TMC may offer RS nomination to Suresh Prabhu, BJP unlikely
Devendra Fadnavis’s political coup in Maharashtra

Mumbai: The BJP has
pulled out a surprise
for the sixth Rajya Sab-
ha seat from Maharash-
tra, offering Chhatra-
pati Sambhaji Raje un-
conditional support-
-after the Shiv Sena
asked the descendent
of Maratha King
Chhatrapati Shivaji
Maharaj to seek his
nomination as their
party candidate.
Confirming this, a
senior BJP leader told
First India, “The BJP
was true to the Maratha
community before on
the reservations issue
and, now on the forth-
coming Rajya Sabha
polls. We gave a respect-
ful presidential nomi-
nation to Chhatrapati
Sambhaji Raje to the
Rajya Sabha for the last
six years. Now, the Shiv
Sena has ordered the
descendent of Chhatra-
pati Shivaji Maharaj to
join the party if he
wants a Rajya Sabha
nomination. The BJP,
on the other hand, has
offered the uncondi-
tional support of the
20-odd additional votes
from Maharashtra for
the descendent of
Chhatrapati Shivaji
Maharaj.”
BJP candidates had
won 105 state assembly
seats in the 2019 elec-
tions, and further added
to this tally by defeating
the NCP candidate to
win the Pandharpur as-
sembly by-election held
a year ago. As a result,
the party enjoys 106 in-
dividual votes, apart
from those of allies in
the 288-member state
legislative assembly of
Maharashtra. Even af-
ter 84 votes, the BJP
kitty will ensure the
election of two Rajya
Sabha seats (including
Union Minister Piyush
Goyal) the additional
20-odd votes have been
offered to Sambhaji
Raje unconditionally
.
This is in stark con-
trast to the Shiv Sena
offer, which mandates
Sambhaji Raje first join
the MVA alliance, as
Sena MP Sanjay Raut
specified on Saturday
after emerging from a
meeting with Uddhav
Thackeray at his pri-
vate residence Ma-
toshree. Even NCP
Chief Sharad Pawar
had initially indicated
an interest in support-
ing Chhatrapati Shivaji
Maharaj’s descendent
for his second consecu-
tive Rajya Sabha tenure
but later maintained a
stoic silence on the is-
sue.
BJP’s leader of oppo-
sition in Maharashtra,
Devendra Fadnavis
seems to have pulled
off a political coup of
sorts, as the social mes-
saging for the domi-
nant Maratha commu-
nity is loud and clear,
regarding where their
political interests lie
going ahead.

Mumbai: The All In-
dia Trinamool Con-
gress (TMC) may of-
fer a Rajya Sabha
nomination to
Bharatiya Janata Par-
ty (BJP) leader and
former Railways min-
ister Suresh Prabhu,
who is unlikely to get
a third term to the up-
per house through the
BJP.
Prabhu, who served
four terms as a Lok
Sabha member from
1996 to 2014, has com-
pleted his second
term in the upper
house. However,
sources said the party
may not offer a third
term to the 69-year-
old leader who served
in the Narendra Modi
cabinet in important
positions as Minister
of Railways, Minister
of Commerce and In-
dustry, and Minister
of Civil Aviation.
“Prabhu has had a
very long and satis-
factory stint in poli-
tics, beginning with
the Shiv Sena and
then migrating to the
BJP under the Atal
Behari Vajpayee Un-
ion Government.
Even the Modi Sarkar
deployed him to cru-
cial posts. It is true
that he has not been
in the best of health
and so the party may
not consider giving
him another tenure,”
a highly placed source
in the BJP confirmed.
Asking not to be
named since they are
not authorized to
speak to the press on
the issue, this person
added that even if
Prabhu was offered a
Rajya Sabha nomina-
tion by the TMC, he is
not likely to accept it.
When First India
contacted Prabhu at
his Delhi residence,
he declined to com-
ment on whether his
party had held dis-
cussions with him
regarding another
term. Asked if anoth-
er political party had
offered him an
RS nomination, he
said, “I don’t want to
comment on any of
this.”
Notably, the TMC
had recently fielded
former BJP leaders
Yashwant Sinha and
Shatrughan Sinha
from West Bengal for
by-elections to the
Lok Sabha. Efforts to
contact TMC Rajya
Sabha leader Derek
O’Brien failed to elic-
it any response.
PRABHU HAS SERVED IN KEY POSITIONS IN THE ATAL BIHARI VAJPAYEE AND NARENDRA MODI CABINETS
Offers unconditional support of 22
votes for Chhatrapati Sambhaji Raje’s

Chhatrapati Sambhaji Raje
Prabhu has
had a very long
and satisfacto-
ry stint in politics, begin-
ning with the Shiv Sena
and then migrating to
the BJP under the Atal

him to crucial posts. It is
true that he has not been

sider giving him another

NSE MANIPULATION CASE
CBI raids properties linked
to Chitra in Delhi, Mumbai,

New Delhi: The CBI
Saturday conducted
searches at multiple
locations in connec-

case against former
National Stock Ex-

said the raids are be-

“The searches are
being conducted at the
premises associated
with some stock bro-
kers who manipulated
the co-location facility
provided by the NSE
in connivance with its
officials,” a CBI offic-
er said.
The agency had last
month filed a

mer NSE COO Anand

CHITRA AND YOGI: THE CHAIN OF EVENTS

z The CBI had arrested
Subramanian and Ram-
krishna in February and
March, respectively.

z The agency regis-
tered the case in 2018
but action against the
two followed a report
of the Securities and
Exchange Board of India
(SEBI), which indicted
Ramkrishna for illegal
appointment of Subra-
manian and for alleg-
edly sharing confidential
information related
to the bourse with a
“Himalayan Yogi”.

z On February 11,
Ramkrishna was fined

Mumbai: Amravati
MP Navneet Rana and
MLA Ravi Rana were
issued another notice
on Saturday regard-
ing illegal construc-
tion in their house
located in the Khar
area of Mumbai, the
Brihanmumbai Mu-
nicipal Corporation
(BMC) said.
Rana couple them-
selves will have to re-
move illegal construc-
tion, otherwise, BMC
itself will get the demo-
lition done.
Unsatisfied with the
reply from the Rana
couple over the notice
on Friday, BMC again
sent the notice, seeking
a reply to the same and
asking them to submit it
within seven days of the
receipt of the notice.
The BMC had al-
ready sent a notice to
the couple under Sec-
tion 488 of the Mumbai

Act, 1888, according to
which, officials can
visit any building and
ascertain whether any
illegal alterations have

Thane: Maharashtra
Deputy Chief Minis-
ter Ajit Pawar has
called for imparting
quality education to
students of ashram
schools in the state,
to ensure they were
at par with their
counterparts in ur-
ban areas.
The senior National-
ist Congress Party
(NCP) leader was speak-
ing after inaugurating a
government ashram
school at Kothare of
Shahapur tehsil in
Thane district on Fri-
day
. Ashram schools are
residential schools for
tribal students.
“Like every-
one else, ed-
ucation is a
basic right
of tribal
communi-
ties. The
state gov-
e r n -
ment is putting in eve-
ry effort to bring the
students from tribal
areas at par with those
residing in cities and
towns,” said Pawar,
during his speech.
To provide quality
education to students
of ashram schools, the
process to recruit teach-
ers needs to be carried
out in a transparent
manner, he said.
The state govern-
ment wants to provide
world-class education
to ashram school stu-
dents, he said, adding
that these students
should be given such
training that they are
able to represent the
country at world
events.
“Just building ash-
ram schools will not be
sufficient,” he said.

Mumbai: The Shiv
Sena has expressed
concern over unre-
solved issues of the
Congress party at the
recently concluded
Chintan Shivir held
in Udaipur. “The Con-
gress has left its lead-
ership issue unre-
solved at the Chintan
Shivir held recently.
The party’s current
condition is misera-
ble, which is not good
for the country’s de-
mocracy,” it said on
Saturday.
In an editorial of its
party mouthpiece
‘Saamana’, the Shiv
Sena said that on one
hand, the Bharatiya
Janata Party (BJP) has
already begun prepa-
rations for the 2024
Lok Sabha elections,
and on the other hand,
the Congress party is
in dire straits.
“Rahul Gandhi
(Congress national
leader) has left several
issues unresolved at
the party’s Udaipur
conclave. That is the
reason several leaders
in different states are
deserting the party,”
said the party, which
currently shares pow-
er with the Nationalist
Congress Party (NCP)
and Congress in Maha-
rashtra.
The decision to
leave Congress by
leaders, including
Sunil Jakhar, Hardik
Patel, Jyotiraditya
Scindia and Jitin
Prasada, showcases
the failure of the par-
ty leadership, it
added.
However, Shiv Se-
na’s concern did not go
down well with the Ma-
harashtra Congress
chief Nana Patole.
“Congress is a thought
and several people
have come and gone.
Instead of focusing on
who leaves or joins
Congress, people
should worry about
the burning issues that
the country is facing,”
he said.

pound in Kurla.
The court has issued
a process against him
and the 1993 bomb blast
case accused Sardar

also named in the case.
The order copy men-
tioned, “It is alleged
that accused Nawab
Malik and members of
D Company criminally
conspired and had tak-
en unauthorized pos-
session/acquisition of
the above property. It
appears from the state-
ments that Sardar Khan
convicted in the Bom-
bay Bomb Blast case
was also part of the said
conspiracy. In lieu of
his assistance in usurp-
ing the property of Mu-
nira Plumber, he got a
covered area of around
368 sq mtr in Goawala
Compound and the
same was given to him
by Solidus Investments
Pvt. Ltd. For usurping
the above property,
members of D-Compa-
ny and accused Nawab
Malik, connived togeth-
er and executed several
legal documents to put
a facade of genuinity
over the criminal act.
To this end, Nawab Ma-

Mumbai: More than
1.1 lakh employees of
the Brihanmumbai
Municipal Corpora-
tion (BMC) effectively
lost their health in-
surance cover—hith-
erto provided under
United India Insur-
ance Co.’s Medical
Group Insurance
Scheme—in August
2017, when the civic
body moved its health-
care focus to individu-
al employees (barring
contract workers).
According to advo-
cate Prakash Devdas,
president of the work-
ers’ union, the firm had
provided medical
group insurance to civ-
ic workers for two
years—2015-16 and
2016-17—but suddenly
“discontinued the
scheme after negotia-
tions for the next fiscal
year broke down”.
“The company
claimed that they spent
more in terms of out-
goes towards insurance
claims than the revenue
they earned through
annual premium collec-
tion per civic employee
covered under the
scheme,” he said.
“It is surprising that
despite paying (premi-
ums) for more than a
lakh employees, BMC
was unable to provide
a better rate of return
for the insurance com-
pany vis-à-vis the
claims sanctioned. It is
not as if all the 1,10,000
civic workers may have
filed claims in any giv-
en year,” a senior civic
official told First India.
This person asked not
to be named for fear of
blowback.
It’s been five years,
but the BMC has not
introduced any fresh
group medical insur-
ance scheme.
The official indicat-
ed a possible “nexus”
(read: kickbacks being
sought from the private
insurer) as the stum-
bling block for the re-
newal of the group
medical insurance
since August 2017.
Instead, workers are
offered the option of
individual insurance
cover, with a sum cash
payout of up to Rs15,000
a year, in keeping with
notifications issued on
September 18, 2019,
June 25, 2020, and Feb-
ruary 23, 2021.
But doesn’t seem to
be helping much.
A spokesperson of
the Mahapalika Arog-
ya-Se-va Karmachari
Sanghatana, Mumbai,
(affiliated to the Mum-
bai Mahanagarpalika
Karmachari Maha-
sangh) says: “Being
less educated, many
employees did not opt
for the individual med-
ical cover. So, they’ve
lost out on the medical
cover afforded to them
and have also had to
pay for medical expens-
es themselves.”

To address the issue

WILL AZAM PAY
BACK AKHILESH
IN SAME COIN
DURING RS POLL
ohammed Azam
Khan’s reference to
the “contribution”
of his own people in
his “destruction”
has left a lot unsaid but one can
safely presume that he felt be-
trayed by his party and its pres-
ident Akhilesh Yadav. It is no
secret that during Azam Khan’s
long period of trial and tribula-
tion nobody from the party stood
by him. Shivpal Yadav also ex-
tended his support after he him-
self was pushed to the sidelines
by Akhilesh Yadav. It will be no
surprise if Azam Khan chooses
to part ways with the party even
if he has nowhere to go.
Azam’s moves will be keenly
watched during the Rajya Sabha
elections. The Samajwadi Party
has 111 legislators, 32 of whom
are Muslims. They have to be
kept in good humour if Akhile-
sh Yadav has to win the three
Rajya Sabha seats the numbers
entitle him to. If he doesn’t, then
it will be a sad commentary on
his leadership which is already
facing a lot of questions.

M
f you earn Rs

month feel happy
because you are
part of the top 10
percent of the wage bracket.
This group is below the top
one percent, or the rich, who
account for 5-7 percent of the
national income. Below the
middle income group are
those earning less than Rs
5,000 a month. They consti-
tute 15 percent of the popula-
tion. Given the subsidised
ration being distributed
among the poor and high in-
flation the middle income
group is the worst hit as it
gets no financial/material
support from the govern-
ment. The overall income
disparity between the top
one percent and the 15 per-
cent lower income group is
also far too stark. This ine-
quality gets more pro-
nounced when one looks at
the trend which shows the
rich getting richer and the
poor poorer.
These findings have been
revealed in the State of Ine-
quality in India Report of the
Prime Minister’s Economic
Advisory Council released by
Bibek Debroy, Chairperson
of the Council.
Notably, Debroy said at the
launch that there’s a lack of
comprehensive data to bring
down inequality the report
has recommended a guaran-
teedemploymentprogramme
for the urban unemployed on
the lines of Mahatma Gandhi
National Rural Employment
Guarantee Act (MNREGA)
and a Universal Basic In-
come scheme.
On the face of it a MNRE-
GA like scheme for urban
areas looks impractical in
view of the differences in the
nature of rural and urban
activities.
For a complete picture of
the economy
, the government
must come out with the data
about monthly per capita ex-
penditure.

n May 10, the newly appoint-
ed Vice-Chancellor of Jawa-
harlal Nehru University, the
distinguished Santishree
Dhulipudi Pandit, according
to newspaper reports said
that India did not learn ‘dem-
ocratic values’ from the Brit-
ish. From where did we learn
these values? Who intro-
duced the democratic elec-
toral process in India? Bur-
ma was a democracy till 1962.
In that year General Ne Win
over threw Thakin Nu’s dem-
ocratic government.
Did the Cholas really run a
democracy, did they have a
Parliament, was the Ruler
elected by the people. India
Cultural nationalism? The
Culture of Tamil Nadu is dif-
ferent from the culture of the
Braj region, where I come
from.
India was ruled by Mus-
lims for nearly a thousand
years. They were a minority
.
The Muslims ruled over us
with the help of us Hindus.
No democracy during the
Mughal rule, leave alone the
Guptas or Harsha. Ghazni
looted the Somnath Temple
many times, did any Hindu
ruler challenge him. Does
historical evidence exist that
Ghazani was ever effectively
challenged. Who said govern-
ment of the people, for the
people, by the people. Not
Swami Dayanand Saraswati.
Yes, Panchayats did exist in
certain parts of Bharatvar-
sha but these were not na-
tional institutions.
Can the erudite, Vice-Chan-
cellor produce facts about
Draupadi and Sita being real
historical persons. Read Gan-
dhiji, he categorically states
that they were mythological
figures. Incidentally the Cho-
las did not rule this country
for 2000 years.
Santishree Pandit is quot-
ed in the Indian Express
thus, “Many people believe
that feminist or women’s
rights movement began only
with Marx and ended there.”
I have read a fair amount of
the writings of Marx. He
treated his wife abdominally
.
The greatest Marxist histo-
rian of the 20th century Eric
Hobsbawm, nowhere men-
tion Marx’s feminism. As far
as I can recall, Karl Marx
was not a feminist. Gandhiji
was. He had Sarojni Naidu
elected President of the Con-
gress in 1925.
I sincerely hope that the
erudite Shrimati Dhulipudi
Pandit has been misquoted.
However, the fact cannot be
denied that Brahmins had
till very recent times were
addressed as gurus. All spir-
itual, intellectual and schol-
arly activity in Bharatvash
from the beginning of time
was solely under the supervi-
sion and control of this ex-
traordinary Community,
whose population has never
reached double figures. I am
subject to correction.

LOSS OF CONGRESS
IS GAIN OF BJP
Sunil Jakhar naturally was
upset and spoke up criti-
cally of the so-called high
command. A show cause
notice was sent to him. This
was the breaking point. He
resigned from the Congress
party and joined BJP. The
loss of the Congress was
the gain of the BJP.
YOUNG PATEL
RESIGNS CONGRESS
Hardik Patel, the very
young and active patidar
leader too has resigned
and lambasted the unsa-
voury activities going on at
the Udaipur Shivir. He was
particularly hard on Rahul
Gandhi. Not a happy situa-
tion for the Congress.
WITTY NAVJOT SIDHU IS IN PATIALA JAIL
Navjot Singh Sidhu was, in his youth a World class cricketer.
Had he been a less unpredictable and centrifugal individual, he
would have captained our Test Team. Unfortunately his cricket ca-
reer ended rather abruptly. His TV programme was hugely popular.
He is a naturally witty person. His TV audiences ran into millions.
He had to give up his TV occupation after joining politics. 1988 has
finally caught up with him. In that year he had a fracas with a car
driver at a car parking lot. Sidhu, in a fit of temper hit the man who
died on the spot. On Friday 20, Navjot Singh Sidhu was sentenced
to one year’s rigorous imprisonment. He is now in Patiala jail.

DELHI BY JUNE END
Climate change has arrived.
Never has the summer
temperature in Delhi been
higher and for so many
weeks. The MeT predicts the
monsoon in Delhi will break

AFTER-EFFECTS OF CHINTAN SHIVIR
The post Chintan Shivar scenario must worry serious minded congressmen and Congress
Women. Sunil Jakhar has been an active member of the Party for decades. He could have been
president of the Punjab Congress Committee, if a nasty female had not pronounced that a Hindu
could not become PCC President. This was incredible.
Nowhere has it been written in the Congress Constitu-
tion that a Hindu cannot become PCC President of Pun-
jab because he is a Hindu. Sonia Gandhi should have
overruled the woman. She did not. Jakhar naturally
was upset and spoke up critically of the so called high
command. A show cause notice was sent to him. This
was the breaking point. He resigned from the Congress
party and joined BJP. The loss of the Congress was the
gain of the BJP. Sunil’s father was Speaker of the Lok
Sabha twice an Governor of Madhya Pradesh. Hardik Patel, the very young and active patidar
leader too has resigned and lambasted the unsavoury activities going on at the Udaipur Shivir. He
was particularly hard on Rahul Gandhi. Not a happy situation for the Congress.

‘CONGNOT‘BIGDADDY’,RESPECTSREGIONALPARTIES’
Speaking at an event in London, Gandhi described the ‘fight’ against BJP as a ‘group effort’
New Delhi (PTI):
Backtracking from his
stand in Udaipur, Con-
gress leader Rahul Gan-
dhi said his party re-
spects regional outfits
and does not want to be
“the Big Daddy” while
asserting that the fight
against the BJP will be
a “group effort”.
During an interactive
session at the ‘Ideas for
India’ conference in
London, he made a
scathing attack on the
BJP government alleg-
ing the “deep state” in
India is attacking insti-
tutions and capturing
them such as the media.
Alleging that people’s
voices are being stifled,
Gandhi said the Con-
gress will reach out to
the masses and fight to
save ‘the idea of India’.
The former Congress
chief asserted his party
will coordinate with re-
gional outfits to launch
a nationwidemovement
against the ruling dis-
pensation and will
reach out to the people
in a big way
.
“We have to coordi-
nate with our friends in
the opposition. I don’t
view the Congress as
the ‘Big Daddy’. It is a
group effort with the
opposition. But it is a
fight to regain India,”
he said at the conclave.
A video of the event
was released by the
Congress on Saturday
.
“The point I made in
Udaipur, which was
misconstrued, is that
this is an ideological
battle now. It is a nation-
al ideological battle,
which means that of
course we respect the
DMK as a Tamil politi-
cal organisation, but
the Congress has the
ideology at the national
level,” Gandhi said.
“In no way is the Con-
gress superior to other
opposition parties, we
are all fighting the same
battle. They have their
space, we have ours, but
an ideological battle is
taking place is between
the national vision of
RSS that of the Con-
gress,” Gandhi added.

BJP’s “deep

India: RaGa
New Delhi (PTI): The
“deep state” in India is
“chewing” the Indian
state much like in Paki-
stan, Congress leader
Rahul Gandhi has said
in a frontal attack on
the Modi government,
provoking a predictable
backlash Saturday from
the ruling party which
branded him a “part-
time, immature, unsuc-
cessful leader” who be-
trayed the country with
his remarks made on
foreign soil.
During an interactive
session at ‘Ideas for In-
dia’ conference in Lon-
don, Gandhi not only
mounted a scathing at-
tack on BJP govt but
also extended an olive
branch to regional par-
ties who he had angered
with his comment that
they were not capable
of taking on the saffron
party for want of ideol-
ogy. Gandhi said the
soul of India is under
attack from the BJP and
“A soul without a voice
means nothing and
what has happened is
that India’s voice has
been crushed”.

New Delhi: Elections
have been announced
for 57 Rajya Sabha seats.
Elections are to be held
on these seats on June
10 next month and it is
being claimed that BJP
seats will increase in
the Upper House. It is
also being said that af-
ter the Lok Sabha, the
BJP is now moving to-
wards a majority in the
Rajya Sabha as well.
However, there is no in-
crease in BJP’s seats
under normal circum-
stances. Its number of
seats will remain the
same as before or there
will be a decrease of one
seat in it. Yes, if the BJP
nominates such people
on all the seven vacant
seats of the nominated
category, who declare
themselves as members
of the BJP as soon as
they take oath, then the
BJP will have the advan-
tage of three seats. Four
of the seven retired MPs
were members of the
BJP and Mary Kom,
Chhatrapati Sambhaji
and Narendra Jadhav
kept themselves inde-
pendent.
Among the states
where Rajya Sabha elec-
tions are to be held, the
BJP will have the advan-
tage of only three seats
in Uttar Pradesh, but it
will have to bear the loss
of seats in Rajasthan,
AndhraPradesh,Chhat-
tisgarh, Maharashtra,
Jharkhand and Telan-
gana. In Uttar Pradesh,
11 seats are falling va-
cant, out of which five
seats belong to the BJP
and it will get three ad-
ditional seats this time.
In this way, the party
will have the advantage
of three seats in Uttar
Pradesh. Apart from
this, BJP will have the
advantage of one seat in
Uttarakhand, where
Pradeep Tamta of Con-
gress is retiring. Apart
from these four seats,
the BJP has no advan-
tage in any state.
The BJP will suffer
the maximum loss of
three seats each in Ra-
jasthan and Andhra
Pradesh. All the four
seats falling vacant in
Rajasthan belong to the
BJP. According to the
position of the parties
in the assembly, this
time the Congress can
win three seats. The
Congress-led govern-
ment has 125 MLAs and
needs 41 votes to win a
seat. Meanwhile, four
seats are falling vacant
in Andhra Pradesh, out
of which three seats are
of BJP
. This time all the
four seats will go to the
account of YSR Con-
gress. Three out of six
seats falling vacant in
Maharashtra belong to
the BJP, but this time it
will be able to win only
two seats and will lose
one seat.
Of the two seats fall-
ing vacant in Chhattis-
garh, one seat belongs
to the BJP but it will not
be able to win a single
seat this time rather
will lose one seat. Two
seats are falling vacant
in Jharkhand, out of
which BJP will be able
to win only one seat this
time. So, there will also
be a loss of one seat.
Apart from these, in the
states where elections
are held, the number of
BJP seats in Bihar, Ma-
harashtra, Karnataka,
Madhya Pradesh and
Haryana will remain
constant. That is, the
more people who retire,
the more people will
come back again. In this
way
, BJP is gaining four
seats in two states and
losing nine seats in five
states. Even if we add
the advantage of three
seats in the nominated
category, the gain is
seven and the loss is
nine. So, BJP’s seats are
going to remain fixed at
one hundred only
.
No more ‘achhe din’ for BJP as its RS strength set to decline!

Global equity markets

briefly took it into bear

the dollar gained on Fri-

fears of a recession.
Shares rebounded
earlier in Europe and

tially to drive gains on

China cut its prime

While a late-day rally

RBI surplus transfer lowest in a decade
New Delhi (PTI): The
Reserve Bank of India
(RBI) decided to trans-
fer its FY22 surplus of
Rs 30,307 crore to the
government, the lowest
dividend in ten years,
which will reflect in
the Centre’s budgetary
calculations in FY23.
Its board decided to
maintain the contin-
gency risk buffer at
5.5%.
The dividend is less
than a third of the cen-
tral bank’s generous
transfer of Rs 99,122
crore for FY21, which
was, in fact, based on
the RBI’s surplus over
a nine-month period
through March 2021, as
it had decided to align
its fiscal year with that
of the government.
Low payout by the
central bank, partly
due to its heavy invest-
ments in reverse repo
operations, will drag
down the government’s
budgeted receipts of
Rs 73,948 crore on ac-
count of dividends
from the RBI, state-run
banks and other finan-
cial institutions in
FY23, unless surplus
transfers from other
entities rise sharply.
In fact, the RBI’s
transfer would make
up just 41% of the
government’s budget-
ed receipts for FY23,
against almost 98% of
the revised estimate
for FY22.
The drop in the RBI
dividend comes at an
inopportune time
when the Ukraine con-
flict has raised the sub-
sidy payout by the gov-
ernment and threat-
ened its bid to contain
fiscal deficit at the tar-
geted level of 6.4% in
FY23, against 6.9% in
FY22.
Of course, there are
still some bright spots.
State-run banks re-
corded a net profit of
Rs 48,874 crore in the
first three quarters of
FY22, greater than
that of Rs 31,820 crore
in the entire FY21,
which was the highest
in five years.
Given that their cap-
ital adequacy remains
sound and provision
coverage has im-
proved, the govern-
ment has a greater
scope to nudge them to
cough up much higher
dividend this fiscal.
However, since the
government may have
to spend an estimated
Rs 1.8 trillion over and
above the FY23 Budget
Estimate on fertiliser
and food subsidies,
this isn’t a good time
for a revenue slippage
on any account.
Of course, as fi-
nance secretary TV
Somanathan said, the
additional outgo could
be offset by a steep
jump in net tax re-
ceipts and higher dis-
investment revenues.
Elevated dividend
transfer by the RBI, es-
pecially since 2018-19,
had offered some cush-
ion to the government,
as it battled an econom-
ic slowdown even be-
fore the pandemic
spread its tentacles.
Thanks to the Bimal
Jalan committee,
which reviewed the
RBI’s economic capital
framework (ECF), the
central bank trans-
ferred an all-time high
amount of Rs 1.76 tril-
lion to the government
in 2018-19 (July-June).
Transfer would make up just 41% of Govt’s budgeted receipts for FY23, against almost 98% of revised estimate for FY22

Semiconductor shortage,commodity
woes continue to haunt OEMs
New Delhi (Agencies):
While earlier in 2022,
auto original equip-
ment manufacturers
(OEMs) were expecting
an improved demand
supply scenario, the
turn of events in the
last five months means
they would now need to
temper their expecta-
tions. Geopolitical
strifes, Covid-19 resur-
gence have pro-
longed semiconduc-
tor shortages and in-
duced volatility in fuel
prices, thereby hurting
demand in the last quar-

cal. OEMs have been
undertaking price hikes
over the last few months
owing to the continued
input cost pressures.
Data shows that
while domestic sales
volume increased
15.7% on a year-on-year
basis, it saw a drop of
5% on a monthly basis
due to the multiple
price hikes and semi-
conductor shortages.
Exports too fell 5.7%

crunch as China reels

Covid cases.

Thane: Conducting
the ‘death ritual’ of a
medical facility over
its ‘mismanagement’,
several people pro-
tested outside the Ma-
harashtra govern-
ment-run Indira Gan-
dhi Memorial Hospi-
tal at Bhiwandi in
Thane district.
A big portrait of the
‘dead’ hospital, brought
in by the residents of
adjoining villages on
Friday, was garlanded
before sitting down in
front of the health care
facility, where they per-
formed the mock death
rituals.
Through the demon-
stration, the protesters
tried to bring to the no-
tice of the authorities
the ‘mismanagement’
prevailing at the hospi-
tal and the lack of basic
facilities there, said
some of the partici-
pants.
Later, a delegation of
protesters met the hos-
pital’s superintendent,
Dr Rajesh More, and
held talks with him,
who assured that the
services will be im-
proved.
Dr More also said that
a 24x7 helpline would be
made operational with
immediate effect and
sufficient staff would be
appointed.

Dancer among 4 held for Lavani video
First India Bureau
Pune: A case has been
registered at Far-
askhana police sta-
tion against a female
Marathi artiste and
three others after a
video showed her per-
forming dance on a
Lavani number on the
premises of Lal Ma-
hal, where Chhatra-
pati Shivaji Maharaj
had spent several
years of his early life,
said a police official
on Saturday.
Dancer, Vaishnavi
Patil, later tendered an
apology after some po-
litical outfits, including
the ruling Nationalist
Congress Party (NCP),
condemned the dance
video.
Based on a complaint
lodged by the security
guard of the Lal Mahal,
a case against Patil and
three others was regis-
tered on Friday night.
“Vaishnavi Patil per-
formed Lavani dance at
the Lal Mahal on Mon-
day and people accom-
panying her shot a vid-
eo of it, which they later
posted on social media.
As mentioned in his
complaint, the security
guard, who was on duty
there at that time, asked
them not to perform
dance and shoot on the
premises of the monu-
ment,” said the police
official.
Lal Mahal is a red-
coloured building lo-
cated in the heart of the
city, where Maratha
warrior king Shivaji
Maharaj, a revered fig-
ure, spent several years
of his childhood.
The case against
them was filed under
Indian Penal Code (IPC)
Sections 295 (defiling
place of worship with
intent to insult the reli-
gion of any class) and
186 (voluntarily ob-
structing a public serv-
ant in the discharge of
his public functions),
he added.
Lavani, a popular
folk dance of Maha-
rashtra, is known for its
sensuous moves.
Maharashtra minis-
ter and NCP leader Ji-
tendra Awhad con-
demned the Lavani
dance shoot at the Lal
Mahal.
NCP’s city unit presi-
dent Prashant Jagtap
announced that a pro-
test will be held outside
the Lal Mahal on Satur-
day afternoon to de-
nounce the video.
The Pune unit of
Sambhaji Brigade, also
condemned the video.

Aurangabad: The Ar-
chaeological Survey
of India (ASI) has dis-
covered the remains
of a Mughal-era
‘hamam’ (Turkish
bath house) about 50
metres from the en-
trance gate of the Bi-
bi-Ka-Maqbara, a fa-
mous replica of the
Taj Mahal in Aurang-
abad. The structure
was unearthed while
clearing a massive
mound of debris at
the site.
During the clearance,
the ASI also found three
trenches, connected
with an ancient well,
that were filled to the
brim.
Speaking to the me-
dia, ASI’s Superintend-
ing Archaeologist Dr
Milan Chauley said, “It
would be incorrect to
term the ongoing work
as an excavation. We
are carrying out a sci-
entific clearance of the
mound, which was be-
gun some time in Feb-
ruary last year.”
According to ASI of-
ficials, there’s a strong
possibility that they
will find the remains of
a ‘sarai’ (resting place
for travellers). The de-
sign of the ‘hamam’ in-
dicates that it was built
during the Mughal era.
The officials also stat-
ed that if things go as
per the plan, tourists
will be able get a
glimpse of both struc-
turesincomingmonths.
“It appears that the
Mughals built the
‘hamam’, and possibly a
‘sarai’, so that visitors
and travellers could
bathe and freshen up
before entering the Bi-
bi-Ka-Maqbara. The
Maqbara is a 16th-cen-
tury monument built by
the Mughals and is
known as the Taj of the
Deccan,” Chauley said.
The ‘sarai,’ which
was probably open until
1960, was buried under
the debris during an ex-
cavation on the road-
side. The debris caught
Chauley’s attention in
February last year. He
studied all records of
the monument before
deciding to go in for a
scientific clearance.

ASI has also unearthed three
trenches, connected with an ancient
well, that were once filled to the brim
According to ASI officials, the possibilty of finding a ‘sarai’ buried
under the debris was ‘very strong’.
METICULOUS
CHICKEN
SANDWICH, RAHUL
AND HARDIK
The politics of to-
day’s era has re-
duced the fine line be-
tween ‘Nayak’ and
‘Pratinayak’, even
though the tradition of
singing paeans of one
‘Nayak’ may be attrib-
uted to a particular
party
, but this tradition
has been broken in the
Congress. It is learned
from the sources that
when Rahul Gandhi
had gone to Gujarat
prior to the Udaipur
Chintan Shivir, party
working president
Hardik Patel had
reached out to meet him
at his luxurious hotel in
Ahmedabad. Patel is
said to have taken with
him a special Gujarati
vegetarian dish pre-
pared at his home for
Rahul. But even in
Hardik’s company, Ra-
hul found it more appro-
priate to order chicken
sandwiches from the
hotel’s restaurant in-
stead of Patel’s home
cooked Guja-
rati cuisine.
Hardik felt
bad about
this. After this, Hardik
handed over a list of
about one hundred and
fifty influential Gujara-
ti people whom he want-
ed to be introduced to
Rahul. But Rahul ex-
pressed his reluctance
to meet these people and
said that he is in a re-
laxed mood now and has
to return to Delhi the
next day, so this time it
will not be possible to
meet these people. Ra-
hul further told Hardik
that if he wanted to in-
troduce these people, he
can bring them to Delhi.
Hardik was displeased
with this, and after leav-
ing the hotel room, he
angrily told some of his
trusted friends, “If our
leader does not want to
come out of the gyms
and massage rooms,
then only God can save
the Congress.” Howev-
er, Rahul apparently
learned about this com-
ment by Hardik and was
stunned. Upon reaching
Delhi, he complained to
his mother about
Hardik and said- ‘This
man is very rude, we
will not call him to
Udaipur.’ Sonia tried to
pacify Rahul stressing
that party works on con-
stitution and can not be
run on whims and fan-
cies. But
when Rahul
remained
a d a m a n t
on his stand, a decision
was taken that no work-
ing presidents would be
called in the Udaipur’s
Chintan Shivir. But this
decision of the high
command was criti-
cized everywhere.
Therefore, in view of
the growing dissatisfac-
tion in the party, Sonia
Gandhi has now decid-
ed that ‘very soon the
party’s mini contempla-
tion camp will be organ-
ized, in which state gov-
ernmentministersfrom
Congress-ruled states
of RajasthanandChhat-
tisgarh, Maharashtra
and Jharkhand, party’s
national spokesperson
etc about 120 leaders in-
cluding working presi-
dents will be invited.
RAHUL GOES TO
LONDON
Soon after the end of
Udaipur Chintan
Shivir, Congress’s re-
splendent ‘star’ Rahul
Gandhi has reached
London. He has gone to
London at the invitation
of UK-based think-tank
‘Bridge India’, where he
is going to participate in
the ‘Ideas for India’ con-
ference, and along with
this Rahul has also de-
livered a speech at Cam-
bridge University
. But
surprisingly, earlier in
such international fo-
rums Rahul was called
as a single speaker, but
this time the list of
speakers speaking in
‘Ideas for India’ is much
longer. Congress’s Sal-
man Khurshid, Sam
Pitroda, CPI(M) General
Secretary Sitaram
Yechury
, RJD President
Tejashwi Yadav and Ra-
jya Sabha MP Manoj Ku-
mar Jha, TMC’s fire-
brand MP Mahua Moi-
tra and TRS’s KT Rama
Rao are also going to
speakinthisconference.
PRIYANKA ANGRY
WITH PRAMOD
KRISHNAM
During a meeting at
the Congress’
Chintan Shivir at
Udaipur, Congress lead-
er Pramod Krishnam
demanded, in a loud
voice, that Priyanka
Gandhi should be made
the new president of
the party. This demand
made Priyanka so un-
comfortable that she
immediately pointed
her eyes at her col-
league Deepender Hoo-
da. Deepender silenced
Acharya Pramod and
said, “we are no one to
decide the name of the
party president, leave
this decision to the par-
ty and the family.” Af-
ter this, it was Mall-
ikarjun Kharge direct-
ed his anger at Acharya
Pramod and scolded
Acharya in a slightly
loud voice saying, “You
keep quiet, it is not
your job to decide this
nor is it a forum to raise
such an issue.” After
the meeting was over,
Acharya Pramod took
Sachin Pilot along to
meet Priyanka. As soon
as the duo arrived at
Priyanka’s room, Pri-
yanka could not control
her anger and she
scolded Acharya say-
ing, “You need to im-
prove yourself. Do not
even try to create a
quarrel in the family.
You try to publicize out-
side that you are my
political advisor, today,
you tell me how many
of your messages do I
reply to?” While Acha-
rya Pramod Krishnam
stood there without a
word from his side, it
was Sachin Pilot who
handled the matter and
somehow quelled Pri-
yanka’s anger.

designers Viresh Verma,
Kingshuk Bhaduri and de-
signer Ashfaq Ahmed to
name a few. The designers
presented a collection that
was a blend of simple silhou-
ettes, fine detailing, and a hint
of shimmer. Supermodel Kang-
na Malik walked the ramp and
won many hearts with her
ramp walk at a fashion week.
Designer Kingshuk Bha-
duri displayed a collection
that emphasised comfort
while staying stylish. A
combination of sharara
pants with angrakha
jackets, long flowy dress-
es, fitted trousers and
sheer shirts for men
were the highlight of
the collection. A lot of
georgettes and jersey
material were used
to keep the collec-
tion comfortable.
Talking about
the collection,
the designer said
that she wanted
to create a Hol-

with some
classic looks.
“It was a

shades were mostly used in
the line. It was a wonderful
show. I was very excited to be
here at DTFW.” Chandni Dev-
gan was the showstopper for
the designer and donned a
sequined lehenga in cream
with thread embroidery.
Designer duo Vipin Aggar-
wal and Rajdeep Roy put to-
gether a show with a mes-
sage on sustainability. Ele-
gant summer dresses with
asymmetrical hems, summer
blazers, shorts and fitted
shirts and pants for men
were part of the collection.
Print in green and a touch of
gold was the common feature
of the collection. There was
an added element of shim-
mer as designer Ashfaque
Ahmad ended the show with
his dazzling designs in gold.
From fitted floor-length
gowns to glow ones with the
trail, the collection was
about easy to wear evening
wear. Said the designer, “I
have a simple approach,
myth that you can wear
gowns, it was for summer
parties.” About his asso-
ciation with
DTFW, Ash-
faque said, “I
have been as-
sociated with

quite some time
now and each time I enjoy
this experience.”

The minority Con-

tradition too??
Having said that, we
now come to the core
issue of PRO-LIFE vs
PRO-CHOICE.

Life inside the womb.
Its common knowl-
edge that the moment a
conception takes place,
the joint energy of a

inside the womb, lead-
ing to the birth of a hu-
man. To say that it’s
only sinful to abort af-
ter 6, 16 or 24 weeks are
just ruses by unwitting
opposing sides.
Some argue that it’s
the first heartbeat of
the foetus, happening
between weeks 5-6 of
gestation, that is the
sole criteria to deter-
mine the beginning of
Life. Others link hu-

integration is said to
take place between 24-
28 weeks. These are
conflicting views of
cold science. What hap-
pens in the warm con-
fines of the womb are
unanswered questions
of morality
, choice and
survival.
In all this confusion,
the one proper person
with the real answer is
the one bearing life in
her Uterus: THE
MOTHER !!
A Woman, always

ers social reformers
argued for a woman’s
right over her body,
with Guru Nanak fur-

to one below God, but
above man’s.
Such thoughts did
setoff anevolutionthat
led to sawing off the

But unfortunately, hu-
manity may slide back
if anti-choice laws are
enacted again.
America being the

  • 1. TMC may offer RS nomination to Suresh Prabhu, BJP unlikely Devendra Fadnavis’s political coup in Maharashtra Renni Abraham & Satish Nandgaonkar Mumbai: The BJP has pulled out a surprise for the sixth Rajya Sab- ha seat from Maharash- tra, offering Chhatra- pati Sambhaji Raje un- conditional support- -after the Shiv Sena asked the descendent of Maratha King Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj to seek his nomination as their party candidate. Confirming this, a senior BJP leader told First India, “The BJP was true to the Maratha community before on the reservations issue and, now on the forth- coming Rajya Sabha polls. We gave a respect- ful presidential nomi- nation to Chhatrapati Sambhaji Raje to the Rajya Sabha for the last six years. Now, the Shiv Sena has ordered the descendent of Chhatra- pati Shivaji Maharaj to join the party if he wants a Rajya Sabha nomination. The BJP, on the other hand, has offered the uncondi- tional support of the 20-odd additional votes from Maharashtra for the descendent of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.” BJP candidates had won 105 state assembly seats in the 2019 elec- tions, and further added to this tally by defeating the NCP candidate to win the Pandharpur as- sembly by-election held a year ago. As a result, the party enjoys 106 in- dividual votes, apart from those of allies in the 288-member state legislative assembly of Maharashtra. Even af- ter 84 votes, the BJP kitty will ensure the election of two Rajya Sabha seats (including Union Minister Piyush Goyal) the additional 20-odd votes have been offered to Sambhaji Raje unconditionally . This is in stark con- trast to the Shiv Sena offer, which mandates Sambhaji Raje first join the MVA alliance, as Sena MP Sanjay Raut specified on Saturday after emerging from a meeting with Uddhav Thackeray at his pri- vate residence Ma- toshree. Even NCP Chief Sharad Pawar had initially indicated an interest in support- ing Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s descendent for his second consecu- tive Rajya Sabha tenure but later maintained a stoic silence on the is- sue. BJP’s leader of oppo- sition in Maharashtra, Devendra Fadnavis seems to have pulled off a political coup of sorts, as the social mes- saging for the domi- nant Maratha commu- nity is loud and clear, regarding where their political interests lie going ahead. Satish Nandgaonkar& Renni Abraham Mumbai: The All In- dia Trinamool Con- gress (TMC) may of- fer a Rajya Sabha nomination to Bharatiya Janata Par- ty (BJP) leader and former Railways min- ister Suresh Prabhu, who is unlikely to get a third term to the up- per house through the BJP. Prabhu, who served four terms as a Lok Sabha member from 1996 to 2014, has com- pleted his second term in the upper house. However, sources said the party may not offer a third term to the 69-year- old leader who served in the Narendra Modi cabinet in important positions as Minister of Railways, Minister of Commerce and In- dustry, and Minister of Civil Aviation. “Prabhu has had a very long and satis- factory stint in poli- tics, beginning with the Shiv Sena and then migrating to the BJP under the Atal Behari Vajpayee Un- ion Government. Even the Modi Sarkar deployed him to cru- cial posts. It is true that he has not been in the best of health and so the party may not consider giving him another tenure,” a highly placed source in the BJP confirmed. Asking not to be named since they are not authorized to speak to the press on the issue, this person added that even if Prabhu was offered a Rajya Sabha nomina- tion by the TMC, he is not likely to accept it. When First India contacted Prabhu at his Delhi residence, he declined to com- ment on whether his party had held dis- cussions with him regarding another term. Asked if anoth- er political party had offered him an RS nomination, he said, “I don’t want to comment on any of this.” Notably, the TMC had recently fielded former BJP leaders Yashwant Sinha and Shatrughan Sinha from West Bengal for by-elections to the Lok Sabha. Efforts to contact TMC Rajya Sabha leader Derek O’Brien failed to elic- it any response. PRABHU HAS SERVED IN KEY POSITIONS IN THE ATAL BIHARI VAJPAYEE AND NARENDRA MODI CABINETS Offers unconditional support of 22 votes for Chhatrapati Sambhaji Raje’s Rajya Sabha conquest while Shiv Sena sets preconditions Chhatrapati Sambhaji Raje Prabhu has had a very long and satisfacto- ry stint in politics, begin- ning with the Shiv Sena and then migrating to the BJP under the Atal Behari Vajpayee Union Government. Even the Modi Sarkar deployed him to crucial posts. It is true that he has not been in the best of health and so the party may not con- sider giving him another tenure. —BJP functionary PRABHU, WHO SERVED FOUR TERMS AS A LOK SABHA MEMBER FROM 1996 TO 2014, HAS COMPLETED HIS SECOND TERM IN THE UPPER HOUSE. HOWEVER, SOURCES SAID THE PARTY MAY NOT OFFER A THIRD TERM TO THE 69-YEAR-OLD LEADER WHO SERVED IN THE NARENDRA MODI CABINET IN IMPORTANT POSITIONS AS MINISTER OF RAILWAYS, MINISTER OF COMMERCE AND INDUSTRY, AND MINISTER OF CIVIL AVIATION. Suresh Prabhu Union Home Minister Amit Shah, during his two-day trip to Arunachal Pradesh, on Saturday assured that the inter-state boundary dispute between Assam and Arunachal Pradesh will be resolved by next year. Union law minister Kiren Rijiju is also accompanying Shah. NSE MANIPULATION CASE CBI raids properties linked to Chitra in Delhi, Mumbai, other cities across country New Delhi: The CBI Saturday conducted searches at multiple locations in connec- tion with its probe into the alleged bourse manipulation case against former National Stock Ex- change CEO Chitra Ramkrishna. Sources said the raids are be- ing conducted across Delhi, Gurgaon, Noi- da, Mumbai, Kolkata and Gandhinagar. “The searches are being conducted at the premises associated with some stock bro- kers who manipulated the co-location facility provided by the NSE in connivance with its officials,” a CBI offic- er said. The agency had last month filed a chargesheet against Chitra Ramkrishna, formerCEOandMDof National Stock Ex- change (NSE), and for- mer NSE COO Anand Subramanian in con- nection with its case. The CBI’s case per- tains to charges of brokers being given preferential access to NSE’s trading system in the form of a co-lo- cation facility, through which they bought “rack space” for their servers. CHITRA AND YOGI: THE CHAIN OF EVENTS z The CBI had arrested Subramanian and Ram- krishna in February and March, respectively. z The agency regis- tered the case in 2018 but action against the two followed a report of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), which indicted Ramkrishna for illegal appointment of Subra- manian and for alleg- edly sharing confidential information related to the bourse with a “Himalayan Yogi”. z On February 11, Ramkrishna was fined Rs 3 crore by SEBI for allegedly violating rules in the appointment of Subramanian. Rana couple them- selves will have to re- move illegal construc- tion, otherwise, BMC itself will get the demo- lition done. Unsatisfied with the reply from the Rana couple over the notice on Friday, BMC again sent the notice, seeking a reply to the same and asking them to submit it within seven days of the receipt of the notice. The BMC had al- ready sent a notice to the couple under Sec- tion 488 of the Mumbai Municipal Corporation Act, 1888, according to which, officials can visit any building and ascertain whether any illegal alterations have been undertaken. First India Bureau Thane: Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minis- ter Ajit Pawar has called for imparting quality education to students of ashram schools in the state, to ensure they were at par with their counterparts in ur- ban areas. The senior National- ist Congress Party (NCP) leader was speak- ing after inaugurating a government ashram school at Kothare of Shahapur tehsil in Thane district on Fri- day . Ashram schools are residential schools for tribal students. “Like every- one else, ed- ucation is a basic right of tribal communi- ties. The state gov- e r n - ment is putting in eve- ry effort to bring the students from tribal areas at par with those residing in cities and towns,” said Pawar, during his speech. To provide quality education to students of ashram schools, the process to recruit teach- ers needs to be carried out in a transparent manner, he said. The state govern- ment wants to provide world-class education to ashram school stu- dents, he said, adding that these students should be given such training that they are able to represent the country at world events. “Just building ash- ram schools will not be sufficient,” he said. First India Bureau Mumbai: The Shiv Sena has expressed concern over unre- solved issues of the Congress party at the recently concluded Chintan Shivir held in Udaipur. “The Con- gress has left its lead- ership issue unre- solved at the Chintan Shivir held recently. The party’s current condition is misera- ble, which is not good for the country’s de- mocracy,” it said on Saturday. In an editorial of its party mouthpiece ‘Saamana’, the Shiv Sena said that on one hand, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has already begun prepa- rations for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, and on the other hand, the Congress party is in dire straits. “Rahul Gandhi (Congress national leader) has left several issues unresolved at the party’s Udaipur conclave. That is the reason several leaders in different states are deserting the party,” said the party, which currently shares pow- er with the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and Congress in Maha- rashtra. The decision to leave Congress by leaders, including Sunil Jakhar, Hardik Patel, Jyotiraditya Scindia and Jitin Prasada, showcases the failure of the par- ty leadership, it added. However, Shiv Se- na’s concern did not go down well with the Ma- harashtra Congress chief Nana Patole. “Congress is a thought and several people have come and gone. Instead of focusing on who leaves or joins Congress, people should worry about the burning issues that the country is facing,” he said. First India Bureau Mumbai: Taking cog- nizance of the En- forcement Directo- rate’s charge sheet against Nationalist Congress Party’s leader Nawab Malik, a special court on Fri- day said there is pri- ma facie evidence to indicate Malik was directly and know- ingly involved in the money laundering and criminal conspir- acy with others to usurp Goawala com- pound in Kurla. The court has issued a process against him and the 1993 bomb blast case accused Sardar Shahwali Khan, who is also named in the case. The order copy men- tioned, “It is alleged that accused Nawab Malik and members of D Company criminally conspired and had tak- en unauthorized pos- session/acquisition of the above property. It appears from the state- ments that Sardar Khan convicted in the Bom- bay Bomb Blast case was also part of the said conspiracy. In lieu of his assistance in usurp- ing the property of Mu- nira Plumber, he got a covered area of around 368 sq mtr in Goawala Compound and the same was given to him by Solidus Investments Pvt. Ltd. For usurping the above property, members of D-Compa- ny and accused Nawab Malik, connived togeth- er and executed several legal documents to put a facade of genuinity over the criminal act. To this end, Nawab Ma- lik and Hasina Parkar entered into a criminal conspiracy .” Renni Abraham Mumbai: More than 1.1 lakh employees of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corpora- tion (BMC) effectively lost their health in- surance cover—hith- erto provided under United India Insur- ance Co.’s Medical Group Insurance Scheme—in August 2017, when the civic body moved its health- care focus to individu- al employees (barring contract workers). According to advo- cate Prakash Devdas, president of the work- ers’ union, the firm had provided medical group insurance to civ- ic workers for two years—2015-16 and 2016-17—but suddenly “discontinued the scheme after negotia- tions for the next fiscal year broke down”. “The company claimed that they spent more in terms of out- goes towards insurance claims than the revenue they earned through annual premium collec- tion per civic employee covered under the scheme,” he said. “It is surprising that despite paying (premi- ums) for more than a lakh employees, BMC was unable to provide a better rate of return for the insurance com- pany vis-à-vis the claims sanctioned. It is not as if all the 1,10,000 civic workers may have filed claims in any giv- en year,” a senior civic official told First India. This person asked not to be named for fear of blowback. It’s been five years, but the BMC has not introduced any fresh group medical insur- ance scheme. The official indicat- ed a possible “nexus” (read: kickbacks being sought from the private insurer) as the stum- bling block for the re- newal of the group medical insurance since August 2017. Instead, workers are offered the option of individual insurance cover, with a sum cash payout of up to Rs15,000 a year, in keeping with notifications issued on September 18, 2019, June 25, 2020, and Feb- ruary 23, 2021. But doesn’t seem to be helping much. A spokesperson of the Mahapalika Arog- ya-Se-va Karmachari Sanghatana, Mumbai, (affiliated to the Mum- bai Mahanagarpalika Karmachari Maha- sangh) says: “Being less educated, many employees did not opt for the individual med- ical cover. So, they’ve lost out on the medical cover afforded to them and have also had to pay for medical expens- es themselves.” Quality education needed at ashram schools: Dy CM Pawar BASIC RIGHT MP Navneet Rana and MLA Ravi Rana `5L to kin of Chandrapur accident victims Nagpur (PTI): Maha- rashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Saturday announced an ex gratia of Rs5 lakh to the families of nine per- sons who were killed in an accident in Chandrapur dis- trict. BAD RATE OF RETURNS? Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation ‘Plant 1,000 saplings for causing forest fire’ Mumbai (PTI): A magistrate’s court in Maharashtra has ordered a farmer who unin- tentionally trig- gered a massive wildfire to plant 1,000 saplings and take care of them. Subhash Ramrao Patil, resident of Nandgaon village in Satara district, admitted to his guilt before a Judicial Magistrate First Class in Karad tehsil on Friday . Magistrate SA Vi- rani then ordered him to pay a fine of Rs5,000, and also plant 1,000 saplings and take care of them. Patil was asked to submit a detailed re- port about the plan- tation and survival of saplings to the forest department’s office at Malkapur. “A complaint had been filed against Patil under the In- dian Forest Act in Aprilforsettingsug- arcane stubble in hisfarmonfire.Due to the strong wind, the fire spread to the adjacent forest,” said a forest official. Mumbai (PTI): Their play-off hopes dashed, both Sunris- ers Hyderabad (SRH) and Punjab Kings (PK) will be keen to end their Indian Premier League (IPL) season on a winning note when the two teams clash on Sunday. Both teams were knocked out of the play- offs race when Royal Challengers Challenge (RCB) defeated table- toppers Gujarat Titans (GT) on Thursday . While Sunrisers managed to snap their five-match losing streak by eking out a narrow three-run win over Mumbai Indians (MI), Punjab suc- cumbed to a 17-run loss to DC. The Punjab bating unit has been plagued by inconsistencies and will need to fire in uni- son to build or defend a huge total. On the bowling front, lead pacer Kagiso Raba- da (22) continues to be the highest wicket tak- er among fast bowlers this season. The South African has bowled at an average of 16.72 with an economy of 8.36. Arshdeep Singh (10) has impressed many with his ability to land yorkers at will and has done especially well in the death overs. The SRH, on the oth- er hand, won five back- to-back matches and looked on course for a top 2 finish but injuries to their frontline bowlers Washington Sundar and T Natarjan deflated their campaign as they slumped to a five-match losing streak. Skipper Wil- liamson’s wretched form didn’t help their cause either. On the bowling front, pace sensation Umran Malik, who enjoyed a good outing in the previous game, is likely to keep the speed gun radar busy . Sunrisers also found a star Afghan bowler in the form of medium- pacer Fazalhaq Faroo- qi. Both Bhuvneshwar and Farooqi will be eyeing another good outing. It is no secret that during Azam Khan’s long period of trial and tribula- tion nobody from the party stood by him. Shivpal Yadav also ex- tended his support after he him- self was pushed to the sidelines by Akhilesh Yadav. It will be no surprise if Azam Khan chooses to part ways with the party even if he has nowhere to go. Azam’s moves will be keenly watched during the Rajya Sabha elections. The Samajwadi Party has 111 legislators, 32 of whom are Muslims. They have to be kept in good humour if Akhile- sh Yadav has to win the three Rajya Sabha seats the numbers entitle him to. If he doesn’t, then it will be a sad commentary on his leadership which is already facing a lot of questions. TOP TWEETS M f you earn Rs 25,000 or more per month feel happy because you are part of the top 10 percent of the wage bracket. This group is below the top one percent, or the rich, who account for 5-7 percent of the national income. Below the middle income group are those earning less than Rs 5,000 a month. They consti- tute 15 percent of the popula- tion. Given the subsidised ration being distributed among the poor and high in- flation the middle income group is the worst hit as it gets no financial/material support from the govern- ment. The overall income disparity between the top one percent and the 15 per- cent lower income group is also far too stark. This ine- quality gets more pro- nounced when one looks at the trend which shows the rich getting richer and the poor poorer. These findings have been revealed in the State of Ine- quality in India Report of the Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Council released by Bibek Debroy, Chairperson of the Council. Notably, Debroy said at the launch that there’s a lack of comprehensive data to bring down inequality the report has recommended a guaran- teedemploymentprogramme for the urban unemployed on the lines of Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA) and a Universal Basic In- come scheme. On the face of it a MNRE- GA like scheme for urban areas looks impractical in view of the differences in the nature of rural and urban activities. For a complete picture of the economy , the government must come out with the data about monthly per capita ex- penditure. INCOME DISPARITY SYNDROME Debroy said at the launch that there’s a lack of comprehensive data to bring down inequality, the report has recommended a guaranteed employment programme for the urban unemployed on the lines of MNREGA and a Universal Basic Income scheme I n May 10, the newly appoint- ed Vice-Chancellor of Jawa- harlal Nehru University, the distinguished Santishree Dhulipudi Pandit, according to newspaper reports said that India did not learn ‘dem- ocratic values’ from the Brit- ish. From where did we learn these values? Who intro- duced the democratic elec- toral process in India? Bur- ma was a democracy till 1962. In that year General Ne Win over threw Thakin Nu’s dem- ocratic government. Did the Cholas really run a democracy, did they have a Parliament, was the Ruler elected by the people. India Cultural nationalism? The Culture of Tamil Nadu is dif- ferent from the culture of the Braj region, where I come from. India was ruled by Mus- lims for nearly a thousand years. They were a minority . The Muslims ruled over us with the help of us Hindus. No democracy during the Mughal rule, leave alone the Guptas or Harsha. Ghazni looted the Somnath Temple many times, did any Hindu ruler challenge him. Does historical evidence exist that Ghazani was ever effectively challenged. Who said govern- ment of the people, for the people, by the people. Not Swami Dayanand Saraswati. Yes, Panchayats did exist in certain parts of Bharatvar- sha but these were not na- tional institutions. Can the erudite, Vice-Chan- cellor produce facts about Draupadi and Sita being real historical persons. Read Gan- dhiji, he categorically states that they were mythological figures. Incidentally the Cho- las did not rule this country for 2000 years. Santishree Pandit is quot- ed in the Indian Express thus, “Many people believe that feminist or women’s rights movement began only with Marx and ended there.” I have read a fair amount of the writings of Marx. He treated his wife abdominally . The greatest Marxist histo- rian of the 20th century Eric Hobsbawm, nowhere men- tion Marx’s feminism. As far as I can recall, Karl Marx was not a feminist. Gandhiji was. He had Sarojni Naidu elected President of the Con- gress in 1925. I sincerely hope that the erudite Shrimati Dhulipudi Pandit has been misquoted. However, the fact cannot be denied that Brahmins had till very recent times were addressed as gurus. All spir- itual, intellectual and schol- arly activity in Bharatvash from the beginning of time was solely under the supervi- sion and control of this ex- traordinary Community, whose population has never reached double figures. I am subject to correction. In that year he had a fracas with a car driver at a car parking lot. Sidhu, in a fit of temper hit the man who died on the spot. On Friday 20, Navjot Singh Sidhu was sentenced to one year’s rigorous imprisonment. He is now in Patiala jail. MeT: MONSOON WILL KNOCK DOOR IN NEW DELHI BY JUNE END Climate change has arrived. Never has the summer temperature in Delhi been higher and for so many weeks. The MeT predicts the monsoon in Delhi will break towards the end of June. AFTER-EFFECTS OF CHINTAN SHIVIR The post Chintan Shivar scenario must worry serious minded congressmen and Congress Women. Sunil Jakhar has been an active member of the Party for decades. He could have been president of the Punjab Congress Committee, if a nasty female had not pronounced that a Hindu could not become PCC President. This was incredible. Nowhere has it been written in the Congress Constitu- tion that a Hindu cannot become PCC President of Pun- jab because he is a Hindu. Sonia Gandhi should have overruled the woman. She did not. Jakhar naturally was upset and spoke up critically of the so called high command. A show cause notice was sent to him. This was the breaking point. He resigned from the Congress party and joined BJP. A video of the event was released by the Congress on Saturday . “The point I made in Udaipur, which was misconstrued, is that this is an ideological battle now. It is a nation- al ideological battle, which means that of course we respect the DMK as a Tamil politi- cal organisation, but the Congress has the ideology at the national level,” Gandhi said. “In no way is the Con- gress superior to other opposition parties, we are all fighting the same battle. Three out of six seats falling vacant in Maharashtra belong to the BJP, but this time it will be able to win only two seats and will lose one seat. Of the two seats fall- ing vacant in Chhattis- garh, one seat belongs to the BJP but it will not be able to win a single seat this time rather will lose one seat. Two seats are falling vacant in Jharkhand, out of which BJP will be able to win only one seat this time. So, there will also be a loss of one seat. Apart from these, in the states where elections are held, the number of BJP seats in Bihar, Ma- harashtra, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh and Haryana will remain constant. That is, the more people who retire, the more people will come back again. In this way , BJP is gaining four seats in two states and losing nine seats in five states. Even if we add the advantage of three seats in the nominated category, the gain is seven and the loss is nine. So, BJP’s seats are going to remain fixed at one hundred only . No more ‘achhe din’ for BJP as its RS strength set to decline! Shares rebounded earlier in Europe and Asia after China cut a key lending benchmark to bolster its weakening economy, helping ini- tially to drive gains on Wall Street. China cut its prime rate for five-year loans, which influences mort- gage prices, by 15 basis pointsinareductionthat was sharper than expect- ed as authorities seek to cushion the impact of an economic slowdown. While a late-day rally stopped the SP 500 from confirming a bear mar- ket, the gloom on Wall Street led the benchmark to fall for the seventh consecutive week, an event that has occurred only five times since 1928, according to SP Dow Jones Indices. How long the down- draft in equities lasts will depend on when in- flation breaks, said Peter Tuz, president of Chase Investment Counsel in Charlottesville, Virginia. “What really flum- moxed investors this week, myself included, is when you have the types of companies that typically do well in eco- nomic softness, do ter- ribly,” Tuz said, refer- ring to poor earnings results at Walmart Inc and Target Corp. Earlier, Elon Musk clinched a deal to buy Twitter for USD 44 billion cash in a transaction that will shift control of the social media platform populated by millions of users and global leaders to the world’s richest person. CNG price hiked by `2 per kg New Delhi (PTI): The price of CNG in Delhi on Saturday was hiked by Rs 2 per kg, the 13th increase in rates in just over two months. CNG in the NCT of Delhi now costs Rs 75.61 per kg, up from Rs 73.61 per kg, according to the information posted on the web- site of IGL -- the firm which retails CNG and piped cooking gas in the national capital and adjoining cities. This is the 13th increase in price since March 7. IT HAPPENED ONLY 5 TIMES SINCE 1928 RBI surplus transfer lowest in a decade New Delhi (PTI): The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) decided to trans- fer its FY22 surplus of Rs 30,307 crore to the government, the lowest dividend in ten years, which will reflect in the Centre’s budgetary calculations in FY23. Its board decided to maintain the contin- gency risk buffer at 5.5%. The dividend is less than a third of the cen- tral bank’s generous transfer of Rs 99,122 crore for FY21, which was, in fact, based on the RBI’s surplus over a nine-month period through March 2021, as it had decided to align its fiscal year with that of the government. Low payout by the central bank, partly due to its heavy invest- ments in reverse repo operations, will drag down the government’s budgeted receipts of Rs 73,948 crore on ac- count of dividends from the RBI, state-run banks and other finan- cial institutions in FY23, unless surplus transfers from other entities rise sharply. In fact, the RBI’s transfer would make up just 41% of the government’s budget- ed receipts for FY23, against almost 98% of the revised estimate for FY22. The drop in the RBI dividend comes at an inopportune time when the Ukraine con- flict has raised the sub- sidy payout by the gov- ernment and threat- ened its bid to contain fiscal deficit at the tar- geted level of 6.4% in FY23, against 6.9% in FY22. Of course, there are still some bright spots. State-run banks re- corded a net profit of Rs 48,874 crore in the first three quarters of FY22, greater than that of Rs 31,820 crore in the entire FY21, which was the highest in five years. Given that their cap- ital adequacy remains sound and provision coverage has im- proved, the govern- ment has a greater scope to nudge them to cough up much higher dividend this fiscal. However, since the government may have to spend an estimated Rs 1.8 trillion over and above the FY23 Budget Estimate on fertiliser and food subsidies, this isn’t a good time for a revenue slippage on any account. Of course, as fi- nance secretary TV Somanathan said, the additional outgo could be offset by a steep jump in net tax re- ceipts and higher dis- investment revenues. Elevated dividend transfer by the RBI, es- pecially since 2018-19, had offered some cush- ion to the government, as it battled an econom- ic slowdown even be- fore the pandemic spread its tentacles. Thanks to the Bimal Jalan committee, which reviewed the RBI’s economic capital framework (ECF), the central bank trans- ferred an all-time high amount of Rs 1.76 tril- lion to the government in 2018-19 (July-June). Transfer would make up just 41% of Govt’s budgeted receipts for FY23, against almost 98% of revised estimate for FY22 CAUSE OF DROP Paytmre-appointsVijayShekharasMDCEO New Delhi (PTI): Vijay Shekhar Sharma has been re-appointed as MD CEO of digital fi- nancial services firm Paytm. Paytm CFO Madhur Deora has been re-ap- pointed by the compa- ny’s board as a whole- time director till May 19, 2027. One97 Communica- tions, which operates under Paytm brand, on Saturday said it has formed a joint venture general insurance com- pany in which it has committed to invest Rs 950 crore over a period of 10 years. The proposal to set up joint venture firm Pay- tm General Insurance Limited (PGIL) was ap- proved by the board on May 20, the company said in a regulatory fil- ing. Post the investment, Paytm will hold 74 per cent stake in PGIL, re- ducing VHPL’s stake in the company to 26 per cent. New Delhi (Agen- cies): IDBI Bank has entered into a share purchase agreement with Ageas Insur- ance International, wherein the bank is looking to sell its re- maining stake of 25 per cent in private sector life insurer Ageas Federal Life Insurance for Rs 580 crore, making Ageas one of the few foreign insurers to raise its stake in its Indian in- surance joint venture to 74 per cent, after the government raised the FDI cap in the insurance sector. “In continuation of the bank’s disclosure dated March 29, 2022, we hereby inform you that IDBI Bank has entered a share pur- chase agreement (SPA) with Ageas In- surance Internation- al NV (Buyer) on May 19, 2022 to sell IDBI Bank’s entire stake of 200,000,000 equity shares in Ageas Fed- eral Life Insurance company pursuant to exercise of call op- tion by Ageas. The transaction will be concluded subject to regulatory approv- als,” the bank said in a notification to the exchanges. IDBI Bank to sell 25% stake in Ageas Federal Life Semiconductor shortage, commodity woes continue to haunt OEMs New Delhi (Agencies): While earlier in 2022, auto original equip- ment manufacturers (OEMs) were expecting an improved demand supply scenario, the turn of events in the last five months means they would now need to temper their expecta- tions. Geopolitical strifes, Covid-19 resur- gence have pro- longed semiconduc- tor shortages and in- duced volatility in fuel prices, thereby hurting demand in the last quar- ter of the previous fis- cal. OEMs have been undertaking price hikes over the last few months owing to the continued input cost pressures. Data shows that while domestic sales volume increased 15.7% on a year-on-year basis, it saw a drop of 5% on a monthly basis due to the multiple price hikes and semi- conductor shortages. Exports too fell 5.7% on an annual basis due to the uptick in oil pric- es and a supply-side crunch as China reels from a resurgence in Covid cases. Pune-based auto com- ponent manufacturer Bharat Forge in its Q4 earnings update earlier this week said that sup- ply chain issues con- tinue to be widespread and are not restricted to semiconductors. ”Addi- tionally, local lock- downs/ geopolitical situation in certain ge- ographies is negatively impacting internation- ally sourced materials and overall causing high inflation,” it said. Dancer among 4 held for Lavani video First India Bureau Pune: A case has been registered at Far- askhana police sta- tion against a female Marathi artiste and three others after a video showed her per- forming dance on a Lavani number on the premises of Lal Ma- hal, where Chhatra- pati Shivaji Maharaj had spent several years of his early life, said a police official on Saturday. Dancer, Vaishnavi Patil, later tendered an apology after some po- litical outfits, including the ruling Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), condemned the dance video. Based on a complaint lodged by the security guard of the Lal Mahal, a case against Patil and three others was regis- tered on Friday night. “Vaishnavi Patil per- formed Lavani dance at the Lal Mahal on Mon- day and people accom- panying her shot a vid- eo of it, which they later posted on social media. As mentioned in his complaint, the security guard, who was on duty there at that time, asked them not to perform dance and shoot on the premises of the monu- ment,” said the police official. Lal Mahal is a red- coloured building lo- cated in the heart of the city, where Maratha warrior king Shivaji Maharaj, a revered fig- ure, spent several years of his childhood. The case against them was filed under Indian Penal Code (IPC) Sections 295 (defiling place of worship with intent to insult the reli- gion of any class) and 186 (voluntarily ob- structing a public serv- ant in the discharge of his public functions), he added. Lavani, a popular folk dance of Maha- rashtra, is known for its sensuous moves. Maharashtra minis- ter and NCP leader Ji- tendra Awhad con- demned the Lavani dance shoot at the Lal Mahal. NCP’s city unit presi- dent Prashant Jagtap announced that a pro- test will be held outside the Lal Mahal on Satur- day afternoon to de- nounce the video. The Pune unit of Sambhaji Brigade, also condemned the video. Delegation also met superintendent, Rajesh More, who said that services will improve Footage was being shot at Lal Mahal, where Shivaji Maharaj spent several years as a child; popular Maha folk dance is known for its sensuous moves ‘Death ritual’ held to protest hospital ‘mismanagement’ First India Bureau Aurangabad: The Ar- chaeological Survey of India (ASI) has dis- covered the remains of a Mughal-era ‘hamam’ (Turkish bath house) about 50 metres from the en- trance gate of the Bi- bi-Ka-Maqbara, a fa- mous replica of the Taj Mahal in Aurang- abad. The structure was unearthed while clearing a massive mound of debris at the site. During the clearance, the ASI also found three trenches, connected with an ancient well, that were filled to the brim. Speaking to the me- dia, ASI’s Superintend- ing Archaeologist Dr Milan Chauley said, “It would be incorrect to term the ongoing work as an excavation. We are carrying out a sci- entific clearance of the mound, which was be- gun some time in Feb- ruary last year.” According to ASI of- ficials, there’s a strong possibility that they will find the remains of a ‘sarai’ (resting place for travellers). The de- sign of the ‘hamam’ in- dicates that it was built during the Mughal era. The officials also stat- ed that if things go as per the plan, tourists will be able get a glimpse of both struc- turesincomingmonths. “It appears that the Mughals built the ‘hamam’, and possibly a ‘sarai’, so that visitors and travellers could bathe and freshen up before entering the Bi- bi-Ka-Maqbara. The Maqbara is a 16th-cen- tury monument built by the Mughals and is known as the Taj of the Deccan,” Chauley said. The ‘sarai,’ which was probably open until 1960, was buried under the debris during an ex- cavation on the road- side. The debris caught Chauley’s attention in February last year. He studied all records of the monument before deciding to go in for a scientific clearance. Possible ‘hamam’ found at Bibi-Ka-Maqbara HISTORIC FIND ASI has also unearthed three trenches, connected with an ancient well, that were once filled to the brim According to ASI officials, the possibilty of finding a ‘sarai’ buried under the debris was ‘very strong’. METICULOUS CHICKEN SANDWICH, RAHUL AND HARDIK The politics of to- day’s era has re- duced the fine line be- tween ‘Nayak’ and ‘Pratinayak’, even though the tradition of singing paeans of one ‘Nayak’ may be attrib- uted to a particular party , but this tradition has been broken in the Congress. It is learned from the sources that when Rahul Gandhi had gone to Gujarat prior to the Udaipur Chintan Shivir, party working president Hardik Patel had reached out to meet him at his luxurious hotel in Ahmedabad. Patel is said to have taken with him a special Gujarati vegetarian dish pre- pared at his home for Rahul. But even in Hardik’s company, Ra- hul found it more appro- priate to order chicken sandwiches from the hotel’s restaurant in- stead of Patel’s home cooked Guja- rati cuisine. Hardik felt bad about this. After this, Hardik handed over a list of about one hundred and fifty influential Gujara- ti people whom he want- ed to be introduced to Rahul. But Rahul ex- pressed his reluctance to meet these people and said that he is in a re- laxed mood now and has to return to Delhi the next day, so this time it will not be possible to meet these people. Ra- hul further told Hardik that if he wanted to in- troduce these people, he can bring them to Delhi. Hardik was displeased with this, and after leav- ing the hotel room, he angrily told some of his trusted friends, “If our leader does not want to come out of the gyms and massage rooms, then only God can save the Congress.” Howev- er, Rahul apparently learned about this com- ment by Hardik and was stunned. Upon reaching Delhi, he complained to his mother about Hardik and said- ‘This man is very rude, we will not call him to Udaipur.’ Sonia tried to pacify Rahul stressing that party works on con- stitution and can not be run on whims and fan- cies. But when Rahul remained a d a m a n t on his stand, a decision was taken that no work- ing presidents would be called in the Udaipur’s Chintan Shivir. But this decision of the high command was criti- cized everywhere. Therefore, in view of the growing dissatisfac- tion in the party, Sonia Gandhi has now decid- ed that ‘very soon the party’s mini contempla- tion camp will be organ- ized, in which state gov- ernmentministersfrom Congress-ruled states of RajasthanandChhat- tisgarh, Maharashtra and Jharkhand, party’s national spokesperson etc about 120 leaders in- cluding working presi- dents will be invited. RAHUL GOES TO LONDON Soon after the end of Udaipur Chintan Shivir, Congress’s re- splendent ‘star’ Rahul Gandhi has reached London. He has gone to London at the invitation of UK-based think-tank ‘Bridge India’, where he is going to participate in the ‘Ideas for India’ con- ference, and along with this Rahul has also de- livered a speech at Cam- bridge University . But surprisingly, earlier in such international fo- rums Rahul was called as a single speaker, but this time the list of speakers speaking in ‘Ideas for India’ is much longer. Congress’s Sal- man Khurshid, Sam Pitroda, CPI(M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury , RJD President Tejashwi Yadav and Ra- jya Sabha MP Manoj Ku- mar Jha, TMC’s fire- brand MP Mahua Moi- tra and TRS’s KT Rama Rao are also going to speakinthisconference. PRIYANKA ANGRY WITH PRAMOD KRISHNAM During a meeting at the Congress’ Chintan Shivir at Udaipur, Congress lead- er Pramod Krishnam demanded, in a loud voice, that Priyanka Gandhi should be made the new president of the party. This demand made Priyanka so un- comfortable that she immediately pointed her eyes at her col- league Deepender Hoo- da. Deepender silenced Acharya Pramod and said, “we are no one to decide the name of the party president, leave this decision to the par- ty and the family.” Af- ter this, it was Mall- ikarjun Kharge direct- ed his anger at Acharya Pramod and scolded Acharya in a slightly loud voice saying, “You keep quiet, it is not your job to decide this nor is it a forum to raise such an issue.” After the meeting was over, Acharya Pramod took Sachin Pilot along to meet Priyanka. As soon as the duo arrived at Priyanka’s room, Pri- yanka could not control her anger and she scolded Acharya say- ing, “You need to im- prove yourself. Do not even try to create a quarrel in the family. You try to publicize out- side that you are my political advisor, today, you tell me how many of your messages do I reply to?” While Acha- rya Pramod Krishnam stood there without a word from his side, it was Sachin Pilot who handled the matter and somehow quelled Pri- yanka’s anger. YOUR DAY Horoscope by Saurabbh Sachdeva RAINU SINGH singh.rainu@gmail.com his question, creating big- ger fault lines in American society, has snowballed into a raging debate. So far, the most extreme Pro-choice re- buttal has come from an unexpected source. A woman holding up a placard in a demon- stration against the likely verdict of a con- servative “Republi- can” Supreme Court Bench: “HE WHO HATHNOTAUTERUS SHOULD SHUT THE F$#KETH UP”, a paro- dy on Biblical quotes. Thisbitingcommentis againstthecynical,un- progressive lawmak- ers, ostensiblydrawing their logic from the Christian faith. TheBibleisthefoun- tainhead of Christian morality and speaks loudly against Abor- tion: “God will not hold any blameless for the death of Innocents” But humanity, hav- ing evolved for more than 2000 years, chal- lenges that gospel’s truth”. Among the Nine Su- preme Court Judges, conservative ones are in a majority now, with President Trump hav- ing appointed 3 judges inhothasteinhisshort 4-year term. Grabbing this opportunity , they have conspired to excavate a 50-year old Law, settled via the historic 7-2 ver- dict of 1973, famously called ROE V . WADE. Upturning that Law will be akin to igniting powder kegs in an al- ready divided society . The minority Con- servativesupportersof the proposed new Law on Abortion are sup- posed to be traditional- ists. Doesn’t a 50-year- old practice become a tradition too?? Having said that, we now come to the core issue of PRO-LIFE vs PRO-CHOICE. Who determines the exact time when a hu- man comes into being after concep- tion ?? The dis- putantson b o t h sides ad- v o c a t e different stages of pregnancy for deter- mining when it’s mor- ally right to snuff out Life inside the womb. Its common knowl- edge that the moment a conception takes place, the joint energy of a malefemalestirsLife inside the womb, lead- ing to the birth of a hu- man. To say that it’s only sinful to abort af- ter 6, 16 or 24 weeks are just ruses by unwitting opposing sides. Some argue that it’s the first heartbeat of the foetus, happening between weeks 5-6 of gestation, that is the sole criteria to deter- mine the beginning of Life. Others link hu- man life to mind con- sciousness.Thisneural integration is said to take place between 24- 28 weeks. These are conflicting views of cold science. What hap- pens in the warm con- fines of the womb are unanswered questions of morality , choice and survival. In all this confusion, the one proper person with the real answer is the one bearing life in her Uterus: THE MOTHER !! A Woman, always placed on an unequal footing,hasbeendevas- tated by choices thrust upon her. Great think- ers social reformers argued for a woman’s right over her body, with Guru Nanak fur- ther raising her status to one below God, but above man’s. Such thoughts did setoff anevolutionthat led to sawing off the shackles of woman’s choice on Abortion. But unfortunately, hu- manity may slide back if anti-choice laws are enacted again. America being the beacon of democratic values, is looked upon by growing democra- cies for guidance. If the proposed dark law up- ends a 50-year-old prac- tice, it will throw a long shadow over liberal valuesacrosstheworld. The right-wingers eve- rywhere will be quick to grab this polarising issue and thrust this patriarchal system upon society . The Republicans are pushing for this obso- lete idea, not for moral values, or even to pro- tect life, but to turn the USAintoatheocracyto control punish wom- en. This debate from the right corner is not about religious princi- ples either. It’s about accumulating power via this political crow- bar that deals out fear and cynically turns women against each othertominimizetheir collective power. It is built on oppression to controlwomen’slives bodies. Childbirth is a wom- an’s domain. She bears the pain, pleasure and hormonal/emotional upheaval for long months. She knows best whether to abort ornot.Therearescores of health, social, finan- cial, and other reasons that may influence her decision. It’s a very delicateissue,notacut- and-dry cookie cutter. Please do not shred the emotional tapestry of the woman, God’s sec- ond-in-command !! The opposite of Abortion is not Motherhood. It is Injustice.
