” SP said.
‘RBI’s criticism for
delayed rate hike unfair’
New Delhi (PTI): The
criticism that the Re-
serve Bank of India
was behind the curve
in hiking interest rate
to tame rising infla-
tion is unfair, former
RBI Governor D Sub-
barao said on Wednes-
day and asserted that
it is difficult for any
central bank to antici-
pate the future more
accurately
.
Earlier this month,
Monetary Policy Com-
mittee (MPC), the cen-
tral bank’s rate-setting
panel, surprised the
markets with a 40 ba-
sis points hike in repo
rate in an off-cycle
policy meeting. It was
also the first rate hike
after August 2018,
amid spiralling infla-
tion.
Subbarao further
said given that mone-
tary policy acts with a
lag, this rate hike, by
itself, is unlikely to
bring inflation down
in a hurry
.
“I saw that the hur-
ried action to tighten
monetary conditions
through an off-cycle
MPC meeting raised
several questions,” he
said.
Subbarao was re-
sponding to a question
why RBI did not raise
interest rate much ear-
lier despite rising in-
flation.
“I believe that this
criticism is unfair,” he
said.

that the incompetence

the Other Backward

when MP secured the
same.
He demanded the res-

the OBC quota”.
Talking to the media
Fadnavis said, “The
Supreme Court, on De-

asked the Shiv Sena-

‘triple test’ necessary
for establishing that
OBCs should be given

A commission was
formed to prepare a re-

SC rejected its report,
Fadnavis said in Nag-
pur.
In neighbouring Mad-

ple test and submitted a
report, he said.
“When the apex
court asked for a report
in a different form last

mitted promptly,” the
Leader of Opposition
in the state Assembly
added.
The court today al-
lowed OBC reservation
in that state, Fadnavis
said.
“I want to congratu-

that the incompetent
Maharashtra govern-
ment has killed the OBC
political reservation.
OBC reservation would
have been implemented
in the state had the Ma-
harashtra government
done the triple test on
time,” he claimed.
Meanwhile, talking
to reporters in Mumbai,
BJP MLA Devyani Far-

government over the is-
sue and demanded CM
Thackeray’s resigna-
tion for his “failure” to
ensure reservation to
the OBCs.

Withdraw charges against Ruby

First India Bureau
Pune: The Indian
Medical Associa-
tion (IMA) has
stepped in to de-
fend its col-

than a
month after
the kidney trans-

was brought to light
in Pune. The associa-

action against the
private hospital is
unjustified and that
such action puts the
lives of patients at
risk by stopping
transplant surgeries.
In an official state-
ment, the IMA stated
that the alleged kidney
transplant incident in
Pune seems to have led
to improper allegations
and legal proceedings
against the doctors and
the hospital involved.

The IMA response
comes after the city

Mumbai: The Pune police told the Bombay High
Court on Tuesday that it will not arrest or take
any coercive action against a robotic surgeon
and three other doctors from a private hospital
who were named in a FIR earlier this year in an
alleged case of organ transplant malpractice. The
statement came after a vacation bench of Justices
NW Sambre and Anil Pansare questioned why the
police was “in such a hurry to arrest these highly
qualified doctors.” The state’s counsel Aruna Pai
then submitted that the investigating officer in the
case had said the police was not going to arrest
the doctors yet and that it simply wanted to ask
them some questions related to the probe.

HC asks hosp to file reply on couple’s
plea to complete surrogacy procedure
Mumbai (PTI): The
Bombay High Court
on Wednesday direct-
ed a private hospital
to respond to a peti-
tion filed by a couple
seeking permission
to complete a surro-
gacy procedure they
had initiated before
the new Assisted Re-
productive Technol-
ogy and Surrogacy
Act came into effect.
A vacation bench
comprising Justice
NW Sambre and Jus-
tice Anil Pansare di-
rected the hospital’s
counsel Anita Castel-
lino to file a reply clar-
ifying the current legal
position on cases like
that of the petitioner
couple.
The bench further
asked the hospital to
clarify if the court can
pass any orders on
their interim prayer
seeking to transfer
their cryopreserved
embryos from the said
hospital to another fer-
tility clinic.
The petitioners’
counsel PV Dinesh in-
formed the court that
while the couple’s fer-
tilized embryo had
been preserved by the
hospital for transfer to
a surrogate, the new
Act came into effect in
January this year. And
at present, there was
no clear set legal pro-
cedure to even permit
transfer of embryos
from one fertility fa-
cility to another.
Castellino said the
Act prohibits surroga-
cy unless it is purely
altruistic. And among
other stringent provi-
sions, the Act man-
dates that only a mar-
ried relative with a
child of her own can
act as one’s surrogate.
Hence, the respond-
ent hospital put the
couple’s procedure on
hold stating that they
will need a court order
to resume the process,
she said.
Castellino further
told the bench that as
per the new Act, a state
board was the compe-
tent authority to grant
permissions for surro-
gacy procedures.
“The state board has
started accepting ap-
plications for surroga-
cy procedures. They
(the petitioners) can
approach the board,”
she said.
The court, however,
said it did not wish to
pass any orders before
taking the hospital’s
reply on record.
The court will hear
the matter further in
June.

Speaking to report-

OBCs for the last two
years, the Central gov-

fused to provide the

“The Supreme Court

to Madhya Pradesh,”
Patole said, asking what

the apex court gave per-
mission to the neigh-

I had always ad-

held me spellbound by
the sheer expanse of
the emotions which
cross her beautiful

is wrong ethically.
However in the cli-

weep with him. I re-

the last scene as
Sridevi recovered
from her amnesia and
is now a beautiful
young woman both
mentally and physi-

teacher who devoted
so much time to her

heworldof medicine
has grown by leaps
and bounds, and
what better than the
current pandemic to
understand the
growth of science,
especially in the field of med-
icine and health? However,
there remain diseases and
disordersthathavelittle or no
cure. Aplastic anemia is one
such condition that has an
impact on all types of blood
cells and can also turn out to
be fatal. It leads to failure of
bone marrow in the body
which further results in no
formation of any types of
blood cells. While many may
not have heard about aplastic
anemia, there are several
cases of it. Since aplastic ane-
mia causes no formation of
blood cells in the body, a per-
son suffering from it needs to
undergo a blood transfusion.
However, even that may not
help the patient.
But a homoeopathic doc-
tor in Indore, Madhya
Pradesh,in conversation
with First India has claimed
that aplastic anemia can be
treated with better results.
Dr AK Dwivedi, a renowned
homoeopathic doctor, said,
“Anemia, as we all know, is a
lack of blood in one’s body.
However, aplastic anemia is
a complete loss of blood or
no formation of blood in the
body
. In this, there will be no
blood formation in the body
of a person detected with it.
This requires the patient to
undergo a blood transfusion
for and bone marrow trans-
plant. But even that may not
guarantee complete treat-
ment, as aplastic anemia is
considered fatal.”
“Homeopathic medicines
have been proved to be effec-
tive for treating aplastic ane-
mia. The medicines help in
stopping the failure of bone
marrow development. Mean-
ing, if the bone marrow con-
tinues to develop in the body,
so would all types of blood
cells, and the body would be
able to keep producing blood
on its own,” claimed Dr
Dwivedi. Aplastic Anemia is
a rare and serious condition.
There are several symptoms
to it, the initial ones being
high fever, fatigue, and head-
ache. However, the serious
symptoms include uncon-
trolled bleeding from the
nose, stool, etc.
As per Dr Dwivedi, aplas-
tic anemia often goes unde-
tected in the early stages.
And by the time it is detect-
ed, the person’s condition
starts to get worse. He fur-
ther said that there are no set
age criteria for patients. It
can happen from a 15-year-
old child to a senior citizen
of 85 years of age. “It can
happen in any age group. Re-
cently, I treated a two-year-
old child from Bihar. But,
aplastic anemia is mostly
found in people in the middle
age group,” added Dr Dwive-
di. He also said that aplastic
anemia can also be found in
patients with any type of
cancer. “After undergoing
chemotherapy, if a person’s
bone marrow has had an im-
pact, he or she can be prone
to aplastic anemia,” he said.
But how does one get it
checked in the early stage?
To this, Dr Dwivedi said,
“Once must go through basic
blood tests every few months.
It is a very healthy habit. Not
just aplastic anemia, but a
check on your blood cells
can help you detect any dis-
ease at an early stage. One
must also not avoid symp-
toms such as fatigue.” While
concluding, Dr Dwivedi said
that aplastic anemia often
goes undetected unless the
serious symptoms start
showing up, which is why he
says that it is important to
undergo regular health
check-ups.
