6. Potassium an overview
Essential element for all living organisms.
In plants it is second essential element after
nitrogen.
Potassium involve in plant growth.
7. History of potassium
Potassium symbol k comes from kallum.
Potassium was the first metal that was isolated by
electrolysis.
8. Occurance of potassium
Soil usually contain large amount of K.
But most soil K is fixed and unavailable to plants.
Large amounts of k are removed with alfalfa and
other forages.
9. Potassium in the soil
The total k contents of the soil exceeds
20,000ppm.
10. Kinds of potassium
On the bases of availability.
Unavailable k contained in soil and some clay
minerals.
Slowly available k held by clay mineral and
organic soil.
Readily available k is dissolve in soil water.
11. Factors afecting the transport of k in
soil
Wetting or drying
Freezing
Oxidation state of fe
Soil temperature
Leaching
Soil pH
12.
13. Role in plants
It effects the shape, size, colour and taste.
Plants absorb potassium in ionic form K+.
In photosynthesis potassium regulates the opening
and closing of stomata.
It play role in regulation of water in plants.
14. Deficiency symptoms of potassium
Chlorosis
Stunt growth
Defoliation
Poor resistance to drought
15.
16. INFLUENCE OF POTASSIUM ON CROPS
QUALITY
The economic return
Improvement in total yield
better crop quality
Disease resistance
Lower cost per unit of production
17. Application of potassium fertilizer
Incorporate for most of crops.
Broadcast when large amount of k required unless
soil has high fixing capacity.
Starter care must be taken when applied near
seed.
Top dressing effective on perennial basis.
18.
19. Enviromental effects of potassium
Potassium has no known deletrious effect on the
quality of natural water.
Small amount of leached k in water presents no
ecological threat.
