Jaipur: Officers and
Circle Inspectors are
going to be punished at
the district level in the
Excise Department af-
ter the failure of the
excise settlement. Ac-
tion can be taken
against them like put-
ting on APO and giving
chargesheet.
On Tuesday, in a
stern action against
non-performers, an ex-
cise officer from Tonk,
Anil Yadav was put on
APO. He was replaced
by Bhanwari Lal Mee-
na from Sawai Mad-
hopur. Excise Commis-
sioner Chetan Deora
issued the order. The
figures of performance
audit conducted at Fi-
nance Dept level are
shocking. There are
only four districts with
morethan50% achieve-
ment in liquor shops
renewal, while 14 are
below 30 %. A provision
was made for renewal
this time in state’s New
Excise Policy but licen-
sees opposed it. Thus,
out of total 7,665 shops,
only 2,501 shops could
be renewed.
The Excise depart-
ment is incurring a loss
of about Rs 30 to 40
crore daily. There is a
partial dry day situa-
tion in Raj since April 1.
Hence, the Excise Dept
has issued a release for
auction of shops on
April 8, 11 12.

MATUAS: ‘NEGLECTED’ BUT BEING
WOOED FOR POLITICAL GAINS
Whatever be the cause,
the Matuas... today are a
bewildered lot and they
quite rightfully believe
that their political
demand is not being
addressed by anyone...
even as every party is
playing the charmers’
role to earn brownie
points from the sect. The
Modi government’s
failure to frame and
notify the rules of the
Citizenship (Amendment)
Act seems to have cost the
BJP dearly in the West
Bengal Assembly elections,
with the Trinamool
Congress getting the
better of the saffron
party in seats dominated
by the Matuas
orthelastfewyearsinWest
Bengal politics, the Matua
factor has been worrying
all major parties... and
which way they go is the
cynosure of all eyes... how-
ever,nonearetakingchanc-
es as far as wooing the com-
munity is concerned!
If CM has announced a
state holiday for the birth
anniversary of the founder
of the sect, in a late-night
virtual address, the PM ad-
dressed them with his best
wishes. Understandably,
the Union minister from
the community, Shantanu
Thakur had said... what-
ever political parties do...
as long as it benefits or up-
lifts the stature of the com-
munity it is ok.
Let’s try to understand
why the Matuas are impor-
tant for political parties.
Matuaisasectthatbelongs
to the Namasudra caste.
The Matuas came to WB
from Bangladesh after Par-
tition as refugees. Matua
Mahasangha is an umbrel-
la organisation that was
formed through religious
reforms. The Mahasangha
was established by
Harichand Thakur in the
mid-19th Century
. Howev-
er, the movement of this
sect became popular under
the leadership of Guru-
chandThakur,Harichand’s
son. Harichand preached
love, tolerance, gender
equality and non-distinc-
tion irrespective of caste,
class and creed. After Par-
tition, thousands of Matu-
as crossed over to WB, and
Harichand’s grandson
Pramatha Ranjan Thakur
set up the sect’s headquar-
ters at Thakurnagar in
North 24 Parganas district,
West Bengal.
Initially
, the Matuas had
sided with the Congress
Bengal but they gradually
drifted away to the Left
camp since 1977. However,
after several heartburns
between the sect members
and the Left leaders, the
Front was not willing to
provide them with citizen-
ship and land rights, how-
ever, in 2010... Late Boro
Ma, the matriarch of the
Matua Mahasangha, had
switched over to the TMC.
Till 2019, the communi-
ty was entirely with
Mamata Banerjee’s TMC.
The scenario was “des-
tined” to change, however,
with the demise of Boro
Ma as the family was verti-
cally divided in this re-
spect. If of her sons stayed
with TMC, the other (son)
and his family sided with
the BJP. Geographically,
Bengal shares a huge bor-
der area with Bangladesh
and has a huge number of
voters who belong to the
kin of refugees and hence
their votes mean a lot to
any party in West Bengal
incidentally, Matuas are
the largest section of Hin-
du refugees, therefore,
they play a vital role in the
husting.
In the 2014 LS and 2016
assembly elections, largely
due to the blessings of the
lateBinapaniDeviThakur,
the TMC ruled the area
with Matua support. The
winds changed and the
fluttering of the Saffron
flag in the 2019 parliamen-
tary polls was a matter of
fact... but the political acu-
men of Mamata helped the
TMC to regain some lost
ground in Matua-dominat-
ed areas thereafter.
The Namasudras form
one of the largest chunks
of SCs in Bengal, compris-
ing 17.4% of the popula-
tion, behind Rajbanshis
(18.4%), according to the
2001 Census information.
The BJP has been wooing
the Namasudras heavily
(with the Matuas its big-
gest group), together total-
ling about 1.5 crore voters,
with presence in at least 42
Assembly seats spread
across North 24 Parganas,
Nadia and some parts of
North Bengal.
In the 2019 LS polls...the
BJP led in 33 of the total
68 SC-reserved Assembly
segments in the state. Of
these 33 seats, 26 are Mat-
ua-dominated. The Trina-
mool led in 34 segments
while the Congress and
Left in only three. In 26 As-
sembly seats in North 24
Parganas and Nadia dis-
tricts where Matuas have
a dominating presence,
the BJP won 14 seats in
the 2021 crucial Assembly
polls while the TMC
bagged 12. In 2019, the BJP
led in all 26 Matua-domi-
nated seats in these two
districts.
It is obvious that if the
Dalits do not get proper
representation in any po-
litical party, it will be an
irritating factor for them.
However, in a bid to pacify
them, Senior BJP leader
BL Santhosh and Bengal
BJP chief Sukanta Ma-
jumdar have already spo-
ken to Shantanu Thakur.
Also to make matters
worse for the BJP... Mama-
ta Banerjee had taken sev-
eral important steps to aid
the community and uplift
their lives... following
such beneficial schemes...
a good number of people
from the sect have started
also showing a leaning to-
wards the TMC.
THE CAA
HEARTBURN
The community has been
demanding the amend-
ment of the Citizenship
Act, 2003, for a long time.
The Matuas believe that
the provisions of the Citi-
zenship Act of 2003 had
made it difficult for them
to get citizenship. Mean-
while, after the communi-
ty supported the BJP dur-
ing the crucial 2019 Lok
Sabha elections, the party
in the same year brought
the controversial CAA.
The community believed
that after the implementa-
tion of CAA they will get
their citizenship.
The Mahasangh has
been fighting for citizen-
ship for the past 20 years.
After the CAA was
brought...peopleof thesect
werehopefulof gettingciti-
zenship. People of the sect
areinafixoverthefactthat
since the TMC has already
declared that they will not
implementtheCAAandthe
current silence of the Cen-
treontheissuemightagain
sweep the matter under the
carpet.
With their original de-
mand of implementing
CAA put on the back burn-
er, the BJP lost quite a
ground to the TMC in the
Assembly election. How-
ever, no party is leaving
any stone unturned in
their bid to woo the sect,
which can easily turn the
political tide of any party
if it comes together.
THE PRICKLY
CAA ISSUE
The citizenship screening
drive in Assam through
the NRCitizens triggered
panic among the Matuas
and the BJP’s promise for
protection against such
probable citizenship
screening exercise in West
Bengal won them their
(Matuas) confidence.
While the TMC had for-
mally opposed the CAA,
the party also launched a
campaign from the end of
2020 asking why the Centre
was not being able to frame
the Rules for the CAA even
a year after its passage by
the Parliament. It was be-
cause the Rules would fur-
ther complicate matters
for the Matuas, the TMC
alleged, while Union home
minister Amit Shah attrib-
uted the delay to the gov-
ernment’s preoccupation
with handling the Covid-19
pandemic.
Whatever be the cause,
the Matuas... today are a
bewildered lot and they
quite rightfully believe
that their political demand
is not being addressed by
anyone... even as every
partyisplayingthecharm-
ers’ role to earn brownie
points from the sect.
The Modi government’s
failure to frame and notify
the rules of the Citizen-
ship (Amendment) Act
seems to have cost the BJP
dearly in the West Bengal
Assembly elections, with
the Trinamool Congress
getting the better of the
saffron party in seats dom-
inated by the Matuas.

Thakur, who won the (Bongaon) seat riding the crest of sup-

fact that the joint president of the All In-

that the state committee of the BJP has

and injured a Pandit
shopkeeper Bal Kris-
han near his shop.
The Pandit families,
who had stayed on in
the Valley and did not
migrate in the 1990s,
have maintained si-
lence and refused to
talk to the media for
fear of retribution af-
ter the attack. “We are
hopeful that locals will
safeguard us, like in
the past 30 years,” a mi-
nority member said, on
the condition of ano-
nymity
. A little-known
outfit, the Kashmir
Freedom Fighters
(KFF), has claimed re-
sponsibility for the at-
tack at Choutigam vil-
lage of Shopian. “The
cadre of the KFF shot
and critically injured
the Kashmiri Pandit.
He was hand in glove
with the BJP and was
also involved in many
immoral activities,” a
KFF spokesman
claimed.
The police have not,
however, confirmed
the veracity of the out-
fit’s claim. Officials
said Bal Krishan, who
is in hospital, is stable.
However, the incident
has pushed the three
remaining Pandit fami-
lies to maintain a low
profile in their own vil-
lages, in the face of
back-to-back targeted
attacks on civilians.

ATTACK ON KASHMIRI PANDIT
Srinagar (Agencies): The Muslim neighbours of a
Kashmiri Pandit, who was shot at and injured by terror-
ists, on Tuesday said they are solidly behind the family in
their hour of crisis. On Monday evening terrorists fired
at and injured Sonu Kumar of Chotagam village in South
Kashmir’s Shopian district. “It is very wrong and against
the teachings of Islam. He is a farmer like us and a very
helpful person. He is always ready to help others, we
live like brothers,” Mukhtar Ahmad, neighbour of Sonu
Kumar said. Earlier on Monday, the terrorists shot and
injured two non-local labourers in Pulwama. Terrorists
also shot at and injured two CRPF jawans at Maisuma in
Srinagar. One of the injured jawans later succumbed to
his injuries in the hospital. Director General JK Police
(DGP) Dilbag Singh told reporters on Tuesday that ter-
rorists were enemies of people and their handlers across
the border can’t digest the fact that people in Kashmir
are leading a peaceful life. He said these attacks show
the insane nature of terrorists.

Jaipur: The Tata
group is counted
among the most trust-
ed brands in India,
however, amongst the
many companies oper-
ated by the group, the
customers are losing
their trust in one of
them. Passengers are
losing confidence in
AirAsia, the airline in
which Tata group has
84% stake. This airline
is running most irreg-
ularly these days at
Jaipur airport. The
data of flight opera-
tions for the last 3
months is a testimony
to this fact as Air Asia
flights from Jaipur are
cancelled at any time.
The reason for the
cancellation of the
flight is also not explic-
itly given to the passen-
gers and they are given
the option to resched-
ule the flight or get a
refund. But for the pas-
sengers who have to fly
for some important
and urgent work, their
problem increases.
Even though coun-
try’s largest airline In-
digo is also one of
those that face flight
cancellations, but the
worst situation is of
Air Asia airline, which
has been the most ir-
regular at Jaipur air-
port in recent times. In
the period from Janu-
ary 4 to April 4, a total
of 6 flights of Air Asia
have operated from
Jaipur Airport. But
only 2 of these flights
could fly while the re-
maining 4 flights were
canceled in about half
a day
.
At present, a total of
6 flights of airline oper-
ate from Jaipur, but out
of these 4 flights are ir-
regular, due to which
the passengers have to
face problems.

Meanwhile, there is also
discussion that Tata Group,

even this will not solve the

known as the
“Land of
Kings,” is one
of India’s
most popular
tourist destinations. It
captures hearts at the
first glimpse with its
sumptuous palaces,
mediaeval forts, and a
multitude of cultural
offers. Here’s a look at
the history of India’s
royal state.
Ancient civilization
Rajasthan has been in-
habited for thousands
of years, according to
archaeological studies.
Its origins can be found
in the Indus Valley
Civilisation. The earli-
est people to settle on
the embankment of
the Sarasvati River,
which originates in Ra-
jasthan’s Aravalli
mountain range, were
the Harappans. How-
ever, the land was sub-
jected to significant
climatic changes and
was flooded, resulting
in its abandonment.
It remained devoid of
human settlements for
a long time until tribal
populations such as
the Bhils and Meena
moved here. In addi-
tion, the Aryans are
said to have arrived in
the area approximate-
ly 2,000 BC, followed by
the Mauryan dynasty
from 321 to 184 BCE.
Due to the state’s stra-
tegic location and the
presence of numerous
ancient rivers, such as
the Sarasvati and the
Drishadvati, it drew
the attention of several
empires, including the
Hunas, Arjunyas, and
Yaudheyas among oth-
ers.
In the 4th century,
the Gupta dynasty cap-
tured the realm and
established several
Buddhist temples and
caves in the Jhalawar
area. The Guptas’ pow-
er and influence began
to wane in the sixth
century
.
Medieval period
The Rajput dynasty
took over the state in
the 9th century, and it
was the most prosper-
ous period in Ra-
jasthan’s history. The
Rajputs were fighters,
and the state flour-
ished by leaps and
bounds under their
control. Walking
through Rajasthan’s
streets, you’ll notice
grand ancient land-
marks such as forts,
palaces, and temples
created by the Rajput
clan. However, the Ra-
jput kingdom was di-
vided into 21 dynasties
and 36 royal clans over
the years. They had
lost their cohesiveness.
The Chauhans con-
quered Rajasthan in
the 10th century, but
they couldn’t keep it
for long. The Muslim
sultanate established
itself in several re-
gions of Rajasthan by
1200 A.D. after defeat-
ing the Chauhan dy-
nasty in 1192 CE.
With his eye on Mewar,
the most powerful seat
in the early 13th cen-
tury the Akbar formu-
lated friendships with
several Rajput lords in
the forms of marriage
and trade proposals.
In 1526, Akbar defeated
Udai Singh in a battle
in which Akbar seized
control of Mewar’s
capital, Chittorgarh.
After this, almost all of
Rajputana fell under
Akbar’s rule.
The Battle of Hal-
dighati, fought be-
tween Akbar and Ma-
harana Pratap in 1576,
left Rana Pratap grave-
ly injured and forced
him to live in seclusion
for several years.
Meanwhile, Akbar
conquered, Udaipur,
Kumbhalgarh, Chap-
pan, Gogunda, and
other areas. Eventual-
ly, during the Battle of
Dewair in 1582, Rana
Pratap fought back
and drove the Mughals
out of Mewar and
much of Rajasthan.

The Modi government’s failure to frame and notify the rules of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act seems to have cost the BJP dearly in the West Bengal Assembly elections, with the Trinamool Congress getting the better of the saffron party in seats dominated by the Matuas orthelastfewyearsinWest Bengal politics, the Matua factor has been worrying all major parties... and which way they go is the cynosure of all eyes... how- ever,nonearetakingchanc- es as far as wooing the com- munity is concerned! If CM has announced a state holiday for the birth anniversary of the founder of the sect, in a late-night virtual address, the PM ad- dressed them with his best wishes. Understandably, the Union minister from the community, Shantanu Thakur had said... what- ever political parties do... as long as it benefits or up- lifts the stature of the com- munity it is ok. Let’s try to understand why the Matuas are impor- tant for political parties. Matuaisasectthatbelongs to the Namasudra caste. The Matuas came to WB from Bangladesh after Par- tition as refugees. Matua Mahasangha is an umbrel- la organisation that was formed through religious reforms. The Mahasangha was established by Harichand Thakur in the mid-19th Century . Howev- er, the movement of this sect became popular under the leadership of Guru- chandThakur,Harichand’s son. Harichand preached love, tolerance, gender equality and non-distinc- tion irrespective of caste, class and creed. After Par- tition, thousands of Matu- as crossed over to WB, and Harichand’s grandson Pramatha Ranjan Thakur set up the sect’s headquar- ters at Thakurnagar in North 24 Parganas district, West Bengal. Initially , the Matuas had sided with the Congress Bengal but they gradually drifted away to the Left camp since 1977. However, after several heartburns between the sect members and the Left leaders, the Front was not willing to provide them with citizen- ship and land rights, how- ever, in 2010... Late Boro Ma, the matriarch of the Matua Mahasangha, had switched over to the TMC. Till 2019, the communi- ty was entirely with Mamata Banerjee’s TMC. The scenario was “des- tined” to change, however, with the demise of Boro Ma as the family was verti- cally divided in this re- spect. If of her sons stayed with TMC, the other (son) and his family sided with the BJP. Geographically, Bengal shares a huge bor- der area with Bangladesh and has a huge number of voters who belong to the kin of refugees and hence their votes mean a lot to any party in West Bengal incidentally, Matuas are the largest section of Hin- du refugees, therefore, they play a vital role in the husting. In the 2014 LS and 2016 assembly elections, largely due to the blessings of the lateBinapaniDeviThakur, the TMC ruled the area with Matua support. The winds changed and the fluttering of the Saffron flag in the 2019 parliamen- tary polls was a matter of fact... but the political acu- men of Mamata helped the TMC to regain some lost ground in Matua-dominat- ed areas thereafter. The Namasudras form one of the largest chunks of SCs in Bengal, compris- ing 17.4% of the popula- tion, behind Rajbanshis (18.4%), according to the 2001 Census information. The BJP has been wooing the Namasudras heavily (with the Matuas its big- gest group), together total- ling about 1.5 crore voters, with presence in at least 42 Assembly seats spread across North 24 Parganas, Nadia and some parts of North Bengal. In the 2019 LS polls...the BJP led in 33 of the total 68 SC-reserved Assembly segments in the state. Of these 33 seats, 26 are Mat- ua-dominated. The Trina- mool led in 34 segments while the Congress and Left in only three. In 26 As- sembly seats in North 24 Parganas and Nadia dis- tricts where Matuas have a dominating presence, the BJP won 14 seats in the 2021 crucial Assembly polls while the TMC bagged 12. In 2019, the BJP led in all 26 Matua-domi- nated seats in these two districts. It is obvious that if the Dalits do not get proper representation in any po- litical party, it will be an irritating factor for them. However, in a bid to pacify them, Senior BJP leader BL Santhosh and Bengal BJP chief Sukanta Ma- jumdar have already spo- ken to Shantanu Thakur. Also to make matters worse for the BJP... Mama- ta Banerjee had taken sev- eral important steps to aid the community and uplift their lives... following such beneficial schemes... a good number of people from the sect have started also showing a leaning to- wards the TMC. THE CAA HEARTBURN The community has been demanding the amend- ment of the Citizenship Act, 2003, for a long time. The Matuas believe that the provisions of the Citi- zenship Act of 2003 had made it difficult for them to get citizenship. Mean- while, after the communi- ty supported the BJP dur- ing the crucial 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the party in the same year brought the controversial CAA. The community believed that after the implementa- tion of CAA they will get their citizenship. The Mahasangh has been fighting for citizen- ship for the past 20 years. After the CAA was brought...peopleof thesect werehopefulof gettingciti- zenship. People of the sect areinafixoverthefactthat since the TMC has already declared that they will not implementtheCAAandthe current silence of the Cen- treontheissuemightagain sweep the matter under the carpet. With their original de- mand of implementing CAA put on the back burn- er, the BJP lost quite a ground to the TMC in the Assembly election. How- ever, no party is leaving any stone unturned in their bid to woo the sect, which can easily turn the political tide of any party if it comes together. THE PRICKLY CAA ISSUE The citizenship screening drive in Assam through the NRCitizens triggered panic among the Matuas and the BJP’s promise for protection against such probable citizenship screening exercise in West Bengal won them their (Matuas) confidence. While the TMC had for- mally opposed the CAA, the party also launched a campaign from the end of 2020 asking why the Centre was not being able to frame the Rules for the CAA even a year after its passage by the Parliament. It was be- cause the Rules would fur- ther complicate matters for the Matuas, the TMC alleged, while Union home minister Amit Shah attrib- uted the delay to the gov- ernment’s preoccupation with handling the Covid-19 pandemic. Whatever be the cause, the Matuas... today are a bewildered lot and they quite rightfully believe that their political demand is not being addressed by anyone... even as every partyisplayingthecharm- ers’ role to earn brownie points from the sect. The Modi government’s failure to frame and notify the rules of the Citizen- ship (Amendment) Act seems to have cost the BJP dearly in the West Bengal Assembly elections, with the Trinamool Congress getting the better of the saffron party in seats dom- inated by the Matuas. THE VIEWS EXPRESSED BY THE AUTHOR ARE PERSONAL F ROBIN ROY The writer is Senior Associate Editor, Free Press Journal, Mumbai and former Managing Editor, First India Matua is a sect that belongs to the Namasudra caste. The Matuas came to WB from Bangladesh after Partition as refugees. Matua Mahasangha is an umbrella organisation that was formed through religious reforms. Thakur, who won the (Bongaon) seat riding the crest of sup- port for the BJP’s ‘citizenship promise’ to the Matua com- munity, seems to be in a spot following the fact that the joint president of the All In- dia Matua Mahasangha has been miss- ing from the political meetings of the BJP in recent months! For some time now, representatives of the commu- nity have gone on an attacking mode against the West Bengal unit of the BJP. SHANTANU THAKUR also criticised the Saffron party’s state unit. The leaders of the community are aggrieved over the fact that the state committee of the BJP has not given representation to the Matuas. S

Kashiram Choudhary Jaipur: The Tata group is counted among the most trust- ed brands in India, however, amongst the many companies oper- ated by the group, the customers are losing their trust in one of them. Passengers are losing confidence in AirAsia, the airline in which Tata group has 84% stake. This airline is running most irreg- ularly these days at Jaipur airport. The data of flight opera- tions for the last 3 months is a testimony to this fact as Air Asia flights from Jaipur are cancelled at any time. The reason for the cancellation of the flight is also not explic- itly given to the passen- gers and they are given the option to resched- ule the flight or get a refund. But for the pas- sengers who have to fly for some important and urgent work, their problem increases. Even though coun- try’s largest airline In- digo is also one of those that face flight cancellations, but the worst situation is of Air Asia airline, which has been the most ir- regular at Jaipur air- port in recent times. In the period from Janu- ary 4 to April 4, a total of 6 flights of Air Asia have operated from Jaipur Airport. But only 2 of these flights could fly while the re- maining 4 flights were canceled in about half a day . • 11. a j a s t h a n , s o m e t i m e s known as the “Land of Kings,” is one of India’s most popular tourist destinations. It captures hearts at the first glimpse with its sumptuous palaces, mediaeval forts, and a multitude of cultural offers. Here’s a look at the history of India’s royal state. Ancient civilization Rajasthan has been in- habited for thousands of years, according to archaeological studies. Its origins can be found in the Indus Valley Civilisation. The earli- est people to settle on the embankment of the Sarasvati River, which originates in Ra- jasthan’s Aravalli mountain range, were the Harappans. How- ever, the land was sub- jected to significant climatic changes and was flooded, resulting in its abandonment. It remained devoid of human settlements for a long time until tribal populations such as the Bhils and Meena moved here. In addi- tion, the Aryans are said to have arrived in the area approximate- ly 2,000 BC, followed by the Mauryan dynasty from 321 to 184 BCE. Due to the state’s stra- tegic location and the presence of numerous ancient rivers, such as the Sarasvati and the Drishadvati, it drew the attention of several empires, including the Hunas, Arjunyas, and Yaudheyas among oth- ers. In the 4th century, the Gupta dynasty cap- tured the realm and established several Buddhist temples and caves in the Jhalawar area. The Guptas’ pow- er and influence began to wane in the sixth century . Medieval period The Rajput dynasty took over the state in the 9th century, and it was the most prosper- ous period in Ra- jasthan’s history. The Rajputs were fighters, and the state flour- ished by leaps and bounds under their control. Walking through Rajasthan’s streets, you’ll notice grand ancient land- marks such as forts, palaces, and temples created by the Rajput clan. However, the Ra- jput kingdom was di- vided into 21 dynasties and 36 royal clans over the years. They had lost their cohesiveness. The Chauhans con- quered Rajasthan in the 10th century, but they couldn’t keep it for long. The Muslim sultanate established itself in several re- gions of Rajasthan by 1200 A.D. after defeat- ing the Chauhan dy- nasty in 1192 CE. With his eye on Mewar, the most powerful seat in the early 13th cen- tury the Akbar formu- lated friendships with several Rajput lords in the forms of marriage and trade proposals. In 1526, Akbar defeated Udai Singh in a battle in which Akbar seized control of Mewar’s capital, Chittorgarh. After this, almost all of Rajputana fell under Akbar’s rule. The Battle of Hal- dighati, fought be- tween Akbar and Ma- harana Pratap in 1576, left Rana Pratap grave- ly injured and forced him to live in seclusion for several years. Meanwhile, Akbar conquered, Udaipur, Kumbhalgarh, Chap- pan, Gogunda, and other areas. Eventual- ly, during the Battle of Dewair in 1582, Rana Pratap fought back and drove the Mughals out of Mewar and much of Rajasthan. The rise of the Mar- atha Empire and the emergence of the Brit- ish East India Compa- ny . The Maratha Em- pire rose to dominance in the early 18th cen- tury . The Maratha Em- pire advanced to the north of Rajasthan and merged with the Rajputs under the au- thority of Peshwa Baji Rao I of Pune. The ma- jority of Rajput- ruled king- doms re- mained un- der the Mara- t h a E m - p i r e ’ s adminis- tration. Lat- er, the East India Company partnered with the majority of Rajput kingdoms resulting in the foundation of Ra- jasthan (then known as ‘Rajputana’) as an au- tonomous state. James Tod, an East India Company employee who was enthralled by the state’s beauty and luxury , popularised the moniker “Rajasthan.” Rajasthan today Rajasthan, as we know it now, was founded in seven stag- es and is now the big- gest state in the Indian Republic. It is home to eight U N E - S C O World Heritage Sites, and the state’s beauti- ful palaces, vi- brant towns, and indigenous hamlets continue to be its backbone. 10 ETC JAIPUR | WEDNESDAY, APRIL 6, 2022 www.firstindia.co.in I www.firstindia.co.in/epaper/ I twitter.com/thefirstindia I facebook.com/thefirstindia I instagram.com/thefirstindia LEO JULY 24 - AUGUST 23 You will succeed in resolving misunderstanding with family members, normalizing ties.
