3. Monarchy
Monarchy was the most common
form of government until the 19th
century. Monarchy is a form of
government in which a single
family rules from generation to
generation. The power, or
sovereignty, is personified in a
single individual.
Absolute monarchy
Constitutional monarchies
4. Democracy
Democracy is defined as a form of
government in which power belongs to the
people.
Direct democracy
Representative democracy
5. Oligarchy
Oligarchy is a form of government in
which all power resides with a few
people or in a dominant class or group
within the society.
6. Authoritarianism
Authoritarianism is a form of government in
which the people have no participation. The
characteristics of authoritarianism include
absolute obedience to authority by the people and
ill-defined and often changing executive power.
7. Totalitarianism
Rule by a single party
Total control of the military
Total control over means of
communication (such as newspapers,
propaganda, etc…)
Police control with the use of terror as a
control tactic
Control of the economy
