BJP’s tacit political gambit matches ‘Shinde Sena’
Renni Abraham
Mumbai: The Bharati-
ya Janata Party (BJP)
has offered the Deputy
Chief Minister’s post
to Maharashtra’s Ur-
ban Development Min-
ister Eknath Shinde,
who has rebelled and
claimed political con-
trol over the Shiv Sena
party, with the exclu-
sion of Chief Minister
Uddhav Thackeray
. The
move is being seen as
an effort to cobble to-
gether a government in
the state once again af-
ter a gap of 2.5 years,
even as the upper ech-
elons of the BJP con-
sciously maintain a
stoic silence.
Meanwhile, the Shin-
de faction is expected
to stake an official
claim over the Shiv
Sena after physically
parading over 42 MLAs
in front of Maharash-
tra governor Bhagat-
singh Koshiyari, as
early as Thursday.
“We have only pro-
vided tacit assistance
to the rebel Sena lead-
ers, including at least
three ministers, who
were disgruntled with
the unholy alliance
with the NCP and Con-
gress over the last 2.5
years. Shinde’s group
is expected to stake
claim to not only being
the real Shiv Sena but
also to the party sym-
bol of Dhanush-Baan
(bow and arrow). It is
our understanding that
42 Sena MLAs are with
Shinde along with in-
dependents, taking
their number to well
over 50,” a senior BJP
leader told First India.
The BJP is taking a
wait-and-watch ap-
proach from here on,
this person said, add-
ing, “Shinde is only
waiting
u p o n
a
couple of technical and
legal aspects and for-
malities to be complet-
ed before he presents
himself, with Sena and
independent MLAs
in tow, before the
Maharashtra gov-
ernor as early as
Thursday.”
The Sena MLAs
do not have prob-
lems with CM
Thackeray but
definitely with
NCP Chief
Sharad Pa-
war.
EKNATH SHINDE MAY PARADE MLAS BEFORE GOVERNOR, STAKE CLAIM OVER SHIV SENA AND PARTY SYMBOL TOO
‘IMMATURE POLITICS’
Reacting to First India’s article that Enforcement
Directorate cases against Sena (and MVA) leaders
precipitated the sudden flight of the rebels out of
Maharashtra, he further noted, “At best
seven to eight MLAs were impacted
by ED notices; immature politics has
brought about the state of affairs within
the Shiv Sena today. When Sena MP
Sanjay Raut said that at worst his party
will collapse, he only further ensured
that the fence-sitting Sena MLAs also
made a beeline for Guwahati.”

As haemorrhage continues, 6
more MLAs, MLC fly to Assam
First India Bureau
Surat: Amid political
turmoil in Maharash-
tra following a revolt
by Shiv Sena minister
Eknath Shinde, six
MLAs and an MLC
from the neighbouring
state arrived in Guja-
rat’s Surat city on
Thursday and were
later flown to Guwa-
hati in Assam, where
party rebels are camp-
ing, in two chartered
flights, sources said.
Apart from the six
MLAs, Shiv Sena MLC
Ravindra Phatak also
reached Guwahati in
the BJP-ruled Assam
from Surat, where dis-
sidents were first
camping after arriving
from Mumbai on Mon-
day night, to join the
rebel camp.
Notably, Phatak was
part of a two-member
delegation sent by Ma-
harashtra CM Uddhav
Thackeray on Tuesday
to hold discussions
with Shinde and other
rebel Sena MLAs in Su-
rat to find a solution to
the political crisis
which has pushed the
Maha Vikas Aghadi
(MVA) government to
the brink.
As per passenger de-

Minister in the MVA

Mumbai: Maharash-

Speaker Narhari Zir-
wal on Thursday said
he has approved the
appointment of Ajay
Choudhary as the
Shiv Sena’s group
leader in the House,
replacing rebel legis-
lator Eknath Shinde.
The Shiv Sena on
Tuesday removed Shin-
de as the party’s group
leader in the Assembly,
hours after he revolted
and and travelled to Su-
rat in Gujarat with
some Shiv Sena MLAs,
triggering a crisis in
the tripartite Maha Vi-
kas Aghadi (MVA-com-
prising the Sena, NCP
and Congress) govern-
ment in Maharashtra.
“I have received a let-
ter from the Shiv Sena,
informing me that it is
appointing Ajay Choud-
hary as the party’s lead-
er in the Assembly and
removing Shinde from
the post with immediate
effect,” Zirwal told re-
porters on Thursday
.
“I have accepted the
letter, which was sent
by Chief Minister Ud-
dhav Thackeray,” the
deputy speaker said,
adding that Shinde’s re-

Mumbai: Even as po-
litical turmoil within
the Shiv Sena party
has spilled over, the
Congress party is still
reconciling itself to
the fact that seven of
its MLAs cross-voted
in the Vidhan Pari-
shad elections June 20,
in defiance of the de-
fied the party diktat.
“Seven Congress
MLAs defied the party
directive for the Vid-
han Parishad polls.
Two to four MLAs even
cross-voted for the
wrong Congress candi-
date. We had allotted 29
votes for Chandrakant
Handore, who needed
26 to win but got only
22. The mischief took
place at a very high
level in the party,” a
senior Congress leader
told First India.
With Handore allot-
ted 29 votes, Bhai Jag-
tap should have re-
ceived the remaining
15 Congress MLA
votes, still short of
eight votes to win.
“Seven Congress
MLAs definitely voted
for Jagtap instead of
Handore, whose candi-
dature was decided at
the high-command lev-
el. Rajya Sabha member
KC Venugopal and Ma-
harashtra public works
department’s Congress
Minister Ashok Chavan
were entrusted the task
to ensure the Congress
Dalit candidate
emerged victorious just
like in the Rajya Sabha
elections when Imran
Pratapgarhi got all the
44 Congress first prefer-
ence votes,” this person
added.
The Congress leader
noted that Mallikarjun
Kharge, the overseer
designated by the high
command for the Vid-
han Parishad polls, did
not have a hands-on
role in the process.
“This will have seri-
ous consequences for
the Congress party, not
only in the forthcoming
BMC elections in Mum-
bai but also, across the
state; already Dalit sen-
timents are being
roused against the par-
ty for having let down
Handore’s candida-
ture.”
While the Congress
high command has
been informed about
the apparent violation
of the party diktat for
the Vidhan Parishad
polls, party leaders in
Maharashtra are left
wondering whether a
political recovery is
even possible at this
point.

Some might want to
return, but can’t: Sena
MLA who ‘escaped’
First India Bureau
Mumbai: Shiv Sena
MLA Kailas Patil,
who had escaped from
a car carrying rebel
legislators to Surat,
on Thursday claimed
some of those taken
to the camp led by
Eknath Shinde might
be wanting to return,
but were forced to
stay back.
Addressing the media
in Mumbai, Patil re-
called how he walked
fora long distance near
the Maharashtra-Guja-
rat border, then got a lift
on a two-wheeler and a
truck to reach Maha-
rashtra in the wee hours
of Tuesday
.
Patil said after he cast
his vote in Mumbai on
June 20 for the Maha-
rashtra Legislative
Council polls, he was
calledtoShinde’sbunga-
low in Thane.
The MLA from Osa-
manabad said he along
with some others were
taken to Thane mayor’s
bungalow, where their
cars were changed be-
fore proceeding further.
“One of his (Shinde’s)
staff was with me and
we crossed Vasai-Virar. I
don’t know much about
the area, but as we
reached the (Maharash-
tra-Gujarat)checkpost,I
realized that I was being
taken in a different di-
rection,” he said.
“When the cars
stopped, the staff mem-
bersaidtherewascheck-
ing at the post and told
me to take a little walk. I
opened the car door and
saw there was a huge
traffic jam,” Patil said.
After getting out of
the car, the MLA crossed
the lane and got onto the
road going towards
Mumbai, he said, recall-
ing that he also got
drenched in the rain at
that time.
“There may be some
MLAs who want to re-
turn, but are unable to
come back due to pres-
sure or other problems,”
he claimed.
I walked between
trucks for about
1km. I asked a biker
for a lift, but he re-
fused. Later, another
person helped me
and left me at a ho-
tel, 3-4km away
from the check post.

driver gave me a

‘Shinde went against leadership for MLAs’
First India Bureau
Mumbai: Rebel Shiv
Sena MLA Sanjay
Shirsat has written a
letter to Chief Minis-
ter Uddhav Thackeray
,
claiming that state
minister Eknath Shin-
de took the step of go-
ing against the party
leadership as Sena
MLAs, who faced “hu-
miliation” for the last
2.5 years, persuaded
him to do so.
Shirsat, the MLA
fromAurangabad(West)
Assembly constituency,
in a three-page letter
dated June 22, claimed
that despite the Shiv
Sena being in power, the
coterie around Thack-
erayneverallowedthem
access to “Varsha”, the
CM’s official residence.
There was no question
of going to the state sec-
retariat,becausetheCM

said.
Shirsat said Eknath
Shinde opened doors
for the party MLAs.
The letter was posted
by dissident leader
Shinde on his Twitter
handle, claiming these
were the sentiments of
the Sena MLAs.
While the Shiv Sena
legislators had no ac-
cess to the chief minis-
ter, the Congress and
NCP, which are the
“real opponents” of the
Shiv Sena, were getting
all the attention,
Shirsat claimed in his
letter, adding that par-
ty MLAs were not al-
lowed to accompany
cabinet minister Aadi-
tya Thackeray (the
CM’s son) to Ayodhya.

HCjunksRanepleaagainstBMCorder
First India Bureau
Mumbai: The Bom-
bay High Court on
Thursday dismissed
the plea filed by Un-
ion Minister Narayan
Rane by saying that it
did not appear to be a
case of political ven-
detta. Rane had chal-
lenged the Brihan-
mumbai Municipal
Corporation (BMC)
order that rejected an
application for regu-
larization of alleged
unauthorized por-
tions of his residen-
tial bungalow in sub-
urban Juhu.
A bench led by Jus-
tice RD Dhanuka said
Rane’s plea, which had
claimed political ven-
detta behind the civic
body order, was “devoid
of merits and deserved
to be dismissed.” It,
however, stayed the
implementation of its
order for six weeks af-
ter Rane’s lawyer, sen-
ior counsel Milind
Sathe, sought time to
file an appeal against
the HC order.
The bench also re-
strained the BMC from
taking any coercive
action against Rane,
a BJP leader, vis-a-vis
the Juhu bungalow
for the same period of
six weeks.
Rane approached the
HC on Wednesday chal-
lenging the order
passed by the BMC on
April 07 rejecting his
application for regular-
ization and retention of
some portions of the
bungalow, which, as per
the civic body, were in
breach of municipal
and coast zone norms.
The BMC, through
senior counsel Aspi
Chinoy, and advocate
Joel Carlos submitted
that Rane had made
changes to open areas
and converted them
into usable, closed
structures.
It also said that while
the Union minister had
been granted an occu-
pation certificate in
2013 for his bungalow
that was constructed
over an area of 745 sq
m, the structure cur-
rently had stretched the
FSI limits to three times
of what had initially
been approved.
The HC, however,
said the BMC was right
in not regularizing
Rane’s additional con-
struction and changes
made at the bungalow
since he had already
used up all the FSI
granted to him at the
time of approval of his
sanction plan.
“Since the construc-
tion is totally unauthor-
ized, a question of po-
litical rivalry between
the Shiv Sena (headed
by Uddhav Thackeray)
and any other party be-
ing behind the BMC no-
tices does not arise,”
the HC said.
FSI PERMIT
The Supreme Court has held in several
judgements that all applications for regu-
larization have to be decided only in ac-
cordance with the law. In the present case, the BMC
cannot consider the entire plot for granting extra
FSI when the occupation certificate was granted for
745 sq m of area only.

Sarfaraz’s century propels Mumbai to 374 on Day 02
Kushan Sarkar
Bengaluru: In blazing
form this season,
Mumbai’s Sarfaraz
Khan hit a superb cen-
tury that kept his side
ahead against Madhya
Pradesh in the Ranji
Trophy final, being
played in Bengaluru,

fourth hundred of the
season 134 off 243 balls
-- the 41-time champions
managed a fighting 374
in their first innings af-
ter beginning the day at
248 for five.
But Madhya Pradesh
won’t be too unhappy as
they finished the second
day at 123 for one with
Yash Dubey (44 not out)
and Shubham Sharma
(41 not out) adding 76
runs for the unbroken
second wicket.
The day belonged to
Sarfaraz, who has now
scoredanastounding937
runs in Ranji Trophy in
just six games and could
make it 1,000 for the sea-
son if Mumbai bats
again in this match.
His innings had 13
boundaries and two
huge sixes. But what
stood out was how he
managed the innings af-
ter Shams Mulani was
trapped leg before by
Gourav Yadav (4/106) in
the opening over of the
second day
.
The manner in which
Sarfaraz has turned a
corner since the 2019-20
season (928 runs back
then) is phenomenal as
he had disciplinary is-
sues early in his career,
which also forced him
to leave Mumbai for a
season.
With father Naushad
Khan, who also doubles
up as his coach, making
him play 400 balls (near-
ly 67 overs including
nets and knocking) a
day at practice, Sarfar-
az 2.0 is a battle-hard-
ened man, the khadoos
street fighter that any
captain would want to
go to a war with.

haratiya Janata Par-
ty has outplayed the
Opposition by field-
ing Draupadi Mur-
mu, former
Jharkhand Governor, as its can-
didate for Presidential poll. The
choice helps its tribal push and
is acceptable to its allies. Mur-
mu is the first tribal, a Santhal,
and the second woman after
Pratibha Patil to be in line to
succeed Ram Nath Kovind in
Rashtrapati Bhawan. Being
from Odisha, Murmu has the
support of Biju Janata Dal. She
also has the backing of YSRCP
of Andhra Pradesh which gives
BJP the confidence of winning
the contest. The only doubt is
about Jharkhand Mukti Morcha
but it is likely to vote for Murmu
much against the wishes of Con-
gress, JMM’s ally in Jharkhand.
If JMM votes for Murmu the
Opposition will have to rework
its strategy for unity but only
after the Presidential election is
over. In the meantime, Opposi-
tion’s candidate Yashwant Sin-
ha, the former Union Finance
Minister, will be disappointed at
not getting JMM’s votes which
he is hopeful of.

INDIA-SOUTH AFRICA T20 SERIES
MAJOR GAINS BUT SOME
WORRIES TOO FOR TEAM INDIA!
fter a phenomenal comeback
from being 2-0 down and the
series decider on the line, the
Indian team watched Rain
Gods playing spoilsport in
Bengaluru last Sunday
. The
India-SouthAfricaT20Iseries
ended with 2 wins apiece.

with barely three overs
bowled in the series decider.
Despite ending on a disap-
pointing note, the series had
several positive takeaways for
the Men in Blue ahead of the
T20 World Cup later this year.
COMEBACK BY
DINESH KARTHIK
The remarkable comeback by
Dinesh Karthik was the most
heart-warming aspect for In-
dian fans. Enjoying a second
windtohiscareer,Karthikhad
returned to Team India after
three years on the back of
somesterlingperformancesin
theIPL.Butmanywonderedif
he could replicate his IPL suc-
cess in Indian colours against
a strong South African side.
Karthik, however, carried
his IPL form into the interna-
tional arena and scored at a
hugely impressive rate of
158.62 against the Proteas.
Warming up with an unbeat-
en 30 off 21 balls in the sec-
ond match, Karthik smashed
a magical 55 off 27 balls in
the fourth game. Given his
power-packed shows, voices
are growing for Karthik’s in-
clusion in the T20 World Cup
squad as many believe that
he can play the role of fin-
isher to near-perfection.
HARDIK PANDYA’S
PERFORMANCE
Like Karthik, Hardik Pandya
too made an impactful return
to Team India. After leading
Gujarat Titans to victory in
IPL 2022, Hardik made cru-
cialcontributionsallthrough
the series. After a blistering
31 off 12 balls in the opening
game in Delhi, he hit another
30-plus score in the game at
Vizag. Also, in the Rajkot
game, he made a vital 46 off
31 balls enabling India to re-
cover from a dicey 81 for four.
Another major plus is Is-
han Kishan’s form. Despite
being the costliest buy in the
IPL auction at 15.25 crores,
the young opener was rather
unimpressive in the Mumbai
Indians’ disastrous IPL cam-
paign this year. But the tal-
ented left-hander turned
things around against South
Africa and was the top run-
getter, hammering 206 runs
at an average of 41.20 and a
terrific strike rate of 150.36.
ON THE
BOWLING SIDE
On the bowling side, veteran
pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar
posed a lot of challenges to
South African batters. Till a
few months ago, Bhuvi’s abil-
ity to swing the ball seemed
to have gone missing and his
place in Team India appeared
doubtful. But he rediscov-
ered his bite and stifled most
Proteas batters and was even-
tually named the ‘Player of
the Series’.
If Bhuvi looked like a
bowler reborn, Harshal Patel
was also impressive and can
aspire for a T20 World Cup
berth. Besides bagging seven
wickets, it was great to see
how he learnt from his mis-
takes. Even young pacer
Avesh Khan displayed his
wares with skill. Despite
some former cricketers ask-
ing for his exit from the play-
ing XI, the team management
stood firm and Avesh repaid
their trust in Rajkot by bag-
ging 4/18 in a hostile spell
and seems ready to serve In-
dian cricket in the long run.
Beyond the positives, there
were a few areas of concern
as well. Rishabh Pant’s form
was possibly the biggest wor-
ry
. The middle-order was a
point of concern as not only
Pant but even Shreyas Iyer
keptstrugglingtostrikeform.
As the first-choice T20I wick-
et-keeper currently, Pant’s
form is worrying and as the
stand-in skipper too, his cap-
taincy left a lot to be desired.
SELECTION OF
PLAYERS
Inaddition,thesame11players
were picked for all five match-
es, with stability being the
name of the game. The refusal
to change players implied that
youngseamerslikepacesensa-
tionUmranMalikandleft-arm
Arshdeep Singh didn’t play a
singlegame.Whileconsistency
in selections is a laudable poli-
cy
, both the young pacers de-
served a look in. In particular,
denying a debut to 22-year-old
Umran who regularly clocked
over 150 in IPL games, seems
like a major chance missed on
home grounds.

New Delhi: The
Bharatiya Janata
Party government
at the Centre and
the BJP govern-
ments in many
states are changing
books on history
and some other
subjects. Political
science books are
also being changed.
It is not that books
are being changed
for the first time
but for the first
time books are be-
ing changed in
such an calm and
easy manner. Ear-
lier there was a pro-
cess to replace the
books. A team of
writers and editors
worked on it. The
changes were made
keeping in mind
the totality of the
subject. Care was
taken that the
change in the book
of a subject should
be in such a way
that in spite of the
change, it would be
consistent. It
should not seem
that suddenly
something has
been removed in
the middle. Howev-
er, this time thi
‘care’ is not being
followed, as with-
out consideration,
random parts are
being removed, af-
fecting the totality
of the subject.
Changes have
been made in many
NCERT books. The
chapters about the
rulers of the Delhi
Sultanate and the
Mughal period have
been shortened. But
shortening does not
mean that chapters
are written anew,
only random parts
have been removed.
Its purpose is that
students do not
know or know little
about certain
things. Instead, it
would have been
better if they were
rewritten about
those subjects in an
objective way. It
helps the students
to form their own
point of view. Even
if the BJP has to
make history and
political science
books according to
its ideology, then
writing every chap-
ter anew was a bet-
ter solution. Just
like the books
made during the
Congress rule also
have a chapter on
Emergency.
DOES BJP NOT KNOW THE SUBTLE, STRATEGIC
WAY OF CHANGING CONTENT IN BOOKS?

New Delhi: An inter-
esting post was seen in
social media that the
fight that Congress
should have contested
in courts is being fought
on streets and the fight
which should be fought
on the streets, is being
fought on social media!
When Rahul Gandhi
was called by the En-
forcement Directorate
(ED) for questioning
about the alleged irreg-
ularities in the Nation-
al Herald case, the en-
tire Congress party
took to the streets. Keep
in mind this matter is
very old and the Con-
gress has gone to the
Supreme Court to get
the matter dismissed.
But even in the court it
did not get relief. This
case was also started by
Subramanian Swamy,
who had once brought
down the government
of Atal Bihari Vajpayee
by upporting Jay-
alalithaa with Sonia
Gandhi. So it is not a
very simple matter of
political revenge of the
government.
So when all the top
leaders of Congress
came out on the road,
their message went that
Congress leaders are de-
voted to only one family
.
Their allegiance is not
to the people, but to the
family. Secondly, the
BJP also got an opportu-
nity to say that the Con-
gress party is agitating
to defend the Nehru-
Gandhi family in the
matter of corruption. In
fact, the Congress has
to fight this battle in
court. Congress should
remember how the SIT
set up for the Gujarat
riots questioned the
then Chief Minister of
Gujarat Narendra Modi
for hours. Modi had qui-
etly gone to the SIT’s of-
fice and joined the inter-
rogation. If instead of
taking to the road in
protest against Rahul’s
appearance before the
ED, Congress would
have taken to the road
in protest against the
bulldozers going on
people’s homes in Ut-
tar Pradesh or strug-
gled on the road like
this on the issue of in-
flation, poverty and
unemployment, com-
mon people would con-
nect more with it. But
the Congress party is
fighting all such bat-
tles on Twitter.
Congress’ bizarre strategy: Fight real issues on social
media, protest against ‘first family’s’ issues on roads!
New Delhi (ANI): PM
Narendra Modi on
Thursday inaugurated
the new premises of the
Ministry of Commerce
and Industry – ‘Vanijya
Bhawan’. Besides, Modi
also launched a new
portal called NIRYAT– a
one-stop place for all
info needed for India’s
foreign trade.
During the inaugural
ceremony, Modi said
this new premise and
the portal are a symbol
of both physical and
digital infrastructure,
and it would reflect In-
dia’s aspiration of
‘Atma Nirbhar Bharat’
or a self-reliant India.
He went on to say
that providing ‘Ease of
Access’ to citizens is In-
dia’s priority, and ac-
cess to govt policy for-
mulations and banking
to the citizens were the
key facets of the past 8
years’ governance mod-
el. Further, the benefits
of the government
schemes reaching all
sections of people,
without any form of
discrimination, can
only ensure ‘Sabka Vi-
kas’ or welfare for all,
he said.
Giving reference to
the previous govern-
ments, he said that pro-
jects were earlier an-
nounced for the sake of
“political interest” but
there were no guaran-
tees about the comple-
tion of such projects.
“They were not seri-
ous about the comple-
tion of the projects.
This new building (get-
ting completed on time)
is an example of how
we have changed the
mindset,” Modi said.
Government’s projects
completed on time, and
schemes reaching their
goals are nothing but
giving respect to the
taxpayers of the coun-
try, he said.
“When govt projects
complete on time and
schemes reach target
are nothing but giving
respect to the country’s
taxpayers. Under PM
Gati Shakti national
master plan, we now
have a modern plat-
form…Keeping into
consideration the aspi-
rations of new India,
this building will have
to give a push to all as-
pects of development,”
Modi said.

ister Hemant Soren, may be among the 17 Opposi-
tion parties, which nominated Yashwant Sinha on
June 21 as their joint candidate for the July 18 Presi-

review its position and back the ruling BJP-led NDA’s
Presidential nominee, Draupadi Murmu. Murmu is
on course to be elected as the next President, first
tribal to assume the country’s highest constitutional
office. Shibu Soren-headed JMM clearly does not
want to be seen as a party which despite its tribal

New Delhi (PTI): The
Indian media and en-
tertainment industry
is expected to grow at a
CAGR of 8.8% and
reach `4.30 lakh crore
by 2026, according to a
report by global consul-
tancy firm PwC.
The growth would be
paced by digital media
and advertising
through deeper pene-
tration of the internet
and mobile devices in
the domestic market,
along with traditional
media, which will hold
their steady growth,
the report said.
TV advertising is ex-
pected to reach over
`43,000 crore by 2026. It
will make India the
fifth-largest TV adver-
tising market globally,
after the US, Japan,
China and the UK.
The Indian media
and entertainment in-
dustry is expected to
be around `3.14 crore
in 2022, registering an
overall growth of
11.4%, as per the
PwC’s Global Enter-
tainment Media
Outlook 2022-2026.
India’s OTT Video
services are expected
to become a `21,031
crore industry in the
next four years by 2026,
in which `19,973 crore
would come from sub-
scription-based servic-
es and `1,058 crore from
Transactional VOD
(video on demand).
“It is subscription
services that are driv-
ing this rapid growth,
accounting for 90.5% of
revenue in 2021 and set
to account for 95% in
2026,” it said.
The population size
and widespread use of
mobile-led Internet
video will underpin
rapid growth in the
OTT market over the
forecast period.
In particular, up-
take of 5G will permit
low-latency services
such as OTT video
streams, greatly boost-
ing the sector.

...ON THE BACK OF BETTER AGRICULTURE PRODUCTION
New Delhi (PTI):
The Indian econo-
my can grow by
7-7.8% this fiscal on
the back of better
agriculture produc-
tion and a revital-
ised rural economy
amid global head-
winds mainly due
to the ongoing Rus-
sia-Ukraine war,
eminent econo-
mists said.
Eminent econo-
mist and BR Ambed-
kar School of Eco-
nomics (BASE) Vice-
Chancellor NR Bha-
numurthy said at
present Indian econ-
omy is facing multi-
ple headwinds large-
ly from external
sources.
Noting that global
inflationary pres-
sures and the Russia-
Ukraine war have
brought in risks to
the economy, which
is otherwise strong
with all the domes-
tic macro funda-
mentals being well
managed, he said
unlike advanced
economies, India’s
Covid stimulus
measures, especially
the fiscal policy in-
terventions, are less
inflationary and
rather growth-en-
hancing. “With bet-
ter agricultural pro-
duction and revital-
ised rural economy
India should touch
7% growth in the
current year despite
global headwinds,”
Bhanumurthy said.
Echoing similar
views, eminent econ-
omist and ISID direc-
tor Nagesh Kumar
said the high-fre-
quency indicators
point to a robust
growth momentum
carrying through
2022-23 with a real
GDP growth some-
where between
7-7.8%. French econ-
omist Guy Sorman
said India could be
severely impacted by
the high cost of en-
ergy and fertilis-
er imports.
Global headwinds pose risks
New Delhi (PTI):
The World Bank has
cut India’s economic
growth forecast for
the current fiscal
to 7.5% as rising
inflation, supply
chain disruptions,
and geopolitical ten-
sions taper recovery.
India’s economy grew
8.7% in the last fiscal
(2021-22) against
a 6.6% contrac-
tion in the previous
year. Nagesh Kumar
noted that the global
headwinds of rising
commodity prices
do pose downside
risks for the Indian
economic outlook
as the CPI levels
are elevated. “Yet,
I do not think that
India is heading
towards stagflation,
given that the growth
momentum seems
quite robust,” Kumar
argued. According to
Guy Sorman, inflation
has become a global
phenomenon, caused
by unanimous poor
money management,
an excess of public
expenses (largely
justified to compen-
sate for Covid-19),
and low-interest
rates. “The monetary
bubble is exploding
everywhere. India
is not different,” he
pointed out.
Govt aim to keep
FY23 fiscal deficit
at 2021 level
New Delhi (Agen-
cies): India’s govern-
ment will not be able to
cut its budget deficit
this fiscal year as previ-
ously projected, offi-
cials said, but will seek
to cap the shortfall at
last year’s level to pre-
vent a major deteriora-
tion in public finances.
Efforts to maintain
some fiscal discipline
reflect New Delhi’s
concern around risks
to its sovereign credit
rating but will likely
limit the government’s
firepower to contain
inflation and provide
relief to households
and businesses.
In February, Prime
Minister Narendra
Modi’s government set
a fiscal deficit target
of 6.4% of gross do-
mestic output (GDP)
for the year that start-
ed on April 1, com-
pared with a deficit of
6.7% last year.
The sources said that
while increased spend-
ing to provide relief
from inflation meant
the government would
miss this year’s target,
policymakers would
seek to limit the devia-
tion to 30 basis points.
“We will try to con-
tain the slippage to last
year’s levels,” one of
the officials said.

NEXON CATCHES FIRE, PROBE UNDERWAY
Mumbai: In the last

however, in a first such

Mumbai. As of now, the
cause of this particular
incident is not known.

this isolated incident.”
“We will share a detailed
response thereafter. We
remain committed to the
safety of our vehicles
and their users,” it
added. According to the
video, the owner of the
car charged his Nexon
EV with a normal slow
charger installed at his
office. After driving about
5 km towards his house,
he heard some weird
sounds from the car and
saw flashes of warnings
on the dashboard which
alerted him to stop the
vehicle and get out of
the car. Later, firefighters
were seen spraying water
on the burning Nexon
EV. There have been no
reports of loss of life or
injury due to the incident.

Controversial POCSO circular withdrawn by Maharashtra govt
First India Bureau
Mumbai: The Maha-
rashtra government
on Thursday in-
formed the Bombay
High Court that the
circular requiring
prior permission for
registration of cases
under Protection of
Children from Sexual
Offences (POCSO) Act
and molestation laws
has been withdrawn.
However, a notifica-
tion to that effect, is
yet to be issued.
A division bench
comprising Justice Ni-
tin Jamdar and Justice
NR Borkar clarified
that the subject matter
of the petition was as-
signed to a different
bench. And hence, it
was not to be presented
before them.
A petition was filed
by a city resident re-
cently seeking quash-
ing of the circular by
contending that it was
arbitrary
.
On June 06, Mumbai
Police Commissioner
Sanjay Pandey had is-
sued a circular, which
said a FIR for molesta-
tion or under the POC-
SO Act should be regis-
tered only upon a rec-
ommendation by an
ACP and after receiving
permission of the DCP
of the zone. The reason
then cited for the direc-
tive was that many
times false cases of
such offences are regis-
tered due to disputes
over property
, money or
because of personal
feuds.
However, the Nation-
al Commission for Pro-
tection of Child Rights
(NCPCR) had sought
withdrawal of the or-
der, saying it will vio-
late the rights of sexual
abuse victims.
Pandey had later said
if majority feels other-
wise, the directive can
be reconsidered.

Court, on June 09, had

MOVE COMES AFTER WIDESPREAD OUTCRY OVER VIOLATION OF RIGHTS OF SEXUAL ABUSE VICTIMS

First India Bureau
Mumbai: This year’s
monsoon has been
unusual. According
to data from the In-
dia Meteorological
Department (IMD),
the Mumbai city and
suburbs experienced
significant rainfall
deficits in June this
year, with most moni-
toring stations, in-
cluding the San-
tacruz base station,
receiving only half
of the average pre-
cipitation amount for
this period.
Now, In a shocking
turn of events, data
from the Brihanmum-
bai Municipal Corpora-
tion (BMC) has indicat-
ed a possible shortage
of potable water in
Mumbai, with water
stocks only enough to
last the city 38 days.
While Mumbai re-
ceived some good spells
of rain since last week,
the catchment lakes in
and around the city
have suffered a distinct
lack of continuous rain-
fall. These city lifelines
catch and supply fresh
water to the region, and
their water stocks have
now dropped to less
than 10% of what is re-
quired.
According to IMD
forecasts, however,
there is hope as the en-
tire Konkan belt—
which includes the city
of Mumbai—is slated
to receive heavy to very
heavy rainfall in iso-
lated areas over the
next five days. This has
also resulted in the city
being put under a yel-
low watch status advis-
ing residents to ‘be up-
dated’ till Saturday,
June 25.
To go without a water
cut, Mumbai must have
at least 14.47 lakh mil-
lion litres of water in
reserve by October 01.
However,currentstocks
lie at a meagre 1.43 mn
ltr in the seven lakes of
the city. For reference,
last June’s total water
stocks stood at 2 lakh
mn ltr or roughly 15%.
BMC officials are
hopeful that rainfall
this week will help re-
plenish the water stock.
Mumbai: The arrival of south-west monsoon in
Mumbai and the Konkan region has brought some
respite from the heat wave conditions which were
prevailing earlier. According to IMD official, KS
Hosalikar, active monsoon conditions will prevail
over Maharashtra and the rainfall warning (orange
alert) will continue for next 5 days for Maharash-
tra. Also severe weather warnings have been given
for Konkan including Mumbai, Thane and near by
regions. As per reports, cloudy sky with moderate
rain in the city and suburbs is expected to stay.

MARITAL BLUES
SHOWING
AFFECTION
guest at a wed-
ding observed
the bride and the
b r i d e g r o o m
warmly exchang-
ing loving glanc-
es and tenderly holding
on to each other! No one
could deny that they
were deeply in love! As
the newlyweds graceful-
ly moved together, the
guest wondered how long
would their marriage
stand the test of time? As
the years go by, will their
love deepen or will it take
wings and fly away?
What happens to
“love” after one gets mar-
ried? One husband said,
“It was wonderful before
we got married, but
somehow after the wed-
ding, it fell apart. All the
love I thought I had for
her and the love she
seemed to have for me
evaporated.”
When it is unswerving
and enduring, the love be-
tween a man and a wom-
an can truly be beautiful.
Since there are so many
breakups, one can realis-
tically ask, whether last-
ing love is possible!
The true and abiding
love between marriage
partners includes affec-
tion and attachment.
Thus, love is best sensed
when it is expressed. So,
one must not allow the
activities of daily life to
prevent one from show-
ing affection. It conveys
to the other person care
and protection – any
problem one faces is im-
portant to the other. It
makes the marriage
flourish. The pleasant
memories of expressed
affection enhance the un-
failing quality of love.
Someshowlessaffection
as the years go by
. Just as
foodisessentialinkeeping
the body healthy
, affection
strengthens the marriage.
Even after decades of be-
ingmarried,husbandsand
wives need regular reas-
surance from each other
that they are cared for and
valued each day
.
Using words like, “you
are beautiful!” or “pre-
cious” can make the part-
ner feel cherished. Affec-
tion can also be shown in
writing through text mes-
sages and e-mails. A lov-
ing glance, an occasional
gift, supporting one an-
other and doing different
tasks together can nour-
ish the relationship.
At times, busy hus-
bands and wives regu-
larly plan ‘date nights’ or
‘date weekends’ to be to-
gether. They treat their
partner as lovingly as
they did when they were
first dating. One can even
plan to do something as
simple as taking regular
walks - just the two of
them together.
Each person is unique
in his or her need for af-
fection. Rather than de-
manding affection, one
can ask oneself, ‘what
can I do to make my part-
ner feel more affection-
ate towards me?”
Sincere expressions
that enhance the self-
worth of one’s partner
are reinforcing. When
one makes his / her part-
ner feel important, any
misunderstanding, if
there is, melts and helps
them bare the depths of
their heart.
One husband candidly
admits, “I became emo-
tionally involved with
my work. When I would
come home, all I wanted
was to talk about the ex-
citing challenges of my
job. Though I would give
a casual hug to my wife,
my mind would be on
something else.”
Theresult–hiswifefelt
neglected and left out
since her husband was
insensitive to her emo-
tions. After a while, the
wifenolongercaredwhen
her husband poured out
his problems and she
would respond with indif-
ference. She distanced
herself emotionally
. De-
spite his being an able
provider and she, a capa-
ble mother, they had de-
prived each other of one
basic need – affection.
Lack of affection deep-
ly hurts as it makes a
husband and wife stran-
gers to each other emo-
tionally. One’s self-confi-
dence gets shattered.
Some partners suffer in
silence as if all is well.
But the body feels what
the brain chooses to ig-
nore. Constant pain,
headaches, knotted stom-
ach and depression re-
sult due to unresolved
conflicts and lack of to-
getherness.
Another husband ex-
pressed his feelings, “I
noticed when we were
alone, my wife showed
very little enthusiasm.
But as soon as someone
called or visited, she
would become excited,
ignoring me completely.
She acted as if she pre-
ferred the company of
others. I was crushed.”
A person may hesitate
to express his or her emo-
tional needs because of
fear of rejection or disil-
lusionment. Trying to
discern what is behind
the partner’s remarks
helps. Why is he/she tell-
ing me this? Is it due to
lack of affection or mere
thoughtlessness? Is extra
time needed to soothe
and ease matters?
By creating some qual-
ity time each day and by
sharing small everyday
happenings, understand-
ing improves in mar-
riage. Little things mean
a lot. They cement last-
ing relationships.
Thoughtful words, glanc-
es or meaningful actions
mean so much in keeping
the partnership warm.
Small expressions of
trust and dependability
can bring deep satisfac-
tion and keep the flames
of love burning.

MAHENG/2022/14652 l Vol 1 l Issue No. 49 BJP’s tacit political gambit matches ‘Shinde Sena’ Renni Abraham Mumbai: The Bharati- ya Janata Party (BJP) has offered the Deputy Chief Minister’s post to Maharashtra’s Ur- ban Development Min- ister Eknath Shinde, who has rebelled and claimed political con- trol over the Shiv Sena party, with the exclu- sion of Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray . The move is being seen as an effort to cobble to- gether a government in the state once again af- ter a gap of 2.5 years, even as the upper ech- elons of the BJP con- sciously maintain a stoic silence. Meanwhile, the Shin- de faction is expected to stake an official claim over the Shiv Sena after physically parading over 42 MLAs in front of Maharash- tra governor Bhagat- singh Koshiyari, as early as Thursday. “We have only pro- vided tacit assistance to the rebel Sena lead- ers, including at least three ministers, who were disgruntled with the unholy alliance with the NCP and Con- gress over the last 2.5 years. Shinde’s group is expected to stake claim to not only being the real Shiv Sena but also to the party sym- bol of Dhanush-Baan (bow and arrow). It is our understanding that 42 Sena MLAs are with Shinde along with in- dependents, taking their number to well over 50,” a senior BJP leader told First India. The BJP is taking a wait-and-watch ap- proach from here on, this person said, add- ing, “Shinde is only waiting u p o n a couple of technical and legal aspects and for- malities to be complet- ed before he presents himself, with Sena and independent MLAs in tow, before the Maharashtra gov- ernor as early as Thursday.” The Sena MLAs do not have prob- lems with CM Thackeray but definitely with NCP Chief Sharad Pa- war. EKNATH SHINDE MAY PARADE MLAS BEFORE GOVERNOR, STAKE CLAIM OVER SHIV SENA AND PARTY SYMBOL TOO ‘IMMATURE POLITICS’ Reacting to First India’s article that Enforcement Directorate cases against Sena (and MVA) leaders precipitated the sudden flight of the rebels out of Maharashtra, he further noted, “At best seven to eight MLAs were impacted by ED notices; immature politics has brought about the state of affairs within the Shiv Sena today. When Sena MP Sanjay Raut said that at worst his party will collapse, he only further ensured that the fence-sitting Sena MLAs also made a beeline for Guwahati.” OUR EDITIONS: JAIPUR, LUCKNOW, NEW DELHI & MUMBAI BSE SENSEX 52,265.72 443.19 | NSE NIFTY 15,556.65 143.35 SENIOR IPS OFFICER DINKAR GUPTA APPOINTED NIA CHIEF ED ASKS SONIA GANDHI TO DEPOSE LATE JULY SENIOR IPS OFFICER DINKAR GUPTA WAS THURSDAY APPOINTED DIRECTOR GENERAL OF THE NATIONAL INVESTIGATION AGENCY (NIA), A PERSONNEL MINISTRY ORDER SAID. NEWS MUMBAI | FRIDAY, JUNE 24, 2022 02 www.firstindia.co.in I www.firstindia.co.in/epapers/mumbai I twitter.com/thefirstindia I facebook.com/thefirstindia I instagram.com/thefirstindia As haemorrhage continues, 6 more MLAs, MLC fly to Assam First India Bureau Surat: Amid political turmoil in Maharash- tra following a revolt by Shiv Sena minister Eknath Shinde, six MLAs and an MLC from the neighbouring state arrived in Guja- rat’s Surat city on Thursday and were later flown to Guwa- hati in Assam, where party rebels are camp- ing, in two chartered flights, sources said. Apart from the six MLAs, Shiv Sena MLC Ravindra Phatak also reached Guwahati in the BJP-ruled Assam from Surat, where dis- sidents were first camping after arriving from Mumbai on Mon- day night, to join the rebel camp. Notably, Phatak was part of a two-member delegation sent by Ma- harashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray on Tuesday to hold discussions with Shinde and other rebel Sena MLAs in Su- rat to find a solution to the political crisis which has pushed the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government to the brink. As per passenger de- tails accessed by the media, Phatak along with Shiv Sena MLAs Dadaji —Agriculture Minister in the MVA government —Bhuse and Sanjay Rathod left for Guwahati in a char- tered flight from Surat on Thursday afternoon. In the morning, four other MLAs—Mangesh Kudalkar, Ashish Jaiswal, Sada Sarvankar, and Deepak Keskar—reached the North-eastern city in another chartered plane from Surat, sourc- es said, citing the flight passenger list. Shinde is currently camping with 37 rebel MLAs of the Sena and nine independents in a Guwahati hotel. Ravindra Phatak, Thackeray’s emissary to rebels also heads to Guwahati to join them TROJAN HORSE? The Shiv Sena on Tuesday removed Shin- de as the party’s group leader in the Assembly, hours after he revolted and and travelled to Su- rat in Gujarat with some Shiv Sena MLAs, triggering a crisis in the tripartite Maha Vi- kas Aghadi (MVA-com- prising the Sena, NCP and Congress) govern- ment in Maharashtra. “I have received a let- ter from the Shiv Sena, informing me that it is appointing Ajay Choud- hary as the party’s lead- er in the Assembly and removing Shinde from the post with immediate effect,” Zirwal told re- porters on Thursday . “I have accepted the letter, which was sent by Chief Minister Ud- dhav Thackeray,” the deputy speaker said, adding that Shinde’s re- movalastheSenagroup leader in the Assembly was valid. Notably, Shinde had on Wednesday given a letter to the deputy speaker, signed by 34 MLAs, replacing Sunil Prabhu with Bharat Gogavale as the chief whip of the Shiv Sena legislature party . Renni Abraham Mumbai: Even as po- litical turmoil within the Shiv Sena party has spilled over, the Congress party is still reconciling itself to the fact that seven of its MLAs cross-voted in the Vidhan Pari- shad elections June 20, in defiance of the de- fied the party diktat. “Seven Congress MLAs defied the party directive for the Vid- han Parishad polls. Two to four MLAs even cross-voted for the wrong Congress candi- date. We had allotted 29 votes for Chandrakant Handore, who needed 26 to win but got only 22. The mischief took place at a very high level in the party,” a senior Congress leader told First India. With Handore allot- ted 29 votes, Bhai Jag- tap should have re- ceived the remaining 15 Congress MLA votes, still short of eight votes to win. “Seven Congress MLAs definitely voted for Jagtap instead of Handore, whose candi- dature was decided at the high-command lev- el. Rajya Sabha member KC Venugopal and Ma- harashtra public works department’s Congress Minister Ashok Chavan were entrusted the task to ensure the Congress Dalit candidate emerged victorious just like in the Rajya Sabha elections when Imran Pratapgarhi got all the 44 Congress first prefer- ence votes,” this person added. The Congress leader noted that Mallikarjun Kharge, the overseer designated by the high command for the Vid- han Parishad polls, did not have a hands-on role in the process. “This will have seri- ous consequences for the Congress party, not only in the forthcoming BMC elections in Mum- bai but also, across the state; already Dalit sen- timents are being roused against the par- ty for having let down Handore’s candida- ture.” While the Congress high command has been informed about the apparent violation of the party diktat for the Vidhan Parishad polls, party leaders in Maharashtra are left wondering whether a political recovery is even possible at this point. As Shiv Sena faces break-up, Congress rues Handore’s loss MAJOR RAMIFICATIONS lll Deliberate cross- voting by 7 Cong MLAs against Dalit leader Chandrakant Handore may cost it dear in forthcoming civic elections in Mumbai, and rest of Maharashtra Chandrakant Handore suffered a surprise loss in the recent MLC polls. —FILE PHOTO Rebel Shiv Sena leader Eknath Shinde is seen playing chess at a hotel, in Guwahati, on Thursday. Addressing the media in Mumbai, Patil re- called how he walked fora long distance near the Maharashtra-Guja- rat border, then got a lift on a two-wheeler and a truck to reach Maha- rashtra in the wee hours of Tuesday . Patil said after he cast his vote in Mumbai on June 20 for the Maha- rashtra Legislative Council polls, he was calledtoShinde’sbunga- low in Thane. The MLA from Osa- manabad said he along with some others were taken to Thane mayor’s bungalow, where their cars were changed be- fore proceeding further. “One of his (Shinde’s) staff was with me and we crossed Vasai-Virar. I don’t know much about the area, but as we reached the (Maharash- tra-Gujarat)checkpost,I realized that I was being taken in a different di- rection,” he said. “When the cars stopped, the staff mem- bersaidtherewascheck- ing at the post and told me to take a little walk. I opened the car door and saw there was a huge traffic jam,” Patil said. After getting out of the car, the MLA crossed the lane and got onto the road going towards Mumbai, he said, recall- ing that he also got drenched in the rain at that time. “There may be some MLAs who want to re- turn, but are unable to come back due to pres- sure or other problems,” he claimed. I walked between trucks for about 1km. I asked a biker for a lift, but he re- fused. Later, another person helped me and left me at a ho- tel, 3-4km away from the check post. Eventually, a truck driver gave me a ride till the Dahisar toll plaza (naka). —Kailas Patil, Sena MLA Rebels counter ‘forcibly taken’ claim with photos First India Bureau Mumbai: The Eknath Shinde-led rebel fac- tion of the Shiv Sena on Thursday released photographs of Sena MLA Nitin Desh- mukh who returned to Maharashtra a day ago and alleged that he was forcibly taken to Surat in Gujarat. Addressing a press conference here, Desh- mukh alleged that he was taken to Surat and when he realised the conspiracy against the Maha Vikas Aghadi government he tried to run away but was caught by Surat Police. Shirsat, the MLA fromAurangabad(West) Assembly constituency, in a three-page letter dated June 22, claimed that despite the Shiv Sena being in power, the coterie around Thack- erayneverallowedthem access to “Varsha”, the CM’s official residence. There was no question of going to the state sec- retariat, becausetheCM never came there, he said. Shirsat said Eknath Shinde opened doors for the party MLAs. The letter was posted by dissident leader Shinde on his Twitter handle, claiming these were the sentiments of the Sena MLAs. While the Shiv Sena legislators had no ac- cess to the chief minis- ter, the Congress and NCP, which are the “real opponents” of the Shiv Sena, were getting all the attention, Shirsat claimed in his letter, adding that par- ty MLAs were not al- lowed to accompany cabinet minister Aadi- tya Thackeray (the CM’s son) to Ayodhya. Cops stand guard outside ‘Varsha’, the official residence of CM and Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray, in Mumbai on Thursday.

According to Deputy Superintendent of Po- lice, ACB Raigad, Sush- maSonawane, anoffence has been registered against the accused un- der the provisions of the Prevention of Corrup- tion Act. HCjunksRanepleaagainstBMCorder First India Bureau Mumbai: The Bom- bay High Court on Thursday dismissed the plea filed by Un- ion Minister Narayan Rane by saying that it did not appear to be a case of political ven- detta. Rane had chal- lenged the Brihan- mumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) order that rejected an application for regu- larization of alleged unauthorized por- tions of his residen- tial bungalow in sub- urban Juhu. A bench led by Jus- tice RD Dhanuka said Rane’s plea, which had claimed political ven- detta behind the civic body order, was “devoid of merits and deserved to be dismissed.” It, however, stayed the implementation of its order for six weeks af- ter Rane’s lawyer, sen- ior counsel Milind Sathe, sought time to file an appeal against the HC order. The bench also re- strained the BMC from taking any coercive action against Rane, a BJP leader, vis-a-vis the Juhu bungalow for the same period of six weeks. Rane approached the HC on Wednesday chal- lenging the order passed by the BMC on April 07 rejecting his application for regular- ization and retention of some portions of the bungalow, which, as per the civic body, were in breach of municipal and coast zone norms. The BMC, through senior counsel Aspi Chinoy, and advocate Joel Carlos submitted that Rane had made changes to open areas and converted them into usable, closed structures. It also said that while the Union minister had been granted an occu- pation certificate in 2013 for his bungalow that was constructed over an area of 745 sq m, the structure cur- rently had stretched the FSI limits to three times of what had initially been approved. The HC, however, said the BMC was right in not regularizing Rane’s additional con- struction and changes made at the bungalow since he had already used up all the FSI granted to him at the time of approval of his sanction plan. “Since the construc- tion is totally unauthor- ized, a question of po- litical rivalry between the Shiv Sena (headed by Uddhav Thackeray) and any other party be- ing behind the BMC no- tices does not arise,” the HC said. FSI PERMIT The Supreme Court has held in several judgements that all applications for regu- larization have to be decided only in ac- cordance with the law. In the present case, the BMC cannot consider the entire plot for granting extra FSI when the occupation certificate was granted for 745 sq m of area only. —Bombay High Court Court says there is no political vendetta involved in rejection of regularization of his Juhu bungalow Union Minister Narayan Rane — FILE PHOTO HC asks govt about preservation of Ambedkar’s scripts First India Bureau Mumbai: The Bom- bay High Court on Thursday asked the Maharashtra gov- ernment what steps it was taking to pre- serve and maintain the original hand- written scripts of social reformers Dr Babasaheb Ambed- kar and Jyotiba Phule. A division bench comprising Justice PB Varale and Justice SD Kulkarni was hearing a petition taken up suo motu in December 2021, after the media reported that the Maharashtra government had halt- ed its project of pub- lishing the literature of Ambedkar. On Thursday , advo- cate Swaraj Jadhav, appointed to assist the court, informed the HC that most of the original hand- written manuscripts of Ambedkar and Phule were stored in a small and dingy room in an old build- ing in south Mumbai. With the onset of the monsoon, there is a strong likelihood that the papers may get spoilt, leading to permanent irrevers- ible damage, he fur- ther said. Government plead- er Purnima Kantha- ria told the court that the government would be filing its af- fidavit. The bench then asked Kantharia to also say in the affida- vit what steps the gov- ernment is taking to preserve the scripts. The court posted the matter for further hearing after four weeks. As monsoon prevails, the Dalit freedom fighter’s handwritten notes may be damaged Anil Parab appears before ED for 3rd consecutive day First India Bureau Mumbai: Maharash- tra Transport Minis- ter Anil Parab ap- peared before the En- forcement Directo- rate (ED) in the city on Thursday for the third day in a row, in connection with a money laundering case registered against him by the agency. The ED has been questioning him in the money laundering probe linked to the al- leged violation of coast- al regulation zone pro- visions in the construc- tion of Sai Resort in Dapoli beach area of the state’s Ratnagiri district, he said. Earlier, the ED had questioned Parab for more than six hours on Wednesday and for over 10 hours on Tuesday . The vehicle caught fire near the Charoti toll naka in Manor area of Palghar district around 6.15 am when it was on its way to Ahmedabad in Gujarat from Mumbai, said a fire brigade official. After being alerted, local firemen and police rushed to the spot, but the truck was complete- ly gutted by that time, he said. The fire was later doused and the vehicle was removed from the spot. A fire brigade official said they suspect that a short-circuit in the truck led to the blaze, but the exact cause was still not known. Short-circuit thought to be primary reason; traffic disrupted on Mumbai-Ahmedabad highway Sarfaraz’s century propels Mumbai to 374 on Day 02 Kushan Sarkar Bengaluru: In blazing form this season, Mumbai’s Sarfaraz Khan hit a superb cen- tury that kept his side ahead against Madhya Pradesh in the Ranji Trophy final, being played in Bengaluru, on Thursday . Courtesy Sarfaraz’s fourth hundred of the season 134 off 243 balls -- the 41-time champions managed a fighting 374 in their first innings af- ter beginning the day at 248 for five. But Madhya Pradesh won’t be too unhappy as they finished the second day at 123 for one with Yash Dubey (44 not out) and Shubham Sharma (41 not out) adding 76 runs for the unbroken second wicket. The day belonged to Sarfaraz, who has now scoredanastounding937 runs in Ranji Trophy in just six games and could make it 1,000 for the sea- son if Mumbai bats again in this match. His innings had 13 boundaries and two huge sixes. But what stood out was how he managed the innings af- ter Shams Mulani was trapped leg before by Gourav Yadav (4/106) in the opening over of the second day . The manner in which Sarfaraz has turned a corner since the 2019-20 season (928 runs back then) is phenomenal as he had disciplinary is- sues early in his career, which also forced him to leave Mumbai for a season. With father Naushad Khan, who also doubles up as his coach, making him play 400 balls (near- ly 67 overs including nets and knocking) a day at practice, Sarfar- az 2.0 is a battle-hard- ened man, the khadoos street fighter that any captain would want to go to a war with. HIGHLIGHTS At 937 runs from six Ranji Trophy games, the batsman could reach 1,000 if Mumbai bat again in this match Sarfaraz Khan celebrates after scoring his century on Day 02 of the Ranji Trophy final against Madhya Pradesh at M Chinnaswamy Stadium, in Bengaluru, Thursday. —PTI PHOTO

SPIRITUAL SPEAK Be not quick in your spirit to become angry, for anger lodges in the heart of fools. —Bible IN-DEPTH haratiya Janata Par- ty has outplayed the Opposition by field- ing Draupadi Mur- mu, former Jharkhand Governor, as its can- didate for Presidential poll. The choice helps its tribal push and is acceptable to its allies. Mur- mu is the first tribal, a Santhal, and the second woman after Pratibha Patil to be in line to succeed Ram Nath Kovind in Rashtrapati Bhawan. Being from Odisha, Murmu has the support of Biju Janata Dal. She also has the backing of YSRCP of Andhra Pradesh which gives BJP the confidence of winning the contest. The only doubt is about Jharkhand Mukti Morcha but it is likely to vote for Murmu much against the wishes of Con- gress, JMM’s ally in Jharkhand. If JMM votes for Murmu the Opposition will have to rework its strategy for unity but only after the Presidential election is over. In the meantime, Opposi- tion’s candidate Yashwant Sin- ha, the former Union Finance Minister, will be disappointed at not getting JMM’s votes which he is hopeful of. TOP TWEETS B knath Shinde has upstaged his lead- er Uddhav Thack- eray . Well, almost. The Shiv Sena leg- islator has weaned away 42 MLAs, including some Inde- pendents, and has technically reduced the Maha Vikas Aghadi government to a mi- noritywithonly15MLAs.The numbers with Eknath Shinde are more than required to avoid the anti-defection law. Shinde’s next move should be to approach Governor Bhagat Singh Koshiyari to call for a floor test. Bringing down the MVA government is ostensi- bly not the purpose of the re- bellion. Shinde group wants Thackeray to part company withtheNationalistCongress Party and the Congress as ideologically Shiv Sena is closertotheBharatiyaJanata Party . In a conciliatory move Shiv Sena’s Sanjay Raut has asked the rebels to return to Mumbai and the party will consider their condition. Having gone this far, what will Eknath Shinde’s next move be? The India-SouthAfricaT20Iseries ended with 2 wins apiece. Cricketloverswerehopingfor a cracker of a contest in the finalmatchbutthatwasnotto be as the game was called off with barely three overs bowled in the series decider. Despite ending on a disap- pointing note, the series had several positive takeaways for the Men in Blue ahead of the T20 World Cup later this year. COMEBACK BY DINESH KARTHIK The remarkable comeback by Dinesh Karthik was the most heart-warming aspect for In- dian fans. Enjoying a second windtohiscareer,Karthikhad returned to Team India after three years on the back of somesterlingperformancesin theIPL.Butmanywonderedif he could replicate his IPL suc- cess in Indian colours against a strong South African side. Karthik, however, carried his IPL form into the interna- tional arena and scored at a hugely impressive rate of 158.62 against the Proteas. Warming up with an unbeat- en 30 off 21 balls in the sec- ond match, Karthik smashed a magical 55 off 27 balls in the fourth game. Given his power-packed shows, voices are growing for Karthik’s in- clusion in the T20 World Cup squad as many believe that he can play the role of fin- isher to near-perfection. HARDIK PANDYA’S PERFORMANCE Like Karthik, Hardik Pandya too made an impactful return to Team India. After leading Gujarat Titans to victory in IPL 2022, Hardik made cru- cialcontributionsallthrough the series. After a blistering 31 off 12 balls in the opening game in Delhi, he hit another 30-plus score in the game at Vizag. Also, in the Rajkot game, he made a vital 46 off 31 balls enabling India to re- cover from a dicey 81 for four. Another major plus is Is- han Kishan’s form. Despite being the costliest buy in the IPL auction at 15.25 crores, the young opener was rather unimpressive in the Mumbai Indians’ disastrous IPL cam- paign this year. But the tal- ented left-hander turned things around against South Africa and was the top run- getter, hammering 206 runs at an average of 41.20 and a terrific strike rate of 150.36. ON THE BOWLING SIDE On the bowling side, veteran pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar posed a lot of challenges to South African batters. Till a few months ago, Bhuvi’s abil- ity to swing the ball seemed to have gone missing and his place in Team India appeared doubtful. But he rediscov- ered his bite and stifled most Proteas batters and was even- tually named the ‘Player of the Series’. If Bhuvi looked like a bowler reborn, Harshal Patel was also impressive and can aspire for a T20 World Cup berth. Besides bagging seven wickets, it was great to see how he learnt from his mis- takes. Even young pacer Avesh Khan displayed his wares with skill. Despite some former cricketers ask- ing for his exit from the play- ing XI, the team management stood firm and Avesh repaid their trust in Rajkot by bag- ging 4/18 in a hostile spell and seems ready to serve In- dian cricket in the long run. Beyond the positives, there were a few areas of concern as well. Rishabh Pant’s form was possibly the biggest wor- ry . The middle-order was a point of concern as not only Pant but even Shreyas Iyer keptstrugglingtostrikeform. As the first-choice T20I wick- et-keeper currently, Pant’s form is worrying and as the stand-in skipper too, his cap- taincy left a lot to be desired. SELECTION OF PLAYERS Inaddition,thesame11players were picked for all five match- es, with stability being the name of the game. The refusal to change players implied that youngseamerslikepacesensa- tionUmranMalikandleft-arm Arshdeep Singh didn’t play a singlegame.Whileconsistency in selections is a laudable poli- cy , both the young pacers de- served a look in. In particular, denying a debut to 22-year-old Umran who regularly clocked over 150 in IPL games, seems like a major chance missed on home grounds. THE VIEWS EXPRESSED BY THE AUTHOR ARE PERSONAL A Overall, squaring a series with South Africa despite the absence of several stars like Rohit, Virat, K L Rahul, Bumrah and Jadeja seems an impressive feat. Under Rahul Dravid’s mentorship, Team India sure seems to be moving in the right direction to come up trumps in the T20 World Cup in Australia. The nucleus of a strong squad and players who could get World Cup spots seems to be progressing smoothly After a phenomenal comeback from being 2-0 down and the series decider on the line, the Indian team watched Rain Gods playing spoilsport in Bengaluru last Sunday. Political science books are also being changed. It is not that books are being changed for the first time but for the first time books are be- ing changed in such an calm and easy manner. Ear- lier there was a pro- cess to replace the books. A team of writers and editors worked on it. The changes were made keeping in mind the totality of the subject. Care was taken that the change in the book of a subject should be in such a way that in spite of the change, it would be consistent. It should not seem that suddenly something has been removed in the middle. Howev- er, this time thi ‘care’ is not being followed, as with- out consideration, random parts are being removed, af- fecting the totality of the subject. Changes have been made in many NCERT books. The chapters about the rulers of the Delhi Sultanate and the Mughal period have been shortened. But shortening does not mean that chapters are written anew, only random parts have been removed. Its purpose is that students do not know or know little about certain things. Instead, it would have been better if they were rewritten about those subjects in an objective way. It helps the students to form their own point of view. Even if the BJP has to make history and political science books according to its ideology, then writing every chap- ter anew was a bet- ter solution. Just like the books made during the Congress rule also have a chapter on Emergency. DOES BJP NOT KNOW THE SUBTLE, STRATEGIC WAY OF CHANGING CONTENT IN BOOKS? While the offi- cial travel plan has meetings scheduled with Union ministers, Bommai himself did not comment on the purpose of the visit, un- like in the past. Sources in the Chief Minister’s Office indicated that the official purpose was that Bommai was to be among the proposers of NDA presidential can- didate Droupadi Mur- mu. When Rahul Gandhi was called by the En- forcement Directorate (ED) for questioning about the alleged irreg- ularities in the Nation- al Herald case, the en- tire Congress party took to the streets. Keep in mind this matter is very old and the Con- gress has gone to the Supreme Court to get the matter dismissed. But even in the court it did not get relief. This case was also started by Subramanian Swamy, who had once brought down the government of Atal Bihari Vajpayee by upporting Jay- alalithaa with Sonia Gandhi. So it is not a very simple matter of political revenge of the government. So when all the top leaders of Congress came out on the road, their message went that Congress leaders are de- voted to only one family . Their allegiance is not to the people, but to the family. Secondly, the BJP also got an opportu- nity to say that the Con- gress party is agitating to defend the Nehru- Gandhi family in the matter of corruption. In fact, the Congress has to fight this battle in court. Congress should remember how the SIT set up for the Gujarat riots questioned the then Chief Minister of Gujarat Narendra Modi for hours. Modi had qui- etly gone to the SIT’s of- fice and joined the inter- rogation. If instead of taking to the road in protest against Rahul’s appearance before the ED, Congress would have taken to the road in protest against the bulldozers going on people’s homes in Ut- tar Pradesh or strug- gled on the road like this on the issue of in- flation, poverty and unemployment, com- mon people would con- nect more with it. But the Congress party is fighting all such bat- tles on Twitter. Congress’ bizarre strategy: Fight real issues on social media, protest against ‘first family’s’ issues on roads! New Delhi (ANI): PM Narendra Modi on Thursday inaugurated the new premises of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry – ‘Vanijya Bhawan’. Besides, Modi also launched a new portal called NIRYAT– a one-stop place for all info needed for India’s foreign trade. During the inaugural ceremony, Modi said this new premise and the portal are a symbol of both physical and digital infrastructure, and it would reflect In- dia’s aspiration of ‘Atma Nirbhar Bharat’ or a self-reliant India. He went on to say that providing ‘Ease of Access’ to citizens is In- dia’s priority, and ac- cess to govt policy for- mulations and banking to the citizens were the key facets of the past 8 years’ governance mod- el. Further, the benefits of the government schemes reaching all sections of people, without any form of discrimination, can only ensure ‘Sabka Vi- kas’ or welfare for all, he said. Giving reference to the previous govern- ments, he said that pro- jects were earlier an- nounced for the sake of “political interest” but there were no guaran- tees about the comple- tion of such projects. “They were not seri- ous about the comple- tion of the projects. This new building (get- ting completed on time) is an example of how we have changed the mindset,” Modi said. Government’s projects completed on time, and schemes reaching their goals are nothing but giving respect to the taxpayers of the coun- try, he said. “When govt projects complete on time and schemes reach target are nothing but giving respect to the country’s taxpayers. Under PM Gati Shakti national master plan, we now have a modern plat- form…Keeping into consideration the aspi- rations of new India, this building will have to give a push to all as- pects of development,” Modi said. The growth would be paced by digital media and advertising through deeper pene- tration of the internet and mobile devices in the domestic market, along with traditional media, which will hold their steady growth, the report said. TV advertising is ex- pected to reach over `43,000 crore by 2026. It will make India the fifth-largest TV adver- tising market globally, after the US, Japan, China and the UK. The Indian media and entertainment in- dustry is expected to be around `3.14 crore in 2022, registering an overall growth of 11.4%, as per the PwC’s Global Enter- tainment Media Outlook 2022-2026. India’s OTT Video services are expected to become a `21,031 crore industry in the next four years by 2026, in which `19,973 crore would come from sub- scription-based servic- es and `1,058 crore from Transactional VOD (video on demand). “It is subscription services that are driv- ing this rapid growth, accounting for 90.5% of revenue in 2021 and set to account for 95% in 2026,” it said. The population size and widespread use of mobile-led Internet video will underpin rapid growth in the OTT market over the forecast period. In particular, up- take of 5G will permit low-latency services such as OTT video streams, greatly boost- ing the sector. BOOM BY YEAR 2026 Media industry likely to touch `4.30 lakh cr India to grow by 7-7.8% in FY23:Experts ...ON THE BACK OF BETTER AGRICULTURE PRODUCTION New Delhi (PTI): The Indian econo- my can grow by 7-7.8% this fiscal on the back of better agriculture produc- tion and a revital- ised rural economy amid global head- winds mainly due to the ongoing Rus- sia-Ukraine war, eminent econo- mists said. Eminent econo- mist and BR Ambed- kar School of Eco- nomics (BASE) Vice- Chancellor NR Bha- numurthy said at present Indian econ- omy is facing multi- ple headwinds large- ly from external sources. Noting that global inflationary pres- sures and the Russia- Ukraine war have brought in risks to the economy, which is otherwise strong with all the domes- tic macro funda- mentals being well managed, he said unlike advanced economies, India’s Covid stimulus measures, especially the fiscal policy in- terventions, are less inflationary and rather growth-en- hancing. “With bet- ter agricultural pro- duction and revital- ised rural economy India should touch 7% growth in the current year despite global headwinds,” Bhanumurthy said. Echoing similar views, eminent econ- omist and ISID direc- tor Nagesh Kumar said the high-fre- quency indicators point to a robust growth momentum carrying through 2022-23 with a real GDP growth some- where between 7-7.8%. French econ- omist Guy Sorman said India could be severely impacted by the high cost of en- ergy and fertilis- er imports. Global headwinds pose risks New Delhi (PTI): The World Bank has cut India’s economic growth forecast for the current fiscal to 7.5% as rising inflation, supply chain disruptions, and geopolitical ten- sions taper recovery. India’s economy grew 8.7% in the last fiscal (2021-22) against a 6.6% contrac- tion in the previous year. Nagesh Kumar noted that the global headwinds of rising commodity prices do pose downside risks for the Indian economic outlook as the CPI levels are elevated. “Yet, I do not think that India is heading towards stagflation, given that the growth momentum seems quite robust,” Kumar argued. According to Guy Sorman, inflation has become a global phenomenon, caused by unanimous poor money management, an excess of public expenses (largely justified to compen- sate for Covid-19), and low-interest rates. “The monetary bubble is exploding everywhere. India is not different,” he pointed out. Govt aim to keep FY23 fiscal deficit at 2021 level New Delhi (Agen- cies): India’s govern- ment will not be able to cut its budget deficit this fiscal year as previ- ously projected, offi- cials said, but will seek to cap the shortfall at last year’s level to pre- vent a major deteriora- tion in public finances. Efforts to maintain some fiscal discipline reflect New Delhi’s concern around risks to its sovereign credit rating but will likely limit the government’s firepower to contain inflation and provide relief to households and businesses. In February, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government set a fiscal deficit target of 6.4% of gross do- mestic output (GDP) for the year that start- ed on April 1, com- pared with a deficit of 6.7% last year. The sources said that while increased spend- ing to provide relief from inflation meant the government would miss this year’s target, policymakers would seek to limit the devia- tion to 30 basis points. “We will try to con- tain the slippage to last year’s levels,” one of the officials said. Investment through P-notes declines New Delhi (PTI): In- vestment in the Indian capitalmarketsthrough participatory notes (P- notes) dropped to `86,706 crore till May- end from the preceding month, while experts say foreign investors will reverse their sell- ing stance and return to the country’s equities in the com- ing 1-2 q u a r t e r s . Acc to Sebi d a t a , the val- ue of P-note invest- ments in Indian mar- kets — equity, debt, and hybrid securities — stood at `86,706 crore at May-end compared to `90,580 crore at April- end. Of the total `86,706 crore invested through the route till May 2022, `77,402 crore was in- vested in equi- ties, `9,209 crore in d e b t , and `101 cr in hy- brid se- curities. The company in a late night filing on June 22, said that the DoT on June 15, has raised adjusted gross revenue (AGR) de- mand for additional two financial years beyond 2016-17, which were not covered un- der the Supreme court order on the statutory dues. Vodafone Idea (VIL) in the filing said that its board of directors “has approved the ex- ercise of the option of deferment of the AGR related dues by a pe- riod of four years with immediate effect, in accordance with the said DoT Letter. The amount of the AGR related dues as stated in the said DoT Letter is `8,837 crores which is subject to revision on account of disposal of various representa- tions”. The industry’s reac- tion came after the concerns raised by several FMCG compa- nies recently that the paper required for making straws is not available in India, ne- cessitating imports, and that it will take time to have enough domestic capacity to meet the demand. Terming it as “factu- ally incorrect”, the In- dian Paper Manufac- turers Association President A S Mehta said a “wrong impres- sion” is being created that presently there is no Indian paper mill that can manufacture the required paper for making paper straws and opposed any ex- tension of the dead- line on this pretext. First India Bureau Mumbai: Tata Power announced that it has set up 150 “green energy-powered” EV charging points across residential so- cieties, malls, com- mercial complexes and petrol pumps in Mumbai. These chargers are powered by renewa- ble/clean energy sources like wind, so- lar, and hydropower. “The initiative is in line with Tata Power’s ‘Do Green’ mission, which aims to inspire its consumers to use green and sustainable energy solutions in their daily lives” said Tata Power president Sanjay Banga. Tata Power and the National Real Estate Development Council (NAREDCO), Maha- rashtra, have also worked together to es- tablish up to 5,000 EV charging stations around Maharashtra. Over 200 electric bus charging stations, as well as more than 13,000 home chargers (for private use), are de- ployed throughout In- dia by Tata Power. The company has consist- ently worked to provide green services to the residents of Mumbai through its various green solutions, which include green electric- ity, solar rooftop, DSM Programs, and home automation. More than 17,000 cli- ents in Mumbai have chosen green electric- ity as of this writing, which has reduced about 126 kilotonnes of carbon emissions. Controversial POCSO circular withdrawn by Maharashtra govt First India Bureau Mumbai: The Maha- rashtra government on Thursday in- formed the Bombay High Court that the circular requiring prior permission for registration of cases under Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and molestation laws has been withdrawn. However, a notifica- tion to that effect, is yet to be issued. A division bench comprising Justice Ni- tin Jamdar and Justice NR Borkar clarified that the subject matter of the petition was as- signed to a different bench. And hence, it was not to be presented before them. A petition was filed by a city resident re- cently seeking quash- ing of the circular by contending that it was arbitrary . On June 06, Mumbai Police Commissioner Sanjay Pandey had is- sued a circular, which said a FIR for molesta- tion or under the POC- SO Act should be regis- tered only upon a rec- ommendation by an ACP and after receiving permission of the DCP of the zone. The reason then cited for the direc- tive was that many times false cases of such offences are regis- tered due to disputes over property , money or because of personal feuds. However, the Nation- al Commission for Pro- tection of Child Rights (NCPCR) had sought withdrawal of the or- der, saying it will vio- late the rights of sexual abuse victims. Pandey had later said if majority feels other- wise, the directive can be reconsidered. The Bombay High Court, on June 09, had askedthegovernmentif the controversial circu- lar issued by the Mum- baipolicecommissioner could be withdrawn. MOVE COMES AFTER WIDESPREAD OUTCRY OVER VIOLATION OF RIGHTS OF SEXUAL ABUSE VICTIMS Mumbaicityalmost outofpotablewater duetoweakrains? First India Bureau Mumbai: This year’s monsoon has been unusual. According to data from the In- dia Meteorological Department (IMD), the Mumbai city and suburbs experienced significant rainfall deficits in June this year, with most moni- toring stations, in- cluding the San- tacruz base station, receiving only half of the average pre- cipitation amount for this period. Now, In a shocking turn of events, data from the Brihanmum- bai Municipal Corpora- tion (BMC) has indicat- ed a possible shortage of potable water in Mumbai, with water stocks only enough to last the city 38 days. While Mumbai re- ceived some good spells of rain since last week, the catchment lakes in and around the city have suffered a distinct lack of continuous rain- fall. These city lifelines catch and supply fresh water to the region, and their water stocks have now dropped to less than 10% of what is re- quired. According to IMD forecasts, however, there is hope as the en- tire Konkan belt— which includes the city of Mumbai—is slated to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall in iso- lated areas over the next five days. This has also resulted in the city being put under a yel- low watch status advis- ing residents to ‘be up- dated’ till Saturday, June 25. To go without a water cut, Mumbai must have at least 14.47 lakh mil- lion litres of water in reserve by October 01. However, currentstocks lie at a meagre 1.43 mn ltr in the seven lakes of the city. For reference, last June’s total water stocks stood at 2 lakh mn ltr or roughly 15%. BMC officials are hopeful that rainfall this week will help re- plenish the water stock. Mumbai: The arrival of south-west monsoon in Mumbai and the Konkan region has brought some respite from the heat wave conditions which were prevailing earlier. According to IMD official, KS Hosalikar, active monsoon conditions will prevail over Maharashtra and the rainfall warning (orange alert) will continue for next 5 days for Maharash- tra. Also severe weather warnings have been given for Konkan including Mumbai, Thane and near by regions. As per reports, cloudy sky with moderate rain in the city and suburbs is expected to stay. MARITAL BLUES SHOWING AFFECTION guest at a wed- ding observed the bride and the b r i d e g r o o m warmly exchang- ing loving glanc- es and tenderly holding on to each other! No one could deny that they were deeply in love! As the newlyweds graceful- ly moved together, the guest wondered how long would their marriage stand the test of time? As the years go by, will their love deepen or will it take wings and fly away? What happens to “love” after one gets mar- ried? One husband said, “It was wonderful before we got married, but somehow after the wed- ding, it fell apart. All the love I thought I had for her and the love she seemed to have for me evaporated.” When it is unswerving and enduring, the love be- tween a man and a wom- an can truly be beautiful. Since there are so many breakups, one can realis- tically ask, whether last- ing love is possible! The true and abiding love between marriage partners includes affec- tion and attachment. Thus, love is best sensed when it is expressed. So, one must not allow the activities of daily life to prevent one from show- ing affection. It conveys to the other person care and protection – any problem one faces is im- portant to the other. It makes the marriage flourish. The pleasant memories of expressed affection enhance the un- failing quality of love. Someshowlessaffection as the years go by . Just as foodisessentialinkeeping the body healthy , affection strengthens the marriage. Even after decades of be- ingmarried, husbandsand wives need regular reas- surance from each other that they are cared for and valued each day . Using words like, “you are beautiful!” or “pre- cious” can make the part- ner feel cherished. Affec- tion can also be shown in writing through text mes- sages and e-mails. A lov- ing glance, an occasional gift, supporting one an- other and doing different tasks together can nour- ish the relationship. At times, busy hus- bands and wives regu- larly plan ‘date nights’ or ‘date weekends’ to be to- gether. They treat their partner as lovingly as they did when they were first dating. One can even plan to do something as simple as taking regular walks - just the two of them together. Each person is unique in his or her need for af- fection. Rather than de- manding affection, one can ask oneself, ‘what can I do to make my part- ner feel more affection- ate towards me?” Sincere expressions that enhance the self- worth of one’s partner are reinforcing. When one makes his / her part- ner feel important, any misunderstanding, if there is, melts and helps them bare the depths of their heart. One husband candidly admits, “I became emo- tionally involved with my work. When I would come home, all I wanted was to talk about the ex- citing challenges of my job. Though I would give a casual hug to my wife, my mind would be on something else.” Theresult–hiswifefelt neglected and left out since her husband was insensitive to her emo- tions. After a while, the wifenolongercaredwhen her husband poured out his problems and she would respond with indif- ference. She distanced herself emotionally . De- spite his being an able provider and she, a capa- ble mother, they had de- prived each other of one basic need – affection. Lack of affection deep- ly hurts as it makes a husband and wife stran- gers to each other emo- tionally. One’s self-confi- dence gets shattered. Some partners suffer in silence as if all is well. But the body feels what the brain chooses to ig- nore. Constant pain, headaches, knotted stom- ach and depression re- sult due to unresolved conflicts and lack of to- getherness. Another husband ex- pressed his feelings, “I noticed when we were alone, my wife showed very little enthusiasm. But as soon as someone called or visited, she would become excited, ignoring me completely. She acted as if she pre- ferred the company of others. I was crushed.” A person may hesitate to express his or her emo- tional needs because of fear of rejection or disil- lusionment. Trying to discern what is behind the partner’s remarks helps. Why is he/she tell- ing me this? Is it due to lack of affection or mere thoughtlessness? Is extra time needed to soothe and ease matters? By creating some qual- ity time each day and by sharing small everyday happenings, understand- ing improves in mar- riage. Little things mean a lot. They cement last- ing relationships. Thoughtful words, glanc- es or meaningful actions mean so much in keeping the partnership warm. Small expressions of trust and dependability can bring deep satisfac- tion and keep the flames of love burning.
