5. • In the periodical Theoretical and Applied Climatology there is a study about
glaciers in centerwestern Piedmont, a region in Northern Italy
• Mid-way through the XIX century, there were 96 glaciers. In 2006, only 40.
• Thanks to the last registry of the glaciers, we know that in 1970 the total
surface was of 579 km2, whereas now it is of 370 km2.
7. Heat Waves
● Period of excessively hot weather, measured relative to the usual
weather and to the normal temperatures for the season in the area.
● Record high temperatures in Europe, during summer 2003, caused
70000 deaths.
8. • They are related to pression anomalies, as we can see in this formula:
9. Floods
● Overflow of water that submerges land which is usually dry.
● It may occur as an overflow of water from water bodies or as an
accumulation of rainwater on a saturated ground.
● During the last years, flood and overflows have increased,
especially in Veneto.
10. Future effects on Italians waters
● The waters acidification
● An increase in hydrogeological risk
● The loss of about a half of our sea life: a consequence of glaciers melting.
● Erosion of coastline and an higher likelihood for floods’ possibility
● In particular, the areas that are most at risk in Italy are the Po Valley and the Lagoon of Venice
11. Venice and climate change
● Venice has always suffered unexpected floods but, if we don’t do something
immediately; this beautiful city risks disappearing under the sea forever.
