3. SOS CHILDREN'S VILLAGE. Tadjourah, Djibouti.
Office: Urko Sánchez Architects
Year: Construction completed in 2014
Built surface: 2.600m2
Prices/Mentions: Architecture for Social Gain 2015: Built Project-Merit Certificate and
ArchMarathon Award 2016, 1
st
Prize.
Project architect from preliminary sketches to construction completion for the NGO SOS
Kinderdorf International of a village for around 100 children. In a very tight plot and extremely
hot environment, we decided to design a small city following the local system of narrow
streets allowing shade and natural ventilation and introducing wind towers. We allowed for
free shaded spaces and pedestrian streets for children to meet and play in a safe space.
4. SOS SECONDARY SCHOOL. Hargeisa, Somaliland (Somalia).
Office: Urko Sánchez Architects
Year: Construction completed in 2014
Built Area: 1.900m2
Project architect for Detailed Design and construction process. Secondary School for the
NGO SOS Kinderdorf in the independent North region of Somalia. We designed a very
practical and accessible building, especially for the youngest’s classes which are located in
the ground floor around courtyards that are used as playgrounds too. The Secondary level
classes are on the 1
st
floor and share an active playing area for team sports.
The whole complex roofs collect the rainfall during the wet season. The water is stored in a
small iconic tower and it is used during the dry months of the year.
5. TUDOR APARTMENTS. Mombasa, Kenya.
Office: Urko Sánchez Architects
Year: Under construction (works commencement in August 2014)
Surface: 4.000m2
Prizes/Mentions: AAK-Excellence in Architecture: Best Residential Project, 2013-H.M.
Project architect during design and beginning of construction. For this 14 apartment building
in Mombasa creek we focused on the integration of the qualities of contemporary housing
with the design and concepts of the Swahili architecture typical of the Kenyan coast. The
bearing structure is a big ‘mashrabiya’ shell that creates privacy while allowing for natural
ventilation and light. The shell opens towards the creek for views. Adaptation to the natural
terrain generates different house typologies.
6. CASUARINA APARTMENTS. Malindi, Kenya.
Office: Urko Sánchez Architects
Year: Detailed Design (2014)
Surface: 4.600m2
Project architect during detailed design of a 16 apartment building in Malindi on the Kenyan
coast. Due to the neighbouring plots not being built yet, we designed a fortress like building
to ensure privacy. We created a monumental access which connects with the inner garden
favouring cross ventilation. The apartments open themselves into the garden, conceived as
a private oasis, meanwhile towards the other facades the typical Swahili wooden lattice
windows provide solar protection, privacy and natural ventilation.
7. CONTEMPORARY SWAHILI TOWN. Vipingo, Kenya. (Page 1/2)
Office: Urko Sánchez Architects
Year: Detail Design (2012)
Surface: 50.000m2
Team architect during all design phases for this urban scale project on the Kenyan coast. The
project consists of over 100 living units of different typologies, incorporating leisure and
commercial areas in a 65 acre (26 Ha) plot. We melted the Kenyan coast architectural style
with the demands and needs of a 21st-century client. The result, a modern Swahili village, will
keep the Swahili atmosphere featuring traditional courtyards, open-air elements that bring
the exterior space into the home, reclaimed wood, lime, high ceilings and thick bearing
walls. On the other hand, we incorporate western uses of space, including glass, concrete
and open views with connection to the garden.
9. TWO ATTACHED HOUSES IN VERA. Almería, Spain.
Collaboration with: Sabin Larrañaga, Architect.
Year: Construction completed (2010)
Built Area: 200m2
In a small plot on the coast of Spain, we designed these compact but practical houses
ensuring natural ventilation and light and use of the exterior spaces optimising the total area
used. The finishes and materials follow the typical construction style of the area, the “White
Architecture” of the South of Spain.
